IN general, fatty acids or their alkali salts do not cause clean quartz to float. However, the presence of multivalent ions, such as the alkaline-earth metal ions and heavy-metal ions, can activate quartz and thus make it respond to soap flotation. The mechanism of activation and soap flotation of quartz has been studied.1-4 The problem was attacked by making flotation tests rather than by careful adsorption measurements on suspensions of ground quartz in solutions containing the activator and the collector. Attempts have been made to determine the adsorption of barium ion and calcium ion on quartz. The results have only qualitative value as the analytical methods were not adequately precise. Artificial radioactivity and progress in radioactivity detection have introduced a new analytical tool, which can have a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than that of other methods.5-6 In the experimental work described in this paper the radioactive tracers, barium 140 and carbon 14, were employed. Lauric acid was synthesized, having a radioactive carbon atom and was used with Ba140 to study the adsorption of barium and laurate ions from aqueous solution on ground quartz. Flotation tests, using the vacuum flotation technique,4 were run in conjunction with the adsorption experiments. The object of this investigation was to understand better the reaction mechanism of barium activation and soap flotation of quartz. Methods and Materials Quartz Sample Preparation: Lumps of hand picked quartz, washed free of stains, were reduced in size to -20 mesh in laboratory crushers. The product was boiled in concentrated hydrochloric acid to remove the abraded iron. The cleaned product then was ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, using siliceous pebbles, to pass through a 200 mesh screen. The ground product was deslimed by sedimentation at 37 microns. This -200 mesh +400 mesh material was subjected again to boiling with concentrated hydrochloric acid, followed by washing with distilled water and further desliming. The cycle was repeated until no trace of iron could be detected in the wash liquor. During the final washing, the pH of the wash water was checked to insure the complete removal of the acid from the mineral. The quartz then' was rinsed with conductivity water. The resulting product was dried in a drying oven and stored in mason jars. The impurities (spectrographic) were as follows: Al, 0.01 to 0.001 pct; Li, Mg, Mn,, Na, each less than 0.001 pct; Fe and Cu not detected. The specific surface of the quartz sample was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.7 The average of two measurements was 881 sq cm per g. The calculated specific surface for 37/74 micron quartz particles, using a surface factor of 1.96,8 is 900 sq cm per g. This is in good agreement with the measured value of 881 sq cm per g. The influence of strongly chemisorbed solutes such as oxygen and sulphur on the rates of reactions at the gas-liquid iron interface is briefly reviewed. Deductions from recent studies of the rates of decarbur- ization of carbon-saturated liquid iron indicate ideal adsorption behaviour for sulphur over a wide temperature and composition range. This is in fair accord with available infor- mation on surface tensions in the Fe-C-S system. Previously unpublished results for the kinetics of the 14C02-CO exchange reaction are in accord with ideal absorption of oxygen on liquid iron. The derived value for the ideal adsorption coefficient of oxygen at 1550¦C is in quantitative agreement with measurements of the depression of surface tension in the Fe-0 system. Consideration is given to the applicability of such results to the violently agitated systems of steelmaking.

