An integrated statistical-geostatistical modelling of gold exploration data of Gurahar Pahar prospect of Mahakoshal greenstone belt in Central India has been attempted. Statistical modelling of gold accumulation and width reveal a positively skewed 2-parameter lognormal distribution fit with an estimate of mean gold as 0.84 gram/tonne. Geostatistical modelling provided a spherical semi-variogram function fit with mean kriged estimate and mean kriging variance of gold as 0.76 gram/tonne and 0.23 (gram/tonne)2 -respectively. Ore inventory and grade-tonnage relationships for a selected part provided an estimate of 3,36,000 tomes of ore with an average gold of 0.76 gram/tonne at 0.5 gram/tonne cutoff grade.

Wastes related to abandoned mine sites can constitute important potential pollution sources, depending on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics and volume. Mine waste disposal sites contain a diverse variety of wastes including overburden material and waste rocks, the ore which cannot be economically removed and wastes from the smelting processes when they are accomplished at the mine site. These materials are usually heterogeneous in size, mineralogy and metal concentrations. Asturias, in northern Spain, has an extensive mining history and, in consequence, there are abundant unreclaimed and derelict mine sites with abandoned mines and spoil heaps of different age, morphology, content and dimensions. In these spoil heaps, waste materials are subjected to the intense action of a humid environment, so the instability of sulphides and sulpharsenides results in the production of acid and metal-rich leachates, which are incorporated to surface water or infiltrated through the land reaching groundwater bodies. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the stored materials are key data to evaluate if they represent an environmental risk. Mineralogy and geochemistry of wastes and the particular specific environmental conditions of each site affect the rate of weathering and therefore the metal release. The characterisation of mine wastes is a necessary step in order to establish suitable assessment strategies with the aim of reducing the leaching, transport and widespread of ecotoxic elements from mining wastes to the environment (surface water, sediments, soils and air). As a consequence of the weathering of As-rich mineral phases, high arsenic contents are commonly detected in effluents from mine voids and spoil heap leachates.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. Advances are made in the field of mineral processing on a continuing basis both in the industry and the academia. These advances do not always get used fully because of the inherent difficulties in the transfer of knowledge and reduction to practice. In recent years, knowledge engineering is being increasingly employed in other fields to overcome some of these difficulties. This paper presents a vision of how knowledge engineering can be applied to the benefit of the mineral processing industry and includes a discussion of associated principles, techniques, and advantages.

The underground voids that result from mining provide opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD). Such disposal could solve many environmental problems. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. The US government is now planning on using specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. Using the experience gained from the domestic projects that are now in preparation and from foreign repositories that are now in operation, US mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

Limestone neutralization of acid mine drainage has been proposed and examined as a method of treatment. However, limestones differ greatly in composition and structure. The reactivity of 14 selected limestones was studied, both by chemical and physical properties and by relative effectiveness in neutralizing synthetic and actual mine waters, and several guidelines for the choice of limestones are given. The particle size should be at least as small as 74 microns and preferably smaller. The most effective limestones are most nearly pure calcium carbonate. Stones which have a relatively low calcium con- tent but which contain calcite and have a large surface area are also effective neutralizers. Magnesite and dolomitic limestones are much less reactive. Disadvantages in using even the most reactive lime- stones for neutralization are indicated.

Due to its complex rheological behaviour, shotcrete induces a ground-structure interaction that differs significantly from other types of tunnel linings. For the same reason, the instrumentation of shotcrete linings presents special problems, particularly when it comes to estimating the stresses transferred to the lining during construction. The shotcrete characteristics which affect the stress distribution are initially discussed. Measurements obtained in a recent soft ground tunnel are also presented. The conclusions are aimed at introducing practical recommendations for the design of tunnels where shotcrete is used as initial and/or final support.

Section 56.5001 Title 30, [Code of Federal Regulations1], establishes requirements for respirable dust exposure in Metal and Nonmetal Mines based on the Threshold Limit Values (TLV's) adopted by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Respirable dust samples collected by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors at a sandstone quarry showed certain workers were exposed to excessive concentrations during development of a "coyote tunnel" that was ventilated with a blowing system. Because exhausting face ventilation systems are known to control dust more effectively than blowing face systems, a change was proposed to improve worker respirable dust exposures. This paper describes the evaluation of the proposed exhausting ventilation system in the quarry's "coyote tunnel" and compares the respirable dust exposures with those measured by the MSHA inspectors with the blowing system. Results showed the proposed exhausting ventilation system reduced respirable dust exposures to less than 20 percent of those measured by MSHA inspectors when the blowing system was used.

