In the last decade, new developments took place in the area of indoor positioning (or localization). Since the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) cannot be used in underground mines, other technologies are needed for localization. Positioning and communication options today primarily include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Ultra-Wideband (UWB), Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID), etc. Smartphones and tablets currently have an array of sensors and radios, which can provide valuable information to allow indoor localization via various methods. Where mineworkers could keep smartphones with them, they can be highly effective at enabling localization and navigation. Recent applications of these technologies in underground mines have been thoroughly reviewed and examined for the likelihood of their utility for accurate localization where no other means exist. Some critical challenges and gaps that need to be addressed in future research have been identified.

CHEMICAL AN AL YSIS by x-ray emission spectrometry has become increasingly important during the past few years. The method is analogous to optical spectrography ?with x-rays being used instead of light and should not be confused with methods of x-ray diffraction used? for identification of minerals and chemical compounds. X-ray emission spectrometry has many advantages for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Its optimum concentration range is higher than that of the optical spectrograph, and the group of elements which can be detected is not identical to that which can be detected by the optical spectrograph. Elements which can be detected by the x-ray spectrometer are those elements from magnesium (atomic number 12) to uranium (atomic number 92) in the periodic table. The lightest elements in this range have low sensitivities and more specialized equipment is necessary for their detection than for the heavier elements. A large number of applications of x-ray analysis have been directed toward the analysis of ores, metallurgical products, and related materials (see References at end of paper). A more complete bibliography is presented in the Norelco Reporter, Vol. 3, 1956, pp. 37-39. The periodicals Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy are a good source of current articles and references.

"The Falconbridge Limited approach to employing communication equipment is first, to determine what is required in a given situation, second, to evaluate the possible alternatives, third, to select the most suitable hardware and, fourth, to determine what modifications, if any, are required to ensure not only successful implementation but continued low-cost reliability. Two examples are examined.The first situation required remote video monitoring of an acid loadout station. Several alternatives for linking to theremote site were investigated, including hard-wired, slow-scan and microwave. A comparison of these alternatives is shown and an appraisal of the performance of the selected microwave link is presented.The second situation required direct voice contact between the two members of an underground tram crew. Alternative solutions are described and an evaluation of the selected system- SHF portable radios - is presented.ObjectivesIn general, projects must have four main objectives: (1) to improve the safety of its operations; (2) to reduce its operating and capital costs; (3) to increase the efficiency of its work force; and (4) to increase its productivity. ScopeCommunication, when used wisely, can be a good tool to achieve these objectives. Projects can be kept simple using existing technology and adapting it to a particular task. Introduction Trapper mine is a dip-line strip coal mine, located about 10 km (6 miles) southwest of Craig, CO. The mine provides the Craig Generating Station, operated by Colorado-Ute, with about 2 Mt (2.3 million st) of coal annually. The Trapper mine is situated on a hillside that climbs in elevation from 2 to 2.5 km (6500 to 7400 ft) at average grade of 15%. The coal seams dip at about 16% down-grade and they outcrop near the top of the hillside. They exceed maximum stripping depth in 1 to 1.7 km (3500 to 5500 ft) of pit length. Stripping in the three existing pits is performed with three Page 752 23 m3 (30 cu yd) walking draglines. Two of the pits are currently being cast blasted. Until the active cut, the Derringer pit was cast blasted only where the lower mined seam exceeded stripping capabilities and the pit was a single seam operation. Now, a 9-m (30-ft) interburden bench has been incorporated into the stripping plan. This bench protects the first seam of coal from shear when the overburden is cast blasted. The cast blasted section of the 1.6 km (53,000 ft) long pit has been increased from the 457 m (1500 ft) casted previ¬ously to 1 km (3500 ft). High speed films show the coal losses due to shear of the blast are minimal. The pit width in Derringer pit is 61 m (200 ft). This is necessary for efficient spoil side stripping of a relatively thin interburden in the two-seam section of the pit. The Enfield pit is entirely cast blasted. The single seam pit is 46 m (150 ft) wide, 1.1 km (3600 ft) long, and varies from 15 and 46 m (50 and 150 ft) in overburden depth. The Brazilian economy has always presented a strong correlation with the mineral activity. Since colonization days, due to the territorial expansion caused by the explorers search for gold, mining in Brazil became a basic sector of national economy. Currently, the Brazilian mineral sector¹ estimates a 550% production increment (Figure 1A) in the last 10 years, reaching the US$ 50 billion value, reflecting the increased global demand for raw materials from mineral origin. According to the Brazilian Constitution², mineral resources belong to the Federal State and, consequently, their exploitation must be authorized, under penalty of engendering federal crime. Furthermore, activities of this nature are prone to cause environmental degradation such as, but not limited to, deforestation, pollution, soil deterioration and water contamination. The GPEMA represents the forensics group of the Brazilian Federal Police responsible for the technical analysis of traces related to crimes against the environment and consequently, illegal mining cases.

