Unsaturated flow and solute transport were studied in three large columns measuring 1.5 m diameter x 2 m height, loaded with up to 3.7 t of oxidised waste rock, which was excavated from the Stratmat pile at Heath Steele Division, Noranda Inc. and contained elevated concentrations of zinc in the pore water. The bottom of each column was partitioned into 37 squares, each of which was drained independently. Following rain simulations at the top of the rock bed, the drainage in each drain port was monitored for volume and physicochemical parameters at pre-determined intervals. This paper describes some of the observations resulting from the experiments. The main conclusion of the study is that unsaturated flows in waste rock are heterogeneous, and flow channelling is ubiquitous. The results imply that the transport of solutes from oxidised waste rock to its toe drainage is subject to various controlling mechanisms, including geochemical equilibrium control and successive pore water dilution control.

Information Technology has addressed those problems unique to senior management in the mineral industry. In general, these problems are those concerned with decision-making. Peter Drucker in his discussion of making effective decisions identifies five phases: (1) define the problem, (2) analyze the problem, (3) develop alternate solutions, (4) decide the best solution, and (5) convert the decision into effective action. The scope of the chapter by Guernsey addresses the first three phases which provide input to the decision-maker. The decisions to be made relate, in most instances, to the economics related to a mineral property or process. Computer models have been designed to generate these economic and financial evaluations. No one model is appropriate to the solution of all management's problems. In this chapter several applications are identified and summarized; a model for the economic evaluation of a mineral property is described in greater detail. The implementation of such models is dependent on the unique needs of management.

A longwall chain pillar is comprised of two distinct zones, a solid elastic core enclosed by an exterior of failed or yielded coal. For the purpose of pillar design, the ability to delineate the extent of pillar yielding and correlate the yielding with the applied pillar load is of fundamental importance. A study was initiated on a longwall section of a West Virginia mine to: (1) delineate the location of the elastic core-yield zone boundary, (2) examine the stress distribution within the pillar, and (3) quantify pillar stability as the longwall face retreated toward an instrumented pillar. A US Bureau of Mines sonic velocity probe was used in conjunction with vibrating wire stress meters to define the elastic core-yield zone boundary and the migration of vertical stress toward the pillar core. The extent of the yield zone as determined by field results is compared with the extent of the failed zone as predicted using a series of equations developed by Wilson.

The Henderson Coarse Ore Conveying System is a three flight belt conveyor system transporting primary crushed molybdenum ore 24 km (15 miles) underneath the North American Continental Divide. One of the conveyors is 16.8 km (55,200fi) in length with 8,200 kW (11,000 HP) of installed power. The overland conveyor contains 11 vertical curves and 9 horizontal curves, some with radii as small as 1,500 m. he system began full operation in December 1999 and is one of the longest and most complicated belt conveyor systems yet constructed. he design of this conveyor system utilized many innovative engineering concepts including low-energy belt covers, low-resistance idlers, torque-controlled tail drives, combined gravity and active winch take-up systems, small radius horizontal curves and belt turnovers. his paper reviews the start-up of the system, discusses the success of the design and addresses the lessons that can be learned from the first 4 years of operation of this unique conveyor system

Three principal activities are involved in planning and developing a surface mine. These are 1) definition of economic and technical feasibility, 2) design, procurement and construction, and 3) mining and reclamation. The last is the only activity which begins in the feasibility study and continues throughout the life of a mine. It is also the activity which depends heavily on use of computers. This paper deals with a method of selecting mining software and dwells on the recent progress, made in this area. Discussed also is the status of computerized equipment management and information systems: a microprocessor based technology applied to dispatch systems, monitoring of equipment health and performance, wireless data transmission to a centralized data processing unit, and mine- wide information and reporting system. Reference has been made to upcoming developments which offer the potential- of transforming the surface mine of the year 2000 into a "manless pit". Canadian achievements in all of these areas have been highlighted at appropriate places in the text.