A recent advance in slope dewatering-depressurization and stabilization is the use of vacuum assist horizontal drainage. (Brawner and Pakalnis) Horizontal drains have been used for several decades to reduce water pressures in slopes to improve stability. The benefit from vacuum assist arises from an increased hydraulic gradient caused by an induced negative atmospheric pressure. A research program included a laboratory model whereby the effects of vacuum drainage were evaluated. Three case studies are described where the technique has been successful. The first is in a rock slope where flows increased from 0.1 1/min. under gravity drainage up to 1.2 1/min, upon vacuum. The second study involves installation of 17 drains placed at a slightly downward gradient to intercept and de- pressurize aquifers under a major tar sand deposit in Canada. The third study was on a large open pit copper mine in British Columbia where flow increased about 30 per cent.

The year 1867 marks the first year of commercial production of phosphate rock in the United States. South Carolina produced almost all of the domestic output of mineral phosphate until phosphate mining began in Florida in 1888. During the period 1868 to 1949 the total marketed production of domestic phosphate rock was about 186 million long tons of which 71.5 percent was produced in Florida, 18 percent in Tennessee and 7 percent in South Carolina (1). From 1949 through 1960, Florida phosphate rock production has ranged Prom 71 to 77 percent of the total domestic production. Since three-fourths of the domestic phosphate production is from the Florida field, and since most of the phosphate from the Tennessee and Western fields is not processed, but used directly as electric furnace burden, this paper will concern itself almost entirely with water requirements for mining and processing ore from Florida. Figure 1 summarizes phosphate rock production for Florida vs. total United States production over the period 1947-1960.

The Lupin mine consists of a gold mining, milling, and refining complex located 400 km (250 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle on the southwest shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories. (Fig.1). The mine was commissioned in 1982 and is presently producing 6 t/a (193,000 oz per year) of gold from 612 kt (675,000 st) of ore. The success of this operation is due to such factors as the continuity and grade of the ore body, the competency of the host rock, low mining costs, efficient milling, the transportation of people and materials to and from the mine site, and the unique work schedule resulting in a stable workforce. Echo Bay Mines operated a silver mine at Port Radium on Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories, from 1965 to 1982. The company first obtained an option on the Lupin property from Inco in February 1979 and completed an underground exploration program in 1979-1980. Topographic relief is low and vegetation is sparse in the continental subarctic climatic zone, consisting mainly of moss and lichens. Temperature extremes are from 24°C to - 45°C (+75°F to -49°F) with an annual mean of -12°C (+54°F). Permafrost extends from near surface to 500 m (1640 ft) in the ore zone. Its remote location and harsh climate presented some challenging design and logistical problems. Construction began at the Lupin mine site in 1980. Before construction, a 1.5-km (5000-ft) gravel landing strip was prepared, suitable for landing a C 130 Hercules. The entire Lupin project took 20 months to build. All of the men and materials were transported to the site with some 1100 Hercules flights and several hundred Convair 640 flights. The Convairs transported construction crews, which numbered 400 at their peak, and also carried 3.2 kt (3535 st) of supplies during construction. The facilities were constructed and commissioned for a total cost of C$135 million. The operation was originally designed to throughput 860 t/d (950 stpd). Expansion in 1983, circuit refinements, and some capital projects brought the daily throughput to 1.7 kt/d (1850 stpd). The underground mine delivers 612 kt/a (675,000 stpy) of ore to the mill at an average head grade of 8.46 g/t (0.3 oz per st). The ore is nonrefractory and is processed in a conventional cyanide leach using the Merrill Crowe process. Gold recovery is about 95.0%. The average production cost is $US5.85/g ($US 182 per oz) based on 1987 figures. Mining at Lupin – Geology The Lupin deposit occurs in amphibolite grade iron formation overlain by mudstones (phyllites) and underlain by graywacke (quartzites). Contacts between the wallrock units and the iron formation are well defined. It has been folded and tilted into a megascopic antiform-synform-antiform structure (Fig. 2). Gold occurs primarily within the sulfide rich iron formation, with some minor occurrences in sulfide poor iron formation. The distinction between sulfide rich and sulfide poor iron formation is based on a visual cutoff of 5% total sulfide content. Mining widths are determined by an assay cutoff of 4.2 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold. There are few tons between 1.7 and 4.2 g/t (0.06 and 0.15 oz per st). The amphibolitic iron formation at the mine ranges from 1.5 to 20 m (5 to 65 ft) wide and has been followed over a strike length exceeding 1.7 km (5600 ft). The wider portions of the ore body tend to occur at its north extent and south nose. The gold-bearing iron formation appears on plan as a Z-shaped structure made up of three zones: the West, Center, and East. The West and Center zones dip steeply to the East (75° to 90°). Each of the ore zones plunge at an angle of about 65°. Total strike length of the three zones is more than 610 m (2000 ft). The zones are confirmed at a depth of 650 m (2130 ft) below surface. The Center zone is the widest and varies from 4.5 to 20 m (15 to 65 ft) while the West is the narrowest, averaging 1.5 m ( 5 ft). The footwall is comprised of quartzites that are strongly jointed and locally grades into phyllite, which comprises the hanging wall. The hanging wall and footwall are reversed in the West zone. Mineralogy of the ore at Lupin consists of amphibole minerals (hornblende, cummingtonite, and grunerite), feldspars, quartz, occasionally garnet, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, minor pyrite, and trace chalcopyrite. The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining the oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1)mineralization; 2)oxidation; 3)structural setting; 4)lithology; 5)alteration; and ultimately, 6)the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