The adsorption behavior of chalcopyrite has been studied at different xanthate concentrations and flow rates in a column apparatus with potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector. Based upon the experiment results an equation of the type: 1/F = K3 + m3C + k2/t.Cm2.fm1 is proposed to account for the experimental data. Among copper minerals an early study on chalcocite by Gaudin and Schuman (Taggart, 1951) is well known for its research on the kinetics of the reaction by conventional method of mass balance between the products of reaction and xanthate consumed. The results were interpreted by the concept of ion exchange adsorption. Szeglowski (1977) conducted measurements on the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on copper polarized to various potentials, the adsorption being measured by radio-tracer techniques. The adsorption in the range -1800 to 700 mv was found to be a reversible physical adsorption. The potential range in which the primary electrode process could lead to surface coverage with a minimum number of product layers was evaluated. "The article presents the results of precious metals leaching using halogen solvents and their precipitation on a sorbent in the process of pressure oxidation. A technology of pressure oxidation – carbon-in-leach treatment (POX-CIL) of refractory sulphide gold-bearing flotation concentrates with the addition of a halogen solvent and a sorbent was developed based on the laboratory studies and pilot plant tests. The technology involves the following steps: oxidation of a flotation concentrate; precious metals dissolution and recovery on a sorbent; precious metals elution; electrolysis of eluates; smelting of cathode precipitates with producing Dore beads. This approach ensures oxidation at least 98% of sulphides and gold of more than 95%. The POX-CIL process have the following patents: a patent of the Eurasian Patent Organization No.017438 “A method of processing materials containing precious metals and sulphides” and a patent of the Russian Federation No.2625146 “A method of precious metals recovery from refractory sulphide gold-bearing materials”.INTRODUCTION Gold-bearing ores are classified as readily amenable to cyanidation, or non-refractory, and not readily amenable to cyanidation, or refractory [1]. Special attention should be given to the three most common technological types of gold-bearing ore materials, according to the Irgiredmet’s classification: pyrite-arsenopyrite ores with finely disseminated gold locked in sulphides (physical depression of gold in cyanidation process); cupriferous gold-bearing ores, when cyanidation comes along with chemical depression of gold by mineral compounds (cyanisides); carbonaceous ores showing higher sorption activity to precious metals dissolved in cyanide. Direct cyanidation of refractory sulphide gold-bearing materials does not provide high recovery of precious metals. There are the following methods of refractory gold-bearing ores and concentrates preparation to subsequent gold recovery: roasting, fine grinding, bacterial and pressure oxidation (POX) [2]. Existing POX-cyanidation flowsheets involve high costs due to a large amount of process operations and using expensive and environmentally hazardous sodium cyanide."

"One of the most important advances in the world gold metallurgy is the introduction of adsorption technologies for processing of ores and concentrates. «Adsorbent-In-Pulp» process allows to eliminate pulp filtration that is especially important during processing of clay and slime bearing ores. “Adsorbent-In-Leach” process is one of the ways for processing of preg-robbing (carbonaceous) products. High efficiency, increased metals recovery, decrease in capital and operational costs, possibility of easy control and adjustment are the advantages of adsorption processes. Anion-exchange resins and activated carbons are used as adsorbents. This paper presents Irgiredmet experience on gold adsorption technology using both adsorbents (RIP, RIL, CIP, CIL processes). It includes results of long-term studies of different theoretical and practical issues of adsorption processes. Irgiredmet started development of ion exchange technology (RIP, RIL) in 1964. Laboratory and pilot plant tests were conducted to develop process design criteria for 15 RIP plants of the former USSR. During this test work a great number of newly synthesized resins including strong- and medium-base resins was studied, different types of adsorption feed (ores and concentrates) were tested; some theoretical regularities of adsorption process were investigated; the technology of two stage adsorption for silver gold ore, improved flowsheet for gold elution and resin regeneration, designs of technological equipment for adsorption, elution, electrowinning processes including pulsation columns, electrowinning cells etc. were developed. Irgiredmet took part in commissioning of practically all RIP plants in the former USSR. Due to its efforts RIP process became to be the standard technology. Last Irgiredmet RIP projects include the development of adsorption technology using medium-base resin for the three mines owned by GC Petropavlovsk (Amur region, Russia). The complex of the testworks on activated carbon gold adsorption technology including the search of prospective activated carbons; study on gold adsorption mechanism; development, testing and introduction of process flowsheets and the equipment for their realization was conducted. The original gold elution process was developed. The developed CIP technology was firstly introduced at Lebedinsky gold plant (Yakutia). Now carbon adsorption technology is widely used at Russian gold mines as CIP, CIL, CIC processes. The most relevant example of CIP introduction is Svetlinsky gold plant (Ural, Russia) with capacity 8 Mt of ore/ year."

