The Mission Mine is an open-pit copper mine located 18 miles south of Tucson, Arizona in the eastern foothills of the Sierrita Mountains. Mining is done on 40 foot benches using P & H 2100 shovels and 170-ton Terex trucks. Drilling is accomplished With two (2) Bucyrus-Erie 45R?s, one (1) Bucyrus-Erie 60R and two (2) Ingersoll Rand T-5?s. For secondary drilling. a Joy VCR-ISO truck mounted drill is used. The mine is currently operating 3 shifts/day, 7 days/week at 59,100 tons per day, with the mill receiving 28,500 tons per day. The management of the drilling and blasting program requires extensive record keeping in all phases of the operation. This is essential in order to evaluate different products and procedures.

For tunnels with low overburden, the shotcrete lining is the main element of ground support, which is why shotcrete behavior is of prime importance. Following its application, shotcrete not only gains strength and stiffness with time but—if loaded at an early stage—it is also subject to creep which in turn leads to stress relaxation. For two-dimensional FE calculations, a computational modulus of elasticity of shotcrete is to be used. Based on parameter studies it was found that the modulus of elasticity of shotcrete depends on both shotcrete mix and ground behavior. While the Young’s Modulus used for young shotcrete may range from 1,000 to 7,000 MPa, the Young’s Modulus used for hardened shotcrete is best represented by a value of 15,000 MPa.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Pea Ridge Iron Ore Co., previously Meramec Mining Co., a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp., mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge mine. The Pea Ridge property, now wholly owned by St. Joe, is located near Sullivan, MO, about 112 km (70 miles) southwest of St. Louis. The ore body was delineated in the mid-1950s by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drill¬ing in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the ore body was minable. Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Pro¬duction commenced in April 1964. The ore body is overlain by about 396 m (1300 ft) of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 792 m (2600 ft) long, and up to 182 m (600 ft) thick. It dips about 1.39 rad (80°) and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 45-m (150-ft) intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the ore body on 58-m (190-ft) centers. Banks of stopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modi¬fied shrinkage stoping method (Fig. 1). This was done by undercutting a 12 m (40 ft) wide by 45-m (150-ft) long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 1.5-m (5-ft) intervals. A 20-m (65-ft) sill was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fin¬gers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a "lattice" of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar re¬covery program was necessary (Fig. 2). INITIAL PILLAR RECOVERY PROGRAM The program was started in the upper western por¬tion of the ore body, furthest from the shafts. Due to the fact that the ore body narrows in the western extremity, the stope orientation was changed to mini¬mize required development. This left pillars 18 to 24 m (60 to 80 ft) wide and up to 79 m (260 ft) in length. The area selected for the start of the program had been developed between the uppermost level at 419 m (1375 ft) below surface and the 510-m (1675-ft) level. Due to the 91-m (300-ft) difference in depth, sublevels were driven on 15-m (50-ft) intervals and the ore was taken by rather classical sublevel stoping methods (Fig. 3). This left a structure with accesses compatible with drilling with 114-mm (41/2-in.) bore drifters mounted on columns. Most holes were drilled 63.5 mm (21h in.) diam and reamed to 100 or 127 mm (4 or 5 in.). Practical depth capability was about 21 m (70 ft) for holes above horizontal and 13 to 15 m (45 to 50 ft) for holes below horizontal. The interdependence of these long pillars necessitated that several of them be blasted simultaneously, making large blasts the only practical approach. Due to the required length of such loading cam¬paigns, it was necessary to select an explosive which could stand in the hole in an underground mine for a 4 to 6 week period. After some consideration a pump¬ able water gel was selected for both uphole and down¬hole loading. This afforded a high velocity, high density explosive which could be handled in large quantities. Loading the downholes was a fairly straightforward process. The holes were lined with an 8 mil polybutylene plastic sleeve and water gel was pumped into them with a double diaphragm pump mounted on the bottom of a stainless steel tub with a 81-kg (180-1b) capacity. Introduction The cleaning of coal to remove sulfur and inorganic impurities has, in recent years, become an essential operation in any coal utilization process. US coals, on average, contain about 3% total sulfur, of which more than 60% is generally inorganic or pyritic sulfur. Existing technologies such as heavy media cycloning, selective agglomeration, and electrostatic separation have the potential for removing about 80% of the pyrite from coal (Khoury, 1981). In view of the large volumes of coal being used today, there exists a need for the development of new processes to further improve the separation of pyrite from coal. Colloidal particles in suspension possess surface charges that are related to the chemical composition of the particles. In aqueous suspensions, the surface charge is a function of pH. For coal-pyrite mixtures, it is possible, by an adjustment of the pH (also a function of polar molecules), to reach a state where the charge on coal is very close to zero, but the charge on pyrite is still substantial. The introduction of collector particles with a charge opposite that of the pyrite should then result in the selective flocculation of pyrite and collec¬tor. These flocculates should settle out much faster than coal and could be removed from the bottom of the settling column. This note discusses our preliminary observations of the effect of clay-based collector particles, especially bentonite, on the settling behavior of coal and pyrite. These experiments were conducted with a view to developing a new electrokinetic flocculation process for separation of coal-pyrite mixtures. Experimental The objective of the experiments was to determine the effects of clay-based additives on the settling rates of clean coal, pyrite, and coal-pyrite mixtures. Illinois Colchester (No. 2) coal was obtained after processing in an existing coal cleaning facility. This coal was reported to contain less than 0.3% pyritic sulfur, which was in the form of a fine powder with an average particle size of 5µm. Pyrite (of average particle size 5 µm) was also obtained from the same facility and reportedly contained less than 0.1% coal. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite in water were measured as a function of pH using a zetameter. The pH was adjusted by adding sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid to the suspensions. Sedimentation experiments were conducted in 50-mL glass cylinders, and settling rates were measured by noting the height of clear liquid above the settling front as a function of time. Settling behavior was also charted by periodically taking photographs of the system. The following systems were investigated: •a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of clean Illinois Colchester coal in 50 mL of water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite (Fisher, purified grade) ; • a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite ; and • a slurry consisting of a mixture of 1.25 g clean coal and 1.25 g pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite. In addition, experiments were conducted with kaolinite (Bath, South Carolina) and alumina (Fisher, purified grade) as collector materials to verify the observed effects. Results and discussion Figure 1 shows the zeta potential values for the Illinois coal and pyrite as a function of pH. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite decrease with increasing pH, changing from an initially positive value at low pH to a negative value at high pH. The point of zero charge (PZC) for the coal is at a pH of 6.2, while the PZC for pyrite occurs at a pH of 10.3.

