This mine, known also as the A very Mine, is situated on Petite Anse Island, Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The island is about four miles from Vermillion Bay, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico, and is one of four islands or hills surrounded by the sea-marsh, as shown in the accompanying map. (Fig. 1.) A fifth, Joe Jefferson's Island, or hill, is some distance from the sea-marsh. These five islands: Belle Isle, Cote Blanche,Grand Cote, Petite Anse and Jefferson, appear to be the tops of submerged hills, and occupy a line having nearly a northwest trend. To the north are a series of hillocks that extend at intervals to the hills of Northern Louisiana, which in turn appear to run into the Ozarks of Arkansas. Anecdotal reports of high rates of congenital malformations and spontaneous abortions at the Shiprock Indian Health Service Hospital in San Juan County, New Mexico prompted an interview survey, obtaining data from families of 26 former uranium miners and 30 controls. Results supported the possibility of increased fetal wastage and congenital malformations. However, definitive conclusions were obviated by methodologic limitations in terms of selection of cases and controls and interviewing technique, as well as very low numbers and lack of statistical significance. The Council of Environmental Quality (1980) published a report which singled out San Juan County, nationally, as having an extra-ordinary high rate of congenital anomalies reported from birth certificates in the years 1973-75. San Juan County is in the northwest corner of New Mexico and includes the northeastern edge of the Navajo Indian Reservation. It has been the site of uranium mining and milling and also of coal mining (Clement Associates, 1980). While much attention has been focused on lung cancer and chronic lung disease as health hazards to uranium miners, virtually no attention has been focused upon possible reproductive effects that may result from exposure to radiation. Could these reports indicate such an additional arena of health effect either on miners or on others living in the vicinity of the mines and mills? The biologic and epidemiologic literature does not lend much support for adverse genetic outcome. The UNSCEAR report (UNSCEAR, 1977) summarizes much of the existing data. For example, on the basis of many animal studies and what has been observed in atom bomb survivers in Japan, it has been estimated that mutation rates resulting from low LET radiation to paternal germ cells would be 60 X 10-6 recessive and 20 X 10-6 dominant mutations per gamete per rad. There would be a five-fold increase in the number of recognizable abortions. The doubling dose for genetic disorders in mice is estimated at 100 rads. The assumption has been that low levels of exposure, such as might be received occupationally from uranium mines and mills or environmentally will produce reproductive effects that would defy distinction from background rates. However, the possibility can not be dismissed. In man, spermatogonia are thought to be three-fold more sensitive than in the mouse. Also, the high LET radiation from alpha particles is as much as 20-fold more effective in inducing changes in meiotic and post meiotic stages of cells, compared with low LET radiation. There is some degree of localization of alpha emitters in testicular tissue after inhalation of radon and radon daughters (Blanchard, R.L. and Moore, J.B., 1971; Pohl, E., 1964). The slopes of doseeffect curves are affected by type radiation and rate of administration. Data on such curves are poorly defined and debated as to whether there may be increased or decreased effect per unit dose at low levels of high LET radiation. Increased rates of aberrations of chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes cultured from uranium miners have been reported (Brandom, W.F., et al., 1978). At cumulative exposures of 100 working level months (WLM) or less, a range of exposure lower than the limit of current occupational standards, the aberrations were increased more than two-fold. Our interest has led us to pursue the question of reproductive effects along three separate paths of inquiry: studies of the secondary sex ratio, cytogenetic study of human sperm, and studies of rates of congenital anomalies. I will present the thrust of our findings, most of which remain preliminary, comment on their interpretation and limitations, and indicate directions needed for future research. The secondary sex ratio is the ratio of males to females at birth. In the U.S., the ratio averages around 1.05. Ratios in blacks are somewhat lower (1.025) than in whites (1.053). For American Indians, the data are less definite. Values from Oklahoma and California are similar to whites (1.05). Southwestern tribes have, as we shall see, varying levels. The theoretical effects on sex ratio resulting from irradiation of the zygote are based on the principles of sex-linked genetics, including differential effects of lethal dominant and recessive mutations on the sex chromosomes, complicated by possible non-disjunctional events. Observations have done little to clarify, confirm or refute the theories. The sex ratio of progeny of survivers of the atomic bomb showed little change (Schull, W.J., Otake, M., and Neel, J.V., 1981). Observations in children of uranium miners having been inconsistent. Most frequently cited is a study of miners in Czechoslovakia (Müller, C., Razicka, L., and Bakstein, J., 1967). Compared with children born to miners prior to the start of mining, the sex ratios of children born after the start of mining were decreased -statistically significant after correcting for birth order. The ratios in first-born children were, before the start of mining, 1.118, and, after the start of mining, .713. In the interview survey at Shiprock, the sex ratio in families of non-miners was 1.03, and in families of miners it was 0.73 (p < .05). Dr. Alan Goodman at the University of New Mexico has studied trends in the sex ratio in the general population in New Mexico and Arizona with particular reference to counties in the Four Corners area and the Navajo Indian Reservation, areas where uranium mining has been active_ His findings (unpublished) are as follows: (1) Beginning in the early 1950&apos;s, there has been a modest, but persistant and statistically significant decline in the secondary sex ratio for the state of New Mexico compared with the U.S., a decline that roughly parallels the emergence of uranium mining in the Grants mineral belt in northwestern New Mexico. (2) Data available for the 11 years since 1969 show that among the five counties with ratios significantly lower than the state

