INTRODUCTION The effect of stress concentration in coal seams leads to a sudden release in the form of rock bursts. This effect is controlled along many lines, but the most efficient methods consist in preventing the accumulation of energy in the seam or in the roof. The over- burden weight resulting from mining is the main cause of excessive stresses in a seam. An additional weighting of roof takes place due to formation of abutment loads. The accumulation of energy in the roof takes place where thick sandstone beds occur in overburden strata. An essential problem is to watch, with appropriate measurements, the stress of coal and roof rocks, and to conclude, on this basis, the degree of rock burst hazard. The methods for determining the stresses in a coal seam are quite well developed at present. Let me mention here the seismoacoustic methods, or borehole overcoring measurement methods. On the other hand, an examination of the state of stress in the roof rocks is almost impossible at the actual stage of development of the measuring technique. Hence, the model of stresses in roof was analyzed and determined theoretically. Based on this model, a technology for roof fracturing was developed which aims at destressing rock masses in a planned way. The essentials of the fracturing method consist of a controlled breaking of sandstone roof beds in order to: - prevent the excessive weight on the pillar - prevent a spontaneous breaking of roof beds at a limiting state followed by sudden energy release. High pressure fluid infusion is used to release buildup of stresses. THEORETICAL AND RESEARCH BASES According to the tests carried out by A. Kidybinski by the method of finite elements, isobars of stresses occurring in the roof over the working face are shown in [Fig. 1]. The results indicate: - the highest values of compressive stresses occur in the roof directly over the seam, at a distance of about 5 m ahead of the working face - at a distance of about 22 m above the seam there is a line of transition of compressive stresses into tensile - within the tested roof area, the highest tensile stresses occur at a vertical distance of 35 m, and at a horizontal distance of 20 m from the line of the working face. Gil (1) determined the pres- sure initiating the fracture of roof rocks by the formula: [ ] On the basis of results of analysis of isobars, and of the initiation of failure stress formula (1), isobars may be designed for a given roof class. Assuming for sandstones the Poisson ratio equal 0.3, a field of failure stresses presented in [Fig. 2] is obtained. In this figure it can be seen in which areas the effects of sandstone breakage may be obtained with the operation of a determined hydraulic pressure. To use formula (I), the knowledge of Rr is still necessary. This value may be determined in two ways: - taking a sample and testing it in the laboratory, if there is access to roof rocks in the existing openings, - drilling boreholes in the roof from surface and examination of the rock mass by using hydraulic breaking, if there is no access to roof rocks.

It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Two Sun Juan Basin studies were completed through the USGS National Coal Availability program. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field (Fruitland Formation) and in the eastern Standing Rock field (Menefee Formation). In the Bisti and Standing Rock areas, the original coal resource5 are estimated at 4.66 and 3.1 7 Gt (5.14 and 3.49 billion st), respectively. The Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Nu- Zin wilderness area, which contains an estimated 1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st) of coal. Technological restrictions remove 32.5% from Standing Rock's original resource. Available resources are 60%. 2.79 Gt (3.07 billion st), of the Bisti original resource and 65%, 2.07 Gt (2.28 billion st), of the original Standing Rock resource.

The past 15 years has .seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers in the mining industry. Sanford (1) has provided a comprehensive listing of available programs by application within the mining industry as a whole. Figure 1 below illustrates some of the primary uses and computer techniques currently in application in surface coal mines. As shown in Figure 1, computers have been applied to virtually every facet of surface mine development and operation. In particular, many programs presently exist to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the, planning and design phase of a surface mine. Close examination of the approach taken to utilize existing programs, however, reveals that in most instances applications have been implemented piecemeal with the result that users must be fairly sophisticated in their knowledge of computer applications.