Most coal seams in the United Kingdom contain firedamp, some of which is released into the ventilating airways as the strata around a working relax. The close sequence of seams in carboniferous strata is usually such that seams in adjacent roof and floor strata are also disturbed and potentially large quantities of firedamp can enter the workings from these sources. Since emission depends on the disturbance rate of the seams, higher coal production rates associated with increased mechanisation in the colliery accentuate the problem. Firedamp concentrations in UK underground workings are subject to statutory regulations1. To enable production to continue uninterrupted and in safety the problem is tackled by ventilation engineers by the provision of adequate ventilation in the airway and by the technique of firedamp drainage. In the UK the latter usually takes the form of cross-measure boreholes in roof strata, and increasingly also in floor strata, drilled from the gateroads, especially from return airways. In this way firedamp emitted from disturbed seams in adjacent strata can be extracted directly to the surface or to some safe position outbye, and the airways of the working district are not contaminated. Despite the use of firedamp drainage, considerable quantities of firedamp enter the ventilation air- stream and the concentration levels may be seen to be related to the coal production activites in the district. Figure 1 shows a typical recording of methane concentration obtained by a BM1 methanometer at a position outbye in a return gate where firedamp drainage was operating. The general rise in level throughout the working week may be seen, together with peaks occurring during production shifts and the gradual decay of emission over the weekend. In view of the fact that ventilation and firedamp drainage contribute a considerable proportion to the operating costs of the colliery, it is essential that the ventilation and firedamp drainage requirements be calculated as accurately as possible at the planning stage of the working. In the past the ventilation engineer has had to rely heavily on experience in neighbouring workings but with the development of mines in previously unworked areas there is clearly a need for a methodical approach to meet the requirements of planning. The work described in this paper represents such an approach and it is hoped that successful development and application of the method of prediction will lead to the widespread adoption of a routine procedure. The current development of a method of prediction of firedamp emission into longwall workings is based on the theoretical treatment of gas emission from coal seams proposed by Airey2 in 1971, which was based on his study of gas emission from broken coal 3 which was published in 1968. In common with other experimental methods of prediction, the method enables a calculation to be made of the total make of gas emitted from all sources of gas in the strata per tonne of mined coal.

