Attendees at December?s Arizona SME Section Conference at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort outside of Tucson, AZ were feeling optimistic and ready to get to work after a year of steady growth and recovery in the mining industry. During the two-day event (Dec. 5-6, 2010) and the preceding American Mining Hall of Fame banquet and awards ceremony, the focus was on copper, worldwide population growth and regulatory pressures, with several smart new projects featured alongside updates to traditional large-scale copper development projects. Keynote speaker Timothy Snider, chair of the University of Arizona?s Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources, hit the mood of cautious optimism when he analyzed the global demand for resources, using the case example of copper. Over the next 20 years, he said, the world?s population is expected to grow to 9.2 billion and the average annual per capita copper use is expected to rise from 2.2 to 4.5 kg (5 to 10 lb). The increase in demand will provide tremendous opportunity for mining companies, he said, but cautioned that the opportunities are balanced by negative influences on demand and pressures on supply. While demand for copper is currently growing, Snider noted that there were significant downward pressures on demand as well. These included a western world that is overbuilt, in-creasing use of substitute materials in new construction and the rise of wireless devices. He also noted new regulatory pressures, and pointed out that resource development now had to occur within a context of sustainability on several levels.

The bucket elevator is probably the oldest known form of conveyor. Its history can be traced back to the days of Babylon where wicker baskets lined with a natural pitch and fastened to ropes operating over wooden sheaves turned by slaves, were used for the elevating of water into irrigation ditches. It is not unnatural for the bucket elevator to be the first in history, for even today engineers and designers recognize that well designed, correctly applied bucket elevators offer unequaled advantages over other bulk material elevating methods. The bucket elevator's vertical design saves valuable floor space. It provides flexibility of machinery layout with lowest initial capital expenditure, which is its principal advantage. While the advantages of the bucket elevator have long been recognized, there has been a tendency to lean away from its use because of high maintenance without reliability. CHAIN Belt Company found that the bucket elevator, if correctly applied, can be built to be as dependable and reliable as any other piece of machinery in today's modern processing plants. It is not difficult to understand why the bucket elevator is looked upon sometimes as a necessary evil in the material handling system. Very little has been published or written about the specific use or application of bucket elevators other than in manufacturers catalogs. Most of today's elevator application was set forth at the turn of the century by Hetzel (1). There have been many improvements made in the manufacturing techniques of elevator components, improvements in material selections, all which can be used to improve today's bucket elevator. To best understand the improvements which have taken place recently in the design and application of bucket elevators, an understanding of basic elevator principles is desirable. In general, it can be said that bucket elevators are classified into two basic types : (1) centrifugal discharge and (2) continuous. Elevators in use today are either of the centrifugal discharge type or the continuous type, or a combination of both in special applications.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. Assuming, as did Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson, that their numerical model is an accurate predictor, it is clear that the modification incorporated in equation (2) improves the accuracy of preliminary estimates of ground water flow to a pit.[ ] References Jacob, C.E and Lohman. Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. Attempts have been made during the last three decades to establish a correlation between respirable dust dosage and the degree of progression of pneumoconiosis or silicosis amongst mine workers. Fair correlation has been possible only after the Johannesburg Pneumoconiosis Conference established mass concentration of dust in the respirable size range as the true measure of the incidence of pneumoconiosis. The author had established a good correlation between cumulative total respirable dust dosage as well as cumulative silica dosage and the category of pneumoconiosis according to ILO classification at Mufulira Copper Mine. Studies at Hutti also show a linear relationship between the average cumulative dust and silica dosage md the category of pneumoconiosis. However the maximum tolerable cumulative dust dosage for - prolonged exposure is 182 mg month/m3 - at Hutti as compared to 275 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. Similarly the maximum tolerable silica dosage for - prolonged exposure is Only 35 mg month/m3 at Hutti as compared to 55 mg month/m3 at Mufulira. The TLV for dust concentration at Hutti works out at 0.6 mg/m3 compared to 1.1 mg/m3 at Mufulira and the TLV of silica concentration at Hutti is 0.117 mg/m3 compared to 0.25 mg/m3 at Mufulira. The Hutti figure is however, closer to the TLV of 0.1 mg/m 3 recommended by ACGIH.

