Simulated weathering tests are used to estimate leachate quality of rocks containing varying concentrations of pyrite and carbonates at mines. This study reports the inter-laboratory results from the third phase of a three part effort to develop a standardized, reproducible simulated weathering test for coal mine overburden. Initial development in phases I and II included evaluation of different test apparatus, effects of particle size, gas composition, leaching frequency and other variables. Phases I and II results are reported by Brady et al (2004) and Hornberger et al (2004). In Phase III, a standard column leaching protocol was used by eight commercial, government and university labs to test five rocks of different lithology, pyrite and carbonate content. Ideally, a simulated weathering test should have three characteristics to be useful in mine drainage studies. These include the capability to produce repeatable results, accuracy in simulating field conditions, and a concise test protocol of weeks to a few months. Simulated weathering, or kinetic testing, produces an effluent that simulates mine drainage composition. This can be beneficial for predicting mine drainage quality in comparison to whole rock analyses. The effluent may be tested for the same water quality parameters as the drainage produced during mining, such as pH, acidity, alkalinity, sulfate, iron, manganese, aluminum or other parameters. If the physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the kinetic tests are representative of those found in the mine environment, leachate composition may be used to estimate the water quality parameter concentrations produced during mining. Hornberger and Brady (1998), and Geidel et al (2000), compiled comprehensive chapters on kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction. These sources included: (1) a chronology and synopsis of scientific literature on these kinetic tests as they have developed over approximately 50 years, (2) discussion of the influence of physical, chemical, and biological processes, and (3) general guidelines for test procedures, data interpretation, and recommendations for further research to develop standard methods. Most of the kinetic test methods in use today were substantially developed and applied more than 40 or 50 years ago, including leaching columns (Braley, 1949), humidity cells (Hanna and Brant, 1962), Soxhlet reactors (Pedro, 1961), and field scale tests (Glover and Kenyon, 1962). . The most commonly used kinetic tests for mine drainage prediction are leaching columns and humidity cells. While these kinetic test methods and others have been used in hundreds of mine drainage studies as shown in Hornberger and Brady (1998) and other references (e.g. Sorini, 1997), they have rarely been used in coal mine permitting by either regulatory agencies or the mining industry. The major impediment to routine use of kinetic test methods is the variation in the design and operation of these kinetic tests, and lack of a standardized, accepted (e.g. by EPA or ASTM) test method. Interpretation and data comparison from different studies can be difficult. METHODS Five rocks of varying lithology, mineralogy, carbonate and pyrite content were collected in bulk from Pennsylvanian age coal measures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Indiana. Mineralogical composition of the samples was characterized in detail by Hammerstrom et al (in press) using optical, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron microprobe methods. Acid Base Accounting (Sobek et al 1978; Skousen et al, 1997, Kania, 1998) was performed on bulk samples for % total sulfur (%S) as a measure of pyrite and potential acid generation, and Neutralization Potential (NP) as an index of carbonate content. A modified NP test, following the procedure suggested by Skousen et al, 1997 was also conducted for four of the five samples. The modified NP test accounts for initial acid consumption, Fe oxidation, and subsequent Fe hydrolysis by the iron carbonate mineral siderite. Siderite, even though it is a carbonate gives zero net alkalinity. Lithologic, Acid Base Accounting and general mineral composition data for the five rocks are shown in table 1 (see Appendix). Whole rock elemental analysis for major and trace elements was conducted on a sub-sample of each rock type. One laboratory was contracted to mix, homogenize, and size the bulk samples and prepare sub-samples for all the participating labs. Splits were sent to eight labs, and each organization was provided a detailed set of instructions for column assembly and leaching procedure. The protocol was developed based on results from phases 1and 2 of this study. The principal features of the column assembly are: a specific composition of particle size by weight (table 2), weekly leaching cycles, and incubation under humidified air containing 10% CO2. Figure 1 shows the column construction. [ ] The particle size distribution of the crushed rock sample is largely an artifact of the crushing process, rather than a natural systems process like the particle size distribution of a soil or an unconsolidated sedimentary deposit. The standardized particle size distribution, shown in Table 2, promotes operational consistency of the weathering test procedure, and provides better control over reaction kinetics. Large amounts of fine particles within specific zones of the leaching columns have been found to impede uniform fluid flow and/or gas flow (Hornberger and Brady, 1998). Regarding reaction kinetics, the importance of surface area to volume ratios has been described in a previous phase of this study (Brady et al., 2004), and significant differences in crushed particle size distributions and effective surface areas were found among the lithologic units. Until recent years the ventilation of metal mines has not generally received much consideration, and the importance of pure air has been sometimes overlooked. SINCE the adoption by the U. S. Bureau of Standards several years ago of specifications for standard 100- and 200-mesh sieves, frequent requests have been received that this Bureau test and certify sieves of other sizes than these. With a view to the adoption of a series of standard testing sieves which might be of use to all industries making fineness tests, this Bureau for .two years has been studying the question of such a standard screen scale. Various scales that have been proposed were considered, and information was sought of representative firms in the various industries interested as to their requirements. Manufacturers of sieves have also been consulted as to the desirability of different screen scales and the practicability of their manufacture. As a result of this study of the question, a conference was called at the Bureau of Standards, Apr. 20, 1916, of representatives of various committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association,. [Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Water Works Association, American Institute of Metals and the American Spice Trade Association; also representatives of the Committee of Revision of the U. This paper explores development of a novel ore characterisation method for the precise measurement of practical minimum comminution energy. A monolayer of particles with a narrow size distribution is broken using a precision rolls crusher (PRC); an ore characterisation device developed to overcome the shortcomings of conventional tests. For energy measurement, PRC uses two shaftmounted rotary torque transducers. These transducers acquire precise torque and angular speed data in response to the load applied to the rotating shafts during breakage events, which is converted into energy. The test progressively crushes feed particles down to final product size in many controlled breakage stages. The generation of fines in each breakage stage is then plotted as a function of input energy. The inverse of the gradient of this plot provides the size specific energy (SSE) in kWh/t of material generated below a predefined marker size; -75 μm in this case. The PRC has potential to evolve as a geometallurgical ore characterisation test—it is simple, fast, requires small sample mass (200–300 g), covers a wide feed particle size range (10 mm to 115 µm), and provides ideal SSE measurements that can be used for the calibration of on-site production equipment.