The Kerr-McGee Coal Corporation&apos;s Galatia Mine&apos;s first longwall mining system was implemented on May 3; 1989. Start-up of the longwall face represnted the successful conclusion of an effort begun nearly four years earlier. This paper-presents a case history of the processes that led to the longwall&apos;s implementation, and the subsequent mining of the first 7,900 foot long panel.

ON the afternoon of Feb. 20 of this year a new volcano was born in the center of the State of Michoacan, Mexico, about 100 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. Creation of this new mountain - forming crater began on an almost flat cultivated field at the south margin of a small basin about a mile in diameter and having an altitude of approximately 6800 ft. above sea level. This basin is connected to a gently inclined plain that forms the Parangaricutiro valley, the chief town of this municipality, bearing the same name as the valley, being situated three miles from the site of the new crater. The village of Paracutin, from which the new volcano received its name, is about one mile to the northwest of the crater. From the City of Mexico to the volcano is a distance of 330 miles. The paved highway running from Mexico City to Guadalajara, by way of Toluca and Morelia, is left at Carapan; from here another paved branch highway goes to Uruapan. The town of Paracutin is reached by a narrow dirt road 18 miles from Uruapan and connects with a road leading to Parangaricutiro where horses may be hired for a 40-minute trip to a place where visitors can enjoy a magnificent view of the volcano. It is possible to get within half a mile of the point of eruption in this manner.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

THE CLOSING years of the nineteenth century witnessed a rapid expansion in Phelps Dodge activities in Arizona and other parts of the Southwest and a corresponding decline in its exporting and importing interests in New York. Before the close of another decade, this process had gone so far that the company was committed lock, stock, and barrel to its western undertakings. By 1910 the evolution that began with the tentative investments at Bisbee and Morenci was complete. An enormous increase in the domestic production of iron and copper, which made it increasingly difficult to find markets for imported cargoes of those metals from English mills, accounted in part for this radical shift in Phelps Dodge activities and interests. In the case of tin plate, the change was even more spectacular. In 1890 a seventh of the world&apos;s supply of pig tin passed through the hands of Phelps Dodge agents. The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, 150 km southwest of Ciudad Juarez. The ore deposit was discovered in 1979, and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2400 tpd from an ore reserve of 8.5M tonnes. Grades average about 8 % Zn, 0.5 % Pb, 0.2 % Cu and 50 g Ag per tonne. Substantial inflows of water into the under-ground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark was operated through a joint venture, Minera Bismark, S.A. de C.V., with U.S. and Mexican partners, but since early 1993, it is wholly Mexican-owned and operated.

The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country&apos;s fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world&apos;s zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

METALLIC bismuth was known in the Middle Ages and the name is supposed to come from the German Wismut. The origin of the German name is uncertain. References to bismuth are found in the writings of Valentine, Paracelsus, and Agricola between 1450 and 1550. Early specimens of bismuth were very impure and often were confused with antimony, tin, and zinc. About the middle of the eighteenth century, J. H. Pott, C. J. Geoffroy, and Torbern Bergman succeeded in producing fairly pure bismuth and showed it to be an elementary metal similar in many respects to lead. H. S. Washington has estimated that bismuth occurs in the earth&apos;s crust about as abundantly as tungsten and silver; i.e., to the extent of 10-6 or 10-7 pct. It is found as native metal, both alone and associated with tin, copper, and other metals, and in a large variety of ores. The important ores are the sulfide (bismuthinite), the oxide (bismite), and the carbonates (bismutite and bismutosphaerite) . Other occurrences of bismuth are in the vanadate (pucherite), the selenide (guanajuatite), the telluride (tetradymite), and in many complex sulfides, arsenides, and antimonides. Bismuth minerals have been found in many parts of the world but very few of the bismuth deposits have been of economic value, the oxide ores from parts of China being the exception. The major portion of the bismuth production of today is the so-called by- product bismuth. INTRODUCTION ARSENIC, antimony and phosphorus are now used in the brass industry as standard inhibitors in preventing dezincification in [ ] condenser tubes. This subject has been thoroughly covered by Barry,1 who described the testing procedure by total immersion of suitable specimens in a I per cent cupric chloride solution at definite temperatures. Effects of dezincification were then determined by loss in tensile strength and elongation of the test specimens after definite periods of immersion. In the crystallography of the chemical elements as tabulated by William Hume Rothery,2 phosphorus (metallic), arsenic, antimony and bismuth are placed in group V-B and the type of crystal lattice for arsenic, antimony and bismuth is given as rhombohedral. The Metals Handbook3 [ ] lists them as "rhombohedral hexagonal," with the additional notation that for arsenic this is the ordinary form at 20°C.; other modifications known or probable at other temperatures. In view of these statements and of the fact that phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are effective in increasing the resistance to dezincification, it was natural to assume that bismuth would act in the same manner. Effective bismuth removal from flue dust residues has been accomplished for flue dusts from both zinc and copper smelters. Selective dissolution of bismuth, with respect to silver and lead, can be achieved by the proper manipulation of temperature, sulfuric acid addition and sodium chloride addition. Optimum levels of these variables were determined using a response surface technique to maximize the objective function: Y = %Bi/(1 + %Ag). In the case of the flue dust residue from a zinc smelter, which contains bismuth as an impurity (0.05%), 86% bismuth removal can be realized with less than 1% combined silver and lead dissolution. Similarly, in the case of flue dust from a copper smelter, which contains bismuth as a primary constituent (3.3%), 93% bismuth removal was obtained with little dissolution of silver and lead values.