Stability of fine quartz suspensions in process water is of concern in several mineral processing applications. In alkaline solutions, the presence of magnesium ions, arising from such sources as water hardness and magnesium-bearing minerals, leads to the precipitation of Mg(OH)2 which coats the surfaces of quartz. The conditions under which heterocoagulation or surface precipitation of Mg(OH)2 on quartz occur and the manner in which they influence the settling behavior of ground quartz was studied by means of settling tests, coating density determinations, zeta potential measurements and electron microscope observations. Coating density was greater when Mg(OH)2 nucleated on the surface of quartz than when the precipitates heterocoagulated on the quartz surface. The settling curves of quartz suspensions in the presence of different concentrations of MgCl2 exhibited a maximum of maxima which occurred at 10-3M MgC12 and pH 11. Interactions between quartz and Mg(OH)2, and flocculation-dispersion characteristics of quartz suspensions in this system are discussed.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calcula¬tions where the compliance limit of lbs S02/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equa¬tions to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu; the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess%o = 0.5 - 0.6-13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C<- 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. In these equations: ? W is the total weight; ? A, B and C are the fractional proportions of each potential blend stocks; ? Sa, Sb and Sc represent the percent sulfur content of the blend stocks; ? The truly educated man is better prepared to meet the challenge of the times. This challenge can be either beneficial or harmful depending upon one s orientation, Certainly man can no longer continue in the way of his father or even in the manner of his own previous experience as he seeks self-fulfillment, unless he is willing to sacrifice inner integrity--unless he is willing to compromise self-determination and self-expression. He must make a choice as society moves rapidly into high gear in the areas of automation and cybernetics. Industry, a unit of society, has a high stake in meeting this challenge, The better prepared and more mature its personnel, the better the end result as it attempts to meet the challenge. It therefore has a vital concern in proper training of such personnel, that their contribution will be of maximum quality. The specialized training required demands a broad liberal arts background which gives the individual a wider perspective upon which to base judgment. This greatly aids his development as he enters graduate school or goes directly into industry. In either case, his value to industry is enhanced. It would seem that the small liberal arts college provides the best environment for such a program, Consideration of several factors will, I hope, throw some light on the severity of the problem.

"Despite the difficult economic climate for the mining industry, more than 6,300 people joined SME for its 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 21-24.Nearly every commodity has been bruised and battered during the past year, leading to one of the more difficult cycles for the industry in the past decade. Coal has taken some of the hardest hits and other commodities, such as copper and iron ore, have felt the sting of a slower growth in China and an oversupply on the market.The difficult conditions could not be ignored, but they did not deter SME from offering a forum for the industry to share knowledge, network with peers and learn about the best products and practices while visiting the sold-out exhibit hall (844 booths and 627 vendors) or while attending any of the 121 technical sessions that were offered.The current state of the industry was one of the overriding themes of the conference and during the challenging times there are often cutbacks as operations look to become leaner and more efficient, however, there is one area that cannot be cut – health and safety.The conference kicked off with a fascinating presentation from Colonel Mike Mullane, a former NASA astronaut who, in 1978, was selected as a Mission Specialist Astronaut in the first group of space shuttle astronauts. He completed three space missions and logged 356 hours in space aboard the shuttles Discovery and Atlantis before retiring from NASA and the U.S. Air Force in 1990.In his speech to a packed audience, he warned of the dangers of cutting corners to get the job done more quickly by guarding against the “normalization of deviance.”Normalization of deviance is a long-term phenomenon in which individuals or teams repeatedly accept a lower standard of performance until that lower standard becomes the norm. Usually, the acceptance of the lower standard occurs because the individual or team is under pressure (budget, schedule, etc.) and perceives it will be too difficult to adhere to the original higher standard. Their intention may be to revert back to the higher standard when this period of pressure passes. However, by getting away with the deviation from the higher standard, it is likely they will do the same thing when the same stressful circumstances arise again. Over time, the individual/team fails to see their actions as deviant."

