Since 1958, the Sifto Salt Division of Domtar, Inc., has operated the Goderich (Ontario) salt mine in Michigan basin bedded halite, with shafts located on Lake Huron's eastern bank. Initial mining utilized a conventional room and pi1lar pattern. However, roof deterioration developed. Incidence of progressive upward failure of saltback and over1yings ha1ey-do1omite layers intensified with entry aging. Studies were therefore initiated on new mining patterns utilizing the Serata Stress Control Method. Pursuant thereto, three test areas, indicated in the mine plan of Fig. 1, were designed and excavated. Full conversion to Stress Control mining was effected in January, 1983. This paper focusses on the instrumentation work in the third test area. Test Area 3 was designed to validate the excavation geometry of the new stress-controlled main entry system. The testing of that design was accomplished, in part, by comprehensive in situ stress, property, and deformation measurements on the performance of the model main entry section of Test Area 3. The paper describes: (1) the theoretical background of the SPDR/Stress Control Method; (2) specific problems and objectives addressed by the 1983 program of in situ measurements, (3) measurement results; and (4) conclusions drawn therefrom.

Staurolite, an iron aluminum silicate mineral, is used industrially as a high value-in-use sandblasting agent, as a premium-grade foundry sand, and as the source of aluminum in portland cement manufacture in areas where the aluminum constituent is not economically available from shale or argillaceous limestone. Staurolite is produced by E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company as a coproduct of titanium mineral production in Florida, where it was first recovered on a commercial scale in 1952 from the Pleistocene sand deposit known as Trail Ridge. At this deposit it comprises about one-fifth of the heavy mineral suite, the principal other heavy minerals being ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, kyanite, sillimanite, and tourmaline. Staurolite and other nonconductive silicate heavy minerals are separated from the conductive titanium minerals on high-tension electrostatic separators. The silicates are then separated from one another magnetically, the staurolite being relatively magnetic. In the total process, 200 t of raw sand yield 7 t of heavy mineral concentrate from which about 1 t of staurolite is recovered. The staurolite concentrates have the characteristics given in Table 1. Staurolite concentrates are sold in three grades having the size distribution of subrounded grains shown in Table 2. All three grades are used in sandblasting for cleaning metal, for paint removal, and for cleaning masonry buildings. Staurolite compares favorably with lower priced abrasives, such as boiler slags and silica sand, in applications where the abrasive is used only once and is not recovered and recycled. Because it is hard, fine, clean, and dense it can reduce blasting time, and less material is required to clean a specific area. Compared to higher priced abrasives such as aluminum oxide and garnet, which are recycled, staurolite costs significantly less per kilogram and cleans at equal or faster rates. Its breakdown factor, which is a measure of recycling performance, is intermediate between those for aluminum oxide and garnet. [ ] [Tables 3 and 4] show the blast cleaning performance of the three staurolite grades compared to other abrasives. [Table 5] compares the longevity of premium priced abrasives during recycling. [Table 6] shows a cost comparison between silica sand and staurolite. Fringe benefits claimed for staurolite's use as an abrasive are: 1. Good flow properties and freedom from the lumps or slivers found in silica sand or boiler slag abrasives. 2. Low dusting affords good visibility, permits faster working, and reduces cleanup problems. 3. Heated storage is not required during freezing conditions, because the mineral is nonhygroscopic.

