"The 4c segment is a part of the ""Oman National Railway Project” linking the mining area in the surroundings of Thumrait and the port of Salalah. It is 90 km long and the last 40 km stretch crosses a mountainous area near the city of Salalah. The project includes the excavation of a 33 km double and single bore tunnel and 10 km of safety tunnels. This mountainous area is a holiday destination for Omanis, thanks to its beautiful landscapes, especially in summer time due to the monsoon rains. The tunnelling design had to take into account both these environmental constraints and the limestone rock formations crossed, which are affected by significant karst features. Given the context, the conventional tunnelling method has been preferred. INTRODUCTION The Oman Railway Project (Fig. 1) covers the construction of approximately 2,150 km of railway line for freight and passenger transport which will connect together Oman’s main towns and industrial sites and it will form part of the Arabian Peninsula railway system “GCC Project”. The non-electrified double-track railway line must guarantee a speed of 220 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains and must guarantee the transit of AAR (Association of American Railroad) H and D plates using clearance envelope according to AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association) requirements. The design alignment must have maximum radiuses of curvature of 3,250m and a maximum gradient of 1.0%. The project is divided into 9 constructional and functional segments. •,Segment 4c will be constructed in the southern region of Oman, close to the border with Yemen, to connect the town of Thumrait with the Port of Salalah. •,Segment 4c will run through the Dhofar region and will be mainly used by the freight traffic which currently travels by road."

The ability to make a good profit in the mining industry is becoming more and more difficult. Typically, grades are lower, sites are more remote, and environmental restrictions are getting tighter than ever before. While the price of the materials P.roduced, such as gold and silver, have stayed flat or declined, the external costs (goods and services) have increased. Increasingly difficult environmental restrictions have increased the lime and costs of develoJ?in9 new deposits, while often placing restrictions on a mme s production rate. Environmental costs for mine closure and site reclamation also make it very difficult to show a long-term profit while mining. Typically, the answer to this cost/price squeeze has been technological innovation. The whole concept of heap leaching low-grade gold ore is one innovation that provided some very goocf profits to the mining companies; but, today, those profits are being eroded by the continuing cost/ price squeeze. This paper will discuss material handling in a heap leach stacking operation and the alternatives of trucks, grasshopper conveY.or systems and mobile conveyor systems.

"Controlling float coal dust in underground coal mines before dispersal into the general airstream can reduce the risk of mine explosions while potentially achieving a more efficient and effective use of rock dust. A prototype, flooded-bed scrubber was evaluated for float coal dust control in the return of a continuous miner section. The scrubber was installed in line between the ventilation tubing and an exhausting auxiliary fan. Airborne and deposited dust mass measurements were collected over a period of three days at set distances from the fan exhaust to assess the changes in float coal dust levels in the return due to the operation of the scrubber. Mass-based measurements were collected on a per-cut basis and were normalized per foot of advance by the continuous miner. Results show that average float coal dust levels measured under baseline conditions were reduced by over 91% when operating the scrubber. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground mining in the United States produced over 342 million tons of coal [EIA 2013]. During the cutting, crushing, and transport of this coal, dust is generated and can be entrained in the air ventilating the mine. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.400-1 (30 CFR§ 75.400-1) defines float coal dust as particles of coal that can pass a No. 200 sieve. These coal particles can be carried by the ventilating air into return entries before settling onto mine surfaces [NIOSH 2006]. If this float coal dust becomes re-entrained into the airstream, it can propagate an explosion throughout mine workings [Harris et al. 2010]. Application of rock dust in underground coal mines is required by Federal regulation as a means of preventing the propagation of explosions by float coal dust. In order to meet Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.403 (30 CFR § 75.403), 80% incombustible content must be maintained in the composition of dust deposited in mine entries [76 Fed. Reg. 35968 (2011)]. This fraction of incombustible content is increased if elevated levels of methane are present. In order to maintain the required incombustible content, frequent or constant application of rock dust is undertaken by mine operators. Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 75.2 (30 CFR § 75.2) defines the properties of the rock dust that must be used by mine operators."

