In a complex society such as ours, the range of "negotiating" relationships is constantly increasing. These negotiating relationships have emerged as a direct result of the diffusion of power or influence to new sectors and emerging concerns. Even within organizations, the myth of the authority-based heirarchical structure has given way to the reality of constant negotiations between superior and subordinate and with peers in the organizational structure. In the broader context, the corporate organization finds it necessary to reckon and often negotiate with organized employees, suppliers, buyers, government agencies and a range of organized private interests ranging from minority groups to environmental organizations. In response to this diffusion of power and the conflicts which it has engendered, a variety of conflict avoidance, conflict managing or conflict resolution techniques has developed. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to differentiate between some of the conflict intervention approaches which have appeared "on the market", and to suggest three bases for selecting among them: 1. The "role" of the conflict intervenor; 2. How far the conflict has developed; and 3. The breadth and impact of the issues involved.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a testing program to assess the effects of lateral loading on various standing supports used in underground coal mines. This study is not intended to endorse a particular type of standing supports nor to provide a comparison between different types of standing supports. This paper aims to measure the lateral loading capacity of two types of standing supports and evaluate how it affects their vertical loading capacity and yielding mechanisms. The study utilizes the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at NIOSH Pittsburgh. Type-1 support is characterized by telescopic tubes made from ASTM A-513 steel with a specified locking mechanism, and Type-2 support comprises a single component constructed from ASTM A500 Welded Grade C pipe. Vertical load tests were carried out to assess the designed performance of Type-1 and Type-2 props. Type-1 props demonstrated a "constant yielding" behavior, achieving an ultimate capacity of up to 140 kips. Type-2 props showed a "load shedding" behavior, reaching peak verti- cal loads of up to 191 kips. Buckling analysis revealed that Type-1 props were not designed to buckle, and Type-2 props failed due to buck- ling rather than material yielding. Under vertical pre-loading, lateral loading tests showed that Type-1 props can withstand about 9 kips, and Type-2 props can withstand about 10.79 kips of lateral load. This represents roughly 6% of their vertical loading capacities. Testing props under lateral loads in addition to their intended vertical loads showed that the lateral loads could influence their loading mechanisms. Type-1 props did not exhibit the expected "constant yielding" behavior under lateral load but instead showed "load shedding" decreasing their rated vertical capacity by 70%. At high vertical pre-loading, Type-2 props demonstrated "constant yielding" behavior instead of the anticipated "load shedding," leading to a 60% reduction in their rated vertical capacity. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of these props under different loading conditions, aiding in their efficient use and design in underground mining operations.

Petrographic properties of carbonate rocks are useful guides to the utilization of these rocks in SO2-scrubbing systems. High porosity and fineness of grain are thought to be the principal properties that contribute to high dissolution rates of the rocks in the scrubbing liquor. Lake marls and chalks are the major types of carbonate rocks that have these properties. Lake marls are composed mainly of equant grains of calcite (mean grain size generally less than 4 microns) weakly agglomerated in- to larger, porous particles. The marls commonly consist of 80 to 90 percent CaCo3 as calcite and aragonite. Impurities are, for the most part, quartz silt and organic matter. The average pore volume for samples of lake marls (1- to 1.2-mm particles) is about 0.50 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 57 percent. The mean size of pores in these marls is generally between 1 and 2 microns in diameter. Surface areas of lake marls range from 0.8 to 6.8 m2/g. Chalks have grain sizes and shapes similar to those of lake marls, but they generally have smaller amounts of quartz and organic matter and minor amounts of clay minerals. Pore volumes differ from one chalk formation to another; the 1- to 1. 2-mm particles average about 0.20 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 35 percent. The mean diameter of pores in chalks tested ranges from 0. 15 to 0.76 micron. Surface areas of chalks range from 3. 2 to 20. 1 m2/g. In the United States lake marls are restricted largely to Pleistocene- age sediments that occur in the states around the Great Lakes. Chalk and chalky limestones are restricted mainly to the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary strata in the Kansas-Nebraska-Colorado area and in the south- eastern states, from Texas to Florida. Results of laboratory tests of the relative dissolution rates of samples at pH 6 and 44°C indicate that, in addition to many lake marls and chalks, oolitic aragonite, pelecypod shells, and carbonate waste sludges from certain industrial plants also have high dissolution rates.