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

It does not take sophisticated economic analysis to determine the current status of nickel production and demand (Figure 1). One only needs a quick glance at the balance sheets of the major nickel producers to learn that prices are down and profits are supressed to the point where they are major losses. Operations have been closed, and those remaining in production have reduced output. What Is now of interest Is, when will the nickel market improve and to what degree? The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer these questions. This will be done by the normal method of projecting nickel demand, chosing a production scenario, and analyzing the results.

This paper describes a two-stage reverse flotation method developed at the Mineral Resources Institute (MRII, University of Alabama, for Kerr-McGee Corporation (KMC), to separate the trona (Na2CO3 ? NaHCO3 ? 2H2O) from a saline deposit containing halite, borax, minor salts, and water insoluble materials. In the first stage, trona is depressed with Quebracho, and the insoluble gangue is floated with fatty acid. In the second stage, trona is floated with cresylic acid. The flotation concentrates contained better than 90% trona with insolubles ranging between 1 and 2%. Although the trona recoveries were low, optimization and middlings recycled in a continuous circuit could substantially increase the value.

A PC image-based, on-line coarse particle size analysis system is being developed for the control of crushing and grinding circuits. Initial results had indicated that the system is accurate when tested with irregularly shaped particles which are stationary and do not overlap with each other. Now the system has been successfully tested in the dynamic mode with a moving belt conveyor. On-line size analysis for actual plant operations is discussed and includes: (1) the video system with respect to lighting and data acquisition requirements for a rapidly moving belt and, (2) image sampling, specifically the number of observations needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set.

Jet grouting is a viable supplementary measure for NATM tunneling in special softground conditions. In particular it is used as a type of forepoling to maintain face stability and to provide initial support for large openings until the shotcrete lining reaches sufficient strength. For this purpose cement grout is injected under high pressure through horizontal pipes outside of the tunnel perimeter and thoroughly mixed with the soil producing 1 to 3-foot diameter cylindrical beams. Excavation of the tunnel then proceeds beneath this umbrella of 40 to 50 foot long beams. Design and construction experiences from recent projects are presented for tunnels diameters between 30 and 50 feet in fill and alluvial and colluvial deposits.

Grefco Inc. operates two diatomite mines in the western Santa Ynez Mountains. The larger of the two mines, the Palos Colorados Mine, is located approximately seven miles southeast of Lompoc. The Miguelito Mine is located about two miles south of Lompoc on the west side of the Miguelito Canyon. Diatomite from the Palos Colorados and Miguelito mines is trucked to the Grefco plant at Lompoc for processing (Figure 1). HISTORY Grefco, Inc. evolved from the originating Dicalite Company which in 1929 began operations at the Walteria plant in the Palos Verdes Hills south of Los Angeles. In 1942 Dicalite leased the Palos Colorados mine at Lompoc. In 1944 the Dicalite Company was purchased by Great Lakes Carbon Corporation.

Cost accounting information is used primarily for (1) planning, control, and performance evaluation; and (2) managerial decision-making. Incremental analysis is a tool for managerial decision-making. It is designed to estimate future financial performance, namely the benefits and costs associated with alternative courses of action. Decisions may be distinguished as pertaining to short-term or long-term activities. Long-term activities frequently focus on capacity decisions and the attendant capital budgeting processes used to quantify the financial effects of these decisions. Short-term decisions typically address short-range production quantity and pricing issues, outsourcing, selection of the optimal mix of products, inventory management, and the acceptance of special orders. This chapter addresses these short-term decisions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is currently investigating the electrochemistry of mineral flotation. A significant need in this area is greater reliability of sensors. The USBM is testing electrolytic methods to clean and condition redox-sensing electrodes to improve the reliability and extend the service life of these instruments in the harsh physical and chemical environment of mineral processing slurries. A novel method for removing scale from fouled electrodes has been developed that includes anodic polarization to 1.2 V versus the Ag/AgCl reference potential, followed by brief potentiodynamic conditioning. Laboratory results show that this technique removes calcarious deposits from gold sensing electrodes and returns the electrode to useful service within approximately 10 min. Mechanical abrasion to remove the scale is thereby avoided.