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper form their elemental states and Ag/Cu alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of ammonia, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mixed potential theory. The effect of local current resistance on the overall current has also been examined as a part of the governing theory of the dissolution. It was observed that the dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were very much affected by the composition of the alloys.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

The Gulf Coast, from New Orleans, Louisiana to Brownsville, Texas, is one of the largest high energy consuming areas in the United States. This region has areas of very high industrial density. The lower Mississippi River from Baton Rouge past New Orleans has a high industrial density. Lake Charles, Louisiana, the Orange-Beaumont-Port Arthur area, Houston (4 separate areas) and Corpus Christi all have the same high industrial density. This situation developed due to good transportation, good labor conditions, good weather and the abundance of cheap energy-gas and electricity. Obviously the latter had the greatest impact. The availability of cheap natural gas made Gulf Coast sites very attractive to energy intensive industry such as metals and petro-chemicals. The area was also very attractive to refinery development due to the large supply (endless?) of crude oil available. As we all know, the energy situation has changed dramatically in the last five years. The cost of a MMBTU has risen from the 17¢ to 19¢ level to a price of $1.95 to $2.10. The price of interstate gas, as defined by the National Energy Plan recently passed by Congress, was approximately $1.98/MMBTU escalated to October, 1978. It goes without saying, that this has had a major impact on doing business in the Gulf Coast. As fuel prices soared, different companies responded in different ways; but overall, industrial energy consumption along the coast was reduced 20% to 25% from 1974 to 1975. Since 1975 production and energy use has been increasing, however, production at some plants is still significantly below plant capacity.

