Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.

This paper presents the ventilation design for an underground testing facility in a salt medium. The underground workings consist of two-12 ft. (3.66 m) diameter watertight shafts and approximately 6000 ft. (1830 m) plus of drifting. These facilities are designed for the purpose of providing access for an in-situ testing of a salt horizon in which a variety of hazardous and non-hazardous materials could be temporarily stored or permanently deposited. The ventilation system includes a design basis for gassy mine conditions and provides for the option of bulk air cooling and heating.

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. A number of innovative techniques exist for solving heap leaching problems in special situations. Some of these techniques have been successfully applied and others await an opportunity for application. Discussions in this paper will deal with gold heap leaching under severe thermal conditions, in tropical rainfall circumstances, in the absence of fresh water, and in other situations removed from the ordinary. CLIMATIC CONSIDERATIONS The success or failure of precious metal dissolution operations may be strongly dependent upon proper attention to the influence of climate. A few examples are given in the following paragraphs.

The efficient and acceptable disposal of fine coal refuse (28MxO) is one of the highest priority problems facing the coal industry today. For many years the established system for the disposal of this fine refuse slurry has been to concentrate the solids in a static thickener and pump the resulting 20-40% solids underflow to lagoons or impoundments. Although this technique has served the coal industry well, increasing environmental concerns and refuse related disasters, such as Buffalo Creek, West Virginia and Aberfan, Wales, Great Britain have resulted in federal and state regulations which now control fine refuse disposal methods. As a consequence of these regulations, the capital costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating regulatory complying impoundments has become in many cases economically unattractive. Areas processing topologies similar to those coal preparation plants of the Appalachians are particularly burdened by these regulations and are consequently turning to alternatives for handling and disposal of their fine coal refuse. The basic requirements of impoundment alternatives as defined by environmental and plant demands are: (1) A relatively solids-free liquid (1000 ppm or less) to serve as plant make-up water in a "closed circuit" system, and (2) a sufficiently dewatered solids product which can be combined with the coarse refuse to form a compactable stable land-fill.

"INTRODUCTION For a long time now automation has been state of the art in production engineering and chemical engineering. The advantages of automation are, for instance, higher reliabilities of production processes, higher product qualities as well as capacities and improved safety conditions for the personnel. In contrast, many operations in mining are still conducted manually by machine operators instead of autonomous control units. One example for this is the excavation of underground hard coal which is still executed with aid of human perception. The Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) has been working on possibilities for sensor-based automation of mining machinery for many years now. Thereto the focus is set on the implementation of common material analysis techniques into ruggedized conditions as a basis for automation. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for instance is an atom emission technique which enables the determination of the elemental composition of a sample. After introducing LIBS this paper will give an overview on dust formation during the cutting process. With the illustration of a few examples the challenges in determining dust concentrations specifically such of cutting processes are explained in further detail. The final chapter will outlay the possibilities and challenges in utilizing cutting-induced dust for the automation of shearer loaders. LASER-INDUCED BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY LIBS Fundamentals LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) is a contact-free method for analyzing materials in any state of aggregate. It pertains the atom emission techniques and is based on the generation of plasma, inducing avalanche ionization on the surface of a solid material or any spot in a gas or aqueous solution. With sufficient background information on the expected elements and an additional calibration, this method can determine all present elements not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. However, this method cannot be utilized for determining the molecular composition of materials – if this feature is required a complementary method such as Raman analysis needs to be added. (1, 2)"

Pyritic sulfur in coal occurs as discrete mineral particles, and its liberation and physical rejection is the primary target for coal desulfurization. An acceptable solution to the pyrite removal problem from fine coal is not found in the standard methods of coal cleaning such as jigging, heavy-medium separation, tabling, and hydro-cycloning. Although fine coal is an ideal size for froth flotation, this method, as currently practiced is also unsuitable as the fine pyrite usually floats with the coal. One possible solution to this problem may be the froth flotation of pyrite from coal. This reverse flotation scheme would have the major advantage of removing both free pyrite and locked pyrite-coal combinations. With this possibility in mind, we have, as a first step, compared the flotation and adsorption. characteristics of an ore-pyrite and coal-pyrite with potassium-ethyl-xanthate as a collector 1 Related Research. The action of ethyl-xanthate on coal has been studied 2 by Horsley. He measured the contact angles of coal in distilled water and in the presence of purified ethyl-xanthate. The results indicated that the xanthate was not adsorbed by the coal. Additional contact angle data were obtained to determine the effects of cupric, ferric, and ferrous salts on the system. Then either the ferric or cupric salts were in, solution with the xanthate, there was an increase in the natural contact angles of the coal. This indicated that these heavy metal ions activated the flotation of the coal with xanthate. However, ferrous iron did not act as an activator. Horsley stated that the most attractive explanation was that the xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen in the presence of the ferric and cupric ions.