The demand for good white minerals for many industries including paint and plastics have made it necessary to import high grade industrial minerals from various parts of the world. Some of the calcium carbonate, barite and talc minerals are from China, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti. These materials can be processed by custom processors. The custom processor can provide a service to the Industrial Mineral owner. The imported materials can arrive in various feed sizes from lumps (3"-6") down to 325 mesh. The materials can also be in various size shipments or container loads. The economics for importing should be investigated thoroughly. The two factors just mentioned can influence the quantity of material to be processed. These two factors can also influence the total cost for each end product.

As part of the Bureau of Mines research on the In-Situ Uranium Leaching, various geophysical resistivity measuring techniques were -evaluated to identify a rapid reliable method for detecting the underground migration of lixiviant outside of the planned limits. Surface and downhole galvanic resistivity and controlled source audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) methods were tested at an in-situ uranium mine in Northern Wyoming during start-up of a new mining area. Downhole galvanic and AMT were the most promising techniques.

Not everyone understands the concept of mineral royalty. Mineral royalty is a fee paid to a landowner by someone who extracts a mineral commodity from the owners property. The royalty contract between the lessor and lessee contains clauses and conditions that are significant to both parties, e.g., annual m1n1mum, escalation factor, duration of the lease, reclamation and assignability. Comparison of royalty rates requires knowledge of many conditions that influence the value of a given deposit. People in several different professions benefit from shared royalty information.

The purpose of this study was to seek and evaluate possible relationships between the composition of coal refuse, as expressed by washability data, and factors affecting the product ion of a lightweight aggregate from refuse by bloating. The study was related to an intense program in the Department of Mineral Preparation at the Pennsylvania State University to study the possible elimination of air pollution from coal refuse fires by producing a low- carbon secondary refuse. Another phase of this program is considering possible uses of such a secondary refuse. Thus one study was to determine if a lightweight aggregate could be produced from this new refuse material and what effect the nature of refuse beneficiation would have upon the characteristics of a commercial aggregate product.

A microcomputer equipped with spreadsheet, data management, and FOR- TRAN programming software is used to update and quantify a model for ranking seventeen economically important metal commodities in terms of market potential (Huyck, 1982). Weighted factors are used for the ranking: (1) demand growth trends, (2) end-use substitution vulnerability, (3) recycling trends, (4) price trends, and (5) cumulative demand versus world reserves factor. Price trends are defined using (1) price-vs.-year slopes (with prices in 1967 constant dollars) and (2) standard deviations of slopes (to indicate price volatility). Substitution vulnerability is defined as the percent of end-use which is replace- able by other commodities, and a factor indicating the likelihood of such substitution. Factors are normalized and linearly combined to produce a ranking of the seventeen metals. Microcomputer software is essential for organizing data and calculating statistical parameters and linear combinations of factors.

The principles of classification of reserves and resources in the Soviet Union were developed in 1960. Mineral reserve calculations were reviewed by the State Committee on Reserves for approval, then registered in the State List of Mineral Deposits and included in the State Balance of the Reserves. In 1981, however, a new "System of Classification of Reserves and Resources of Mineral Deposits" was adopted. This classification system (Table 1) is still used today in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It subdivides mineral concentrations into seven categories in three major groups, based on the level of exploration performed: explored reserves (A, B, C,), evaluated reserves (C) and prognostic resources (P1, P2, P3). Explored reserves Explored reserves are calculated within exploration contours. Category A The A category is the highest level of classification for any given mineral deposit and requires comprehensive exploration. First, the ore body&apos;s position, shape and structure must be accurately delineated (Fig. 1). Next, the mineralogy of the ore body must be studied to determine its composition and properties as well as the distribution of both ore and detrimental components. It is also necessary to outline the blocks of barren rocks and limits of subeconomic ores and to distinguish between the different types, grades and physical-chemical properties (mineral texture and structure) of the ore, the

