This paper discusses the process involved in developing an optimum method of treating and removing heavy metals from water that have leached out from the native rock -prior to discharge back into the environment. Also designed into the system is a manner to stabilize the metals removed as a precipitate, so that they can be disposed of as a non-hazardous waste.

Exploring new polymetallic processes, integrating primary and recycled materials, means utilising the uncharted areas within the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Al-Mg-Si-O (major) – Cr-Na (slagging) – As-Sn-Sb- Bi-Ag-Au-Ni-Co (minor) slag-solids-metal-matte-speiss-sulfate system. This requires extensive integrated experimental and thermodynamic modelling study, which is underway at PyroSearch at the University of Queensland (UQ).

A LARGE proportion of the coke used is made in the by-product oven from the high-volatile coals mined in the adjacent district. At the beginning it was feared good by-product blast-furnace coke could not be made with our coals. By experimenting with various mixtures of coals, coking time, oven design, and coking temperatures, much has already been accomplished. The results show that a hard, dense coke, not easily broken by handling, can be produced. In its present state it is not all that could be desired, but it is being constantly improved. Such coke has been used alone as the fuel on several of the blast furnaces producing the highest daily production in the Pittsburgh district. Many of the coals in the Pittsburgh district when coked in the by-product oven yield a gas which contains a high percentage of sulfur, which is objection- able for many metallurgical operations. As this fuel is gradually replacing the ideal fuel, natural gas, which is becoming less plentiful, studies are being made of the best methods for purification. Some metallurgists believe sulfur to be a very injurious element in steel. Recent investigations by Government bureaus, scientific bodies and private firms, seem to indicate that a reasonable amount of sulfur may exist in steel without detriment. Changes in the ore types available and increased environmental concern have created a demand for an alternative technology to cyanide for the extraction of gold from ore. Great Lakes Chemical Corporation (Great Lakes) believes that halogen chemistry, in particular bromine chemistry, is the best available alternative to cyanide for gold extraction. Great Lakes is a Fortune 500 chemical company with sales of approximately one billion dollars per year. Great Lakes extracts elemental bromine from naturally occurring brines in Southern Arkansas. Great Lakes has developed a family of proprietary bromine compounds to aid in the extraction of gold. In addition to proprietary bromine compounds for gold extraction, Great Lakes has developed a method of recycling bromide ion in the leach circuit. Various recovery methods, including ion exchange and solvent , extraction are currently being studied.

"Column and other non-conventional flotation approaches continue to provide benefits where conventional flotation processes have exhibited limited success. This is particularly evident with respect to flotation of ultrafine and coarse particles. Advancements in air sparging technology have provided the ability to produce finer bubbles than previously possible. The generation of finer bubbles coupled with the froth washing capabilities of a flotation column has demonstrated improvements in ultrafine particle recovery while simultaneously producing a high-grade float product. On the other side of the spectrum, the use of these sparging technologies while applying flotation fundamentals to a fluidized-bed reactor has increased the maximum floatable particle size up to and in excess of 3 mm. Benefits of higher recoveries and reduced reagent consumption have resulted from the use of these technologies. An additional benefit includes a reduction in plant grinding requirements. As such, this paper describes the application of Cavitation-Tube sparger technology and fluidized-bed flotation (HydroFloat). A review of data from industrial and pilot-scale applications is also provided.INTRODUCTIONConventional (mechanical) froth flotation is considered the workhorse of the minerals processing industry. This low-cost process makes it possible to selectively recover minerals by exploiting the difference in surface characteristics (e.g., wettability) of the valuable component and the waste material. Unfortunately, the upper particle size limit for flotation rarely exceeds 0.600 mm, and is typically maintained at less than 0.300 mm for most industrial applications. For many commercial base metal plants, the particle size range for optimum recovery is typically between 0.01 and 0.1 mm (Lynch et al., 1981). This finding is not novel. In fact, the effect of particle size on flotation recovery was studied as early as 1931 by Gaudin et al. who showed that coarse (+0.250 mm) and extremely fine particles (-0.010 mm) are more difficult to recover than particles of an intermediate size. The loss of recovery is due to inherent limitations associated with the flotation process, including bubble-particle adhesion and collision, detachment, buoyancy, and transport."