Prospecting in its modern context means simply the gathering of information on which, to base plans for the utilization of our mineral resources. One prospecting system familiar to T. V. viewers is the pan of the old gold prospector which, while he prospected, could produce the wealth which financed him in his search. Present day geophysical "prospecting" systems, which are based on the real or supposed responses of an ore specimen, to various stimuli finder controlled laboratory conditions, are promoted as means of reducing the cost of prospecting. The universal drawback to all geophysical systems is that they yield "soft" data which are only presumed to be analogous to ore mineralization until they can be calibrated, by conventional prospecting systems, to each actual mineral environment being tested. By this time the system usually is no longer cheap. Since the raw data are too esoteric to be used until interpreted by geophysicists, usually in the light of their own personal theories and experience, the certainty of multiple interpretation is introduced. The concept of prospecting, at St. Joe Minerals Corporation's Viburnum, Fletcher and Brushy Creek mines in the new Missouri Lead Belt, encompasses surface diamond drilling for preliminary exploration, the sub¬sequent development of ore body tonnages and grades and the establishment of mining parameters. The predominantly flat-lying mineralized formation is mined by room and pillar stoping. In an operating mine, jackhammer holer are drilled in backs and bottoms of stopes, and chip samples are taken for assay, concurrent with mining. Thus irregularities in ore bodies or nearby discontinuities are not overlooked which are above or below the general mine

Polymer utilization has increased steadily over the past several decades; however, their usefulness is sometimes limited by natural forces. For example, polymers tend to degrade when subjected to elevated temperatures. This degradation can release toxic fumes, create excess smoke, and aid in the spread of fire. For these reasons, many polymers are filled with various compounds which impart flame retardancy (FR) properties. These fillers do not make polymers non-combustible; rather, they increase resistance to ignition and reduce bum rate. Also, they suppress smoke generation, which is important as up to 80% of fire-related deaths are due to smoke inhalation [1]. Therefore, methods to impart flame retardancy in polymers are industrially important. The early flame retardants used in polymers were halogen-based, working on the principle of inhibiting free radical formation in the vapour phase thus impeding combustion propagation [2]. Usually these were combined with antimony compounds such as Sb203 to decrease loading, yet provide the same FR qualities. However, questions have arisen recently concerning toxicity of halogenated flame retardants. Possible release of toxic compounds (such as dioxins) upon combustion has been reported [3]. Fear of future regulations concerning halogen addition has led to the search for different FR fillers. Two of the more common replacements for halogen-based systems are alumina trihydrate (Al(OH)3 or ATH), and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2)' These systems impart flame retardancy through heat absorption and by release of water of hydration upon their decomposition. ATH has a low decomposition temperature (230°C), limiting its use to unsaturated polymers, epoxies, urethanes, and some wire and cable formulations. However, some advantages of ATH over halogenated FR are that it is relatively cheap, doesn't generate toxic gases, is non-volatile, and is impervious to moisture [2].

In 1994 Newmont Gold Company commissioned a 2.5 Mt/a refractory gold ore roasting plant near Carlin Nevada. Many unique characteristics of this facility required use of specialized materials of construction in the areas of dry grinding, roasting, gas cleaning, and sulfuric acid production. Process conditions and design criteria that necessitated the use of special materials include; siliceous and abrasive ore, low roasting temperatures, gas streams with high concentrations of oxygen and sulfur, and stringent environmental regulations. Materials selected for use were ceramics, corrosion resistant steels, high temperature steels, and high temperature polymers, lead, polypropylene and low flammability PVC.

Novel chemicals that can be used for increasing the efficiency of fine coal dewatering were developed at Virginia Tech. Reagent A was tested on three different coal samples in laboratory vacuum filtration tests. These included flotation products from Middle Fork plant, Elkview Mining Company, and CONSOL, Inc. The tests conducted with the Middle Fork coal sample (100 mesh x 0) showed that cake moisture can be reduced by more than 10% beyond what can be achieved without using dewatering aid. This improvement was achieved at 1 lb/ton of Reagent A and 0.1 inch cake thickness. At 0.5 inches of cake thickness, the improvement was limited to 8% at the same reagent dosage. The results obtained with the Elkview coal (28 mesh x 0) showed similar advantages in using the novel dewatering aid. Depending on the reagent dosage, cake thickness, drying cycle time and temperature, it was possible to reduce the cake moisture to 12 to 14% range. In addition to achieving lower cake moisture, the use of Reagent A substantially decreased the cake formation time, indicating that the reagent improves the kinetics of dewatering. The test results obtained with CON SOL coal were not as good as with the other coals tested in the present work, which may be attributed to possible oxidation and/or contamination.