Advances in borehole geophysical research for mineral assaying, and remote detection of mineralization away from the borehole. Nuclear activation measurement research has provided accurate in situ assays of economic metals with neutron-gamma activation, using a high resolution intrinsic-germanium detector. Although nuclear activation analysis is the present "best-hope" for obtaining in situ assays for some elements, gamma-gamma and magnetic susceptibility measurements can provide accurate assays for lead-zinc and magnetite, respectively. Borehole optical spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence are being investigated as possible in situ assaying techniques for some minerals. More laboratory and field calibration research is needed before nonlinear complex resistivity (NLCR) can be routinely used as a quantitative assaying tool. Field tests have shown that variations in the local geologic environment can affect the quantitative accuracy of assay values from downhole NLCR measurements. Deeply penetrating borehole geophysical methods are increasingly being used for mineral exploration as drilling costs and exploration have increased. Borehole electrical measurements have been shown to be useful for detecting conductive orebodies that are not interesected by a drillhole. Hole-to-surface resistivity, and surface-to-hole time-domain electromagnetics are demonstrated to be particularly effective for defining mineralized zones in a massive sulfide environment. Borehole gravity meters and three-component magnetometers have been developed and should prove useful for defining geologic anomalies away from the drillhole.

Florida produced more than eighty percent of domestic phosphate during 1974. This amounted to more than thirty-five million short tons. Ninety percent of this production was used in the production of fertilizers. Other uses of phosphate include food preservatives, fabric dyes, optical glass, photographic films, soaps, plastics, pharmaceuticals and animal feed ingredients. Marketable phosphate rock projections for the nest decade forecast a very healthy growth for the Florida phosphate industry. Associated with the expansion, however, are the corresponding problems of water conservation, air and water pollution and land reclamation. Recognizing mining as an interim land use, the industry is presently engaged in a very active reclamation program. The proximity of the central Florida deposits to rapidly developing urban areas makes it important to undertake successful and well planned reclamation programs. Water use and conservation is of vitil importance to the industry. Water withdrawal from existing aquifers and discharges into drainage systems are closely regulated by state agencies. Water is stored and recycled to maximize usage. In some instances water is even returned to major aquifers through a series of recharge or connector wells. The phosphate industry has spent over 200 million dollars in the past decade for research, development and implementation of pollution abatement and water conservation systems.1 The following discussion outlines various phases of phosphate mining in central Florida today, with emphasis on research in waste disposal techniques and progressive land reclamation programs.

The determination of the proper cutoff grade for an open pit metal mine is based on economic criteria and the operating philosophy of the mining company. Previous papers have dealt with the balance of a fixed mine production capacity versus economic return. Mine production capacity is often controlled by the amount of mining equipment and the working area in the pit. A complete cutoff grade strategy is a balance of economic return of mining higher grade material versus the capital costs of additional production capacity and the operating cost of moving the waste and low grade material to assure proper ore release. An approach to the problem is presented which is based in part on work by previous authors and provides guidelines to proper cutoff grade strategy encompassing the time value of money and variable commodity prices.

The Çayirhan coal basin is located 124 km (77 miles) west of Ankara,Turkey. With approximately 520 Mt (570 million st) of lignite reserves, the Neogene Çayirhan basin is one of the important coal districts of the central Anatolia region. The Çoraklar formation consists of crossbedded sandstone, channel fill conglomerates, mudstones, carbonaceous shales and volcanoclastic pebblestones, which are fluvial in origin. The lower and upper lignite seams occur, respectively, in the lower and the uppermost parts of the Çoraklar formation. The lignite deposits are in the Çayirhan and Koyunagili portions of the Beypazari Neogene basin. The Çayirhan coalfield consists of lower and upper lignite seams. The lower lignite seam does not outcrop at the surface. Its lateral discontinuity and relatively low sulfur content, plus sedimentologic and stratigraphic features of the associated sediments, indicate a fluvial origin. Thus, the lateral spreading and geometry of the lower lignite deposits were controlled by the channel, flood plain and well drained marshes of a fluvial system. The mining method employed at Çayirhan is the fullymechanized, retreat, working longwall with caving system. Due to ventilation, haulage and tectonic conditions, panel lengths from 0.6 to 1.7km (0.4 to 1.1 miles) are chosen, and 220-m (720ft) face lengths are used. The annual coal production is 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st).