De Nora, a global leader in the development, manufacture and sale of all DSA® anodes based on titanium coated with mixed metal oxide (MMO) for electrochemical processes will present key advancements made to Self-Protected Anodes (SPA) for metal electrowinning. (DSA® is a registered trademark of Industrie De Nora S.p.A., Italy). In 2017 pre-commercial demonstration cells were operated in industrial environment. The program’s focus was to fully demonstrate the SPA anode’s superior mechanical and electrochemical robustness during normal and induced dendrite shorting occurrences while providing quality of plating in commercial operation. De Nora specialists focus on key components, in particular the engineering of the self-protection system, DSA® anodes and catalyst formulation capable to cope with high levels of pollutants while providing long service life in the meantime. Results of field trials confirmed the expected anode performance and enabled the selection of the most suitable “SPA” structure, based on resistive protective elements. Summarizing the economic benefits to copper electrowinning tankhouse operation with De Nora’s self- protected all DSA® anodes are; Double-digits power savings Cobalt-free electrolyte operations Minimal dendrite shorting damage incurred at the SPA anode Smoother, uniform cathode deposits with tangible improvement on current efficiency Tankhouse operations producing lead-free copper quality cathodes, in addition to elimination of lead waste for improved operator health and environment. INTRODUCTION De Nora’s engineered “Value Technology Package” (“VTP”) for electrowinning, consisting of our DSA® anodes coated with mixed metal oxide specifically formulated for copper electrowinning in conjunction with an advanced self-protected full titanium anode (“SPA”), underwent an intense field qualification program, inclusive of the behavior under massive short-circuits as part of the field investigation, with the goal to select and appoint the ultimate design configuration of “SPA”. "Dwindling commodity prices are forcing today’s mining operations to increase output. Sometimes the solution is to upgrade the existing infrastructure; however, in most cases it has to be achieved with the same or reduced workforce and with the same equipment capacity through improved process efficiency and higher uptime.Measure, Manage and Improveis the mantra for this years’ Mill Operators’ Conference and while this in most cases relates to the above process efficiency, Siemens has set its focus on the availability and uptime aspect since unscheduled downtime is one of the biggest threats to any grinding operation. Pinion misalignments, resonance, unbalance and bearing and gear meshing faults in geared trains, as well as long-term changes in the condition of the mechanical components or structures and auxiliary systems in gearless systems are the main reasons for unscheduled downtimes in today’s mill drive trains. Our paper outlines the efforts that have gone into adapting conventional condition monitoring methods in conventional, pinion driven mill drive trains as well as gearless systems to capture the gradual deterioration of wearing parts or structural changes in the drive train not only on fixed speed application but also on variable speed applications with multiple operating points. The paper further explores the use of condition monitoring systems as a tool to assess spare thermal motor capacity to potentially push equipment beyond its nameplate rating, along with the process that was followed to correlate measured frequency spectra and envelopes to ambient and load data to understand the kinematics of the drive train.Citation:Neurohr, M, Stratton, S and Roesch, T, 2016. Frothers play a crucial role in sulphide and PGM ore flotation recovery, and AECI Mining Chemicals studies on PGM ores have shown significant flotation kinetic increases with the optimal frother-collector combinations. Using Senfroth 200 as the industry baseline, remarkable kinetic increases were observed with AECI Mining Chemicals developed frothers in the first concentrate. Even in the worst-case scenarios, 4E PGM recovery increased by 5% at a slightly higher concentrate grade. It is important not to limit frother dosage to a fixed value. Instead, enough frother should be added to maintain a stable bench float, measuring the dosages by frother volume before and after tests. Frothers can be specialized blends and their importance should not be underestimated. The results produced by formulating and innovating frothers to address specific industry challenges have been encouraging. Testing a frother on a plant scale does not have to be as daunting as with collectors, enabling the identification of the best frother-collector combinations at an industrial scale. AECI Mining Chemicals bench scale testwork has motivated plant-scale trials that have successfully transitioned to commercialization. This paper compares the results from metallurgical and froth stability tests and shows that occasionally frothers that have a less stable froth can have improved valuable mineral recoveries, while still exhibiting better drainage for reduced entrainment and mass pull. It was shown that caution should be used when relying only on simplified froth stability tests in the evaluation of new frothers.

Materials and manufacturing processing technologies have played an important role in the development and capabilities of nearly all manmade products. Market drivers for fuel efficient, low cost, environmentally friendly, more capable transportation has given rise to significant materials challenges and subsequent developments. The rate of improvement and implementation of new commercial products can be limited by the rate of new materials and process technology development and qualification. As many materials are being designed for unique requirements and even location-specific unique properties, the implementation of tools and methods to enable rapid characterization and validation of material definitions and design systems must also be accelerated. A review of new integrated material, manufacturing process and component designs, engineering processes and emerging tools and methods will be discussed. The linkage of computational materials science and engineering into component design will also be discussed along with the challenges and opportunities for further growth and application of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME).