[Introductory Remarks] Thermoluminescence (TL) detectors are widely used for the dosimetry of X- and[ y]-rays. Also filter devices for radon daughter monitoring have been developed in which the a activity on the filter was measured with TL-detectors (Breslin et al., 1977). For this purpose normal LiF-tablets with a thickness of 0.4 - 1 mm were used. However the lower detection limit of such TLmonitors for radon daughters is relative high, especially in areas with a high [y]-background, due to the low [a /-y]-sensitivity ratio of such thick LiF-detectors. This [a/y]-sensitivity ratio can be increased if TL-detectors are used whose thickness is comparable with the range of [a]-particles. On the basis of this consideration we have developed a simple light weighted and sensitive TL-monitor for the measurement of the cumulative radon daughter exposure in air. [Description of the "Monitor] The monitor consists of two parts: The sampling pump with the accumulator, and the sampling probe which contains the air filter and TL-detector system. Both parts are connected with a plastic tube. For operation in mines a light weight, portable air sampler with a built-in accumulator (DuPont model 125 and 200, 400 g) is used which enables an adjustable, constant flow rate in the range of 7.5 -12 1/h. These air samplers allow a sampling period of 10 hours before recharging is necessary. For radon daughter measurements in houses this pump is replaced by a larger, netoperated pump with a flow rate of 180 1/h. Figure 1 shows a schematic cross section through the sampling probe whose weight is 40 g. The radon daughters are collected on a hydrophob membrane filter (Sartorius) with an effective filter diameter of 11 mm and a pore diameter of 3 µm; its collection efficiency for radon daughters is [>] 95%. Above the filter the detector system is mounted. It consists of two thin Tm-activated CaSO4-TL films of 8 mm diameter on a Al-carrier foil manufactured by Matsushita Inc., Japan. The thickness of the TL-film is 6 mg/cm2, which is comparable with the range of a rays. The first detector is faced in 3.5 mm distance above the filter; in addition to the ambient y background this detector is exposed to the [a] and ß radiation from the radon daughters on the filter. Between the first and the second TL-detector is an Al-absorber of 0.5 mm thickness which shields this detector against the [a] radiation and partly also to the ß radiation from the filter. Both detectors have the same [y] shielding. After air sampling both TL-detectors are read-out with a commercial, hot-air reader (Matsushita Inc. / Japan, Model 505 A). The glow-curves are identical for [a and y] rays (Regulla et al., 1980). The integral TLsignal from both detectors is displayed in mR-units (or mR-equivalent). The difference between the response of the unshielded TL-detector above the filter and the shielded TL-detector is proportional to the time-integral of the filter activity, integrated over the sampling period. Calibration and Intercomparison Measurements] The linearity of the a response was checked with a 241Am-source for an [a] fluence on the detector surface of 5400 [a's/cm2•s] in the range of 102 -105 mR-equivalent. Within the experimental error of 15% the response function is linear. The TLD-monitor was calibrated for radon daughters in air by comparison with a calibrated integrating, monitor (WLM-meter) equipped with a Si-surface barrier detector and a direct electronic read-out; this instrument was developed by us for area monitoring some years ago (Haider et al., 1976). The results of simultaneous measurements with the TL-monitor and the electronic WLM-meter in mine areas and in indoor air of houses are shown in figure 2. On the abscissa the mean potential [a] energy concentration (in WL) during the sampling period is given which was derived from the measurements with the electronic WLM-meter. On the ordinate the corresponding response of the TLDmonitor to radon daughters (difference between both TL-detectors) is displayed, expressed in terms of mRequivalent per liter sampled air. It follows from this comparison a linear relationship over the whole range of 0.005 - 5 WL with a standard deviation of 10%. The resulting calibration factor for the TLD-monitor is 18± 2 mRequiv per WL • 1.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else's problem -- today, it is everybody's problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

The Northern Reese River Valley is in west-central Lander County approximately 31 miles north of Austin, Nevada in the north-central Basin and Range Province (Figure 1). Authigenic zeolites, which were previously undescribed in the literature, are voluminous in this small sedimentary basin. Uranium mineralization is also abundant in this study area. Until now, what we believe to be cause and effect have not been put together. X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy reveal clinoptilolite, erionite, analcime, and minor chabazite to be present (Figures 2, 3). Assays show uranium to be present in thicknesses up to 0.7 meters at amounts up to 0.10% eU308. The sediments in the Northern Reese River Valley belong to the Mio-Pliocene Humboldt Formation equivalents. This formation consists largely of tuffacious lacustrine and fluviatile sedimentary rocks. Mudstone is the dominant lithology and intercalated thin zeolite strata (usually less than 0.6 meter thick) are present. Zeolites in the Northern Reese River Valley were diagenetically derived from rhyolitic glass deposited in a shallow, saline-alkaline lake under arid to semi-arid conditions. Clinoptilolite from the study area was K-Ar dated at approximately 4.7 + 0.5 million years which corresponds to Middle Pliocene age (Krueger and Basinski, in press). This age is further substantiated by Middle Pliocene mammalian fauna collected in the vicinity by Deffeyes (1).