Conveyor systems are an essential part of many material movements in all conceivable areas of application. They are used to transport goods in raw materials extraction, agriculture, and even articles for daily use. In the process, not only distances of several kilometers but also differences in altitude of several hundred meters are bridged. The layout of the conveyor usually follows the topography at the respective installation site. Particularly in the case of large height differences, safety devices must be provided to prevent uncontrolled movement. Backstops can take over this task in predominantly ascending overland conveyors and are used either as a primary or as a secondary safety system in conjunction with a service brake. They are always used when the system comes to an unplanned standstill, whether due to a power failure, an emergency stop or a defect. When designing backstops, it must be ensured in any case that all conceivable circumstances are taken into account so that failure is ruled out without the product being unnecessarily large in size. Various safety factors are applied, some of which are even prescribed by authorities. One example is the Australian standard on machine safety for bulk material belt conveyors (AS/NZS 4024). This stipulates a redundant acceleration safety device that can absorb at least 150% of the maximum load. However, the coal industry's historical management practices must change to remain viable? The practices of the current day efficient coal mine manager are reviewed and examined using W. Edwards Deming's definition of management. The statistical tools, including Pareto Charts, Control Charts and Scatter Diagrams, which identify the problems management must approach differently to increase productivity at a coal mine, are discussed.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

Three coal samples, selected out of eight with well characterized surface properties, were used in flocculation tests and synthetic mixture of coal and silica was used in the selective flocculation experiments. Coal wettability and flocculant type were found to have a strong effect on the flocculation results.

Most governments recognize that energy efficiency represents a partial solution to reducing global capital shortages and environmental crises that threaten to seriously impede economic growth. Much of the United States and many foreign countries are embracing the concept of Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) which incorporates Supply Side Management (SSM) and Demand Side Management (DSM). Since SSM comes at twice to three times the cost of DSM, it makes economic sense to employ the energy conservation techniques of DSM. This paper will explain these concepts and some of the incentives being put forward by governments and utilities to promote DSM.

The importance of mineralogical and chemical characterization of fine particles in the fields of mineral and metallurgical processing is discussed. Emphasis is placed on electron beam analysis techniques including electron diffraction and energy dispersive analysis with special reference to the scanning trans- mission electron microscope. The correct choice of instrument depending upon particle size, composition and nature of sample is stressed and the analytica1 capabilities of different types of instruments are evaluated. Recent applications of electron beam equipment to processing problems are presented and the paper concludes with a review of new developments in the fields of surface analysis and micro-diffraction.

Ilmenite-rich lunar deposits can be converted to liquid oxygen to support lunar base operations and space transportation propulsion needs by a Carbotek-developed process. Iron oxide in ilmenite is reduced at elevated temperatures by hydrogen in a fluidized-bed reactor to water vapor which is electrolyzed to product oxygen and recycle hydrogen. Reaction rate, thermodynamic equilibrium, and lunar-gravity fluidization behavior are key factors which have been considered. Fluid-solids behavior has been modeled from data taken at lunar gravity conditions aboard NASA KC-135 flights. Large-scale pilot plant operations are planned to complete the development.

It is well established that the results of emulsion flotation in which water-insoluble oily collectors are utilized depend critically on the emulsification of the collector and on its conditioning with the pulp prior to flotation. The flotation tests carried out with magnesite and fluorite using sodium oleate as collector confirmed acidic and alkaline ranges of good flotation. While the flotation results in the acidic solutions depend strongly on the conditioning time and can be very much improved when longer conditioning times are utilized, the tests in the alkaline environment do not exhibit any significant dependence on conditioning. The results obtained with sodium salts of myristic and lauric acids confirm these findings. The observed effects provide additional evidence for the role of the colloidal species which appear in the acidic solutions of weak electrolyte type surfactants, such as fatty acids. The flotation properties of sodium oleate in the pH region in which it appears in the form of oleic acid droplets are mainly determined by the properties of such droplets. The flotation in this pH region closely resembles an emulsion flotation.