"In order to study the removal efficiency of Cu2+ from acid mine drainage by prepared bentonite-steel slag composite particles, adsorption experiment was carried out. The composite particles were characterized by X-ray Diffraction analysis technique (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The results show that: the composite particles can release alkali to neutralize the acid of acid mine drainage; the adsorption and chemical precipitation of Cu2+ occurred in the whole reaction process; the removal amount of composite particles on Cu2+ was 9.88 mg/g when the reaction reached equilibrium; the FTIR spectra revealed the existence of surface complexation; the SEM micrographs suggested that the composite particles would continue to adsorb and coagulate Cu2+ after the composite particles surface adsorbing Cu2+ and forming precipitate, namely, there was synergistic reaction of adsorption and coagulation; the XRD patterns further showed the existence of cation exchange and revealed that the states of Cu2+ in the surface of the composite particles was Cu-Si-O mineral phase and CuO(Cu(OH)2) polymerization precipitation. The bentonite-steel slag composite particles which can play a role of adsorption-coagulation synergism are excellent multifunctional green environmental mineral materials to treat acid mine drainage containing heavy metal ions.Introduction It is reported (Zuo and He 2013) that with the rapid development of industry, the world demand for mineral resources is increasing, while the problem of mine environmental pollution is becoming more and more serious due to the large amount of mining. The pollution of mine wastewater has become a global problem, in which acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the most serious waste water. It is also reported (Cong and Zhao 2003) that acid mine drainage containing high concentrations of heavy metals and having low pH value, causing serious negative influence to the mining production and ecological environment. Acid mine drainage is one of the most serious environmental pollution to the mining industry. In recent years, it has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad."

The flotation response to amine collector and its adsorption on the mineral surface was studied as a function of pH and collector concentration. The flotation response increased in the order anorthite + intermediate plagih clases + albite, while adsorption of amine obeyed the Freundlich equation r = A.Cn. This adsorption is proposg to be due to a covalent bonding between the AlOH surface pups of the plagioclase altered outer layer and the amino group of the collector. Finally, the study showed thatmtial dissolution of the solid phase provides the necessary conditions for amine attachment on the mineral particles and consequent flotation.

"In this study, copper adsorption by orange peel which was chemically treated with sodium hydroxide was investigated. The morphological and chemical characteristics of the adsorbent were evaluated by spectroscopy and N2-adsorption techniques. Equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were obtained and the effects of solutions pH, adsorbent concentrations and temperature were studied in batch experiments. Equilibrium was well described by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and kinetics was found to fit pseudo-second order type adsorptions kinetics. According to the Langmuir equation, the maximum adsorption capacities (qm) for Cu(II) was 50.25 mg·g-1 at pH 5.3. With the temperature increased from 16 to 60°C, copper removal decreased. The loaded adsorbent was regenerated using HCl solution and could be used repeatedly at five cycles with little loss of adsorption capacity. The results show additional chemical treatment of the adsorbent by NaOH, is favor of improving the adsorption capacity. Introduction Increased use of metals and chemicals in manufacture industries has resulted in generation of large quantities of effluent that contains high level of toxic heavy metals and it poses environmental-disposal problems due to its non-degradable, persistence nature and accumulation throughout the food chain [1, 2]. Copper is known to be a commonly used heavy metal. This metal, which found many useful applications in our life, is very harmful if charged into natural water resources and may pose finally a serious health hazard. Many methods, such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis and adsorption, etc., have been used for heavy metal ions removal from various aqueous solutions. In recent years, there has been considerable interests in use of biological materials including algae, bacteria, fungi, agricultural by-products and residues as adsorbents to remove toxic metals from aqueous solutions by adsorption [3-8]. Adsorption process has been extensively used to remove copper from aquatic medium using low cost adsorbents such as peanut husks [9], plant materials [10] and cellulose materials [11]. Among them, agricultural by-products and biomass are relatively cheap and show very high adsorption capacities. However, to apply untreated agricultural by-products as adsorbents has the disadvantages such as low adsorption capacity, high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological chemical demand (BOD) as well as total organic carbon (TOC), due to the release of soluble organic compounds contained in the plant materials such as lignin, tannin, pectin and cellulose, into the solutions [12-14]."