INTRODUCTION The facility water balance and maintenance of sufficient excess storage volume in the solution control system are often amongst the most critical facets of design and operation of heap leach facilities in cold, snowy climates. The purpose of this paper is to summarize and discuss climatic and operational factors which have a significant impact on heap leach water balance evaluations in high snowfall climates. Example water balance simulations are presented for proposed heap leach projects located in areas subject to high snowfall in the northwestern United States. The climatic data input to these simulations represent both net evaporative and net precipitation climates. FACTORS AFFECTING WATER BALANCE EVALUATIONS The combined effects of seasonal operations, re1atively low evaporative losses, and potentially large inflows to the solution control system from snowpack and spring storms require an enhanced awareness of the factors which impact facility water balance. Unlike operations at mines in more arid climates, seasonal excess water rather than a shortage of make-up water is the rule. A thorough understanding of a number of factors, including regulatory constraints, climatic influences, and impact of operating philosophy and techniques, is critical to successful development of an incident-free heap leach operation under high snowfall climatic conditions. A process water circuit schematic for a typical heap leach operation is shown on Figure 1.

"Refuge alternatives (RA) provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. RA manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and the management of heat that results from the RA occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide generation that is representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current US coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in an RA. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 115 W to 135 W, depending on RA occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 LO2/h/person (0.81 ft3/h/person) and 20 LCO2/h/person (0.71 ft3/h/person), which means the margin of safety is 50% or more when compared to the MSHA requirements. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their RAs meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for the supply of oxygen, the removal of carbon dioxide, and the management of heat that results from the occupants and the mechanical/chemical systems in the RA [1]. These MSHA requirements were based on a standard 70 kg (168 lb) male with an assumed allocation of activity of 80% rest and 20% moderate activity level [2]. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the metabolic heat generation and oxygen and carbon dioxide requirements of miners in an RA based on actual miner size and more realistic RA activity levels based on current RA designs. The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and heat generation. To achieve this, researchers took the following steps to estimate the metabolic demands and the associated heat generation, oxygen requirements, and carbon dioxide production. 1. Characterized the anthropometric characteristics of the miner population. 2. Described the metabolic rate profile of RA occupants. 3. Characterized the maintenance demands of RAs. 4. Summarized oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal volumes. ANTHROPOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS OF MINERS The weight, height, and age distributions of the adult male populations are summarized in Table 1. For each data set, the reported mean and standard deviation are provided. The 95th percentile (%ile) value for height and weight for each population was the mean plus 1.64 times the standard deviation."

Trona, Na3(CO3)(HCO3) ? 2H20, is mined in quantity from saline facies of the Eocene Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The Green River deposits are the world's largest known resource of natural sodium carbonates. An estimated 127 billion tons of trona ore are known to occur in beds exceeding 4 ft in thickness (Wiig and others, 1995). Twenty-five trona beds, exceeding 3 ft in thickness, and covering at least 100 mil have been identified. The beds are numbered sequentially in ascending stratigraphic order. Trona beds underlie more than 850 mil (bed 17) and are up to 37 ft thick (bed 1) (Culbertson, 1966). Five underground mines, operating in beds 17, 19, 20, 24, and 25, process trona to produce soda ash (sodium carbonate). A total of 11,837,703 short tons of soda ash were produced from 17.1 million tons of trona ore in 1997 (Kostick and Clark, 1998). A detailed study of trona bed 17, using techniques of petrography and X-ray diffraction, has been undertaken in the Solvay trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. A continuous, vertical-channel sample was taken from near the production shaft for this study. At this location, bed 17 is 12.6 ft thick and includes several stratigraphic markers that are easily correlated throughout the mine and in surrounding drill cores. Bed 17 in this area averages 90% trona through its entire thickness (Wiig and others, 1995) and 95-100% trona in the lower two-thirds of the bed. Mineral impurities include water-insoluble dolomite, quartz, pyrite, clays, and other minerals and partially water-soluble northupite and shortite. Northupite, Na3Mg(CO3)2C1, contributes to chloride contamination in the soda-ash product and is concentrated in the upper one-third of bed 17, which is left behind as roof rock. Northupite has two modes of occurrence: (1) as bedded strata with dolomite, chert, clay, and shortite and (2) between primary trona crystals in trona spar. Petrographic and mineralogic data indicate that this section of bed 17 was deposited subaqueously during its early and late history and may have undergone periods of deposition in a subaerial or marshy environment. Stratigraphic data indicate that trona accumulated at an annual rate of 2-4 in. per year. During trona deposition, dolomite, CaMg(C03)2, precipitated in parting layers when new water entered the lake, freshening supplies of calcium and magnesium. The lack of clay minerals in the trona facies suggests water input may be by means of springs, as opposed to overland flow. Clay occurrences in thicker dolomitic partings within the trona facies indicate periods of episodic overland flow, possibly resulting from storms in the surrounding basin.