Seismic tomographic imaging, based on the same principles as a medical CAT Scan (Computer-Aided-Tomography). has been used for many years in the oil industry for large-scale subsurface stratigraphic characterization. and has most recently been applied to various structure- and stress-related problems in the coal industry. New developments in signal processing have greatly enhanced the speed, resolution, and range of applications of topographic imaging in underground settings, and recent innovations in data acquisition hardware have further increased data reliability and repeatability. Whereas past structure mapping applications relied on Seismic velocity and/or attenuation tomopraphy within an enclosed seismic source gram receiver array, recent developments in "True Reflective Tomography- (TRT TM) have expanded the application of this technology considerably. For example, in-seam TRT TM seismic reflection tray now he used to image structure, and/or old workings from one general location in the mine face areas of mains and panel developments) well ahead of planned developments largely eliminating the need to probe-hole drill on regular intervals. This new reflective technology bas also been combined with traditional cross-hole seismic tomography-providing a comprehensive, powerful tool for velocity attenuation. and reflective imagine utilizing the same source/receiver array data sets (borehole-to-borehole. borehole-to-entry and entry-to-entry). These new developments in data acquisition and image processing have greatly expanded the variety of applications for tomographic site characterization allowing the mine operator considerable flexibility to cost-effectively characterize previously inaccessible areas of the property. This paper presents examples of 2-D and 3-D .seismic topographic imaging applied to (1) the location of old works in Appalachian room-and-pillar operations and (2) the identification of anomalous zones ahead of mining/tunneling developments these applications demonstrate the state-of-the-art in seismic ground imaging using velocity, attenuation. aril reflection techniques land combinations thereon, and further illustrate the flexibility of data acquisition from a variety of tinning arid tunneling settings. Recent examples are presented from projects in the United States and Europe.

Copper concentrates have wide application in global smelting operations, comprising primarily of chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) as the principal mineral, accompanied by chalcocite (Cu2S) and bornite (Cu5FeS4) as secondary copper-bearing minerals. However, these concentrates frequently harbor detrimental impurities, notably fluorine ions, which can cause various complications during the smelting process. Moreover, an elevated fluorine content in copper concentrates may entail financial penalties and sales constraints. This review conducts a comprehensive analysis of existing methods for the removal of fluorine, presenting a nuanced assessment of their merits and demerits. It also provides valuable insights into the current landscape of fluorine elimination from copper concentrates and pinpoints pivotal areas warranting future investigation. This review endeavors to serve as a pragmatic resource for researchers and industry professionals operating within this domain.

"As mine operators continuously look for ways to improve functionality and increase the capacity of their facilities, existing process equipment is often pushed to and past its designed limitations. As a result, equipment manufacturers are asked for economical solutions to meet redefined processing needs. Newmont Mining in Nevada was faced with such a need in its carbon-in-leach (CIL) train. In a collaborative effort between Newmont and Derrick Corp., tests were conceived to assess the viability of drop-in replacement screens using a three-dimensional screen panel. The synthetic pyramid screen panel was designed to increase flux while maintaining the existing equipment footprint. The test is the end result of an ongoing research and development project that Derrick undertook in an effort to refine and upgrade its urethane screening media. The application of this new screening media is presented for this CIL application along with future plans to implement the technology in trash, safety, carbon dewatering, carbon sizing and other scalping applications.In spring 2014, Process Machinery Associates (PMA), Derrick’s local area representative, met with Newmont to discuss the operation of the in tank screens in the CIL train at Twin Creeks, near Golconda, NV. The process was originally designed for about 12+ kt/d (13,000+ stpd) but the throughput has been steadily rising since the plant was commissioned. Newmont now requires 14.5 kt/d (16,000 stpd) to be processed. The original screens were running at their maximum capacity, and Newmont required additional screening capacity to continue the upward trend in production.Physical separation by use of screening is one of mineral processing’s oldest methods. Screening media can be prone to blinding and pegging, and the necessary support structures required for finer apertures result in smaller open areas. Therefore, more screening area generally requires larger panels and, thus, larger machines, screening media that does not blind or a combination of both.In an effort to avoid larger machines, Derrick had been working on a revolutionary threedimensional panel that would add nonblinding screen area in the same footprint of an existing machine. Alpha testing of the new screen panels began at Newmont Mill 2/5 in July of 2013. It was still occurring when PMA approached Twin Creeks about beta testing a refined machine and pyramid panel. After presenting the initial results, Twin Creeks determined that an upgraded machine and pyramid panels would be a possible solution to meet production needs. The testing of a machine eliminated the risk of capital costs to Newmont and provided Derrick the opportunity to obtain additional data."