The early work of Terzaghi1 showed that the true stress state of a rock can be expressed by the principle of effective stress. This principle states that effective stress is equal to total applied stress minus the pore pressure. Since the introduction of this principle, a great effort has been made to measure the pore pressure of rocks so that the true stress state can be determined. For clean, permeable sandstones, it is usually found that the effective stress principle can easily be applied. Direct measurement of the pore pressure is achieved with a hydraulic pressure device and the effective stress state thereby computed. However, for fine-grained rocks which contain large amounts of clay (referred to herein as shales), pore pressure measurements are usually quite difficult because of the adsorptive forces of the clay platelets, which produce negative internal pressures. No suitable device is known for measuring internal pressures of dry shales; the effective stress approach is therefore not feasible and data are usually presented in another form. As an example, data from compressive strength tests are presented as a function of rock wetness, rather than effective confining stress. The work of Belopoloskii2 and Colback and Wiid3 are examples of such data. It was pointed out by Lambe and Whitman4 that a better way must be found to express the effective stress of argillaceous rocks. The information presented herein is an attempt to fill that need. Various authors have been able to measure moderate negative pore pressures (0-240 psi) within rather wet, argillaceous rocks by means of various pore pressure devices. In 1961 Lambe5 resented information which shows that pore pressures in argillaceous rocks are indeed negative ; he presented values of suction pressure as low as - 14 psi. Likewise,

This paper describes a method for the determination of traces of rare earths using energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) after preconcentration of their oxine complexes onto activated carbon. Various parameters that influence adsorptive preconcentration of rare earths onto activated carbon viz. pH, amounts of activated carbon and oxine, time of stirring and aqueous phase volume were systematically studied. A numerical method based on simple least square procedure using fifth order polynomial with 25 consecutive values was developed for smoothing and differentiation of EDXRF data which was previously digitized and averaged. First order derivative EDXRF in conjunction with adsorptive preconcentration on activated carbon enables to determine as low as 10 ppb of each of individual rare earth elements.

Novel bio-adsorbent gel was prepared by immobilizing functional groups of glycidyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, a kind of quaternary ammonium chloride, onto polymer matrices of persimmon extract for the recovery of precious metals such as palladium(II) and platinum(IV) from chloride media. It was found that this adsorption gel exhibits high selectivity to gold(III), palladium(II) and platinum(IV) over base metals such as copper(II) and iron(III) while crude persimmon extract, the feed material, exhibits high selectivity only for gold(III). From the adsorption isotherms study, the maximum adsorption capacities for gold(III), palladium(II) and platinum(IV) were evaluated as 3.30, 1.67 and 1.00 mol/kg, respectively. Those for palladium(II) and platinum(IV) are higher than those of simple quaternary ammonium chloride type of chemically modified persimmon tannin gel and commercially available anion exchange resin.

Low grade iron ore with phosphorus (LGIOWP), a raw and wasted industrial solid material was used as an adsorbent to remove Pb(II) from wastewater. The effects of initial pH value, adsorptive time, initial Pb(II) concentration, adsorptive temperature and LGIOWP dosage on the Pb(II) removal efficiency were studied. The results show that the Pb(II) removal efficiencies exceed 99.4% and Pb(II) concentrations are less than 0.30 mg/L under the conditions of pH value 7.0, adsorptive temperature 50 oC, adsorptive time 30 min, initial Pb(II) concentration 100 mg/L, particle size <0.25 mm, adsorbent dosage 5 g/L and stirring speed 260 r/min. After Pb(II) removal reaction, the Pb(II) concentrations of wastewater completely accord with the requirement of national discharge standards of pollutants from lead and zinc industries (GB 25466-2010) (TPb= 0.5 mg/L) in China. Therefore, it can be concluded that LGIOWP is a new low-cost adsorbent which is suitable for the adsorption of Pb(II) from wastewater.

Medidas de adsorção, tensão superficial e potencial zeta (PZ) são as ferramentas mais usadas para entender os fenômenos interfaciais e, consequentemente, os aspectos químicos envolvidos nos processos de flotação. No presente trabalho avaliou-se a adsorção dos coletores oleato de sódio (OLS) e dodecilamina (DDA) em hematita e quartzo, respectivamente, a partir da medida indireta da adsorção dos reagentes baseada em determinações das tensões superficiais das soluções residuais dos coletores após adsorção. Mediu-se também o potencial zeta dos minerais estudados em função da concentração dos coletores. As medidas indicaram que ocorreu a adsorção. Em relação à hematita os resultados sugerem a ocorrência de adsorção química. Para os ensaios realizados variando-se o tempo de adsorção, observou-se o aumento na adsorção de OLS sobre a hematita em função do tempo. Para o sistema quartzo-dodecilamina os resultados não apresentaram tendência quanto à influência do tempo na adsorção. Esse comportamento sugere que a cinética de adsorção de dodecilamina sobre o quartzo é mais rápida, ocorrendo adsorção nos primeiros instantes de contato entre a solução e o mineral.

