Historically, as for most reagents used in flotation, the wide-spread use of dialkyl dithiophosphinates as collectors in practical applications has preceded a detailed scientific understanding of how they work. Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a technologically and commercially important class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu-Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. Plant usage has demonstrated that dithiophosphinates exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive health, safety, and environmental (HSE) profile. Although dithiophosphinates received little attention in the past in the flotation research community, recently, there has been significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamental interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized and explained by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions with various minerals and metals of dithiophosphinate and dithiophosphate analogues brings out some of the subtleties that seemingly minor changes in collector chemistry can make. The critical overview and analysis given here is useful in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important class of compounds. This in turn can provide a basis for the design of studies to advance our understanding of dithiophosphinate flotation performance.

INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation net- works where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution which is preassigned. The problem is a classic one which arises in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for CPPI, the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation network problem become straight- forward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The effect of booster fans on the total air power consumed in a ventilation network are also discussed.

Abstract. Controlled flow is an aspect often desired in mine ventilation. This is normally obtained by using fans and regulators to achieve the required pressure balance in the system. Preference for a certain network layout of these control devices is influenced by technical as well as legal and economic factors. In this study, a model is developed based on an economic criterion by which an optimum layout of fans and regulators for a controlled flow system can be determined. The concept is analo¬gous to the critical path crashing. However, a linear programming package is used to demonstrate the solution procedure for a hypothetical venti¬lation network.

Stress measurement is at the core of most stability design analyses. It is demonstrated that contrary to accepted practice, it is the field measurement, and not the calculated prediction, of stress that requires most examination and review. Since it is not really possible to quantify rockmass properties, the stiffness values used in reduction of stress measurements and in subsequent design analyses (either empirical or numerical modelling) must consider an appropriate range of values.

Determination of fracture toughness using the semi-circular specimen, the chevron edge notch round specimen, the short rod specimen and the cylindrical burst specimen, are critically reviewed. These methods, among all, are the most applicable for fracture toughness determination of rocks. They require minimum machining. Samples are small, and testing procedures are simple. They have a sound analytical basis and allow the fracture toughness to be determined without measurement of fracture length.

This review was initially motivated by the author’s own experience in attempting to reconcile run-of mine production tons with the Coal Resource and Reserve estimation of mineable, in-situ tonnages. The primary scientific measurements and observations that are collected during exploration at the beginning of the value chain will have a profound effect on the future of the mining operation. Due diligence must be exercised during the planning of a new mine and during the life of an existing mine. The comments provided by the technical and economic assessment group of Venmyn Deloitte confirmed the need for this critical review. They found the reporting of Coal Resources in South Africa to be inconsistent. This was particularly problematic in the Waterberg Coalfield in Limpopo Province. In this coalfield there are two types of coal deposit present. The first is comprised of the thick intercalated, cyclic coal and shale/mudstone sequences of the Volksrust Formation. This overlies multiple coal seams within the Vryheid Formation, each of which is thick enough to be extracted as an individual raw coal unit. On the other hand, the interbedded coal and shale seams of the Volksrust Formation require beneficiation to separate the coal from the shale. The review examines practices and methods, investigates alternatives, provides checks and balances, and tests these against actual production reconciliations. In conclusion, the best estimates of the mineable, in-situ tonnage will be obtained from the air-dry raw material density. These estimates should be adjusted afterwards to allow for free moisture content. The adjustments are derived from reconciliation data. The greatest contributing factor to the over-estimation of Reserve tonnages is the moisture content of the raw material. This fluctuates significantly under varying conditions in situ, as well as upon exposure to the natural environment. The air-dried density of the raw material includes inherent (structurally bound) moisture within the matrix. It provides credible tonnage estimations of raw material available while also providing an indication of voids within the volume of material being assessed. The calculated solids percentage can be used to adjust the specific gravity, which is determined via the Archimedes principle. This will supply a representative estimate of the material to be mined.

After reviewing the various approach es,namely, empirical,analytical.observational and numerical, a logical systematic approach is proposed for the estimation of compressive strength of coal pillars. In this approach first,uniaxial compressive strength of coal in pillars is estimated,taking into account the size effect and the effect of discontinuities. Next,the compressive strength of coal pillars is estimated by determining the stress distribution in the pillar and the Bieniawski strength criterion. The results appear to be compatible to the ones obtained by Wilson's method. The traditional pillar design equations give improper answers for deep workings.

Electromagnetic methods used in geo- physical prospecting for conductive ore bodies have proved successful in Canada,Sweden and other countries. In Australia however the depth of weathering generally exceeds 30 metres. This introduces a problem of highly conductive overburden and renders equipment useful elsewhere virtually ineffective. A discussion of several EM prospecting techniques is presented and a new system under development at James Cook University using V.L.F. transmissions capable of indicating changes in impedance (not only highly conducting media) is outlined.

The current state-of-the-art design of mine pillars can be grouped into empirical and numerical design techniques. Numerical design techniques are based on sophisticated computational techniques which analyze the stresses and strains through the interstices of a pillar. Empirical techniques are less exact, but have been widely used, particularly for coal mine pillar design, because of their ease of computation. Over the years numerous empirical equations have been proposed to calculate the ultimate strength of coal mine pillars. This paper presents a review of the various equations which are most frequently utilized and examines the fundamental assumptions, limitations and applicability of the design formulae. The review intends to provide the practicing mining engineer with an understanding of the assumptions and mathematical basis of each equation to aid in the selection of the criteria most applicable to his specific design problems. Recommendations are made of the empirical equations that are presently most acceptable for design.