The processing of residues derived from various operations in the mining and metallurgical industry for by-product recovery is becoming more prevalent. A principal target for by-product recovery is flue dust produced by conventional smelting operations. Flue dust from zinc smelters has been processed for many years for the recovery of cadmium (1,2). The cadmium recovery technique which consists of a selective sulfation roast, followed by a water leach and zinc dust cementation, produces a lead cake residue (see chemical analysis in Table I), which consists primarily of lead sulfate.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd.&apos;s Kunitomi Smelter has been treating in the blast furnace copper concentrate containing bismuth. The bismuth is concentrated in the electrostatic precipitator dust and the converter dust. Bismuth contained in the converter dust is leached by a mixture of salt and sulfuric acid, and is then recovered by a cementation process using scrap iron. The bismuth cake thus recovered and the electro- static precipitator dust are reduced to crude bismuth metal which is further refined to a high purity bismuth metal by the pyrometallurgical refining process. Details of this process are elaborated in this report.

"Many tens of thousands of hectares of forested land will be disturbed and reclaimed in the surface mineable Athabasca oil sands area during the next few decades. The surface area disturbed by Syncrude’s Mildred Lake development alone exceeds 10 000 ha to date. It is not clear that reforestation of disturbed areas will best accommodate the aspirations of all stakeholders, particularly traditional users of the land. A five-year research program by Syncrude Canada Limited and the Fort McKay First Nations has examined the feasibility of raising bison on land reclaimed after disturbance by oil sands development. Forage productivity and carrying capacity for bison was comparable to that of grasslands elsewhere in Alberta. Concerns regarding compaction of newly rebuilt soil by bison traffic proved unfounded. Bison demonstrated weight gains typical for ranched bison and calving rates averaged 90%, a value typical for ranched bison. The animal husbandry problems encountered were typical of those occurring on bison ranches elsewhere in Alberta. An economic analysis indicates that a 1000 ha bison ranch on reclaimed land has a net present value that compares very favourably with a similar area supporting commercial forest. Subject to approval by Alberta Environmental Protection, the current research project will be expanded as a pilot commercial ranching venture in order to explore its commercial viability as a business venture by the Fort McKay First Nations. At the same time, measures will be implemented to resolve various regulatory issues associated with commercial bison production in the oil sands area.BackgroundSyncrude Canada Ltd. (Syncrude) is proposing, in its land reclamation strategy, a feature that is, depending on one’s background and perspective, regarded as an innovative approach to land reclamation, a threat to the regional forest industry, a creative response to aboriginal stakeholder concerns, a reneging on reclamation commitments, an opportunity to provide an ongoing economic base for postoil sands regional economy, or an environmentally unsound use of the land. These diverse and sometimes strong reactions have been generated by the proposal to introduce bison, either free-ranging or commercial ranched, to the reclaimed landscape."

This paper deals with the effects of various bit geometric parameters on the failure characteristics of rock material. Improving the rock-cutting efficiency of continuous mining machines has proven to be an interesting research topic during the last few decades. In the current study, an automated rotary rock-cutting simulator, duplicating a continuous miner, was used to study these parameters in the laboratory. The improvement of bit performance in terms of its life, cutting efficiency, dust production and energy consumption has drawn widespread attention. Research has demonstrated that optimizing bit parameters can result in efficient fragmentation of rock. Indiana limestone rock material was used in this study. The bit tip angle, bit tip size, bit spacing, depth of cut and cutting velocity of the rotary drum were varied to investigate the failure characteristics. The cutting pressure, penetrating pressure and the depth of cut were monitored on the simulator during the cutting process. Airborne dust and settled dust were measured for each experiment. Then, the specific airborne dust and specific energy were determined for each type of bit. Triaxial tests were carried out to correlate the failure angle of the rock in the static case to the dynamic cutting process failure. The physical and mechanical properties of the rock were also determined to assess their influence on the wear characteristics of each bit.

"The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012.
