Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is a selective depressant for nickeliferous pyrrhotite during pentlandite flotation. Laboratory flotation tests conducted on ore and process samples showed that pyrrhotite rejection is greatly improved by small additions of DETA; however, the effectiveness of this depressant is most noticeable when the mineral sample is oxidized. LIMS and XPS analyses conducted on flotation products and pyrrhotite specimens showed that the difficulty in pyrrhotite rejection arises from inadvertent activation of the mineral by heavy metal ions, such as Ni2+, cu2+ and Ag+, that are present in the process water. In the presence of DETA, however, the mineral is deactivated under oxidizing conditions. The deactivation mechanism may involve oxidation of the activation products, which are likely in the form of heavy metal sulfides, followed by solubilization by DETA. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite electrodes contacted with DETA showed no trace of the reagent on the surface, substantiating the view that its role is one of complexing agent that enhances the dissolution of activation products under oxidizing conditions. FTIR spectra of pyrrhotite contacted with amyl xanthate solutions showed that both dixanthogen and iron xanthate are formed on the surface, the latter becoming more predominant at higher potentials. In the presence of DETA, however, only a small amount of xanthate is adsorbed on the mineral at potentials (Eh) approximately 200 mV higher than the case without DETA.

"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. During the gold cyanidation process, cyanide can be lost from the leachate by various chemical routes. The products of these cyanide losses include base metal cyanide complexes, thio­cyanate and cyanate. These losses are particularly important when treating pyritic or cupriferous ores since the two most sig­nificant cyanic ides, in order of importance, are sulfides and cop­per bearing minerals (I). Cyanidation of pyritic minerals results in the formation of thiocyanate. The problems caused by cyanide soluble copper minerals are well known to the gold processing industry and have been reviewed by several authors (e.g. 2, 3). An important consider­ation, especially with a number of more recent leaching tech­nologies, is the effect of the CN :Cu mole ratio, R, on the gold leaching kinetics. In order to efficiently leach cupriferous ores, it is important that R is maintained at a level that allows suffi­ciently rapid leaching without excessive use of cyanide. The optimum value for R in a fixed leaching system would appear to lie between 3 and 4. This is based on the early observations that the leaching rate is very slow when R is below 3, with a rapid increase in the leaching rate above 3 (2, 3,4). The leaching rate increases gradually when R is greater than 4 (4). The major Cu(I)-cyanide complex in this range of R values is the [Cu(CN)J]2· species. It has been postulated that leaching occurs due to either uncomplexed cyanide or the fourth ligand in [Cu(CN)4]3·, since the stepwise formation constant for this complex is very small (2, 3). An additional consideration when leaching cupriferous ores is the oxidation of cyanide by Cu(II) minerals, resulting in the formation of cyanate. It has also been reported that both sulfide minerals (5) and activated carbon (6, 7) catalyse the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate. From the above discussion, it is important for the leaching con­ditions to be carefully controlled when treating pyritic and cuprifer­ous ores in order to achieve efficient and economically viable leach­ing. For example, large concentrations of thiocyanate in the leachate would reveal large cyanide losses and thus indicate the need for a pretreatment step to oxidize the sulfides. Alternatively, a low R value would indicate slow leaching kinetics and consequent low gold recoveries, indicating the need for increased cyanide dosage.

One of the major criterion of any mechanised tunnelling operation is to minimize downtime of the tunnelling machine by employing the most efficient muck handling system space and economic factors permit. A tunnelling machine which remains idle during a large percentage of the available shift working time is a luxury no contractor can afford. There are several possible reasons for non-productivity of a tunnelling machine ... the inability of the muck handling system to keep pace with the tunnelling machine on a continuous basis is one major cause. In large diameter tunnels, where several trains or more than one muck hauling unit can operate simultaneously, downtime of the tunnelling machine may be kept to an acceptable level. On small to medium diameter tunnels, 8 feet to 14 feet in diameter, the muck removal support system is normally restricted in capacity, resulting in an excessive tunnelling machine downtime as the tunnel extends from the shaft. There is a need for an efficient, continuous and economical muck removal system for small to medium size tunnels being driven by a hard rock machine. This paper is intended to provide an insite into pneumatic conveying, and explain the Radmark System; its development and utilisation in the tunnelling and mining fields. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) is one of the most serious and persistent pollution problems facing today's mining industry. ARD is formed when pyrite (FeS) is exposed to natural weathering conditions. Pyrite weathering, formally the oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite, leads to the generation of soluble, hydrous iron sulfa-salts and the production of acid in the form of H+. The resulting effluent is water that is characterized by high levels of iron (and any other metal contained in the rock undergoing weathering) as well as high concentrations of sulfate and a low pH (acid). Rocky Mountain Remediation Services, L.L.C., has developed a patents pending Envirobond'™ product, Envirobond™ ARD, to treat acid rock drainage. Treating pyrite with Envirobond™ ARD inhibits the oxidation and hydrolysis of pyrite thus curtailing the pyrite oxidation cycle.

