The southeastern shores of Great Slave lake present a curious anomaly in geographical and geological exploration, in that an area so large and important, and withal so comparatively accessible, should nevertheless have remained unexplored, unmapped, and indeed almost unknown, until quite recent" times On their return from the famous journey to the mouth of the Coppermine, the band of Indians with whom he travelled led Samuel Hearne across Slave lake. He was the first white man to see that great body of water and it is rather curious that it should have been seen first from the north rather than from the south. Hearne's account of the lake is vague, and he made no attempt ?to map the part through which he travelled. About 30 years later John Franklin, on his first journey to the Arctic, crossed the lake from the mouth of the Slave river to the Yellow Knife river. Franklin's maps show all of his route in accurate detail, except that part of it which lay through Slave lake. In 1833-34, Captain, afterwards Sir George, Back made the first exploration of the eastern end of the lake. Captain Back was then on his way to the Arctic coast by way of the Great Fish river, and his Indian guides led him through Great Slave lake by the route they had followed from time immemorial. This route, partly because of its directness, and partly because of its sheltered character, lay through the great mass of islands in the middle of the lake to the Talthei narrows, and thence along the sheltered north shore with its many coves and harbours. THE plan of organizing a summer class of students of the School of Mines, for the practical study of mining and miner's work, received at the outset the following cordial indorsement : I have thought over the plan proposed by you of taking the students to the mines during the summer, and of having them actually take part, under the direction of skilled workmen, in all the various kinds of mining work; and of using them as a carps of engineers to make Inside and outside surveys, particularly with a view to the detailed study of the geology of the mine. I have no hesitation in saying, that if the students have been previously instructed in the theoretical part of their studies, by lectures and practice during the winter, the plan would be an admirable one. Of course experience will suggest modifications of detail. From the work you have done at our mines this spring, I feel sure that you would be perfectly competent to carry out your plan, and I shall gladly aid you in any way I can. "Yours, sincerely, T. B. Coxe." The plan of the proposed summer school thus indorsed by Mr. Coxe was adopted by the trustees of Columbia College, and an appropriation of one thousand dollars, or so much thereof as might be necessary, was voted for the experiment. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that. year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the Engineering and Mining Journal, of August 11, 1877, will give an idea of the 'organization of the school and the work required of the students. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into squads of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were assigned to the Care of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. Half of the students worked in the morning and the other half in the afternoon, one squad at a time with each miner. The times of going and coming to and from work were so arranged that each student spent four to four and a half hours in the mine each day. While in the mine they assisted the miner to load his car, thereby learning readily to distinguish 'slate ' and

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

If recent trends in the rotary drill market are indicative of future surface mining operating practice, then the move to scaled-up mining equipment by manufacturers may soon be over. Of the 48 different rotary drills currently produced by 12 manufacturers, over 60% were introduced within the past five years. By far, the new drills have been in the "small" class, capable of producing up to a 229-mm-diam (9-in.) blasthole with 222 kN (50,000 lb) or less of down pressure. New rotary drills in the "large" class, capable of producing a 311-mm-diam (12 1/4-in.) blasthole with up to 423 kN (95,000 lb) down pressure, have also been prominent. In the super-size category, new drills producing blasthole sizes to 444-mm-diam (17 1/2-in.) with up to 578 kN (130,000 lb) have been minimal.

In January 1993, Pyramid Resources began implementation of a supervisory expert control system at a U.S Cu concentrator. The objective of this control system was to improve plant profitability through unit operation optimization and integration. This paper documents the key aspects of the project, including: economic and associated benefits, system architecture, concepts of implementation, process control strategies, practical aspects of implementation and conclusions. The implementation of expert control at this concentrator has resulted in an estimated benefit of $50,500 per day. This is a net result of improved tonnage, reduced reagent consumption, improved concentrate grade and reduced energy per ton produced.

The paper reviews the scope, timing and financial impact of this significant project, which involves the supply and transportation of nearly 4 million tons per year of bituminous coal and lignite from sources in British Columbia. Alberta and Saskatchewan to Ontario Hydro's generating stations. The critical factors involved in the selection and utilization of these coals are discussed in relation to the three types of coal to be utilized initially. The paper then deals with each of the significant project elements to be undertaken by the various companies involved in the mining and movement of the coal, beginning with production at the mine through rail shipment to Thunder Bay, train-to-ship terminalling, shipment by lake vessel from there to the generating station, and finally blending the bituminous coal with United States coal prior to combustion. The review discusses the key features of the facilities involved in each case and the status and timing of the project elements , which are phased for the start of coal shipment by mid-1978. The paper concludes with some observations on the capability of the project to handle increased tonnage s and the challenges facing the movement in terms of quality , quantity and cost.