Different mixtures of the three polymorphs of silica viz. quartz, cristobalite and tridymite are analyzed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and their IR spectra are investigated by photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is observed that XRD provides a higher resolution to distinguish between the three polymorphs in a sample than IR spectroscopy. In the latter, a sharp band near 617 cm-1 is characteristic of both cristobalite and tridymite. A mine dust sample is quantitatively analyzed by XRD and it is shown to contain illite, quartz, kaolinite and calcite.

Bureau of Mines research has addressed improved operator protection for thin-seam shuttle cars. Because of working height restrictions in thin-seam mines (1.22 m or 48 in), MSHA regulations require that-canopy protection on shuttle cars be provided only in mines 1.07 m (42 in) and greater; however, variances are given to mines 1.22 m (48 in) and below. This paper reviews past Bureau efforts to develop protective structures for thin-seam shuttle car operators. The paper also discusses recent research leading to a novel method of protecting shuttle car operators, in mines as low as 1.02 m (40 in), through the use of a cross-car, end-mounted operator compartment.

Introduction Samarco Mineracao S.A. is a Brazilian corporation jointly owned by S.A. Mineracao da Trindade (SAMITRI) and Utah International Inc., with 51% and 49% interests respectively. Headquartered in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Samarco owns and operates an open-pit mine capable of producing 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy) of iron ore; a concentrator rated at 7 Mt (7.7 million st); a 12-Mt (13.2-million st) capacity pipeline transportation system; a 7 Mt (7.7 million st) filtering and pelletizing plant; and a harbor facility. The mine, concentrator, and initial pipeline pump station are located at Germano, near the town of Mariana, about 300 km (186 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro by air. The pipeline terminal, pellet plant, and harbor are at Point Ubu, 70 km (43 mi) south of Vitória the capital city of Espirito Santo State, and about 300 km (186 mi) by air east of the mine. The 396-km (246-mi) pipeline uses 508-mm (20-in.) pipe except for a 53-km (33-mi) section where 457-mm (18-in.) pipe is used to absorb and control slack flow through increased velocity in one of the areas along the route. Iron Ore Slurry The hematite iron ore concentrate produced at the Germano plant is processed by grinding the average 53% run-of-mine itabirite iron ore to -150 µm (100 mesh) for gangue liberation. It is treated further by cyclones to remove the 10 µm (1250 mesh) slimes to prepare the ore for flotation. During the multistage cationic flotation operation, the silica is reduced to make low silica (-0.9%) concentrate for the direct reduction (DR) iron-making process or to make normal silica (-3.5% +2.5%) concentrate for the blast furnace (BF) iron-making process. The concentrate then is reground further to meet the particle size requirements for pelletizing. The reground hematite concentrate is screened in closed circuit with the regrind mills for close control of the maximum particle size, not to exceed 3.5% +75 µm (200 mesh) for pipeline wear protection. Thickened concentrates at 70% solids are pumped to four 5-kt (5,510-st)(dry) agitated slurry storage tanks that hold the feed before it goes to the first pipeline system pumping station. Pipeline Capacity The pipeline system was designed to transport 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) at 65% solids with an average minimum safe operating velocity of 1.5 m/s (5 fps). The pipeline will transport 5 Mt (5.5 million st) in 1982. The system, therefore, is moving the slurry in 13-kt (14,330-st) batches, dispatched at intervals to move 20 kt/d (22,050 stpd). In operation, the pipeline has exceeded its 93% availability design factor. Pipeline Facilities Pump station No. 1 is located at the Germano minesite 1 km (3,330 ft) above sea level. It has the following principal equipment: • four 5 kt (5,510-st) (dry) agitate slurry storage tanks; • two centrifugal charge pumps (one stand-by); • a 217-m (712-ft) safety loop; • seven mainline positive displacement triplex plunger pumps (189 m3/h, or 832 gpm, at 14.9 MPa, or 2,162 psi, maximum output pressure); • four corrosion-erosion spools; • a control and command center. A great deal of effort has been put forth in recent years to arrive at accurate projections of the demands for tunnels in this decade. In reviewing the statistics presented by various study groups, it appears that during the decade from 1960-69, there were some 1,335 miles of rock and soft ground construction tunnels excavated throughout the world. These statistics indicate 645 miles of rock tunnel and 689 miles of soft ground tunnel were excavated during the last decade. This is expected to increase to 3,000 miles in the 1970's according to projections made by various authorities in the field of construction tunneling. I point out the above statistics to emphasize two main points: (1) The demands for tunneling in this decade alone are staggering. (2) There is a fairly even distribution in the amount of rock tunneling and soft ground tunneling being excavated. Unfortunately, available statistics do not answer many important questions about tunneling which are of great importance to the contractor and to boring machine designers. For example, how many of the projects completed in the past decade involved both soft ground and rock tunneling? How many projects involved tunneling in conditions where both rock and soft ground were contacted at the same face. While the answers to these questions remain unanswered, I am sure most of you can think of numerous examples of projects where mixed face conditions are prevalent. Many of you are probably familiar with the Austin Crosstown Interceptor which was bid last month in Austin, Texas. Here is a project involving 57,000 feet of tunnel where limestones and clay shales are expected to be traversed. Another project, the Tonner Tunnels No. 1 and No. 2, near Los Angeles, involve some 22,000 feet of tunnel where mixed soil and rock conditions are expected. This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comminution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville's 5.5x6.4-m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790:1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.