Coal samples are sometimes taken from a wet spot in a mine, or from an open car or pile shortly after rain, and submitted for analysis in a dripping wet condition. Other samples are taken from a dry spot in the mine, or from an open car or pile after a period of dry weather. Comparison of the analyses obtained in the two cases would be absurd, although the samples might be of essentially the same coat apart from the surface moisture on the one. The analyst therefore attempts to reduce all samples to an equal basis by the operation known as air-drying. Air-drying is practised by the chemist for three reasons: (1) To make it possible to grind the coal to powder. (2) To bring the coal sample to a condition in which it will not change in weight rapidly whilst portions are being weighed out for analysis -in other words, to bring it into equilibrium with the air in the laboratory. (3) To determine the water-retaining power of the coal. Any kind of drying is satisfactory for (1); the coal should be dried more or less according to the humidity at the time in the laboratory for (2); whilst it should be always dried to the same extent for (3). In other words, no method can be satisfactory for both (2) and (3). In this paper the only question considered is (3) -that is, air-drying the coal under standard conditions so that strictly comparable results can be obtained for the water content of coals after air-drying. After a sample of wet coal is exposed, it loses moisture until it is in equilibrium with the air at the time: thus the coal will loose distinctly more water in air of 20 per cent relative humidity, for example, than it would in air of 80 per cent.