INTRODUCTION This paper discusses two uranium tailings waste disposal studies that reflect the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulatory actions and their changing requirements during the mid to late 1970's. Present guidelines require that all new uranium tailings impoundments be designed and constructed to eliminate, to the extent that it is reasonably achievable, exposures and risks to the public from the tailings. This includes positive measures for control of seepage losses from the impoundment and for control of radiological releases caused by wind and water erosion. Long-term stability of the reclaimed impoundment is also a very important requirement. That is, it is intended that the tailings impoundment, once it is reclaimed, will require little or no care or maintenance as long as the uranium tailings remain a hazard. Principally because of the long-term stability objective, the NRC has now identified subsurface burial of the tailings as the "prime option" for tailings disposal. The environmental implications of these proposed regulatory actions are obviously desirable. The economic implications the actions may have on a particular project are not always so obvious because they are so dependent on environmental suitability of site conditions. Selection of a site with favorable topographic, geologic and hydrologic conditions will usually result in the most economically and environmentally attractive alternative for tailings disposal. The first project discussed in this paper was initiated before the NRC guidelines had been developed to favour subsurface burial. At the beginning, seepage and radon emission control requirements were moderate. Constraints were imposed on the design by site topography, geology, and project capitalization considerations, factors which were dealt with according to straightforward engineering and design principles. More serious constraints were imposed by changing regulatory requirements. Unlike the more usual engineeringrelated constraints, regulatory requirements were upgraded during the design process, causing the design itself to undergo numerous modifications. INTRODUCTION Lung cancer in uranium miners has been attributed to alpha irradiation of basal cells of the bronchial epithelium by radon daughters, primarily by 7.7 MeV alphas from polonium-214 (Altshuler et al., 1964). It also has been was observed that for a given cumulative radon progeny exposure, uranium miners who smoke cigarettes have an incidence of lung cancer about 10 times higher than nonsmoking miners (Lundin et al., 1969). It has been pointed out that the large excess of lung cancer deaths among smoking uranium miners is a multiplicative effect (Doll, 1971), which suggested possible synergistic interactions between airborne radon progeny and cigarette smoking. Experimental studies of the complex pattern of interactions between radon progeny, cigarette smoke particles, and the cigarette smoking process are in progress in our laboratory. Preliminary results, reported elsewhere (Martell, 1981), implicate alpha radiation from indoor radon progeny in the etiology of lung cancer in all cigarette smokers. Cigarette smoking produces high concentrations of smoke particles of low mobility and respirable size--particles between 0.5 and 4.0 µm in aerodynamic diameter (see below). The attached fraction of indoor radon progeny is highly dependent on the air concentration of small particles from cigarette smoking and from other combustion sources (Martell, 1981). The size distribution and other properties of radon progeny associated with cigarette smoke particles enhances their effectiveness in the induction of bronchial cancer in man. In this paper we discuss the properties of radon progeny associated with cigarette smoke, the fractionation of radon progeny and modification of their aerosol properties in burning cigarettes, the role of 218Po in these processes, the production of insoluble 214Pb and 212 Pb enriched particles in burning cigarettes, and the consequent differences in the patterns of polonium isotope alpha irradiation in the bronchial epithelium of smokers. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Experimental methods used in these studies involve the use of small experimental chambers of known radon and radon progeny concentrations in combination with aerosol collection and sizing techniques and sensitive radioactivity detection methods. The use of low-level [ß-] counting for radon progeny determination, providing a measure of 214 Pb plus 214Bi activity, makes it possible to carry out chamber experiments with small radon emanation sources and relatively low air concentrations of radon and radon progeny concentrations in the range from 100 to 1,000 pCi per liter. Thus, for example, in a typical experiment we use a 10 nanocurie 226Ra solution standard in a 10 liter chamber, providing an equilibrium concentration of 1,000 pCi of radon per liter. In small sealed chambers, radon progeny plate out rapidly on the chamber walls, with steady-state concentrations of airborne progeny less than 2 percent of equilibrium levels. This is experimentally convenient because, upon introduction of high concentrations of cigarette smoke particles or small particles from other sources, there is a systematic ingrowth of attached radon progeny, providing a tagged aerosol source of known age and radon progeny composition. In some chamber experiments a 226Ra solution standard of small volume, acidified to O.1N HNO3, was used as the radon emanation source. When used with a bubbler the holdup of radon in an 8 ml volume of 226Ra solution standard at 0.1N HN03 was only 2% of the total radon in the chamber at equilibrium. For experiments with 212Pb-tagged aerosols, we used a dry Ba(228Th) stearate emanation source prepared by the method of Hursh and Lovaas (1967). 226Ra and 222Rn determinations were made by radon gas counting. The 222Rn in a sealed air or water sample is transferred, using helium gas as a carrier, successively through a dry ice cooled trap at -80°C to remove water, through ascarite to remove C02, and through a small activated charcoal trap at -80°C to collect the 222Rn. Subsequently, by heating the charcoal to 400°C, the 222Rn is transferred next to an LN2-cooled capillary trap, and finally into an alphascintillation counting cell of the type described by Lucas (1957). As already stated, radon progeny activities were determined by low-level [ß-] counting, which provides a measure of 214Pb plus 214Bi. The radon progeny samples, collected on efficient Delbag polystyrene micro-fiber filters or on impactor foils, are placed in close, sandwich geometry between two thin-walled flow counters inside shielding anticoincidence counters and a 15 cm thickness of steel shielding. This configuration provides nearly 4II geometry and a low background of only 0.25 to 0.30 cpm. Aluminum absorber was added to provide a combined thickness of absorber and counter wall exceeding 7.0 mg/cm2 to eliminate the variable contribution of 7.7 MeV alphas from 214Po. 212 Pb determinations also were carried out by low-level [ß-] counting, in this case using a combined absorber and counter wall thickness of 9.0 mg/cm2 to eliminate contribution of 8.8 MeV alphas of 21 Po. In each experiment the [ß- ]activity data were corrected for decay to an appropriate common reference time for assessment of activity distributions.

The ultimate objectives and interest in removal of sulfur from high sulfur coal include: (a) reduction of the atmospheric load that con- tributes to the problem of acid precipitation; (b) reduction of ash which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers and the problem of ash disposal; and (c) alleviating the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. The cost of sulfur removal in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal-refining industry. The value of refined lower sulfur coal will be influenced by the national commitment to the environment as well as economic considerations.