Foi notado que o rejeito originado a partir do beneficiamento do caulim é rico em silico-aluminatos, apresentando assim potencial em processo de adsorção. O presente trabalho consiste em avaliar o potencial adsortivo do rejeito do caulim quimicamente tratado. Foi utilizado o corante de azul de metileno (AM) em solução aquosa para se ter o conhecimento de adsorção do rejeito de caulim in natura e calcinado a 700ºC onde ambos foram submetidos a uma ativação química com H2SO4. Após o equilíbrio da amostra do rejeito do caulim junto ao azul de metileno, suas concentrações foram determinadas por espectrofotometria. Os resultados preliminares comprovam que o rejeito apresenta uma boa capacidade adsortiva para concentração de até 50,00 mg/L de AM, demostrando, potencial para ser utilizado na remoção de corantes em tratamento de afluentes.

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative-Metal Mining Sector (ADTI-MMS) has established a Pit Lake Committee to enhance the science and understanding for the long-term management of pit lakes. Participation in this new committee is from members of federal and state agencies, industry, and academia, including numerous individuals representing 10 states. Work has begun on a pit lake literature search and review, database, classification, and sampling and monitoring procedures document. Coordination with the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) has been established. Future work will include preparing a prediction and assumption verification document, a report identifying variables upon which water quality is dependent, and an applied remediation technologies document, including an evaluation of the effects of backfilling.

In mining operations, basic drone applications such as pre- and post-blast photo comparisons, blast video recordings, and sample-based fragmentation analysis are often used to assess blast performance. However, these methods lack the depth needed for comprehensive evaluations, leading to suboptimal results. This study explores the innovative integration of drone mapping technology with artificial intelligence (AI) at the Martabe Gold Mine in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, to address these limitations. High-resolution drones and ground control points (GCPs) are utilized to create detailed orthomosaic maps, and advanced AI algorithms are applied to enhance the accuracy of blast performance insights. Field experiments reveal substantial improvements in comprehensive blast performance evaluations through this integrated approach. Enhancements include improved pre- and post-blast evaluations, AI collar detection, fragmentation size measurements, heave muckpile profiles, cast material measurements, floor prediction models, and muck pile topography volume, which is vital for ore tonnage predictions. Notably, this method achieves an average volume accuracy of 1% compared to light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology. While LiDAR is known for its precision, the drone-based method offers a highly accurate, cost-effective, and user-friendly alternative suitable for mining applications. Despite LiDAR's superior precision, our approach provides a practical solution due to its accessibility and ease of implementation. In conclusion, the integration of advanced drone mapping and AI technologies has the potential to revolutionize blasting operations. By addressing the limitations of previous methods, this approach meets the evolving needs of the mining industry and sets new standards for accuracy and effectiveness in blast performance assessment. The combination of high-spectral drone images and AI-based software analysis demonstrated nearly 99% accuracy in ore tonnage prediction models compared to LiDAR, showcasing its promising capabilities.