"INTRODUCTION The 2014 SME Guide for Reporting Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves (the SME Guide) has been adopted by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME). The SME Guide is recommended as a minimum standard and a basis for developing industry best practices in the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves for public and private purposes. The Guide is therefore strongly recommended to be used by members of this organization. The SME Guide was updated in 2014 to include CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserve International Standards) core definitions, and it is envisioned that the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will adopt the SME Guide in 2016. However, as of the end of 2015, the SEC Industry Guide 7 remains the standard for the U.S. reporting of Mineral Reserves. This paper will cover the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves, a discussion of Modifying Factors, and the classification definitions and guidelines. The definitions and guidelines contained in this report are from the SME Guide. FRAMEWORK FOR MINERAL RESOURCE AND MINERAL RESERVE CLASSIFICATION Figure 1 illustrates the classification of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves using the Guide. Mineral Resources are divided into three classifications of Inferred, Indicated, or Measured while Mineral Reserves include Probable and Proven classifications. These classifications reflect improved knowledge and confidence of the deposit from the top of the figure to the bottom. In other terms, the deposit risk also decreases from top to bottom.The relationships in Figure 1 reflect different levels of geoscientific knowledge and different degrees of technical and economic evaluation. Mineral Resources can be estimated on the basis of geoscientific information with input from other disciplines to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. It was not too many years ago that the classification of a Mineral Resource was based on the evaluation of a limited set of factors that included spatial drill hole and grade distribution (kriging variance, as example), distance to the closest hole, and number of samples used to estimate a block grade. These are still important considerations, but classification following the Guide must also take into account sample integrity, sample QAQC, database integrity and completeness, geological understanding, and geological and grade or quality continuity. In addition, a general consideration of the Modifying Factors, to establish reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction, adds complexity to the classification."

Of late, solidification modeling has progressed considerably to emerge as a viable simulation tool for the foundry engineer. A wide variety of tools exist in the commercial market to cater to the various needs of the design/ foundry engineer. In fact, recent developments in the area of solidification modeling have been so rapid that a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art is very much needed. In this paper, an attempt is made to summarize the various issues of solidification modeling, at the same time addressing the historical evolution of the subject. The various phenomenological issues covered in this paper include: heat transfer, fluid flow during mold-filling, solidification kinetics and microstructural evolution, quick-analysis schemes for approximations, porosity prediction models, and the phenomena of fluid flow in the mushy zone. Modeling issues related to the development of solidification stresses which lead to defects such as hot tears and the development of artificial intelligence concepts in the area of rigging design are also discussed. Due emphasis is given to the various phenomena which add to the complexity of the whole subject, and the various alternatives available for solving a particular problem. For example, the heat transfer problem can be approached by the use of simple modulus schemes or by solving the conduction equation to obtain a more accurate temperature distribution. Similarly the microstructural evolution can be handled in a deterministic way by use of nucleation and growth models, or in a probabilistic way by use of empirical models. The main goal of this paper is to put the multi-faceted problem of solidification modeling in proper perspective so that it can serve as a guide for future developments in this area.

A constitutive model for rock interfaces based on the principles of static fatigue is proposed. The model is applicable to weak rock or joints with cohesion. Friction and dilation are decreased as plastic work increases. At equilibrium, the creep time increases by one time-step interval, and interface cohesion at each node decreases according to a power function. A constant-load, direct-shear simulation showed that the model is cap- able of mimicking constant-rate and tertiary creep and predicting failure. Tests on core from a coal mine showed constant-rate and, sometimes, tertiary creep, but also weak transitory creep. The cohesion deterioration function may need modification to simulate primary-phase creep. If model parameters are known for a site, the model can predict the onset of tertiary creep and failure. Such predictions can help engineers make better entry design and support decisions, which will reduce the likelihood of roof falls and increase safety for underground miners.

THE statistical analysis of blast-furnace data was undertaken to determine some of the relations which exist between the variables involved in furnace operation, and particularly to show the effect of variation of slag composition on such economically important factors as coke consumption, daily tonnage of pig iron and sulfur elimination. It was desired to correlate the results obtained in- commercial practice with those predicted from a study of the quaternary system lime-alumina-silica-magnesia. This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of blast-furnace daily operating reports, and is intended to indicate the suitability of our method of attack and something of the results that may be expected from an extended statistical examination of such data. It has been shown that blast-furnace slags are not composed of oxides, as reported by chemical analysis, but are actually composed of several compounds, each made up of two or more of the oxides present.1 These compounds persist in the liquid state, and the properties of a slag are the properties of a mixture of these compounds, and not of a mixture of the ultimate oxides .2,3 The oxides lime, alumina, silica and magnesia make up 94 to 96 per cent. of the usual blast-furnace slag, and assuming that we may neglect the remainder of the components, we may determine the minerals present, and their relative proportions, from a study of the quaternary system involving these four oxides. Operating reports from 15 furnaces were available for this investigation. Complete slag analyses for one slag per day were available, permitting the calculation of the mineral composition of the slags used. Basic, malleable and foundry irons, with silicon varying from 0.75 to 4.50 per cent. were included in the reports for this examination.

