There are certain site-specific geological and physical features of a rock mass which control its behavior under the dynamic stresses induced by the action of explosives. It is essential that blasting technology be adapted specifically to those features. There does not exist a single, simple "right" way for each type of blasting operation, but rather each operation must be custom-designed for each site. When this is done, it is often possible to produce unusual but highly desirable end resglts, such as undisturbed narrow rock walls, monoliths and square benches. Although the techniques illustrated here were developed specifically for "sculpture blasting", the geomechanics principles would apply to other types of blasting control, both large-scale and small-scale. Because the techniques are designed more for the purpose of modifying the site responses which would ordinarily be expected than they are to developing new "blasting formulae?, the name "Modified Site Response Blasting" will be used.

Steel-fiber-reinforced-shotcrete (SFRS) methods of testing and the wording of specifications vary from country to country. In the USA ASTM C1018 is widely used. The Canadians have taken a close look at C1018 and point out that exact determination of the first crack is very subjective, and they propose a method of design that eliminates this variable. The Europeans (EFNARC) have taken the principles of testing a step further than ASTM C1018, and have added a new step in measuring the effectiveness of SFRS. EFNARC uses an "energy absorption" of a plate loaded in its center, in addition to the principles of C1018. The principles of SFRS design are also used in Japan, Norway and elsewhere.

In order to control and dispatch the sewage water coming from 3 tunnels toward 2 downstream sewage tunnels, a large cavern has been excavated in a suburb of PARIS. Located at a depth of 47,00 m, it has been excavated using the NATM procedure through swelling clay, weathered sandstone, and marl and chalk. It is 16,50 m high, 12,40 m wide and 60, 00 m long, with an elliptical cross-section and its two ends are egg-shapped. The final lining of the cavern is composed of 30 to 40 cm of shotcrete, steel ribs and passive anchor bars. The excavation stages and related movements were surveyed by extensometers, pressure cells and convergence devices. The design, method of construction of the cavern and the results of the measurements made are commented.

Efficient methods for removal of copper from heap leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The INEEL has developed a set of materials based upon current solvent extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, our strategy anchors the chelators to a non-polymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established and attachment to the solid surfaces achieved in an efficient manner. Our continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper capturing capabilities.

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Company into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on the laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 34% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh/ton) of 33%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to boost domestic production of manganese. Virtually no mining exists in the low grade and/or small deposits that occur in this Country. One large, low-grade manganese deposit located in westcentral Arizona--The Artillery Peak district--was extensively studied and sporadically mined during the 1940's and 1950's. Although manganese mining in the district has been long dormant, recent studies indicate that the deposits may be amenable to economical production by heap and/or in situ leaching methods. A conceptual design for an in situ leaching system features undercutting and blasting a block of ore, leaching with SO2, and extracting the manganese as a sulfate or oxide. Possible applications to other manganese deposits depend upon formation permeability and specific manganese mineralogy.

The degree to which automation, remote control and robotics have been used in the mining industry is far less compared to general industry. Reasons include the adverse working environment, the difficult work operations and the generally lower incentive for capital investments in new mining equipment. The author and his employer has been involved in the development of advanced mining and underground construction equipment. This equipment is designed to he remotely operated, to improve both productivity and worker safety. Many of these machines employ advanced electronics and robotic features. The types of machines that will be discussed include remote shaft lining and placement, remote excavation and mining operations, and automated conveyor systems.

The industrial practice of froth flotation for upgrading the quality of fine coal is a relatively complex, expensive, and inefficient process when compared to the coarse- and intermediate-size coal cleaning circuits. The differences in cost and process efficiency can be attributed mainly to the lower equipment throughput, the added cost of flotation reagents, and the fact that flotation is typically a manually operated process susceptible to fluctuating feed characteristics that influence the overall operating efficiency. The emphasis in recent years has been on improving the flotation process efficiency and lowering the cost per clean ton. This has been achieved by larger flotation cell designs, implementation of flotation reagent evaluation programs, and improved process instrumentation and control. These developments are reviewed along with other current coal flotation practices.

Metallurgical coal is an essential component for the blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking process, which accounts for roughly 70% of total global steel production. To meet the growing demand for metallurgical coal, Arch Resources identified the potential to recover low- ash coal from ultra-fines discarded prior to the deslime flotation circuit across their portfolio of operations. Historically, many flotation circuits were designed to discard this ultra-fine coal due to high clay content and technological barriers to cost-effectively upgrade and dewater the coal to a saleable product. Recent advancements in high-intensity flotation technology, including the Eriez StackCell, have enabled coal producers to recover ultra-fine coal while minimizing capital and operating costs. In July 2023, Arch Resources commissioned the first full-scale ultra-fines recovery circuit utilizing StackCell high-intensity flotation technology at the Leer Mining Complex. This paper reviews the approach utilized to develop the flotation process design, learnings from the commissioning and ramp-up period, and performance data through the first year of operation.

INTRODUCTION The City of Oslo together with the neighbor municipalities, Baerum and Asker, are presently building a jointly owned sewage treatment plant located on the west side of the inner Oslofjord. The project is scheduled for completion late 1981. Because the location of the treatment plant is at a distance of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center, a discharge of more than 13 yds 3/sec (10 m3/sec.) of sewage and storm water will have to be transported over considerable distances. The topography of the area and the geological conditions early indicated that the only realistic transport method had to be through tunnels. As planning proceeded, full face tunnel boring emerged more and more as a favorable alternative to conventional drill and blast medhods. Today the scheme comprises nearly 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels being excavated by full face tunnel borers. In addition a number of access tunnels and cross cuts are to be excavated by conventional methods.