The ‘Westerschelde Tunnel’ underpasses the estuary of the Schelde in the Netherlands. The tunnel will consist of two tubes which are driven by two hydroshields (slurry shields). The tunnels will each have a length of approx. 6.6km and a bore-diameter of 11.33 m. Demanding ground conditions had to be considered during the design of the shield machines. Loose sands, extensive clay formations and high ground water pressures of up to 6.5 bar will be encountered during the tunnel drive. The tunnelling activities will start in the middle of 1999 and are scheduled to end by the end of 2001.

The $2 billion (A$) Melbourne City Link Project is one of the largest and most important metropolitan road developments ever undertaken in Australia. The project involves two three-lane vehicular tunnels totaling 5 km, constructed as deep as 65 m underground. The 3.4 km Burnley tunnel is one of the world's longest three-lane tunnels. The project is being delivered under a DBOOT [design-build-own-operate-transfer] process and all design and construction is performed to ISO 9000 standards. Tunnel excavation began in May 1996, and the tunnel will open to traffic in 1999. This paper focuses on the range of construction techniques utilized during construction.

The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

The early beginnings of mining geophysics in Sweden can be traced back to the reign of queen Kristina in the 17th century. The mine compass, consisting of a freely suspended magnetic needle in a casing, was in use certainly by 1640 and probably earlier for locating iron ore deposits. Whether the mine compass was a Swedish invention or not is an unsettled question since the possibility cannot be overlooked that the celebrated Nürnberg compass-makers of the 16th century may have constructed it for the first time(1). Be that as it may, the mine compass was very extensively employed in Sweden for more than two centuries and met with spectacular success in locating magnetic deposits under shallow overburden. Occasionally the diligent prospector would even be rewarded with a pyrrhotitebearing sulphide deposit, as witness many old sulphide-ore pits and some mines still in operation from the 17th and the 18th centuries. The mine compass measured only the orientation of the Earth's magnetic field and not its strength. Although it was improved in construction and sensitivity over the ages, no great strides were made in magnetic prospecting after the initial discovery of the use of the compass until Gauss, omnipresent in 19th century physics and mathematics, showed with the assistance of Weber how the strength of a magnetic field could be determined.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corporation is located approximately 900 kilometers southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity. Since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36,000 to 46,000 metric tons per day. The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02 to 0.04% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite.

Since Campbell Mine began processing ore, there has been a gravity gold recovery circuit. From 1947 to 1982, gravity gold was concentrated through the combination of jigs and mercury amalgamation. In 1982, jigs with concentrating table upgrading commenced and was utilized until the end of 1994. As of January of 1995 to the present, Knelson Concentrators in com­bination with concentrating tables have been employed to achieve a refinable product. An evaluation of the justification used for the last change is the focus of this paper.

During 1977 and 1978, a comprehensive study was made of the drill-hole data obtained by Urangesellschaft, USA, from their Juniper Ridge, WY, uranium deposits. This included uranium grade data acquisition, application of a variety of mineral deposit modeling techniques, and estimates of minable reserves, which pointed towards a possible production decision.
