The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented the Fe2+ /Fe3+-SO2 anode reaction in a Cu electrowinning cell with full-size electrodes. Electrowinning was conducted using industrial electrolyte at 258 A/m2 (24 A/ft2) and 40 'C. Manifold injection of electrolyte provided circulation between the electrodes. Five-day operation using an optimized manifold gave an average cell voltage of 0.94 V at 89% current efficiency, which amounted to an energy savings of 2.82 MJ/kg (0.355 kW-hr/lb) compared to conventional electrowinning. Acid misting was completely eliminated, and SO2 concentration 23 cm (9 in.) above the cell averaged 0.06 ppm.

A new tunnel lining was designed for rehabilitation of the existing unlined Weehawken Tunnel in New Jersey. Structural assessment using beam spring models was performed for the lining design as a drained structure at the invert with a waterproofing umbrella. Empirical Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guideline was typically adopted for estimating hydrostatic pressure, which recommends full hydrostatic pressure at the crown and ten or twenty-five percent gradual reduction from the initial pressure toward the invert. Finite element seepage analyses were conducted for the actual conditions based on anticipated drainage behind the lining and impact on the structural design. Considerations will be provided on the existing guideline for estimating hydrostatic pressures.

In approaching a discussion of production of cement, I hope I won't be like the porter in the bank who was asked if he could give some details on the rediscount rate. He replied, "Boss, when I said hello, I told you all I know." Need for change every so often is illustrated by the story of the little boy four years old who had not spoken a word in those four years. One morning he said, "This damned oat meal is burned'." His Dad was amazed and said, "Son, how come you haven't said a word for four years and now out of a clear, blue sky you say, "The oat meal is burned." Johnny said, "Well, up to now everything has been all right." Not being a mining engineer myself, and my subject not dealing with mining engineering directly, I can only hope that you will agree that the subject has current relevancy by the feet that it can materially improve our environment by putting to good use a potential environmental polluter; namely, fly ash. The profitable utilization of fly ash can reduce cost of use of coal as an energy source. Therefore, it behooves us all to explore to the greatest depth, the pluses and minuses occasioned by its use wherever possible. My particular subject and my particular interest lie in its utilization as a blend in the production of Type IP Portland-Pozzolan Cement meeting requirements of ASTM C-595, Type IP.

A principal first order and a minor summation term contribute to the solution of the discretized batch grinding equation when formulated in cumulative retained mode. Depending on the interrelationships between the selection and breakage parameters, the minor term may be advantageously modified in a number of ways. The reduced grinding equations thus obtained are solved by iterations to give relatively simple solutions which are tested against experimental data. The implications and advantages of the reduced grinding equations are briefly discussed.

Technologic advances in materials utilization during the past two decades have brought is a long way toward the point where we can make the products we need from the materials we have readily available. Notable examples are the synthesis of diamond, zeolites, quartz crystal, mullite, and mica, and the development of phosphate bonded tale. Two of these--zeolites and mullite--involve the use of clays. There is little reason to doubt that equally important advances will be realized in the next decade, and that clays will play an important role in the developing materials technology. Indeed, the stage is already set for many of them. This discussion is concerned primarily with the high quality, relatively high priced clays, kaolin, bentonite, fuller's earth and ball clay. The first three have enjoyed demand growth rates over the past two decades which on the average exceeded the growth rate for the economy as a whole. There are indications that demand for ball clay will be growing at a faster rate in the future.

Six mining greats, two of them living, will be enshrined at the event. They will join 126 other mining legends previously honored by the hall of fame. The keynote speaker will be William Perry Pendley, president and chief legal officer of Mountain States Legal Foundation in Denver, CO. Jeffrey Zelms, president and chief executive officer of The Doe Run Co., will be master of ceremonies. Richard Swayne, regional director USA for Boart Longyear Co. of Salt Lake City, UT, will introduce the speakers. Thomas Falkie, president of Berwind Natural Resources Corp. and chairman of the Mining Hall of Fame’s board of governors, will enshrine the inductees.

Observations of calcite and opal in cavities in the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain indicate that: 1) seeps are not regularly spaced in underground workings and not all fractures sustain flow, 2) many cavities represent sites of seepage that have remained stable for millions of years, 3) typically there is no evidence (such as dripstone) for seepage dripping into cavities from their ceilings, and 4) seepage is not likely to be greater than about 1 liter of water per year (per 5-m-long drift) based on calcite abundances observed in the ESF. This estimate of seepage is significantly lower than that used for performance assessment.

One of the first activities after returning to the Moon will be finding sources of water and materials for the construction of human settlements and other infrastructure. There is evidence of the existence of deposits in the bottom of craters at the South Polar region and in flat areas around. Based on geological data from the Moon, a block model representing a deposit or icy regolith has been defined in the vicinities of Shackleton Crater, with unique characteristics of shape, thickness, and water contents. A mine plan utilizing surface mine modeling software for ore extraction from an open pit- type of excavation to a delivery point near a water processing facility is proposed, with monthly, quarterly, and yearly schedules. Production results, dashboard charts and progress of the topographic changes are also presented.

"Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

Discussion by F.W. DeVries Comments on natural cyanide attenuation. The paper by Botz and Mudder in the November 2000 issue of Minerals and Metallurgical Processing had one disappointing aspect. Table 1 (p. 229) failed to include a significant species - neutral copper cyanide (CuCN). This compound has been most trouble-some in many plant-scale cyanide cleanup processes, includ- ing acidification-volatilization- reneutralization (AVR), hy- drogen peroxide cleanup and air/SO2 cleanup. It has also plagued many pilot efforts to use ion-exchange (IX) resin technology. This author elucidated the concept that, under some conditions, copper cyanide failed to precipitate out of treated effluents and appeared to exist as a filterable colloid that reported as copper and cyanide, with the latter measured as WAD (weak-acid-dissociable) cyanide in that analytical method. The concentrations measured were very near the levels of 0.2 ppm, often the regulatory limit for WAD cyanide. The copper concentration, using the 1 : 1 ratio for this com- pound, would then be more than 0.4 ppm, which could also be unacceptable. We discovered that it was unsafe to assume that the Cu(CN),- would surrender both cyanide ions simultaneously and allow cupric copper to be removed subsequently as, say, cupric ferrocyanide (Hatchett's Brown). This compound could be ignored as safely as the "iron blues," as essentially an inert solid, stable in geologic time if not exposed to sunlight. Under poorly controlled oxidation of the cyanocuprite ions (copper with four, three or two cyanides complexed to the copper), CuCN could well be formed and could not be assumed to precipitate out as a solid. The authors of the paper, by failing to include the CuCN species in their model, may have left users of the model prone to ignore the possible occurrence of the colloidal(?) form in the discharge, thus finding an effluent that failed to meet regulatory limits. (See addendum below.) This somewhat ephemeral material may well have been responsible for some large-scale failures of cyanide destruction technology to succeed at sites in North America and elsewhere. Two specific references alluding to this occurrence may be found: Griffiths et al., 1987, "The detoxification of gold-mill tailings with hydrogen peroxide," Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, September, p. 282. DeVries, 1989, "Improved understanding in detoxification of cyanide leach liquors using peroxide" Rand01 Gold Conference, Sacramento CA, p. 15 1. It is advisable for workers in this area of cyanide removal or recycle to avoid assuming that CuCN will, with certainty, precipitate out of solution, or that the dicyanocuprite ion will part simultaneously with both cyanide ions and allow cupric copper to be dealt with by other reactions. One further piece of work may be incomplete. That is, a definitive study of the long-term behavior of CuCN that does precipitate when exposed to other compounds present in neutralized tailings. Addendum. The extremely complex reaction of cupric ion on cyanide- which, of course, results in oxidation of cyanide to cyanate, probably through the intermediate stage of forming cyanogen [(CN)2] from oxidation of HCN with its hydrolysis to cyanate and cyanide ion - involves two cyanide moieties and the reduction of the cupric ion back again to the cuprous state. This, then, can form the CuCN potential "solid" that was already the undesirable species. In cyanide cleanup, with either air/SO2 or hydrogen peroxide, copper is generally employed as the catalyst, so it is unclear what happens when the CU(CN)2-1 is ultimately exhausted. INTRODUCTION In 1973, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) initiated a 10-year program of research on tunneling technology for future highways as a part of a larger Department of Transportation effort on tunnels. The objectives of the FHWA program are to: improve tunnel design technology, reduce costs, minimize adverse environmental impact due to construction, increase the rate of construction, and assure the maintenance of a safe and attractive tunnel environment. The program is divided into four research tasks designed to solve tunneling problems identified by the engineering and field offices of the FHWA. These tasks are as follows: 1. Cut-and-Cover Tunneling 2. Site Investigations 3. Ground Movements - Prediction and Control 4. Highway Environmental Criteria for Tunnels In order to provide input into Tasks 2 and 3, the FHWA is sponsoring an investigation and testing program by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to instrument and monitor two sites in the second bore of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel located on Interstate Highway 70 at Loveland Pass approximately 97 km (60 miles) west of Denver, Colorado. The tunnel will be approximately 14.0 m (46 ft) in diameter when excavated. The Bureau of Mines has developed a process to improve the leaching kinetics of diffusion controlled systems. The system features the Bureau-developed turbomill, an attrition grinder which scrubs the reaction product coating away from the unreacted mineral grains during leaching. The system can be continuously operated at any temperature up to the boiling point of the leaching agent. This paper describes the research on the dissolution of chalcopyrite with acidified ferric sulfate which forms a sulfur product on the unreacted chalcopyrite surface. This method is a hydrometallurgical alternative to chalcopyrite smelter technology which eliminates S)2 emission problems with its associated costs. Batch testing at 90? C with the chalcopyrite/ferric sulfate system resulted in better than 99-pct extraction of copper. At an optimal energy consumption of 1,520 kW h/st, 95 pct of the copper was extracted. Recent work has been directed to development of a continuous system and SX/EW treatment of the resulting pregnant liquor from the chalcopyrite/ferric sulfate leach.