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calculations where the compliance limit of lbs SO2/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equations to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs SO2/million Btu, the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess% = 0.5 - 0.6*13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C[<] 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. In these equations: •W is the total weight; •A, B and C are the fractional proportions of each potential blend stocks; •Sa, Sb and Sc represent the percent sulfur content of the blend stocks; •Ha, Hb and Hc represent the calorific content of the blend stocks in Btu/lb; and •H and S represent calorific and sulfur contents of the composite blend. After being forgotten or ignored for nearly 100 years, the ability of bromine chemistry to extract gold from ore has been rediscovered. While bromine chemistry is similar to chlorine, there are some important differences. Bromine in its elemental form is a dense, fuming, red liquid. Elemental chlorine is a gas and requires a substantial amount of equipment to handle, store and deliver to solution. Bromine has an advantage in its ability to rapidly and completely oxidize heavy metals to water soluble halide salts. The first patent for use of bromine chemistry for gold extraction was issued in 1881 (1). By 1895, work done in Colorado concluded well roasted ores required approximately 1-1/2 lbs/ton of elemental bromine for superior extraction of metals (2)). At that time, bromine was deemed to be cost effective vs. chlorine even though it was more expensive on a pound basis than chlorine. The advent of cyanide technology virtually eliminated both chlorine and bromine from consideration for leaching of ores. Cyanide was so inexpensive that it made deposits requiring unique technologies unattractive for mining. Only since the deregulation of gold price has bromine/chlorine technology been considered for those ores not amenable to cyanide. While chlorine has found its way into the pretreatment steps, bromine is just beginning to realize its niche in the marketplace.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents (1) modified slipform system which was employed for simultaneous concrete placement for permanent lining and Instruction of a partition wall in the execution of a ventilation shaft 620m deep, and (2) current shaft sinking techniques which have been applicable and efficient for the subsurface conditions in Japan. MODIFIED SLIPFORM SYSTEM FOR PERMANENT LINING OF VERTICAL SHAFT General Information This paragraph deals with rapid construction by using modified slipform system for the permanent concrete lining and a partition wall of ventilation shaft, which has inside diameter of 620m and depth of 620m, of Enasan Highway Tunnel. The general feature of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 1 and standard section of the shaft is illustrated in Fig. 2. The geological condition surrounding the shaft is mainly of ryolite and surface is of talus, but as a whole, they are rather weak and weathered rocks with faults, fissures and clay seams. 220mm borehole for the geological investigation was used as a drainage hole, predicting the amount of water inflow into the shaft to be 10t/min. The shaft was executed mainly by means of the conventional short step sinking method of 1.2m lift, employing temporary headframe and hoists. The geology of the Gulf Coast Salt domes has been extensively studied by Kupfer (1,2,3,4,5), Atwater (6,7), Balk (81, Hawkins (9), and Wharton (10). dominant geological feature of Southern Louisiana is the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The axis of this geosyncline corresponds with the present day coastline of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. This geosyncline has been continually subsiding since Cretaceous times and receiving large deltaic accumulations of sediments from Central North America. These accumulations progressively thicken toward the South. In the vicinity of the Coast, these sediments are reported to be about 40,000 feet thick. Another dominant feature of the region is the large number of salt domes scattered along the Gulf Coast (fig. 1). Typically, these domes are roughly cylindrical in shape, 1 to 5 miles in diameter, and extend to more than 20,000 feet in depth. It is hypothesized that these domes are derived from the thick Louann salt formation lying below the deltaic sediments. Due to its low specific gravity and buoyancy, the salt layer protruded upwards plastically and pierced the overlying strata. As a result of this upward flow, the adjacent strata are locally lifted upwards, creating excellent traps for petroleum accumulation.