Introduction Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, numerous developments have taken place in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991). Mesh selection methods A procedure for mine ventilation network solution based on mesh equations typically consists of two steps: • the mesh selection step and • the network solution step. The mesh selection step establishes a set of independent equations to solve the network. The resulting equations are nonlinear. One method of solving nonlinear equations is to linearize the equations and iteratively solve these linear equations. The four analysis methods previously discussed in this paper use this approach. The linear equations required for solution can be written in matrix form as: P•dQ = dF (1) where P is the pseudo-resistance matrix, Q is the quantity matrix, and F is the Jacobian matrix (Kim and Mutmansky, 1991). The efficiency of the solution method depends on the characteristics of the P matrix, which in turn depend on the method of selecting meshes. To understand the impacts of the mesh selection methods on the efficiency of the ventilation network analysis procedures, the characteristics of the P matrix must be understood first. The diagonal elements of the P matrix, m in number, are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches contained in the m meshes necessary for solution. The off-diagonal elements are the sums of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two meshes. For example, P12 (first row, second column element of the P matrix) is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches common to mesh 1 and mesh 2. When solving the system of equations expressed in Eq. (1), three of the iterative procedures (the Newton-Raphson, the linear theory and the second-order approximation methods) use the direct factorization method (Burden and Faires, 1985) on the P matrix. When the direct factorization method is used, the computational efficiency is enhanced by larger diagonal elements and a sparser P matrix. Generally, the sparsity of the P matrix is more important than the size of the diagonal elements. There is no known mathematical method of predicting the efficiency of these procedures, but heuristic methods can be used to study the efficiency. The Hardy Cross algorithm applies the Gauss-Seidel method of splitting the P matrix and applies the Newton-Raphson procedure. The efficiency of the Hardy Cross method depends on the spectral radius of the matrix[[D-L]-1U], where D is the diagonal, L is the lower triangle and U is the upper triangle of the P matrix for the Newton-Raphson method (Ortega, 1972). The smaller the value of the spectral radius, the faster the convergence. As with the other three methods, larger diagonal elements and a sparser matrix aid in faster convergence. With the Hardy Cross method, however, the size of the diagonal elements is more important than the sparsity of the matrix. Remembering that each of the diagonal elements of the P matrix is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches in a mesh and that each off-diagonal element is the sum of the pseudo-resistances of the branches shared by two different meshes, the following strategies can be used: • Avoid having branches with larger resistance values shared by multiple meshes. This increases the size of the diagonal elements and reduces the chance of off-diagonal elements being large.

The heap leaching process has developed into a low-cost method for recovering copper, gold and silver from large and small deposits of low-grade ore. The earliest known heap leaching process with chemicals occurred in about 1752 and is attributed to Spanish miners percolating acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto (Ran Zyl, et al., 1988). In 1969, US Bureau of Mines research¬ers proposed the use of dilute alkaline cyanide solutions as a low-cost means for recovering gold values from low-grade ore containing micrometer-sized particles of gold (Miners News, 1991). The modern-day heap leaching process typically involves the percolation of leach solutions through controlled lifts of stacked, low-grade ore (crushed, aggomerated or run-of-mine) in a heap for chemical extraction of precious and base metals into solution (Fig. 1). The enriched (pregnant) solution is collected by gravity flow in lined basins, sumps and ponds for processing and recovery of the target metals (copper, gold and silver). The barren solution from the recovery facilities is recirculated to the heap, along with chemical reagents and makeup water, for containment of all process solutions in an enclosed and environmentally sound system. This involves the use of low-permeability liner systems beneath the heap leach stacks to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying ground water (Fig. 1). This article discusses the typical heap leach liner systems currently used by mining companies in North America. The most successful heap leach pad liner systems from past precious metal operations generally include an underlying, low-permeability soil bedding material; a geomembrane liner, and an overlying protective cover fill.

Lamproite occurs in two locations in southeastern Kansas that are in close proximity to each other. In both locations, the lamproite is restricted to north- east-elongated, ellipsoidal depressions measuring about 3 mi by 1.5 mi. At the surface and in the shallow subsurface, lamproite occurs as sills that were intruded into Middle and Upper Pennsylvanian rocks consisting of shale, limestone, and minor sandstone. Isotopic age determinations by Zartman and others (1967) indicate that the lamproite was intruded during the Late Cretaceous (88-91 my). Drillholes for hydrocarbon exploration down to a depth of about 1,400 ft (top of the Mississippian) and numerous shallow drillholes (mostly 200-300 ft) by the Kansas Geological Survey in the northern portion of Silver City dome helped to understand the structural complexity and extent of the near-surface sills. Numerous radial faults showing small apparent vertical offsets limit the lateral continuation of individual sills. Concentric faults are believed to mark the edge of the depression. Wagner (1954) mapped the geology of Silver City dome in considerable detail and recognized a northward dipping, 120-ft-thick, lamproite sill exposed at the surface along the northeastern edge of the dome. The upper 40-50 ft of the sill weathers olive-brown and has a soft, clayey consistency in which only the phlogopite mica is recognizable. The weathered material has been mined by Micro-Lite LLC since 1982 from the exposed sill in an open-pit that measures about half a mile extending in an east- west direction. The bulk of the material, about 98%, is used as an additive in mineral supplements for cattle feed.