"Mining companies have started using quantitative tools, including computer models of community interaction, to gain intelligence on social risks surrounding their projects. Models of changes in community preferences regarding mining projects over time are useful for evaluating changes in project risk due to changes in the social license to operate. For example, agent-based models that use information diffusion models and social networks are useful for studying those changes due to information diffusion. However, such agent-based models are sensitive to many input parameters including the parameters of the diffusion model and the average degree of the social network. This work evaluates the sensitivity of such a model to diffusion and network model parameters (probability of imitation, probability of innovation, and average degree) using the first order and total sensitivity indices. The results show that the model is much more sensitive to the probability of imitation than the other two parameters. Thus, to reduce uncertainty surrounding the model’s predictions of community acceptance of mining, mines need to obtain accurate estimates of the probability of imitation. Nakagawa and co-workers used ABM to evaluate dynamics of a mining project’s stakeholder networks whereas Fujiono used ABM to study innovation diffusion in the mining industry. Our previous work has presented models and a framework for modeling information diffusion in a mining community and its impact on level of acceptance (a measure of SLO) of the mining project (Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b)."

Copper deposits in sandstones are excellent targets for open pit mines using SX-EW extraction and processing methods. The mineralogy consists of chalcocite as the primary sulfide and copper carbonates and sulfates in the zone of oxidation. Two general deposit types are recognized: early diagenetic copper deposits that are associated with the reddening of the surrounding sediments, and epigenetic deposits that are associated with the migration of copper-rich basinal fluids along faults into permeable reservoir beds with a source of reductant. Epigenetic copper deposits are more likely to contain enough tonnage to be economic.

Sintering of iron ore has undergone a dramatic development world-wide. Today, the annual world production amounts to approximately 600 million tons. At present, the sintering process in competition with pelletizing, seems to offer certain advantages inasmuch as it allows the use of solid fuels. Also, its charging behaviour in the blast furnace is, in general, considered as being better than that of pellets. This is true, in particular, for the charging behaviour and the gas permeability in relation to the grain size. Moreover, instead of charging limestone into the blast furnace, for instance, the basic components which are necessary for the burden materials can generally be supplied in a simpler and more cost-effective way by using basic sinter instead of basic pellets. While in sintering, with basicity rising to the range of 1.6 to 1.8 CaO : SiO2, the capacity increases and the sinter quality shows improvements in most of its characteristics, the pro¬duction of basic pellets generally requires a higher fuel rate, when compared to acid pellets, while production capacity decreases and some of the quality characteristics deteriorate.

environmental and social/political changes the world is currently experiencing. Three of major challenges facing the mining industry today are: water scarcity, unpredictable weather conditions that generate a risk of tailings dam failures as well as the correlating social pressure and government regulations that prevent the development of new or expanded tailings dam projects. It is estimated the total number of active, inactive and closed storage facilities globally is over 8,500 containing over 217 km3 of tailings (46% are from copper mining)1 which at some point will need to be addressed. Technologically, there are several solutions for tailings management, including conventional ponds, thickened tails, paste backfill and filtered dry stack tailings. The use of pressure filters, for tailings dewatering is currently being evaluated and often selected as the preferred technology where dry stacking is the chosen solution for residue disposal. This is mainly due to the pressure filters ability and flexibility to address and achieve the current challenging aspects of tailings processing including: • Extremely high capacities of >80,000 dry tons/day • Lower ore grades which require finer grinding and result in a higher amount fine fractions and clay content • Residual moisture targets required for the geotechnical specifications for dry stacking

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

An economic and operational evaluation of the unrecovered metal, physical conditions, and chemical environment in a leach pad should be made prior to decommissioning. This evaluation will help determine the possibility and method of secondary and/or enhanced metal recovery and the method(s) to be used for detoxification and heap closure. The evaluation requires quantitative sample collection in a locally variable, yet grossly homogenous material. An assessment of a valley fill heap leach pad was made using a technique borrowed from placer technology called sonic drilling. The sonic drilling technique produced very satisfactory core recovery and sample quality. At this site, drilling results demonstrated that the method of heap construction produced expected features after extensive long term leaching. Rather than a uniformly homogenous pile of metallurgically depleted crushed ore, an assemblage of solution channels, un-oxidized sections, unleached areas, and compaction due to various factors, were found. These conditions are thought to represent a normal, rather than unique, situation for a valley fill heap leach. The lack of this information can have a significant impact on the economics and methods of heap re-handling and ultimate closure.

In earlier work it has been shown that paper filler clay products can be obtained from primary kaolin deposits of Minnesota. The objective of the current work was to reduce silica and iron contaminants and to maximize kaolin recovery to higher value products suitable for paper coating. This results in achieving a finer and cleaner product conforming to paper coating specifications. Cationic flotation and high gradient magnetic separation were used to remove free silica and iron, respectively, while attrition grinding and ultrasonics have been examined for particle size reduction. The results of this work are presented and discussed particularly with respect to application-oriented product properties. Budgetary estimates are presented for a 200,000 ton/year processing plant based on the process flowsheet developed and optimized by the study.