Semiautogenous (SAG) ball mills are being increasingly used today for the coarse grinding of a range of ores, including gold, copper and iron. Larger mines are demanding mills with larger throughputs. This has led to some remarkable developments in mill diameters and installed powers. Conventional design principles - mills with trunnion bearings - have reached their limitations. This article describes one SAG mill with a slide-shoe arrangement and Krupp Polysius&apos; Combiflex twin drive. In August 1997, the world&apos;s largest SAG mill with a slide-shoe arrangement was commissioned in Queensland, Australia, operating as a wet mill. The inside diameter is 10.4 x 5.1 m (34 x 17 ft) effective grinding length. The 1.36-ktlh (1,500-stph) SAG mill is driven by two Combiflex drives (twin drives with 2 x 5,500-MW or 7,375-hp installed motor power) in conjunction with a girth gear (outside diameter 11,890 mm or 468 in.). Commissioning of the SAG mill was completed with no notable technical difficulties. The plant runs continuously except for planned maintenance stoppages and process-specific reasons. As this article is written, the machine has been in operation for about 8,000 hours without major problems.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. The sequence of events which results in the formation of Porphyry deposits (Figure 1) can be summarized as the result of collision of crustal plates, subduction of the oceanic plate, emplacement of a serpentine ultrabasic diapir, formation of a dioritic magma at depths of 300 to 500 km, rise of the magma to a sub crustal or intra-crustal chamber, eruption of andesitic volcanoes, emplacement of diorite or differentiation of the magma into more acidic products, multiple intrusion of hypabyssal rocks and hydro-