Towards the goal of a better understanding of the structure-proton conductivity relationship in PEM materials, this project concerns the design of ordered polymeric solids containing well-defined sulfonate aggregates. The approach employed involves the templation of sulfonated monomers using core principles of crystal engineering. In addition to sulfonate groups, the monomeric units contain crosslinkable functionalities to enable formation of a covalently linked network. The templation strongly directs the construction of well-defined sulfonate clusters and aggregates. Structural, sorption and conductivity data for the networks will be shown.

Reactivation of highwall slope failures during adverse weather had intermittently impacted haul road access into a previously mined open pit. These impacts ranged from limited access to full closures; however, the greater impact was to an underground mine that was developed within the open pit. Following several significant precipitation events, a rapid snow melts greatly accelerated movements finally closing the haul road and destabilizing other past failures. In addition to re-designing the overall pit access, the decision was made to relocate the primary portal to a more stable highwall. An accelerated surface geotechnical review was required to advance the portal relocation; however, only existing information from past investigation, existing geology model, visual inspections, and slope monitoring data were available for the assessment - no new investigations or data collection could be completed within the allowable timeframe. The evaluation included a review of the geology, an assessment of the current highwall condition and previously observed performance, and a rockfall analysis to evaluate existing catchment above the proposed new portal location.

One of the advantages of the market¬place, economists believe, is that it automatically generates information which would otherwise be hard to come by. For example, supply and demand signals imply something about private and social sacrifices and benefits. This information is seldom perfect, and can neglect some costs and benefits, but it nevertheless is crucial data. Moreover, marketplaces can also eliminate the need for some information. For example; since market participants are voluntary actors, only those transactions are culminated in which a mutual gain occurs. This eliminates the need for some cost-benefit calculations. A corollary to this standard economic doctrine is that whenever a government or other party supplants a marketplace, it must generate some of the information either lost or newly-needed. (Schultze, 1977) In 1981, following a ten-year moratorium the United States government resumed leasing of publicly-owned coal. When the government designed this program, the goal was to guide the marketplace, rather than merely to respond, as a landlord, to the market's wishes. This goal has been modified somewhat, due both to the changing political climate and to the practical difficulties of implementing so ambitious an undertaking. Nevertheless, during this period of program design and implementation, part of the challenge of creating and using the necessary information fell to the professional modelling fraternity.

"In an environment like the mining industry, which is characterized by different stakeholders with multiple objectives, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a useful approach for optimal decision-making. The application of MCDA techniques in the mining industry has predominantly been in mine planning and related problems, although no comprehensive survey has previously been undertaken to establish the application trends. A survey of the use of MCDA techniques was therefore conducted using case studies from the literature. It was noted that often two or more methods are applied to the same problem in order to increase confidence in the solution derived. As the number of criteria and alternatives increases, some methods become inefficient. A combination of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method with other MCDA techniques was the most frequently used approach, indicating the efficiency of the AHP method, especially when evaluating problems with more criteria and fewer alternatives. A combination of fuzzy theory with AHP or other methods incorporates uncertainty. The findings from the survey will benefit users applying MCDA techniques to solve mine planning and related problems.IntroductionA country’s natural resources serve the needs of different groups of people within the country. These different groups are collectively known as stakeholders (Herath and Prato, 2006). Stakeholders have different needs, preferences, and expectations, which describe and define the criteria to be considered in decision-making. The options available as solutions describe the alternatives in decisionmaking theory. The criteria and alternatives have to be evaluated simultaneously when making decisions, and this is when multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques become invaluable (Herath and Prato, 2006) because the human mind is considered to be limited when solving complex and intangible problems with several criteria and alternatives (Saaty, 2007). MCDA techniques belong to a broad group of techniques called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. The other group of techniques within MCDM comprises the multi-objective decision-making (MODM) techniques. MODM techniques are generally used to solve problems with an infinite number of alternatives, while MCDA techniques are generally used to solve problems with a finite number of alternatives (Musingwini, 2010)."