The term phosphate beneficiation often conjures up visions of processing technologies that physically separate the phosphate rock from some impurity and do not result in a change in the chemical nature of the phosphate rock. However, when we consider hydrometallurgical processing as a phos¬phate beneficiation technique we have to include all chemical treatments that convert phosphate rock into a more useful product. With most of the phosphate rock mined being used for fertilizer pro¬duction, the best known and most widely employed hydrometallurgical process is wet process phospho¬ric acid manufacture. In general, all phosphate rocks are so insoluble that there is no physical treat¬ment that will allow the phosphate content to be used by vegetation in a timely manner. However, after chemical treatment, 100% of the phosphate is readily available for vegetation nutrition. If there is a chemical beneficiation process that could be considered the standard method of treat¬ing phosphate rock it would have to be the wet pro¬cess for phosphoric acid production. In this process finely ground phosphate is reacted with sulfuric acid to give phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. The phosphogypsum crystals are removed from the phosphoric acid solution and discarded; the phos¬phoric acid is further processed to give the finished fertilizer product. The primary reason that this pro¬cess was adopted so widely is because the phosphogypsum solid that is formed can be easily separated from the phosphoric acid, thereby removing the calcium portion of the phosphate rock and the sul¬fate portion of the sulfuric acid. Other acids have been used to treat phosphate rock but nitric acid is the only other acid used commercially. Nitric acid gives a mixture of phos¬phoric acid and nitrates that can be further pro¬cessed into N-P fertilizers, but the range of N/P grades that can be produced is limited. Hydrochlo¬ric acid has been used to react with phosphate rock, and it can be used to generate a pure phos¬phoric acid but only after solvent extraction to separate the calcium chloride from the phosphoric acid. And then there is the problem of what to do with the calcium chloride. The acid that has received the most attention as a substitute for sulfuric acid is phosphoric acid. In this process, the phosphoric acid reacts with the phosphate rock to give a mono-calcium phosphate solution. This process does not dissolve all the impurities in the phosphate rock, and these solids can be removed from the solution before sulfuric acid is added to convert the soluble calcium to insoluble phosphogypsum. Despite all the claimed advantages, this process has not found favor. A suc¬cessful application of this process to treat some of the lower grade phosphate rocks being used today would seem to have some distinct advantages. INTRODUCTION The net smelter return (NSR) calculations made on various smelter-refiner alternatives, is usually done by taking the gross metal value less metal deductions, smelter-refiner charges and transportation-insurance costs. An important further step in the calculations is the financial charges imputed by refining time, transportation delays, to the time gold is returned (if tolled) or paid for if bought by the refiner. Metal that is priced in advance of payment also requires a forward premium that the mine may or may not be getting. This is a hidden cost that is often omitted from the calculations. Segmentation of each of the above costs are vital to see where improvements can be made through negotiations, better choice of metal pricing or transportation alternatives. BASIC NSR CALCULATIONS SMELTER-REFINER CHARGES Payable Metals - Treatment Refining Charges: Since these can vary from one smelter to another, the effect of a $25 per ounce price increase/decrease should be calculated and kept in mind. This effect is compared to differences in refining/treatment charge and a total smelter/refiner cost on a cost per ounce of dore, gold, or a dry ton of concentrate. Transportation - Insurance: Research has to be done on transportation alternatives perhaps with some assistance from the smelters, railroads or trucking companies. For dore, the U.S. postal service is viable and inexpensive. For railroads, deal with the regional office ie., B&N El Paso, if production warrants regular bulk shipments. Spot rates tend to be higher. A small mine producing concentrates usually goes to the nearest smelter due to extremely high transportation costs. Here is where a refiner can help. Insurance-Quotes for rates on dore/ concentrates are easily obtainable, but the mine has to shop for the best rates. Your insurance broker is the best source of this information. Differences between Mine and Smelter/Refiners Metal losses can be caused by the following: - Concentrate dry weight differences caused by moisture determination or faulty scales (often at the mine). - Sample bias by poor preparation practices on either side ie., grinding of the sample removing gold; or a poorly mixed concentrate. Dore bullion has no such difficulties.