ABSTRACT Distinct patterns are identified in the associations, distributions, and levels of concentration of the silica minerals, boehmite, aluminous goethite, and phosphate minerals in the bauxite deposits of Jamaica. These result from syngenetic and diagenetic reactions associated with post-bauxitization tectonic and associated activities. Three basic types of bauxite are identified, viz., Jamaica-1 (< 3.0% boehmite), Jamaica-2 (> 3.0% boehmite and 30-80% of the iron as aluminous goethites), and Jamaica-3 (> 3.0% boehmite and > 90% of the iron as aluminous goethites). The Jamaica-1 type has a mean value of < 2% boehmite as A1203, while this level in the Jamaica-2 type is usually about 3.5%, and > 4% in the Jamaica-3 type. Similar discrete associations were found for the species and concentrations of aluminous goethite and phosphate minerals. The process and geological implications of these are discussed.

Diesel engines are used in underground mining 1 throughout the world. Exhaust gases from those engines contain toxic components. To protect quality in underground mines, diesel emission control was introduced decades ago, many years before the first surface applications. Today, emission controls, such as catalytic converters, are standard on underground diesel engines in countries concerned with occupational safety and health. Nett Technologies manufactures a range of diesel emission-control devices for underground mining. Emission problems are not the same at each mining operation. And there is no universal control technology. The selection of exhaust aftertreatment technology depends on raw exhaust emissions, particular emission problems, fuel quality and economics. Some of the technologies that have been used in underground mining to control diesel emissions include catalytic converters, diesel filters, fume diluters and water scrubbers. Table 1 compares the effectiveness of these technologies to control the particular components or aspects of diesel emissions.

In the wake of the Crandall Canyon mine disaster, the U.S. Congress asked the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) to study the safety of deep cover pillar recovery operations in the US. The legislation defined ?deep cover? to be greater than 1,500 ft, but NIOSH is also evaluating mines at depths greater than 1,000 ft when multiple seam interactions are encountered. By these definitions, there about 35 active mines that engage in deep cover pillar recovery, in the states of UT, CO, VA, WV, and KY. To date, NIOSH has documented ground conditions and ground control experience at nearly all of them. This paper provides an overview of current deep cover pillar recovery practice. "Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