Bolivia is nor a major gold producer but has produced continuously since pre Inca times. Production reached a peak in 1964 of about 4,000,000 grams and is currently about 1,000,000 grams. Production is mainly from the Tipuani River valley north of La Paz and is derived from Pleistocene basin fill: the Cangalli conglomerate and overlying terraces. Abandoned Pleistocene lake terraces south of La Paz in the Oruro area are another source of gold whose potential have not been realized. In both the Tipuani and Oruro areas, primitive hand methods are the principal means of production, with the exception of a single modern dredge. In spite of a long history of production, probably very little of the gold potential has been mined.

Overview In 1992, US coal supply and demand were shaped more by weather conditions and the export market than by the economic recovery. Preliminary data compiled by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) (Table I) show that coal production declined slightly to 902 Mt (994 million st). Consumption, though, rose by about 1 % to 811 Mt (894 million st), trailing the 2.1 %growth in Gross Domestic Product. Contributing to the decrease were a sizable drop in coal exports and some coal stock withdrawals. Consumption increased largely because electric utilities turned to coal to offset a shortfall in hydroelectric generation caused by a drought in the Northwest. Apart from this, the demand for coal-fired generation was dampened by a mild winter in the northwestern and northcentral United States, and a cool summer in the central and eastern parts of the Nation. Coal use by other consumers was about the same as in 1991. The average delivered prices of coal to all consuming sectors decreased slightly in 1992, reflecting soft coal markets (Fig. 1). US coal exporters experienced a set-back in 1992 mostly because of losses in the European market. Total coal exports fell by 6% to 93 Mt (103 million st), the first decline since 1987. Coal stockpiles at the end of 1992 were about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) below 1991, despite stock buildups by some electric utilities in the East. Stocks were built up as a hedge against possible coal miners' strikes after the Feb. 1, 1993, expiration of the contract between the United Mine Workers of America and the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association.

The AirBoss*200 is a unique ambient airflow sensor with important improvements in accuracy, especially in the critical low end, 0-61 m/min (0-200 fpm) where MSHA regulations apply. All solid state, its design is rugged, and there are no moving parts or delicate filaments. An on-board microprocessor calculates air velocity, linearizes and corrects for temperature, while driving voltage and current loop analog outputs to .3 meters/minute (1 ft/min) resolution. Recent developments also cover both positive and negative flow directions. A hand held computer is available to readout data and to adjust stored range selection, alarm set points, calibration data and the speed of response. Installation in hazardous areas is covered by MSHA Classes G, H and L.

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. Performance monitoring, operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in open pit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike open pit has been ongoing since the early 1980’s, with its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls. With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via pre-split blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of inter-ramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted resulting in quantified, rock specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2 degrees on a 300m high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for pre-split drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves. Location The Goldstrike open pit is located on the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada USA (Figure 1). The mine has produced over 43 million ounces (1.2M kg) of gold during the past 30 years. Engineering Geology Stratigraphy Figure 2 is a stratigraphic section of the rocks in the Goldstrike open pit. Quaternary alluvium and Miocene materials typically are poorly indurated stiff soils and are not present in all locations. Bedrock units consist of siltstones, mudstones, sandstones and cherts. From top down the major units exposed in the open pit are the Vinini Formation, the Rodeo Creek Unit, and the Popovich Formation. In general, rock mass strength increases with depth.

Adequate ventilation is a main concern if Lockerby Mine near Sudbury is to be expended. This study investigate a two-fold problem: (1) the new pressure and volume requirements of the main fans due to the theoretical. deepening of the mine, and (2) the effect of the natural ventilation pressure on the main fans. Field data was analyzed with the aid of a newly developed network simulation program, VNETPC Version 3. 0. The density change throughout the mine is accounted for by performing all computations at reference density. Results of the investigation indicate that the existing fan system must be supported by three to five additional underground fans as well, the density effect is significant. If neglected, it will greatly alter the simulation results