Rest potential, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements were made to study the effects of cathodic polarization of chalcopyrite simulating the mineral contacted with grinding media under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction products on the chalcopyrite surface were identified by XPS and the mechanism of the cathodic reaction was proposed. Micro-flotation tests were performed to investigate the effects of surface changes on the floatability of chalcopyrite.

"A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. Magnesium carbide (Mg2C3) was observed in the product, and its mechanism of formation is proposed using phase equilibrium data and a predominance diagram.IntroductionMagnesium has an excellent combination of low density and high strength. These properties have increased worldwide demand for and use of magnesium. Two major processes are used in the commercial synthesis of magnesium metal. The first method is electrolytic reduction and the second is thermal reduction using Pidgeon process. These processes can be classified as traditional techniques, but there are numerous emerging technologies that aim at reducing the production cost of Mg, its environmental impact and energy consumption. Thermal plasma processing is one emerging technique that has great potential in all the abovementioned key areas of magnesium production.Traditional reduction techniques. Two major reduction techniques, namely electrolytic and thermal reduction, have been used in the commercial production of magnesium. Electrolytic reduction is typically carried out in electrolytic cells from magnesium chloride (obtained from seawater or well and lake brines) (Tripp, 2009). The leaching behavior of rhenium in ammonium iodide solutions with iodine as oxidant was studied. Experiments were carried out in an autoclave to investigate the effects of stirring speed, temperature, solution pH, and iodine and iodide concentrations on the dissolution of rhenium. It was found that a high temperature and a high solution pH were essential for the efficient leaching of rhenium. The dissolution rate was found to be dependent upon the concentration of iodine and iodide. It was concluded that the dissolution of rhenium under the conditions studied was controlled by the mass transfer of iodine with an apparent activation energy of 15.8 kJ/mole.

Each new period of public concern, whether rooted in things political, social, economical, or technological, brings with it new words or phrases which highlight that new interest. With people's awareness of our rapid depletion of readily available energy sources and the enormous increase in energy .costs came the new, and now often heard, terms "energy intensive", "energy sensitive", and "energy conservation". Since its birth in 1926, Fuller Company had been directly associated and involved with energy intensive products and processes. We are located in the heart of the Cement Industry. Many of our products and processes are geared to the needs of the portland cement manufacturer, and a look at the inferno within an operating cement or lime kiln will certainly convince anyone that here is an energy intensive process. Fuller Company, then, has always been energy sensitive. Process kilns, hard rock crushers, tube and roller mills, fluid bed thermal reactors, pneumatic compressors and conveyors, material coolers - all are Fuller Company products utilizing or transferring large amounts of energy. Consequently, much of our success in the marketplace depends on how wisely we design and plan for efficient use of power and for conservation of each unit of heat available.

Ventilation and refrigeration fortune climate modification contributes significantly to the operating costs of a deep hot mine. Mine climate simulation programs can he used to minimize the impact of these costs. There are several computer codes available to assist in this work. Whichever simulation program is used, it is the mine ventilation engineer who must supply the input data. This paper raises and answers the following question, namely, what accuracy is required of the basic input parameters, in order for a certain precision to he obtained in the predicted air temperatures? In the first part of the paper a new approach is described to estimate the dry and wet bulb temperature of the airflow, either in a dry or wet roadway. The calculation procedure allows an arbitrary temperature change with time, using Duhamel's superposition solution. Matrix-vector representation is applied to simplify the computational structure. In the second part of the paper the sensitivities of the dry and wet bulb air temperatures are analyzed, to the changes of the rock thernrophysical properties, the heat transfer coefficient, and the wetness factor.