Many leading copper and other mineral processors have rapidly adopted advanced controls in last 5-10 years. Almost 600 multivariable predictive controls have been installed in mineral processing, and almost 50% of those are in copper concentrator plants. In most cases, mineral processors rely on 3rd party support to implement these advanced technologies. One challenge facing advanced control user is the selection providers and services for these technologies. The trend has been towards the use of multivariable predictive control and use of technology provider’s services. This paper will discuss status of advanced control, and the merging trends in the mining industry. A review will be presented of how advanced control is being applied in the mining industry over the last decade, and how user challenges are being overcome. Next the emerging uses of multivariable predictive control (such as multi/inter-unit optimization), focusing on the latest trends in concentrator plants. Finally, a review will be made of emerging technology advances in the that can be advantageous to mineral processors. INTRODUCTION Review of advanced control in mineral processing Advanced controls are serving an increasing role to improve processing plant operations and profitability. As advanced control is being installed into more mining processing plants such as copper concentrators, many of these plants are concerned about the selection technologies and vendors to support the installation and maintenance of these controls. In a study by Jonas and Craw (2011), they found that most new users have not had prior experience with advanced controls. It is the author’s experience of almost 30 years in advanced controls that most mineral processers considering advanced controls can benefit from better understanding of the technologies and their support requirements.

"Data handling is an important step in the development of a simulator of a mineral processing circuit. The model requires representative data of the scenario to be modeled. The model development involves protocols that must be followed very closely to complete a successful project.Data handling of large and diverse datasets (metallurgical test results, geological data, mining models, historical data, etc.) is a key element of the model. The information needs to be processed, reconciled, interpreted, modeled and presented to support the design or the optimization of a mineral processing plant.Best practice recommends that teams from different disciplines (such as mining, metallurgy, geology and environmental) interact to define the most important variables that could influence the simulator. For example by adopting a geometallurgical approach in the earlier stages of the project, it is possible to consolidate the number of main ore rock types in a testwork program (saving money and time) by involving geologists and metallurgists in the sample selection and data interpretation.Planning the development of a model involves an understanding of the software capabilities but also the limitations and the magnitude of the data required to calibrate the model in case of changes in the project.A successful model requires a deep understanding of the circuit to be modeled and thus plant personnel should be considered as members of the team.This paper describes the use of the "state of the art" tools for data analysis, simulation and optimization; and shows three practical examples of the use those tools in the design of mineral processing plants."

"With the aim to mitigate excavation risks and reduce the costs caused by tunnel boring machine (TBM) stoppage when tunneling under uncertain soil conditions, prediction ahead of the tunnel face has become an increasing interest in the tunneling community. Our research topic is concerned with developing effective concepts for nondestructive identification of geological anomalies ahead of the tunnel face by waveform inversion of reflected tunnel seismic waves. The authors demonstrate that this new technique is promising in providing tunnel engineers with an accurate image of the geological situation that the TBM is going to encounter thanks to the waveforms’ rich information about the geological structure that affects propagation, reflection/refraction and mode conversion behavior of the elastic waves. By setting up a 2-dimensional numerical model for simulation of tunnel seismic wave propagation influenced by a dip layer change ahead of the tunnel face, the authors show that the waveform misfit to be minimized by the inversion process is highly multimodal and therefore propose a hybrid stochastic optimization method that can quickly and robustly converge to the global minimum. DEVELOPMENTS IN TUNNEL ADVANCE EXPLORATION Conventional site investigation by drilling boreholes helps to draw a general image of geological structures along the borehole axes but that image is likely to misrepresent the detailed geological structure due to limited sampled locations. Due to high costs and restricted boring space which deep tunneling and tunneling under urban areas encounter, many industrial and academic research groups have had great interest in developing nondestructive ahead of the tunnel face prediction systems. That means only excitation sources and receiving sensors, which are usually placed on the ground surface or on the side walls or on the cutter head of the TBM, are used for acquisition of the measurement data. The recorded signals in the form of seismic or electromagnetic/ electrical waves, which travel through the geological structure or are reflected back from it, hold the signature of the geological structure of concern, such as geological layer changes, fault zones, erratic rocks, boulders, construction remnants, etc., and therefore can be used to reconstruct the spatial and material properties of those hidden geological structures. Most common nondestructive ahead-of-tunnel investigation systems to date are based on interpretation of reflected elastic/ acoustic waves (seismic waves) and analysis of electromagnetic/ electrical resistivity signals (Mooney et al. 2012). However, due to insufficient penetration depth and spread of signals generated by radar and geoelectric sources, the use of seismic waves for ahead of the tunnel face prediction (tunnel reconnaissance) is more preferable (Kneib et al. 2000; Bohlen et al. 2007)."