M.S. Azun The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others (Fig. 2). The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous. Reply by E.Y. Baafi and Y.C. Kim The two key contentions made by M.S. Azun regarding the paper are: deterministic methods should not be compared with statistical methods and, hence, the results are erroneous; and the paper does not make a meaningful contribution. The first contention is an academic one. Most practitioners in ore reserve estimation could care less whether the tool they are using falls under a deterministic or a probabilistic method, so long as it gives the desired answers. It is probably for this reason that, whenever any new tool such as linear kriging is introduced to practioners in the mining industry, they would like to see a comparison test performed between the existing and the more familiar tools with a new and "strange" tool. Only when a new tool passes such a test, the generally conservative mining community would begin to utilize the new tool to its advantage. The second contention, is a subjective one. The final judgment should be left up to the readers within the mining community. If kriging is accepted more among practitioners, partly due to the paper, then the paper makes a practical contribution to the state-of-the art in ore reserve estimation. Finally, M.S. Azun entirely missed two main points in the paper. The first is that any comparative study of kriging vs. Polygonal or IDS should be performed for local estimation and not for global estimation. In the past, kriging was frequently compared with other existing tools in its performance on global estimation. Such results were nearly identical due to the central limit theorem effect, which further prevented the acceptance of kriging by practitioners. The second point is that a single case study using an existing property, as it was frequently performed in the past, is not sufficient because results depend not only on the tool itself, but also on the nature of the mineralization.

The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier's support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn't respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,' why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?' The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, 'What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II) -activated sphalerite exhibits a high floatability so that satisfactory separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by infrared (IR) spectra; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitution and polymerimtion of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

An economic analysis for evaluating coal preparation in Appalachian Region is presented. A complete coal preparation plant is used to deter- mine the capital and operating costs. Using profit maximization as a decision criterion, an optimal process flowsheet for given coal characteristics can be selected among the process alternatives by a process-economic model. A deterministic analysis is used to calculate the discounted cash flow interest rate of return and project the selling prices of clean coal products. A probabilistic evaluation is further made to quantify the risk involved in obtaining the desired profit levels.

Prediction of excavation rates is a critical element in the pre-planning of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) project. A realistic evaluation of performance expectations is needed that reflects both the knowns and unknowns of the excavation process and geologic conditions. Current planning procedures are often based on deterministic “best guess” estimations. In this paper, a probabilistic approach to performance simulation is presented that will permit rational consideration of general and project-specific uncertainties in establishing realistic performance estimates. Companion to the simulation software is a database of over 600 public-domain case histories.

Poor plant start-up performance is usually blamed on poor design and unsatisfactory equipment. But, in most cases, the real cause of poor performance is inadequate preparation for operations and maintenance. Inadequate maintenance preparation, unlike inadequate operations preparation, will not immediately manifest itself in a new plant. However, not taking advantage of the window of opportunity afforded a new plant to organize the maintenance operation ensures that the new equipment honeymoon is unexpectedly short. Also, once a plant has entered a “breakdown mode,” it is extremely difficult to turn around.

Field criteria are needed to help the prospector recognize a potentially expansible shale, clay, or slate. Certain criteria have proven useful in California even though the physical-chemical mechanisms of expansion are not thoroughly understood. Three conditions must be satisfied before expansion can take place, The raw material must partially fuse at a low temperature (1800-2000°F.), Concurrently a gas must form. The raw material must be sufficiently impermeable to trap the gas within the particle. Low temperature melting, which is controlled by bulk chemical composition, is difficult to assess in the field but most common shale, clay, and slate is suitable in this respect, The presence of organic carbon, the most common source of an expanding gas, is indicated by dark color of the rock, A large proportion of clay-sized particles promotes impermeability; fine grain-size is indicated by conchoidal fracture, The shape of the expanded particle is commonly indicated by the texture of the raw material. Rocks with well-developed slatey cleavage produce accordion-shaped particles; massive rocks tend to form rounded particles. Undesirable materials commonly present with expansible shale include: weathered shale; sandstone and other coarse-grained sediments; and limestone, Weathering, which is indicated by color, reduces or eliminates expansion; therefore, surface samples seldom are representative of the shale found at depth. Sandstone does not expand and will increase the average weight of the finished product, Limestone or particles of carbonate minerals can be actively harmful because they are converted to free lime (CaO) during the firing process, If free lime is present in concrete, hydration will cause expansion of the lime particles which result in surficial ?popouts.?