SYNOPSIS An analysis was made of records of accidents involving Bantu mineworkers and which resulted in either minor injuries or hospitalizations to determine patterns in underground accidents from which to formulate priorities in accident prevention in gold mines. The results showed that: (i) specific labour categories, such as inexperienced men, are exposed to certain types of hazards the extent of which warrant the separate design of safety programmes to meet their specific needs; (ii) the systematic study of minor accidents provides a dependable source of. information of which safety departments could make greater use in their efforts to control and prevent mining accidents.

Falls of ground, such as falls of roof and sidewall collapses, are a major cause of fatalities and injuries in South African collieries. Based on information obtained from the accident reports of the various Chief Inspectors of nines, a statistical analysis was conducted covering the period 1970 to 1988. This study shows that the volume of rock in a fatal fall of ground is often quite small. In intersections, fatal falls are on average larger than in roadways and at the face. It was also found that in 36 % of all fatal falls of ground no temporary or permanent support was installed at the site of the accident.

The majority of Appalachian coal deposits lie in a multi-seam environment. Historically, the decision to extract a particular seam has been based on ease of access, ownership and economics rather than ground control considerations. As mining progresses and seams are being mined out, it is increasingly common to find working and abandoned mines in close vertical proximity to each other. Such contiguous operations can produce both positive and negative ground control situations in neighboring seams. These ground control problems, defined as interaction problems, are frequently reported, and their severity can range from minor roof problems that may require no additional support to complete loss of a large section of coal reserves (Stemple, 1955; Peng & Chandra, 1980; Haycocks & Karmis, 1983; Su et al, 1984). As a consequence, interaction problems are of growing concern to the Appalachian underground coal industry. Although interaction problems in multi-seam mining have been recognized for many years and many investigations have been conducted to study the problems, the ground control principles involved in their development are only partially understood. Previous research has identified four interaction mechanisms: pillar load transfer, innerburden shearing, arching effects and upper seam subsidence (Haycocks et al, 1982; Haycocks & Karmis, 1983). Pillar load transfer mechanisms and innerburden shearing have been successfuly used to explain interaction phenomena associated with undermining operations, while arching and subsidence have been used to assess problems during overmining. In addition, interaction-controlling factors such as cover, innerburden and seam thicknesses, extraction percentages on both seams, time delay between operations on two seams, and characteristics of innerburden rock have been identified and utilized in evaluation of interaction effects (Haycocks & Karmis, 1983; Webster et a1.,1984). As an example, Figure 1 shows the relation of innerburden layering and thickness to interaction on the lower seam. The combination of such theoretical work and the analysis of case study information has made it possible to determine, with a certain degree of confidence, the interaction damage in undermining conditions. The results of such an approach have been sufficiently successful and complete to be incorporated into a software package to assist field engineers in estimating potential interaction effects when undermining a previously mined upper seam (Grenoble et al, 1984; Grenoble & Haycocks, 1985; Grenoble et al, 1985). Advantages and disadvantages of deflecting (wedging) diamond-drill holes to obtain sampling data are compared with the alternative of drilling additional holes. The discussion is based on a statistical analysis of a large set of deflection data from exploratory boreholes in South African gold mines. Representative cost comparisons show the conditions under which deflections are likely to be desirable.

The Zeehan field has yielded over 190 000 tons of lead and 26,000,000 oz of silver. Moh of the production took place between the initial discovery of silver-lead ore in 1882 and 1920, and the greatest part was extracted from fissure lodes in the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian rocks. It is demonstrated that the prosperity of the mines relied upon the silver content, which is apparently highest in these beds, particularly where spilitic rocks are associated with them. In contrast, galena occurring in orebodies emplaced in the Gordon Limestone is low in silver.Most of the workings are relatively shallow due in some cases to enrichment related to erosion surfaces.Fault zones within a complex anticlinal structure exposing the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian formations appear to have been major factors in the control of mineralization.