Since the advent of longwall mining, various methods and materials have been used during relocation to control the intrusion of the gob in the shield/panline area. (figure 1) Controlling this gob is critical to ensuring a safe, speedy, and productive longwall move. An uncontrolled gob can cause a number of problems, from increased worker exposure to entrapment of equipment to lost production. With an eye toward worker safety and increased productivity, several different methods have been developed to minimize gob intrusion. This presentation will take a look at the history and development of longwall ?screens? and ?mesh?, from chain-link fencing to high-modulus polyester geogrids. The benefits and advantages of these developments will be defined. Since 1994, longwall coal mines have used polymer geogrids during longwall recovery to control intrusion of gob material into the shield/pan line area. As described by Brandon and Collins (1996) in their paper presented at the 15th Ground Control Conference in Golden, CO., mines had used various forms of support, such as welded wire mesh, chain-link fencing, wooden cribbing, props, and steel cable to accomplish this. These methods worked, but were labor-intensive, slow, and provided varying degrees of gob stoppage. Although a few mines still use chain-ink fencing to control the gob, longwall coal mines have generally settled on polyester geogrids to control gob and roof and these mines have been instrumental in providing input in order to develop and improve these geogrids products. he trend during the past twelve years has been to incorporate stronger grids and to eliminate auxiliary reinforcements, such as steel cables and nylon or polyester webbing. A job that once required heavy steel cables, props, and fencing is now accomplished with strong, lightweight, high-modulus polyester grids. When we discuss high-modulus grids, we refer to the ratio between load and strain, as illustrated in figure 2. These grids are woven or knitted from yarns that have been pre-stressed. When these grids come under load, they pick up the load more quickly. This allows less deformation in, in this case, the mine roof. The same principle applies when these grids are used to control the ribs. With less elongation, the grids will hold rib material tighter, thereby keeping travel ways more open.

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

Haul roads are often permanent unsealed access roads used by heavy haul trucks to transfer minerals. These roads can deteriorate rapidly which results in potholes, deformations and dust. Downer EDI Works has successfully provided efficient solutions to the mining industry to maintain their haul roads. HaulPac as a solution package is a process in which a bituminous emulsion is used to create a stable and durable pavement. The emulsion penetrates the road and binds the particles together, creating a stable base. It also seals the surface and prevents water from penetrating the underneath layers. Bituminous emulsion can increase the strength of the pavement material and decrease the road surface degradation which results in dust suppression. However, the everincreasing price of commodities, the necessity of reducing carbon emissions and the increasing use of autonomous haul trucks have made it vital to invest in novel maintenance solutions that can meet the needs of the mining industry in a cost-effective manner. This paper outlines the benefits of bituminous emulsion in terms of productivity, safety and environment followed by Downer’s approach to evaluate the suitability and to optimise the amount of product. The potential for changing the colour of the treated surface is explored and an initiative that incorporates end-of-life tyres of haul trucks into the pavement is introduced. And finally, an innovative method using artificial intelligence to estimate dust emission is presented.

Antimony removal has become necessary as it is commonly found in precious metal refractory ore bodies. The Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho has recovered metallic electrowon antimony from its argentiferous tetrahedrite (Cu2S'Sb2S3) deposits for over fifty years. Recently, Sunshine conducted an intense research effort to improve and modernize its antimony facility. This paper presents information which was learned about the antimony electrowinning processes and the development of a single¬-electrolyte antimony electrowinning technology. The relevant effects of process variables were investigated. The research results and the relevant chemistries involved in metallic antimony electrowinning will be discussed.

Advanced Flotation Technology is the application driven design of flotation cells to achieve the optimum performance for each type and grind of flotation. This can be applied to roughers, scavengers, cleaners and specialty cells such as those to float hydrocyclone underflows in both primary and regrind circuits in order to reduce overgrinding. Standard, engineered, components are matched to provide mechanism design and cell dimensions for each case according to feed parameters and flotation type. Advances in process control have been achieved with high level controls and operator information data. This has gained a higher degree of understanding of cell operation and ore type being processed. Excellent results of this Advanced Flotation Technology in large scale porphyric copper ore have been achieved and designs through 7000 cu ft (200 m3) are currently available for high capacity concentrators. This paper will detail how flotation cells are more responsive to the exact requirements of the duty specified.