Batch leaching of Ohio #1, Ohio #4A and Ohio #5 coals was conducted with the thermophilic. sulfur, oxidizing microorganism: Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. Four different size fractions of each coal, with median sizes of 508, 200, 90, and 49 microns, were subjected for 10 days to leaching in a 5% coal-water slurry at 72°C and a pH of 2. Release rates and extent of sulfate and iron I1 and I11 ions from the coals during the leaching process and distribution of sulfur forms (sulfate, pyritic and organic) in the coal samples before and after treatment were determined. Data indicated that Ohio #1 coal, with an initial sulfur content of 0.6%, showed no significant changes with leaching in total sulfur content or forms of sulfur. The Ohio #4A coal, with initial total sulfur content near 5%, yielded product, for sizes below 200 microns with 90% reduction of pyritic sulfur while the extent of organic sulfur removal varied with coal particle size. Results similar to those for Ohio #4A were observed on the Ohio #5 coal, which had an initial total sulfur content of 3% and a final sulfur content near 1%. The findings were interpreted in terms of basic biological, chemical and physical mechanisms.

An open pit production planning method for stage mining is presented in this paper. The method brings solutions to the four most important parameters in stage mining : 1) the number of stages, 2) the size and geometry of each stage pit, 3) the mining sequence of the benches in the stage pits, and 4) the time of transition from one stage to the next. The method can also simultaneously optimize the ultimate pit, mine life, and production rate in each stage.

Actually pelletizing and sintering, meaning both the formation of pellets and the hardening of them, are closely related to each other and to phenomena of nature. Figure. 1 This many-celled porous structure, frozen as it was at the fusion temperature and was being frothed by fast-moving gases, may be considered a typical piece of sinter. The strides that have been made in recent years in applying Artificial Intelligence to pyrometallurgy, are reviewed. The computer reproduction of the way in which a human being reasons and calls on past experience and stored knowledge when faced with problem will be extremely helpful in pyrometallurgy. It is expected that Artificial Intelligence will be applied in all areas of human endeavor. Areas of pyrometallurgy that are most promising for expansion into A1 in the near future are presented.

On July 1, 1999, most domestic metal mines will have to report releases of toxic chemicals into the environment for the first time as required by SARA Title 313. Some of these reportable releases will appear huge in relation to reports by other industries. The reasons for the potentially large reportable releases, special considerations for mining operations, and strategies for dealing with the reports are described. Data composited from experience with several mining companies is presented in the context of a typical goldmine.

In uranium mines, the median size of the aerosol has been found to be about 0.1 micron or less. Such small aerosols are readily deposited or "plated-out" on dosimeter interior surfaces resulting in the recording of a low dose. The "plate-out" properties of the CEA alpha dosimeter head are described with respect to aerosol properties in controlled experiments in the laboratory. A simple model is derived to estimate the amount of "plate-out" in the CEA head.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) recently developed a rock-mass classification system for evaluating the structural competency of bedded roof strata. The system is called the coal-mine roof rating (CMRR), When compiled with the companion Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet, CMRR data are a useful tool with applications to longwall gate-road pillar design, safety-hazard mapping and artificial roof-support analysis. This paper gives a review of some applications under actual conditions found in current US mining operations.

The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles) northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit is owned by First Miss Gold Inc. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 m (1 400 ft.) to 671 m (2 200 ft.), along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate within the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.

Geologically, this region is occupied by Mesozoids, a folded belt of Triassic and Jurassic sediments and volcanics. Gold mineralization is of Upper Jurassic age. Most of the stream placers formed during the Quaternary. Placer gold was first discovered in 1916. Between 1930 and 1957, mining was carried out by the "Dal'stroi," a Russian death- camp organization. At the mines, "Dal 'stroi" exterminated 5-7 million captives taken from Russia's different colonies, each prisoner extracting 1-2 kg of gold before he died. Since 1966 the mines have been worked mechanically. About 10 mining districts are now active, producing altogether 110-135 tons of gold annually.

Subsurface migration of cyanide is attenuated by naturally occurring geochemical and biogeochemical processes. Geochemical mechanisms which remove or immobilize cyanide and metal-cyanide complexes include precipitation/coprecipitation, sorption, and volatilization. Geochemical properties of soils and geochemical materials that promote the functioning of these mechanisms include the following: 1) acidic soil pH; 2) presence of illite and smectite clays; and 3) presence of iron hydrous-oxides and organic carbon. Naturally occurring soil microorganisms play perhaps a more important role in attenuating cyanide movement than previously realized. Biodegradation of cyanide is a "renewable" process, limited in its effectiveness by the avalibility of oxygen and micronutrlents (usually phosphate) to the microorganisms.

Caterpillar has led the way for sound reduction in off highway trucks (OHT) used for mining. In 2000 Caterpillar introduced the 793CXQ sound reduction OHT (Figure 4) to meet local noise level demands in the Hunter Valley near Sydney, Australia. The sound level of the mining equipment in the Hunter Valley is being reduced to pre-serve the quality of life for the residents of the area. To meet the levels established required a major redesign of the 793C, as a result the sound power level was reduced by 9 dB (A), which is a less than 1/8the original sound level.