Cyprus Sierrita produces copper and molybdenum from its Sierrita and Twin Buttes open pit mines south of Tucson, AZ. Both pits were started in the late 1960s and are more than 460 m (1500 ft) deep. Sierrita has used a Caterpillar 992C Remote Controlled Loader since January 1993. The loader was justified to increase safety and profits at Sierrita. It has exceeded all expectations. As of June 1993, the 992C had produced additional profits of more than $1.5 million. Safety and Geotechnical The safety of Cyprus personnel and equipment is always of prime concern. The remote controlled loader removes personnel from the active raveling area. But it requires prudent operation. Experiments conducted with a 75-mm-diem hydroryclone have shown it is possible to obtain an iron ore concentrate containing 60% Fe. 2.65% SiO2, and 4.0% Al2O3 from Barsua iron-ore washing-plant slimes. About 60% of the iron values are recovered from slimes containing approximately 49% Fe, 8.9% A1203 and 11% SiO2. The obtained products can be used in the sinter feed for iron and steel making. The key to achieving process success lies in establishing the correct cut point (d50) of the hydrocyclone through the manipulation of operating and design variables, such as spigot and vortex finder diameter, solids concentration and operating pressure. The cyclone efficiency is represented by the partition curve. The cyclone performance, evaluated mathematically from the reduced efficiency curve, is represented by the equation Y = 100[1 -exp(-axb)], where: •X = did 50, •Y = corrected of efficiency (%) and •a and b are constants.

Several industry trends are putting new demands on surface mining equipment. This is true both on the “hard” side of the equipment business - the research and product development programs, and on the “soft” side - the business processes, human resources and competitive strategies. This article describes seven key industry trends and the impact each is having on surface mining equipment suppliers. 1. Globalization Earth-spanning technologies are shrinking the world into an economic village, causing corporations to think and plan on a global scale. This “globalization” is one of the great buzzwords of the 1990s, meaning precisely whatever the user says it means. In this case, let us take it to mean that political boundaries arc less restrictive than in the past, permitting mining companies new freedom to roam the globe for ore bodies. Evolving out of this are global mining houses that have ownership and management interests in labyrinthian webs of mines spanning the world. There are several impacts on surface mining equipment suppliers.

Shotcrete, a useful support material in underground openings, is a sprayed concrete, and, when used with fast-setting agents, is immediately self-supporting. Although shotcrete has been used extensively for tunnel support, the technique has not been readily accepted by the mining industry because of the lack of essential information on such basic items as material properties and rock interaction. The Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC) of the Bureau of Mines has been active in the field for the past 2 years, including research on fibrous reinforced shotcrete. IIT Research Institute, Chicago, under Bureau of Mines contract, is investigating physical properties of shotcrete as affected by (1) type of process (wet or dry) and (2) fast-set agents and controlle-dset cements. Already the contractor has shown the advantage of a regulated-set cement over normal cement and fast-set additives for the dry process. The regulated-set cements can produce high early strengths with no decrease in ultimate strength.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. From a computational point of view calculating a variogram is a perfectly simple operation. For any particular study, we know which variable is to be studied. We also have a good idea of structural parameters which are likely to be important (the scale of the phenomenon, the probable direction of the anisotropy, etc.). Finally, we know the structure of the data file. So we can specify the parameters to be used to calculate the variogram (the distance classes, the angular classes, etc.). This allows us to decide which variogram program is most appropriate (1, 2 or 3 dimensional data, regularly or irregularly spaced, etc. ) . In general, the basic statistics (mean, variance, correlation? etc.) have been calculated beforehand, and so the distribution of the data is already known. Consequently, the choice of the parameter values fed into the variogram is by no means arbitrary. But it must nevertheless be made before the' variogram is calculated. If the resulting variogram is not satisfactory, the whole sequence of operations has to be repeated. Before going on to see how this can be avoided, it is worthwhile having a brief look at the common causes of "unsatisfactory" variograms.

With the aim of environment protection the program package HOMOGEN is used for realizing the planning and noxious components control in the coal produced. Using the program package PRIPREMA the division in levels and transformation (Hermite polynoms) in the N (0,1) distribution are made. By separated kriging 50 m x 50 m blocks are estimated on the levels and detailed distributions of the estimated component content are obtained. The face - longwall face is built in the blocks estimated in this way, and the direction of mining is determined. Using the stochastic simulation the distribution of the estimated production component (e.g. sulfur) on the face is obtained. Simulating the production of all faces in operation the distribution of the estimated daily mine production component is obtained. The estimated depot component is obtained in the same way. This procedure is used in the short-term planning of the estimated component movement for a given period in advance, and also in the daily production control in the case of changing conditions, e.g. the increased atmospheric pressure. The technology is successfully applied to the Velenje Lignite Mine Slovenia.