"In 1995 and 2003, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted surveys to determine the number of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) that were being used in underground coal mines in the United States. The survey reports gave data for the different AMS manufacturers, the different types of equipment monitored, and the different types of gas sensors and their locations. Since the last survey in 2003, MSHA has changed the regulation requirements for early fire detection along belt haulage entries. As of Dec. 31, 2009, point-type heat sensors are prohibited for use for an early fire detection system. Instead, carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are now required. This report presents results from a new survey and examines how the regulation changes have had an impact on the use of CO sensors in underground coal mines in the United States. The locations and parameters monitored by AMS and CO systems are also discussed.IntroductionThe last survey conducted by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on atmospheric monitoring systems used in underground coal mines in the United States was in 2003 (Francart, 2005). A total of 146 active mines were surveyed. The survey report states that since 1995 there had been a steady increase in the use of atmospheric monitoring systems in underground coal mines as the technology of carbon monoxide (CO) sensors was improved by manufacturers. Atmospheric monitoring systems had become more reliable, and some CO sensors could be purchased with the capability to discriminate between the CO produced by a fire versus CO produced by diesel equipment. This increase in reliability had reduced the number of false alarms and the response time. The faster response time to a developing fire allowed miners to take the necessary action to put out the fire or exit the mine.At the time of the last MSHA survey, some mines still used point-type heat sensors to detect the presence of a fire on conveyor belts. This detection method works by measuring the temperature of the air around the sensor. As a fire starts to develop, smoke and hot gases are produced from the combustion process, and the air is heated up. Once the air and gases reach a designated temperature detected by the point-type heat sensor, a fire alarm signal is generated. Studies have shown that the response times for detecting the presence of a fire using CO sensors are much shorter than when using point-type heat sensors (Conti and Litton, 1995)."

In 1998, the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section of the International Society of Explosives Engineers formed a working group to collect and compile a list of regulations limiting ground vibrations from blasting. The goal was to locate those countries, states, provinces, and cities that have such regulations, identify which governmental body enforces them, and determine what limits on ground vibrations are imposed upon the blasting operations. In the course of this study, data was collected from over 60 jurisdictions where peak particle velocity restrictions range from non-existent to very stringent. Some of the regulations were found to be based upon standards grounded in good science, while others possess little or no technical justification. This presentation will summarize the findings of the subcommittee, focusing primarily on what the limits are, which type of blasting operations must adhere to them, and to what structures they apply. The degree to which these regulations are based upon valid scientific and engineering research will be discussed. First attempts to apply computers for the modeling, simulation and analysis of mineral processing unit operations date back to almost twenty years. Since then substantial efforts have been directed to the development of computer software for mineral processing. Current literature indicates considerable activities in the development of computer packages for interactive and batch simulation of individual unit operations and integrated plant operations. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various simulation systems that have been described in the literature along with a discussion of present trends in the development of mineral processing simulation software. Finally, the paper includes a detailed discussion of the desirable features in future simulation packages.

Most research into planning of open pit mines has been based on evaluation of volume-element block models in terms of their net present value. The major issues revolve around two interdependent problems the optimum ultimate pit and time-based scheduling. Despite feedback between the two problems, they are usually treated as separate tasks.The ultimate open pit is defined by the removal of whole blocks so that their net present value is maximised. This gives planners an estimate of the total worth of the venture in present terms, and is crucial to obtaining funding. All cost and profit values are assumed to be static throughout the mine life, and the only physical constraint usually taken into account is that of safe, average, wall slopes, which must be approximated by the removal of whole blocks. Modelling of any further constraints (for example, access roads and true wall slopes) is usually achieved by adding them to the optimal pit by hand. Typically this degrades the model by between five and 20 per cent of its value - which then brings into question whether it is still the true optimum.This paper reviews the dominant methods in use for this first task the ultimate open-pit planning problem. Some new optimisations are given, and the algorithms are examined in terms of their efficiency and accuracy. Finally, suggestions are made for improvement of model accuracy and eventual expansion into solutions of the more complete dual problem - that of simultaneously finding the optimum ultimate pits and dynamic schedules for the venture.