Many processes in the hydrometallurgical and chemical industries require the separation of dissolved material from suspended solids. Counter current decantation (CCD) with thickeners is one of the methods generally used. The process engineer needs a quick and accurate CCD calculation method. Several theoretical 1-12 CCD calculation methods are available in the literature . The simultaneous 1, 2 equation method for a complex circuit as used would take too long to solve the problems. Approximate equation method1 is not accurate and is for simple cases only. A shortcut method developed by Counselman3 contains no mathematical equation, and thus is not suitable for computer programming. Based on Counselman&apos;s method, Woody4 derived two simple equations in terms of percent soluble loss for two typical examples. Scandrett5 included a term for mixing in his formulas. This mixing efficiency was defined by Murphree6. Another method which depends on making volume calculations instead of using weights is presented by Mastin8 and Cahalan9. None of these methods is related to dissolution and pre¬cipitation reactions. Chen 10,11 demonstrated his methods for counter current leaching. His results are calculated from the general solution of a derived linear difference equation for constant underflow, and from the solution of a derived non-linear Ricatti difference equation for variable underflow. This paper concerns derivation of a general equation for CCD washing with provisions for adding and withdrawing the streams, and for leaching (dissolution) or precipitation reactions. Since the 1981 record of 54 mm tons of US fertilizer consumption, grain surpluses in the US have brought about massive acreage reduction programs, decreased fertilizer consumption, and resulting price pressures caused by excess capacity. The strong US dollar that reduced export sales of both grain and fertilizer, and new offshore manufacturing capacity using US engineering/contracting know-how have combined to put US producers of phosphate fertilizers in uncompetitive postures. While recent events suggest the industry may be growing out of this capacity problem, the cost of US phosphates will continue to be disadvantaged by such external factors as taxes, environ- mental regulations, and high power costs. There is no reason to expect help from the government in the form of reduced environmental regulation and taxation. In order to survive, phosphate fertilizer producers will have to develop technologies and adopt strategies that result in world competitive production costs. Current responses to the need to reduce costs include reduced energy costs through cogeneration, innovative reclamation techniques that create valuable land, and in- creased raw material recovery achieved by operator proficiency. While new technology offers long-term benefits for the producer, present efforts are concentrated on more mundane management efforts to reduce costs. Major attention is being given to the problems of labor utilization and productivity. Raw materials suppliers are being asked to renegotiate contracts which more appropriately reflect conditions in an industry operating at about 50% of capacity. Achievements in these and other areas will allow the producers to continue operating until longer term benefits materialize. `

The removal of arsenic from process streams as ferric arsenate compounds is being practised by mining industries. Therefore, the solubility and stability of these solids is of considerable importance to the mining plants that have to keep the environment free from pollutants. There is some information on the solubility of the ferric arsenate compounds, mainly on scorodite, obtained from synthetic solution. However, there is not so much work on ferric arsenate compounds formed at high temperatures (175 - 230°C) during the leaching process. In the present work, the solubility of the ferric arsenate compounds formed during acidic pressure oxidation of arsenopyrite is presented. The results of the solubility tests showed that the ferric arsenate compounds formed at high temperatures (200 - 230°C) and high pressures (1034 - 1551 kPa 0,) released arsenic into solution in amounts less than 1.2 ppm and iron in amounts no higher than 1.0 ppm. So, they seem to be potential compounds for arsenic and iron disposal.

A new method is presented for precracking three-point bending specimens for fracture toughness testing. A notched specimen of rectangular cross section is placed on a flat loading platen, with paper between specimen and platen. The specimen is loaded from above through a roller placed directly over the crack. The thin, high compliance joint between specimen and platen causes a distributed load on the bottom of the specimen. This results in bending at the cracked section and crack initiation at the notch tip. Since the joint is thin, its stiffness increases rapidly with deflection and crack propagation in the specimen generally remains stable and controllable. Fracture toughness KIC in a sandstone directly overlying the No. V coal was measured to be 0.27 MPa m 1/2. Even for cracks 1 cm long this value of KIC results in substantially lower effective tensile strength (modulus of rupture) in roof beams than is expected from intact rock strength.