The new Tren Urbano heavy rail transit project in San Juan, Puerto Rico has one very significant part, the Río Piedras Contract, being constructed underground. This paper will give an overview of the tunneling work that started construction in1997. Design-Build procurement for tunneling is addressed. The new and modern transit system in San Juan will be 17.2 km (10.7 mi)long and have 16 stations in its first segment of construction, which is due to open in 2001. The line connects the city center district of Santurce to the outlying suburban municipality of Bayamón. All construction is being done under design-build contracts as a demonstration project funded by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The Río Piedras Contract is completely underground and involves practically all types of construction in soft ground. One station is built as cut-and-cover at the University of Puerto Rico. One portion has twin tunnels to be driven with an Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) and lined with one-pass precast concrete segments. Another has four short tunnel drives at a turnout that will be constructed with an initial support of shotcrete and lattice girders (i.e., the New Austrian Tunneling Method of construction). The most complex construction is the Río Piedras Station, which is being built as a stacked drift with a total of 15 individual tunnel drifts. After being sequentially excavated and concreted, they will form the arch of the 19 m (62 ft.) wide by 16 m (53 ft.) high cavern station. This structure is excavated in soil with less than 5 m (16 ft.) of cover to overlying historic buildings.

Endako Mines' molybdenum operation is located near the geographic center of the province of British Columbia, Canada. The property is six miles south of the Northern Transprovincial Highway and the northern main line of the Canadian National Railway. The area is broken by high hills covered with dense stands of spruce and pine with vast areas of the valley floors covered with aspen and poplar. The climate is moderate with precipitation averaging 22 inches per year. Approximately four feet of snow accumulates in the winter, and temperatures range from 900 F. in summer to -40° F. in winter. The orebody, a lowgrade porphyry type deposit, occurs in a widespread granitic intrusive which has been locally weakened at the intersection of two regional faults. In this vicinity the quartz monzonite has been further shattered to permit the entry of mineralizing solutions and local dykes. Two types of mineralization occur within the orebody. The most prom¬inent is the six inch to four foot wide continuous quartz veins with characteristic ribbons of molybdenite and frequently finely-divided grains of molybdenite within the quartz. The second type occurs as fine fractures filled with quartz molybdenite in the form of a stockwork halo radiating out from 20 to 200 feet from the quartz veins. Minor hematite, magnetite and chalcopyrite are also present. Mineralization is roughly proportional to the extent of kaolinization in the quartz monzonite, kaolinization being one of three distinct forms of hydrothermal alteration. Pyrite is commonly associated with molybdenum mineralization within the orebody and a pyrite halo is recognized on the south side of the orebody.

The brines from the sub-surface of the Laguna del Rey dry lake are pumped to Química del Rey, S. A. plant, where they are cooled in adiabatic crystallizers precipitating sodium sulphate decahydrate. This salt is dehydrated in multiple effect evaporators and dried in rotary kilns producing high purity anhydrous sodium sulphate. The spent brines from the sodium sulphate operation are concentrated in solar ponds, precipitating astrakanite and leaving a brine with a higher concentration of magnesium ions. This brine is treated with calcium chloride solution to eliminate the remainder of sulphates, leaving a solution of magnesium chloride ready for the manufacture of refractory grade magnesium oxide or periclase. The magnesium chloride is reacted with dolime to produce magnesium hidroxide which is washed, filtered, and calcined to produce soft burned magnesium oxide, which is briquetted and dead burned to produce the periclase.

INTRODUCTION The phrase "subsidence control planning" can refer to the use of specific mining methods and-specialized techniques to control subsidence events or it can refer to planning for subsidence by predicting its magnitude and timing and further planning mitigation strategies. In the first case the objective is actually subsidence prevention while in the second it is a design procedure that seeks to maximize the use of both surface and subsurface resources. Neither technology is well developed at this point. The purpose of this presentation is to briefly outline the Department of Energy's Subsidence Program. This program is, in general, bases on the premise that subsidence control technology, by any definition, can be accomplished only through a thorough and rigorous understanding of subsidence phenomena. This understanding must come from many well planned and executed studies of stress redistribution and strata deformation as they occur during mining activities. There is presently considerable incentive to improve our subsidence engineering capabilities due to the desire for increased coal utilization with acceptable environmental impact. Considerable research in this area is being sponsored by federal and state governmental agencies, universities, and the coal industry. Federal sponsorship has been borne by the Department of Energy, the Bureau of Mines, the Office of Surface Mining and the U.S. Geological Survey for the most part. These agencies have carried out basic research in their laboratories and have contracted with other organizations for additional work. At this time most of the available resources are directed toward contract research, especially in DOE. It is the DOE research plan which will be addressed here.