The three basic ingredients of fertilizers are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen comes from natural gas or other sources and is usually a "manufactured" ingredient. Phosphorus and potassium come from mineral sources which are mined in open pit and underground mines all over the world. Phosphorus is one of the 15 chemical elements needed to sustain life. Along with nitrogen and potassium, it is essential to the fertility of the soil and to the growth of plant life. Plants require phosphorus for proper soil conditions, early root formation, and crop maturity. Humans and animals require phosphorus for bone and tooth development. The primary raw material for phosphorous fertilizers is phosphate rock. It is found and mined in many areas of the world. Morocco, the United States, USSR, Tunisia, and some Pacific Islands are the leading rock producers. Other sources of phosphate are guano, bone meal, and other natural organics, but these comprise a very small percentage of all phosphate used. Phosphate rock in the United States is mined in Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Idaho, and Montana. Florida alone produces about 70% of all the rock mined in this country, mostly from a 20 X 30 mile area in Polk and Hillsborough Counties in central Florida known as the Bone Valley district. There are phosphate reserves in many parts of Florida, and within the past three years mining has begun in north Florida in Hamilton Country (see Fig. 1). In 1967, world phosphate rock production was about 75 million short tons (st). Gravity concentration of gold is an important facet of gold processing technology in Western Australia. While great interest has been directed at gold leaching technology and considerable developments achieved, gravity concentration has received much less attention and this paper provides an update on the current practice and developments that have been achieved in recent years.A survey of 72 gold processing plants in Western Australia was conducted in 1991 and some 31 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Of these, 19 plants were using gravity concentration and this paper highlights some of the features of these operations.

"The closure of the iron and steel making plant at Consett in Durham in 1980 marked the end of an era-a long era in the world's iron and steel making history. Iron had been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century.The paper describes sites in the area that first worked the bloomery process and then, in the 16th century, as did most of Europe, graduated to the blast furnace process. The main emphasis is on the early introduction of coal to iron making at the end of the 18th century and the use of the steam engine to render integrated sites possible.IntroductionIron has been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from clear evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century. Like many other countries, the United Kingdom benefitted from the visits of foreign observers, such as Jars, Svedenstierna, de la Houliere and Dufrenoy, who left detailed records. In modern times, information gained from excavations of iron and steel making sites has supplemented the historical record.Natural ResourcesUp to the end of the 19th century, the industry was wholly dependent on its own resources. Iron ore, limestone, wood, coal and water power were all found a short distance away from the main valleys of the Tyne and Wear. The main sources of iron ore were the coal measures, with rider ores from the lead vein s in Alston and Weardale, and carbonate ores from shale horizons in the Carboniferous limestone. Good coking coal was available from West Durham and reasonable coal from the Tyne valley and Northumberland limestone. Limestone was plentiful."

THE emphasis in some political quarters on hemispheric unity and defense indicates Latin American mineral resources should be more extensively developed. However, United States mining companies have, in many instances, been discouraged by the laws of southern neighbors. At the same time, some of the countries have liberalized their mining laws in an effort to attract investments from the United States. The resultant confusion has been detrimental to all concerned. Ownership of Mineral Deposits Examination of the mining codes of Latin American countries shows that, without exception, governments reserve the right of direct ownership of all mineral resources. Ownership can be divided between the Feredal Government and the states or among the Federal Government, the states, and private individuals. However, in the majority of the nations constitutional authority vests all mineral rights solely in the Federal Government. Mexico is the only country that has expressed Federal ownership as imprescriptible; the other republics have not defined the exact significance of government ownership. The implication derived from the general economic and political climate is that all mineral resources are ultimately to be regarded as a national heritage. Whether a concession granted to an individual or corporation carries any right of private property is shaded with a variety of meanings. The exceptions at one extreme are Argentina and Bolivia, whose laws state explicitly that a concession granted to a juridical person is an act of the state, and the land becomes the private property of the individual, and the concessions constitute real property. However, in Mexico mining concessions or grants do not create rights of fee-simple ownership. The concession only conveys the exclusive right to explore, develop, and work the deposits. The mining property remains the property of the state. In some instances exploitation concessions represent a compromise between private and government ownership. In Honduras the period granted to a mining enterprise is fixed at 90 years. At the end of that time, the enterprise and all installations revert to the state without compensation.

A historical background of the development of automated material balance packages is presented including a summary of currently available packages and a description of the present work at the Mineral Resources Research Center of the University of Minnesota. A brief mathematical statement of the problem is given and solution techniques discussed. The problems and difficulties normally associated with material balances, both hand calculated and computer calculated are described. Several aspects of the available material balance packages as related to the "user/computer" interface are evaluated in detail. Elements of the material balance packages that affect the solutions are examined and the relative performance of the main packages on specialized problems presented. Finally, areas associated with automated material balances that require further work before computer packages can be widely used in industry are outlined.