Overshot loaders are loading machines which fill a front-mounted bucket by crowding and bucket lifting, passing the loaded bucket over the machine and throw¬ing the load into a haulage unit to the rear. The load is retained in the bucket as the load mass is accelerated in its path over the machine. At the point of discharge, the bucket is stopped suddenly and the load leaves the bucket, following the throw trajectory past the rear of the loader. Fig. 1 shows a typical overshot loader of this type. Overshot loaders were developed for loading in nar¬row drift headings and drawpoints, where it is impossible to place or pass a haulage unit alongside the loader. Haulage access is to the rear of all overshot loaders. The first overshot loader was developed in the early 1930s. The early machines were rail-mounted, air¬powered, and had small loading capacities. To this day, the same basic design configuration exists, and all suc¬cessful overshot loaders still use compressed air. Bucket sizes range from 0.14 to 0.59 m3 (5 to 21 cu ft). The most commonly used machines are rail-mounted, al¬though crawler versions are popular for special applica¬tions, particularly shaft sinking. Rubber-tired machines have found some application where a greater travel distance is required between the loading and discharge points. CONDITIONS INFLUENCING APPLICATION Roadway Type Rail-mounted loaders are used where soft bottom requires rail support or where the long haul is ac¬complished with rail. This situation usually occurs in civil tunnels or in mine drifts that will continue to utilize rail-bound main haulage after development work is completed. Crawler and rubber-tire mounted loaders are used where the roadway surface is rough and lateral travel beyond the range of rail-bound machines is required. Work Area Dimensions The largest rail-bound loaders can clean roadways as wide as 4 m (13 ft) from a single track. Wider headings require multiple trackage. Headroom require¬ments are dependent upon the path described by the bucket as it passes over the machine. The largest over¬shot loader requires approximately 3.4 m (11 ft) of headroom. It follows that the largest heading that can be driven by overshot loaders from a single set of rails is approximately 4 m (13 ft) wide and a minimum of 3.5 m (11.5 ft) high above the rail. The smallest rail-bound loaders can work efficiently in headings as small as 1.8 m (6 ft) wide by 1.8 m (6 ft) high above the rail.

MDL Rock Lasers has undertaken successful mapping trials of abandoned mine workings using its underground cavity scanning system. The work was being performed for Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), Australia&apos;s largest gold producer. MDL Rock Lasers supplies underground surveying systems to the mining and quarrying industry KCGM&apos;s Fimiston Super Pit, located in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, is Australia&apos;s largest open-pit gold operation. Fimiston&apos;s final pit design is expected to be 3.7 km (2.3 miles) long, 1.5 km (0.9-miles ) wide and 540 m (1,770 ft) deep. During the early days of Australian mining, underground operations were labor intensive. Mining was selective and generally narrow stopes were mostly backfilled. Improved processing technology and mine mechanization during the 1970s and 1980s has permitted larger scale operations to adopt less selective underground-stope operations. The "super pit" concept was a logical step for mining companies working toward economies of scale. However, the industry recognized that there was no precedent for excavating a 500-m- (1,640-ft-) deep open pit through ground previously affected by old workings. To appreciate the geotechnical challenge facing KCGM, it is necessary to consider that under the pro¬posed area at the open pit, stoping reached a level of 1 km (0.6 miles) and was supported by more than 2,000 km (1,240 miles) of development headings. The company was fortunate because plans were available for the Golden Mile underground operations. The existing plans were interpreted by the mine&apos;s geotechnical team and computer models were constructed of the underground workings. These models can be imported into three-dimensional mine planning packages, such as the Vulcan&apos;s Unix-based software, Envisage, to assist analysis and design. This prior knowledge of the workings provided the focus for investigating and confirming ground conditions using probe drilling. After several iterations of drilling, followed by detailed analysis, several decisions were made relating to the nature of the ground and the mining approach to be taken. It was recognized that the stope models were not perfect due to hu¬man error, lack of original survey information and progressive deterioration in ground conditions. It also became apparent that the sole reliance on probe drilling was inefficient in terms of time and quality of information. This was particularly true in complex areas where stopes are in close proximity. A major concern was the presence of open stopes (voids). In many cases, stopes consist of combinations of filled and void sections. The condition of pillars within these underground workings is extremely important. In time, pillars collapse and voids will propagate in upward and lateral directions. So systems needed to be developed that allowed rapid and accurate verification of ground conditions. KCGM was introduced to MDL Rock Lasers while investigating technology for underground mining. The two companies decided to use the C-ALS, MDL Rock Laser&apos;s underground laser, cavity scanning system, to improve the management of mining through affected ground. This system was to be used in conjunction with probe drilling and void mapping activities. A field test in one area of the Fimiston Mine verified the capability of the C-ALS system to quickly and efficiently assist in this decision making process. The C-ALS scanner features lightweight, carbon fi¬ber alignment rods from Measurement Devices Ltd.&apos;s (MDL) Boretrak MKII. This is a borehole deviation system that stops the two axis measurement head rotating and lowers the system down a borehole. The scanner is deployed by a 110-mm (4.3-in.) borehole, up, down or sideways. The operator can then carry out vertical and horizontal plan section scans at any user specified ARC (an angular increment of 2°) or the distance between two points on the ARC (CHORD) increments. Windows &apos;95 software enables the operator to control the cavity scanner remotely, surveying the area in real time. The system makes data quick and convenient.