This presentation will represent a diversion from the central theme of Cordilleran geology, in both time and space, as we move 2,000 miles east of Spokane to eastern Canada, specifically the province of Quebec, to discuss a major new Archean-age volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit called Louvicourt. The deposit is located in the Val d'Or camp in the prolific Abitibi Greenstone Belt some 400 miles north of Montreal. It was discovered by Aur Resources in June, 1989 on a property operated under the terms of a joint venture with Louvem Mining, a Quebec company controlled by Ste. Genevieve Resources Inc. of Montreal. As a geologist, I am proud to be able to describe Louvicourt as a geological discovery, as it was found by doing systematic deep diamond drilling based on a geological concept. The deposit is essentially blind from surface and lay undiscovered for the 10 years that the Louvem mine was in production just 2,000 feet away from its easternmost workings.

INTRODUCTION The prediction of the engineering behavior of a rock mass depends upon the systematic analyses of the results of an exploration program, and upon the recognition of the significant rock properties in the early stages of excavation. The variations in rock properties in different geologic terrains and the state of the geotechnical art preclude complete success in the former case, and we therefore must rely heavily on the experience gained in the latter phase. The geotechnical information obtained from these two phases is only of value to the design engineer when applied to the rock behavior during excavation and subsequent plant operation. Pertinent questions which must be answered include: how does the joint orientation and frequency effect tunnel support and overall cavern stability; how does the depth of surficial soil or weathering effect foundations or slope stability for portal cuts; are there permeable zones within the rock mass that could lead to leakage problems around penstocks and is the material in these zones soluble or likely to pipe in the long term; and does the proposed engineering structure fit the terrain, or will it inevitably lead to problems requiring extensive remedial treatment. The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores and, for major veins, their great vertical range (>990m). Less well-documented are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine, and volcaniclastic rocks deposited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals Here precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate, and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfide and precious metal telluride-s. Wallrock alteration is quite limited adjacent to veins and somewhat more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias.

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2

Before the first shovelful of dirt is removed from a developing mining property, a wide range of data must be collected, organized and analyzed. Among the key steps in this process are: • Visualization of the deposit from drill hole data and geologic interpretation, using all available information, including surface geology, geochemistry and geophysics. • Drawing of vertical and horizontal sections. • Construction of a 3D solid model of the deposit. • Contouring of deposit outlines and geological structure until the model represents best estimate of reality. • Estimation of grade and quality distribution. • Calculation of reserves. • Examination of possible mining methods. • Determination of economic feasibility. Many techniques are available to aid in this process of mine project feasibility analysis, from quick pencil calculations to sophisticated computer methods. However, time races faster in the complex modem business world than it did 50 years ago. Tried and true pencil methods take too much time. Opportunity may pass a mine developer by while a property is still in the first stages of analysis. In the days of hand techniques, initial analysis of the economic feasibility of a mining project usually stopped with reserve calculations and broad mine planning. Further planning was not done or was done only for the short term. Manual techniques require too much time and manpower to evaluate a longterm mining program. Mining-industry recognition of computer utility has increased. Most companies now use computers in technical applications and could not conceive of working without them. Building initial computer models of a deposit may take nearly as long as hand techniques. But the payback comes when changes are needed and a variety of mine plans are quickly tested.

And other technological growth takes place far away from the public view but can have as much of an impact on our daily life as does shopping at Amazon or connecting with friends on social media.At the “THRIVE 2018, Innovations Advancing Mining” conference presented by SME on Sept. 27 at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA, the focus was on innovation and how it affects the global mining industry.More than 100 people were on hand for the inaugural event, and they were treated to a unique program that focused on the cutting-edge innovations that will carry the mining industry into the future while increasing safety and productivity along the way.2018 SME President Barbara Arnold was the driving force behind the conference and put together the technical program with a focus on innovation through the entire mining life cycle and into the future. Talks ranged from more efficient and safer ways to extract minerals to some of the most advanced end uses of minerals and metals, including the use of 3D printing to create precision parts for machines and humans from advanced metal alloys.“We need to adapt new technologies to our industry and develop additional technologies as we provide materials and metals for infrastructure and energy development in the United States, around the globe, and to the Moon and beyond,” Arnold told Mining Engineering. “Our inaugural THRIVE conference sets the stage for these innovations to be applied and to continue to be developed. Maintaining stable high walls can be a challenging task. Complex geological and structural features, alteration zones, rock mass properties, and hydrogeological conditions must be well understood to design a safe mining environment. Economic considerations must also be taken into account as the mine operator must provide ore deliveries and protect reserves. However, even when good engineering practices are followed, and proper blasting and mining techniques are implemented, slope movements may still occur. When these slope instabilities are minor, the mine is often able to continue operations with minimal impacts on safety or production. When these occurrences are excessive and coupled with high rates of movement, a robust monitoring system is crucial to continuing mining activities while protecting personnel. This paper summarizes the approach an open pit mine in Nevada took as excessive and rapid high-wall movement was experienced in an integral area. Creative mining approaches, combined with slope monitoring radar technology, were utilized to maintain safe and successful mining activities despite active movement that exceeded an average velocity of 30 inches per day.

Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese.