The restoration of surface mining landscapes requires the (re)creation of ecosystems. In Lusatia (eastern Germany), large-scale open-cast lignite mining operations generated spoil dumps widely consisting of acidified, phytotoxic substrates. Amelioration and rehabilitation measures have been developed and applied to these substrates since the 1950s. However, it is still not clear whether these approaches are sustainable. This paper reports on collaborative research work into the ecological potential of forest ecosystem development on typical minesites in the Lusatian lignite district. At first sight, pine stands on minesites along a chronosequence comprising about 35 years did not show differences when compared with stands on non-mined sites of the general region. Furthermore, with some modification, conceptual models for flora and fauna succession in forest stands on non-mined sites seem to be applicable, at least for the early stages of forest ecosystem development. For example, soil organism abundance and activity at minesites had already reached levels typical of non-mined sites after about 20-30 years. In contrast, mine soils are very different from non-mined soils of the test region. Chemically, mine soil development is dominated by processes originating from pyrite oxidation. Geogenic, i.e. lignitic, soil organic carbon was shown to substitute for some functions of pedogenic soil organic matter. Rooting was hampered but not completely impeded in strongly acidified soil compartments. Roots and mycorrhizae are apparently able to make use of the characteristic heterogeneity of young mine soils. Considering these recent results and the knowledge accumulated during more than 30 years of research on minesite rehabilitation internationally, it can be stated that minesite restoration might be used as an ideal case study for forest ecosystem development starting at "point zero" on "terra nova".

A drill system configuration capable of working in the arctic offshore environment was developed to evaluate the placer gold resources contained in the glacio-fluvial sediments offshore Nome, Alaska. This system is capable of working on the shore fast ice during the winter months and is deployed on a drill ship during the summer. Transfer of the drill between its summer and winter configurations is accomplished with a minimum of modification to the design. The system is designed around the Becker drill. This percussive, reverse circulation drill is capable of penetrating the indurated glacial sediments present in the offshore Nome environment. This drill has operated effectively to depths in excess of 50 m (164 ft) below sea level. Since early 1987, in excess of 2000 holes have been drilled using the system. The drill system often operates in extreme weather conditions. It has averaged approximately 10 holes a day of drill production. The ore reserves defined during these drilling programs have resulted in the recovery of more than 70,000 oz (2.18 t) of gold to date, by the mining vessel Bima.

Results of geophysical and geochemical prospecting are presented. Because the deposits do not give positive identification to these indirect techniques, it is necessary to site exploratory drilling through the development of geological concepts.

Strict process control in the manufacture of the gear blank is also stressed. Finally, the writer offers a guide to proper installation, lubrication and maintenance.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (FCMHSA) begins with this statement: "Congress declares that the first priority and concern of all in the coal mining industry must be the health and safety of its most precious resource -- the miner; . . ." At the Federal level this responsibility is shared by the Department of the Interior and the Department of HEW. The health research and standard setting activities under the Act are largely the responsibility of the Department of HEW, and with the exception of Title 4, Black Lung Benefits, have been delegated to our Institute, which I will refer to henceforth as NIOSH. In addition, we bear certain joint responsibilities with the Department of the Interior. These include dust sampling and respirator approval. To complete the picture, the Department of Labor has recently assumed Black Lung Benefit respon¬sibilities from the Social Security Administration under Title 4 of the Act.

A computer code for ecological risk assessment (ERA), AQUARISK, has been developed and applied to evaluate the likelihood of biotic detriment due to exposure to acid rock drainage (ARD) from the Burkunga mine site in Australia Stream water quality monitoring data were used for the assessment and were compared with a) national water quality guidelines, b) literature derived ecotoxicology data and c) biological monitoring data. With bioavailability calculations, the code predicted that, for metals exceeding the guidelines, 44% of macroinvertebrate species above the mine and 100% below the mine would be adversely affected by the metals in the stream. This compares reasonably and conservatively with biological monitoring that showed observed reductions of 41% and 85% of species respectively at each site. Using literature data for macroinvertebrates to predict impact produced similar estimates to using data for all taxa. Use of speciation modeling also lessened the degree of reduction in the median water metal concentrations required to achieve acceptable impact (measured either by exceedence of criteria or by species likely to be affected) by a factor of 75%. This result implies significant economic and management benefits in relation to remedial engineering or water treatment options for sites.