Introduction There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices . •The time value of invested money was not considered to be important under these "stable" prices, and inflation was assumed to be nonexistent in the planned economy. •An overestimation of the value of social and economic factors such as keeping the local population employed and providing the country with strategic minerals biased the economic evaluations of projects. Sequence of exploration Geological exploration in the CIS countries typically includes two major phases: prospecting and exploration. Prospecting consists of the following: •Regional geological studies. •General prospecting. •Prospecting. •Prospect evaluation. Regional geological studies are conducted within large territories and utilize satellite images, deep seismic zoning and other state-of-the-art methods. Geological and geophysical maps on a scale of from 1:200000 to 1:1000000 are developed to help identify regional anomalies and mineral prospective areas. The areas of primary interest are then subjected to general prospecting, beginning with geological mapping of the area at 1:50000 (1:25000) scale. The prospecting phase determines mineral potential based on further geological mapping (mostly 1:10000 scale), surface geophysics and geochemistry. Finally, the most attractive targets are subjected to further detailed evaluation (prospect evaluation) to help identify "possible" projects by means of trenching and wide-spaced drilling. The results of the prospect evaluation are analyzed and conclusions regarding the economical potential of the project are drawn. If the initial-prospecting phase results are positive and the prospect is recognized as economical, it then moves into preliminary exploration, which is followed by detailed exploration. Preliminary exploration determines the feasibility of the project on the basis of limited data. For example, in some underground projects, the initial exploration drilling and tunneling is done at two or three times wider spacing than would be required by the assumed mining method. Detailed exploration focuses on preparing the project for mining development, such as completing drilling and tunneling, particularly in the portion of the ore body to be first mined. During the project&apos;s mining phase, further exploration is usually conducted along the flanks of the mineralized structures and deeper sections of the ore body. Finally, during exploitation, it is sometimes necessary to delineate the ore body within the mining-block limits. A comparison between the United States (US) sequence of exploration activities and the CIS system is given in the Table 1. There is no "additional" and "exploitation" exploration shown in the US system, but it is common knowledge that all mineral projects are subjected to "additional" and "exploitation" exploration while being mined. Brace yourself-what used to be a 1 billion ton deposit is now a 1 Gt deposit. And that 1520-hp ball mill is now a 1.134-MW ball mill. Beginning with this issue, all engineering units and statistics in MINING ENGINEERING will be reported in SI units. The exception to this is the Technical Papers section, where units may still be reported by dual notation. For the past four years, ME has reported all units of measurement first in SI, followed in parentheses by the equivalent English value. This metrication policy, adopted by the SME-AIME Board of Directors in September 1975, was designed to aid magazine readers through a transitional period from English unit reporting to SI unit reporting. In October 1979, the SME-AIME Publications Board completed the English-to-SI transition by requesting the editorial staff, beginning February 1980, to report exclusively in SI. The Publications Board also requested the editors to prepare a chart of SI conversions useful to ME readers; this information follows on pages 156-157. The What and Wherefore of SI In 1960 the General Conference on Weights and Measures met in Sevres, France, and recommended that a new metric system-one that could uniformly cross all international borders-be adopted to replace all other metric systems. The outcome of this recommendation was the SI system of units, an abbreviation for le Systeme International d&apos;Unites (the International System of Units). It replaces the more familiar cgs (centimeter-gram-second) system and the m/ksA (meter-kilogram-second-Ampere) system. SI consists of seven base units, two supplementary units, and a number of derived units. Other units, called allowable units, may be used even though they are not part of SI. The seven base units are: meter (length); second (time); kilogram (mass); mole (amount of substance); kelvin (temperature); ampere (electric current); and candela (luminous intensity). The two supplementary units are radian, a measurement of plane angle, and steradian, a measurement of solid angle. Supplementary units can be used in combination with SI units, e.g., radiant intensity is expressed in W/sr, watts per steradian. Derived units are combinations of base and supplementary units. Velocity is expressed as meters per second (m/s), and acceleration as m/s&apos;. Using the relation established by Newton&apos;s second law of motion, force is expressed as kg-m/s2, more commonly known as the newton (N). Energy (work) is force times distance, expressed as kg-m/s2 and known as the joule (J). Power is work per unit time, expressed as kg, m2/s3 and known as the watt (W). Allowable units are the exception to the rule-they are not taken from base or supplementary units but, nevertheless, are used in the SI system. Volume units are normally expressed as the cubic measure of a length, such as cm 3. But a fluid volume of a cubic decimeter (dm3) is called a liter (L); the "L" is capitalized in another special SI rule to keep the lowercase "1" from being confused with a numeric "1". Other allowable units are degrees Celsius (°C) for temperature; and the minute (min), hour (h), day (d), and year (a) for time measurements. The prefixes in the table on the following page are used with SI units to express the magnitude of a measured quantity. A mill that processes 1000 tons of ore per day would be designated a 1 kt/d mill; a mine producing 10 million tons of ore per year would be called a 10 Mt/a mine. The rule here is to use prefixes that keep the value in a convenient range from 0.1 to 1000. In other words, it would be incorrect to write 25 000 kg-the prefix should be changed to indicate 25 Mt. One of the distinct advantages of SI is that it retains the decimal relation between multiples and submultiples of the base units for each physical quantity except for time. One more rule of SI syntax-numbers are separated into groups of three with a space between each group rather than a comma, e.g., 3,839,174 becomes 3 839 174. By the same token, a decimal number is also broken by spaces, e.g. 0.738153 is written as 0.738 153.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical&apos;s Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Although not generally recognized, Arizona has rock salt deposits unique in the United States. This uniqueness stems from a combination of two factors: (1) relatively youthful geologic age and (2) nonmarine origin. Although Arizona shares one deposit with Nevada (Figure 1, No. I) there are three others within the State (Nos. 2, 4, 5) that are believed to be both late Cenozoic in age (less than 15 million years) and nonmarine in origin. The only other recognized nonmarine salt deposits in the U.S. are much older, being in the early Cenozoic (Eocene) Green River Formation of Colorado and Wyoming. According to Johnson and Gonzales (1), the remaining rock salt deposits in the United States are marine and either Paleozoic or Mesozoic in age. Of the seven localities shown in Figure 1, six in the Basin and Range geologic province are believed to represent nomarine late Cenozoic phenomena and one (No. 7) in the Colorado Plateau geologic province is Paleozoic (Permian) in age and marine in origin. The following comments are intended to update the general geologic highlights of these deposits and to summarize the nature of their present utilization.

REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

"The Regional Connector Transit Corridor is a 1.9 mile long light rail transit project in downtown Los Angeles, California. The project includes approximately 4,930 feet of twin bored tunnels together with a mined crossover cavern, 3 deep stations, and other cut-and-cover structures. The bored tunnels will be excavated using an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine through Fernando Formation (extremely weak to weak rock) and alluvium. The tunneling will be performed in close proximity to a large number of existing structures, including the existing Metro Red Line tunnels with as little as 6 feet of separation. Thus, the evaluations of the tunneling effect on these structures and the instrumentation and monitoring program is an essential part of the project design. This paper provides a very brief overview of the considerations and evaluations of the tunneling effects on the existing structures and results of evaluation obtained during the final design stage of the project. INTRODUCTION The proposed Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) project provides a 1.9 mile-long connection between the Metro Gold Line from Pasadena and East Los Angeles; and the Metro Blue Line to Long Beach and the Expo Line to Culver City. The alignment is shown in Figure 1. The Regional Connector will provide new tracks through downtown Los Angeles. The project will extend underground from the Metro Blue, Expo, Red, and Purple Lines’ 7th Street/Metro Center Station following Flower Street, curving northeast to the north of 3rd Street under the 2nd Street Tunnel. The alignment will then continue eastward under 2nd Street, turning northeast to cross under the intersection of 1st and Alameda Streets, then splitting into two branches above the ground surface, one branch extending north along Alameda Street and the other extending east along 1st Street. The project elements include 3 deep stations, a SEM cavern, segments of TBM bored tunnels, and cut-and-cover guideway structures. The bored tunnels have an excavated diameter of 20.3 feet. The subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment generally consist of artificial fill overlaying finer-grained alluvium (dominantly medium dense to dense sandy soils), underlain by coarser-grained alluvium (a wide variety of medium dense to dense sandy and gravely soils). Below the coarser-grained alluvium is Fernando Formation, which is characterized as extremely weak to very weak sedimentary bedrock. A long stretch of the alignment will be excavated in this formation. The soil layers above the Fernando Formation are of variable thickness and spatial distribution. The geologic profile is shown in Figure 2."

This chapter on the role of minerals in developing economies is oriented toward economic policy issues. The discussion and analysis cut across the technical, economic, legal, and policy fields. The goal of this chapter is to pro- vide relevant background information important to individuals involved with the minerals sector in developing countries. Where possible, trends are shown to provide a basis for understanding the evolving role of minerals in developing economies. This chapter is divided into the following five sections: (1) characteristics of developing countries (which presents selected statistical comparisons); (2) government objectives in developing countries; (3) government policy formulation in developing countries; (4) determinants of future trends, and (5) a summary of the chapter&apos;s major points combined with the authors&apos; view. CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES There are 155 nations in the world categorized as "developing countries." In total these nations represent about one third of the value of the world&apos;s mineral production, three quarters of the world&apos;s population, and over half of the world&apos;s land surface area. The group of so-called developing countries is quite diverse and there are exceptions to almost any general observation about the group as a whole. Most definitions of the term "developing country" are based on levels of per capita income. However, if per capita income is the sole criterion used in categorization, then several oil-exporting countries would jump from the category of developing country to the category of developed country.a Obviously, this results in a poor fit with respect to other measures. In general, the majority of developing countries can be characterized by relatively low per capita income, high population growth rates, high levels of unemployment, low levels of education, short average life ex- pectancies, income distribution skewed toward the highest 20% of the population, and a large share of exports represented by primary commodities. b For the purposes of this chapter a slightly modified version of the widely used World Bank system of classification (shown in Table 1.2.1) is used. As summarized in Table 1.2.1, developing countries are divided into three main groups based on estimated gross national product (GNP) per capita. It should be noted that the high- income, oil-exporting countries have characteristics of both developing and industrialized countries; however they are included for most statistical comparisons within the group of developing countries.