Most of the mines in Sweden are metal ore mines in hard rock and none of these mines are classed gassy because there is no methane emission. The risk of methane explosions in Swedish mines is therefore very small. Since the 1960?s, in Swedish mines, there has been a change from electric and pneumatic loaders and transport machines to diesel. Today in almost all Swedish underground mines diesels are used. One of the most common complaint from the underground mine- workers is the exhaust gases from the diesel-vehicles. This is a strong motive for attempts to assure a more comfortable environment. Another motive for a better efficiency of ventilation under ground is the increasing cost of energy for fans and for heating the air during winter. For the largest mine in Sweden, the Kiirunavaara Mine, 36% of the energy for ventilation is used for preheating the air during the seven months when the temperature is below zero. The air quantities used for ventilation are large. In table 1 a comparison of the ratio between yearly produced ore and waste rock and installed fresh 'air capacity is shown. [ ]

Lingering effects of the 1990 oil shock that included overbuilding and corporate and individual financial distress caused the Gross Domestic Product to fall slightly to $5.67 billion (US billion = l09). With 254 million people - 697,000 in mining and petroleum - the US has more than 100 million dwelling units and 190 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing starts fell 15% to one million units. New car production fell 11 % to 5.4 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8% to 3.4 million units. The inflation rate was 3%, while the prime rate of interest was 8.5%. The Producer Price Index (1982 = 100) changed as follows: -fuels and related products and power down 1% to 8l, • metals and metal products down 2% to 120, • chemicals and allied products up 2% to 126, and • non-metallic mineral products up to 2% to 117. Energy Imports of crude and refined petroleum, costing $50 billion, fell 5% to 2.8 billion bbl. Domestic petroleum production rose 1% to 3.6 billion bbl. Petroleum supplied about 39% of US energy, natural gas 24% and coal 22%. The National Energy Strategy was announced in February 1991. Its purpose is to encourage domestic production of fossil fuels and nuclear and renewable energy and to stimulate efficiencies in use. Congress continued to debate the strategy and took no action. Coal production fell 3% to 902 Mt (994 million st). About 60% of that came from surface operations. Seventy-eight percent of the total was used to generate electricity and 3% was coked.

INTRODUCTION The Laurens Street section of the Northwest Line of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System, located along Pennsylvania Avenue between Pitcher Street and North Avenue is situated in material which cannot be definitely categorized as soil or rock. However, in the area of residual soils in which these tunnels were constructed, considerable attention was required to determine the character of the ground so that the designers and the constructors could properly evaluate the behavior of the ground and plan their respective efforts accordingly. The Laurens Street sections structures consist of twin rock tunnels, station structure, traction power substation, vent shafts at both ends of the station, the midline vent shaft, and the twin mixed-face tunnels. This paper concentrates on the mixed-face tunnels which extend from Station 99+67.03 (O.B.) to Station 102+49.00 (O.B.) at the southern end of the section. Since the completion of the design of this project, the Laurens Street section has been renamed the Upton Station. (See Figures 1 and 2). SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATIONS At early stages, three preliminary studies were performed by the General Soils Consultant (Ref. 1, 2, & 3). The purpose of the first study was to ascertain the generalized geological and subsurface conditions which might be encountered in the region. No borings were performed for this study. Current approaches to reclaiming acid generating tailings include permanent water cover or encapsulation with various synthetic liners and/or clay. Although these methods can be effective, some ongoing maintenance will be required in perpetuity to ensure that water levels are adequately maintained or that the integrity of any capping system is protected. The successful creation of wetlands in tailings basins offers the possibility of creating a stable environment for the tailings with minimal maintenance. Acid-generating tailings from a massive zinc sulfide deposit in Winston Lake, Ontario, were placed in small cylindrical tanks to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of creating wetlands and mitigating acid and metal release. Two uncovered controls were established in addition to the five treatments, which were done in duplicate. Each wetland tank was 117 cm in diameter and contained 6 1 cm of tailings. Treatments included 61 cm cover of wetland soil, 61 cm of glacial till, 61 cm of tailings, and two tanks with 71 cm of water. One of the water covers included the aquatic macrophytes: Elodea canadensis, Potamegeton sp., and Ceratophyllum demersum. Cattails (Typha latifolia) were planted in the plots with substrate cover, and the initial water level was set at ten centimeters. The pH within the tailings in the treated tanks generally ranged between 6.0 and 6.5 and zinc concentration ranged from 0.02 to 0.1 mg/L. The drainage from the controls had an average pH of 3.3, and 7,700 mg/L of zinc.

FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.

"In today’s fast paced, globally competitive world, reliability and machine uptime are of the utmost importance to a successful operation. Along with these targets more emphasis is being put on cost reduction and decreasing the environmental impact of the overall system. To achieve these goals, automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been used in many industries for years and are now becoming a common tool in the mining industry as well. These systems are able to provide proper lubrication amounts at the proper times autonomously, helping to keep the machines running smoothly while minimizing the physical support required. Copper mines in the southwest have begun utilizing auto lubrication to avoid mistakes and unplanned shut downs on critical equipment. This paper will describe the engineering behind these products and review case histories where these tools have been successfully utilized in the mining industry. INTRODUCTION In a dirty, dusty, wet environment, where machine uptime is imperative, proper lubrication of bearings is the only way to survive. With the push for cost reduction and mines striving to lower their environmental impact and increase worker safety according to MSHA guidelines, the old lubrication practices have come under scrutiny. It is no longer encouraged or cost effective to have maintenance personal walk from point to point throughout the entire mine pumping a shot of grease into each bearing once per shift. Automatic lubricators and lubrication systems have been on the market for years but recently, as the market focus has changed and technology has developed, the use of these systems has begun to rise in the mining industry. Automatic lubrication systems can be as simple as a single point lubricator lubricating one (1) bearing or a more complex system lubricating numerous bearings. With system design, the automatic lubricator provides a preset amount of grease to a bearing at regular, predetermined intervals. The systems designed to lubricate more than one bearing contain grease pumps of some design and possibly PLC controllers which can be used to remotely adjust and monitor the system. As can be seen in Figure 1, the right amount of lubrication can be achieved much more reliably with automatic lubricators. Depending on application needs, the market now has products to fit almost every wish list. This paper is going to focus on the single point systems that are lower in cost but are still being effective."

"In March 2013, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County began final design of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel project. The new, approximately 7-mile, 18-ft internal diameter tunnel will provide additional capacity and redundancy for the existing 8- and 12-foot diameter tunnels, which were built in 1937 and 1958, respectively. Connections to an existing, active 14-foot arch force main and four existing ocean outfalls ranging from 5- to 10-foot diameter are required. This paper will present geological features for the project, and details of the proposed post-tensioned tunnel liner and associated structures. INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are 23 independent special districts serving approximately 5.3 million residents in Los Angeles County. Seventeen of the districts that furnish sewerage services to the metropolitan Los Angeles area are signatory to a Joint Outfall Agreement that provides for a regional, interconnected system of facilities known as the Joint Outfall System (JOS). The JOS service area is shown in Figure 1. The JOS serves an area that encompasses 73 cities as well as unincorporated territory and parts of the City of Los Angeles. The JOS provides wastewater collection, treatment, reuse, and disposal for residential, commercial, and industrial users, and it includes seven treatment plants, the largest of which is the JWPCP, located in the City of Carson. Currently, secondary treated effluent is conveyed through two 6-mile long parallel tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter, from the JWPCP to a manifold structure located at Royal Palms Beach, near White Point on the Palos Verdes (PV) Peninsula, from which four seafloor outfalls extend offshore. The two main outfalls, 90- and 120-inches in diameter, extend approximately 1.5 miles offshore and discharge at a depth of approximately 200 feet below sea level. The other two outfalls, 60- and 72-inches in diameter, are used for additional capacity during heavy rain events and extend a shorter distance offshore and discharge at shallower depths. A schematic of the existing system with the proposed tunnel and structures is shown in Figure 2, and the proposed 18-ft diameter tunnel alignment is shown in Figure 3. Both existing tunnels and main outfalls are required to be in service at all times."

Minerals Engineering Company (MECO) is a relatively small, promotionally oriented mineral exploration company founded in Colorado in 1948 during the height of the uranium boom. The company has been: 1. in uranium exploration and production 2. a drilling company 3. a manufacturer of Geiger counters 4. a major tungsten producer 5. then dormat for several years and 6. now we are back into exploration on a broad scale. We have been in underground lead and zinc production in the 1970's but we are now involved primarily in "wheeling and dealing" in mineral exploration. The company has had diverse interests in the past and we are presently diversifying to some extent into oil and gas ventures.