In engineering design of operators? compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment, and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomic principles within the collective design process ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity beyond expectations.

The degree of fragmentation of dispersed systems of brittle materials such as pulverised rock has been described by a fractal dimension i.e. the fragmentation fractal. This fractal dimension represents a power law size-frequency distribution, where, in this case, the size is defined as the square root of the projected area. The existence of a fractal dimension for the number-size distribution, of the progeny of failure event, is direct evidence for scale invariance of the fragmentation process. Since a fractal dimension infers that failure mechanisms operate on all scales it has been suggested that the fractal dimension is a measure of the fracture resistance properties of materials during fragmentation. In order to investigate this a range of rocks of varying fracture toughness were broken under similar levels of impact velocity in the dynamic tensile failure of single particles. The fragmentation fractals determined from the resultant particle populations, of the breakage experiments, were monitored and are discussed.

Accurately modeling and predicting long term mill throughput is one of the challenges facing metallurgists, geologists and mine engineers in their quest to consistently deliver accurate life of mine business plans. Batu Hijau has systematically improved long and short term mill throughput predictions since feasibility and commissioning in 1999. This has been achieved through a combination of ongoing improvement to the geology ore hardness and grade characterisation model, drill and blast optimisation and, by application of these data to model mill throughput. Batu Hijau has demonstrated the ability to consistently estimate long term mill throughput within ±2% accuracy. Aside from reliably predicting expected production rates with the existing plant configuration, this predictive ability provides a solid foundation for identifying operating and design criteria for short term grinding circuit optimisation and future expansions. This paper discusses ongoing throughput prediction model development at Batu Hijau based on geo-metallurgical characterisation. Also discussed are tools used for day to day production performance management. This includes on line "Mine to Mill" variable monitoring to improve operations parameter ecision making and performance assessment.

The Institute of Applied Geology (I.A.G.), a joint project sponsored by the University of the Philippines, the Philippine Bureau of Mines and the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) undertook during 1965-66 a number of field projects in Northern Luzon Island (Fig. 1). These field operations were of a two-fold nature: during approximately six weeks an orientation survey, involving, geology, geophysical surveying, and geochemical prospecting, was conducted over a partly developed, disseminated copper deposit at Sto. Nino (Fig. 1). The Sto. In doing so, they use the entire spectrum of procedures in economic geology and engineering geology to deal with a specific system of orebodies and associated environment. The objectives are established by stages in the life cycle of a mining operation as it goes from a prospect to a development project and on to a mine. THE Magma copper vein trends east-west, dips 70° south, and cuts through a 6000-ft thickness of limestones, quartzites, shale, diabase, and schist. The vein is itself a fault with -a horizontal offset of 500 ft on the formation contacts in the two walls. There are two principal faults of large displacement and numerous smaller steep and flat faults that complicate the prediction of ore occurrence. A study of the geology, its systematic recording to facilitate ready reference, and graphic methods of interpretation of mineralization have aided the exploration, development, and mining of the ore. In making predictions of the distribution of mineable ore bodies and their shape in critical areas, studies are made of "mineralization contours" and "mineralization trends," which are developed on a longitudinal section of the vein from variations in the concentration of the combined base metal content as shown by assays of available openings in the mine.

The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes.