A frequent challenge in mine water management and mine design is estimation of precipitation and extreme rainfall given a short record of site meteorological data. For remote mine projects, typically only a few years of rainfall data are available, which is far too short for estimation of design rainfall event, such as the 1-in-100 year storm. A frequency-paired approach is presented for comparing daily precipitation records from a mine site with a long-term regional station and provides the basis to transpose the long-term record to the mine site. This allows a long-term synthetic precipitation record to be developed for the mine site that can be used to undertake site water balance studies, determine pond storage requirements, assess water supply options and address other surface water management issues. Conventional approaches are based on chronologically-paired data and when applied to daily data generally yield poor correlations between stations. In the frequency-pairing approach, statistical distributions (two-parameter gamma distribution) are fit to daily data from two stations and used to calculate daily and extreme precipitation values for the short-term site (which is typically a mine or other project site). The method is demonstrated using data from two meteorological stations located along the south coast of British Columbia, Canada. Use of a fitted two-parameter gamma distribution (or other distribution) provides a sound theoretical approach to comparing precipitation data from two sites and the basis for transposing a long-term record to generate synthetic precipitation series and extreme rainfall values at mine sites.CITATION:Millar, R, 2013. In 1997, 9.2 million tonnes of mined, recoverable copper was produced, of which, 1.8 million tonnes or 19.4% was produced by leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. The amount of copper produced by this method grew faster than those attained from concentrate smelting, signifying the growing importance of this low-cost production method. Statistical experimental design, unlike traditional approaches, allows for proper distribution of experiments within the boundaries of factors being studied such that the number of experiments required to develop a sound relationship between the factors and a response is minimized. In the past, very little use has been made of statistical experimental design in copper electrowinning studies. Traditional one- variable-at-a-time approaches are widely employed for this purpose. The present study employs a factorial experimental design to relate current efficiency with current density (180 and 300 A/m2), copper concentration (25 and 65 gL), and temperature (40 and 60 °C). Pure synthetic electrolyte with a constant acid concentration of 180 g/L was used throughout the study. The designed study produced a linear relationship where the independent variables of current density, copper concentration, and temperature, and their interactions, were found statistically significant. It was shown that current efficiency could not solely be used as a predictor of copper cathode quality. The quality of the deposit is difficult to be incorporated into a model or relation. It was determined that other measures, such as cathode morphology and crystal structure should be considered. This was done through XRD and SEM analysis.

The estimation of the tonnage and grade of payable ore in a mine and the correct policy of selective mining based on such estimates, is of vital importance to the mining engineer it is surprising, therefore, that more attention has not been devoted on the Witwatersrand to the scientific improvement of mine valuation methods. At present these methods consist almost entirely of the application of simple arithmetic and empirical formulae guided by practical experience, and ignore the many advantages to be gained from a careful statistical analysis of the behaviour of the gold values. The science of statistics has expanded rapidly during the last two decades and its value as a powerful and indispensable tool is now recognized not only by research workers and scientists but also, ever-increasingly, by the commercial and industrial world. This being the case it is noteworthy that in a mining field such as the Rand with its highly developed and advanced mining methods, singularly little attention has been paid to the analysis of mine valuation problems on a modern statistical basis. This omission is even more striking when cognizance is taken of the wealth of sampling data concerning the gold ore which is available and of the far-reaching decisions and deductions constantly being based on such data. Some contributions have however been made from time to time towards the application of statistics to mine valuation on the Rand (References Nos. 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12), but none of these have been generally applied in practice and a systematic practical approach based on clearly deemed fundamental concepts still appears to be lacking. The object of this paper is, therefore, to define these statistical concepts and to indicate briefly the lines along which statistical methods can be applied profitability in solving some of the existing problems and in improving the general standard of mine valuation on the Rand For this purpose a knowledge of mathematical statistics is essential, but as this paper is primarily intended to provide the mine valuator with a practical introduction to statistical application in his field, the mathematics is confined to a short annexure, together with references from which details can be obtained.