"The modeling of gas-liquid plumes in steelmaking ladles has been the subject of many investigations. In most studies, the “modified” Froude number, based on the momentum of the injected gas, has been employed to characterize two-phase plumes. This approach has several shortcomings and is critically reviewed in the present work. Based on an extensive review of previous work and theoretical considerations, it is demonstrated that the injected momentum and consequently, the modified Froude number has no significance to gas blowing operations in Ladle Metallurgy. Instead, an approach based on the “plume” Froude number, previously shown by the authors as the proper form for Froude similarity, is extended as a simpler alternative.IntroductionGas injection is central to most Ladle Metallurgy operations. During ladle processing, the steel melt is usually stirred by an inert gas like Argon through porous plug(s) fitted in the bottom of the ladle or a lance inserted deep into the melt. The purging serves several purposes viz., homogenizing the melt, flotation of inclusions, enhancing the rates both of refining reactions and dissolution of alloying elements and promoting inter-phase interactions in the ladle.The topic of gas injection into liquid baths has been the subject of several investigations in the past. A great deal of this work, both experimental and computational, was devoted to describing the structure and properties of two-phase plumes as reviewed recently [1]. Generally, the ascending two-phase mixture is sub-divided into three distinct regions [2]: the jet core, transition and the bubble plume, respectively. The jet region, where the momentum of the injected gas is transferred to the bulk liquid, is also called the ‘momentum region’. In a similar manner, the plume is called the ‘buoyancy region’ where the motion of liquid is caused by the buoyancy force exerted by the bubbles. The proper characterization of these regions is important for the analysis and modeling of stirring operations in Ladle Metallurgy. Although many mathematical correlations exist for this purpose, some issues of theoretical and practical interest to the modeling of gas-liquid plumes need further attention."

Recent research publications in extractive metallurgy were analysed for their stated and self-evident objectives. Over 100 different objectives (not specific to a metal or unit operation) were identified. These were divided into groups of economic, environmental, professional and fundamental significance. Comparisons were made of the objectives adopted in universities, industry and national research organisations. The most common primary and secondary objectives (by a large margin) were "to develop a new process (different chemistry)" and "to determine the effects of variables on a process" respectively. It was concluded that, overall, recent research has been dominated by commercial objectives. Objectives related to thermodynamics and kinetics have been the most common of the fundamental sort. Those related to professional methods in general, sensors and process dynamics, among others, have been largely neglected.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the preparation of high-quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition for the design of polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed. Based on this review it is clear that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces require further systematic study. Specifically, efforts should be made to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral-filler surfaces in greater detail. Also, the effects of mineral-surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena need specific investigation. It is expected that an improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

High-purity quartz (SiO2) is an important material widely used in many industries, including semiconductor technology, telecommunication, and optics. The content and distribution of impurities in quartz significantly affect the processing methods. This paper provides an insightful review on the processing of high-purity quartz, covering the analytical techniques, separation methods, and the critical procedures used to assess the quality of quartz ore. More importantly, the critical review of the thermal phase transition separation method for fine-grained mineral inclusions, micron-grade fluid inclusions, and lattice-bound trace elements is notably opened for the first time. It is proposed that the research field as a monopolized industry would benefit by expounding the critical problems that occur during the preparation of high-purity quartz.

This paper presents analysis of strata behaviour with special reference to convergence and stress variation during an experimental trial of extraction of pillars with cable bolts as major support system in 6.5 - 8.0 m thick coal seam. Critical span for roof falls was estimated through empirical models and also evaluated by numerical models. In situ strata behaviour studies during 1992-96 for about 70 local/major falls revealed inadequacy of the available literature for interpretation and prediction of the roof falls. Convergence acceleration and variation of induced stress based on continuous monitoring data showed distinct anomalies and potential for better understanding of strata mechanics during pillar extraction.

IN 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the "classical "[t] theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ionization" theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,"5 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"6 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.7 Bankoff15 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, all particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid-the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. This theory has been verified experimentally by measurement of the velocity of Brownian movement, and by measurement of the compacting of suspensoid particles under the influence of gravity.2 The originators of the ionization theory found that the addition of various electrolytes to slime pulps caused cessation or commencement of Brownian movement, depending upon the chemical nature of the particle and the electrolyte. This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. Approximately forty years ago, the military services began a realistic investigation of the problems involved with the replacement of high pressure gaseous systems with liquid oxygen systems. The program was temporarily discontinued because of numerous State-of-the-Art problems. Ten years later, interest in the liquid oxygen breathing concept was revived. Initial testing of this concept was completed in 1946. The ensuing years have seen the general acceptance of many cryogenic breathing systems for airborne applications. The inherent features of weight savings (approximately 70%) and space savings (approximately 80%) make it very desirable for high performance military aircraft. A typical aircraft system consists of a storage container with appropriate integrated control valving (the liquid oxygen converter), a heat exchanger, breathing regulator, and oxygen mask. Normally the liquid converter is located in the aircraft wheel well for easy access by ground crew personnel and the breathing regulator is mounted in the cockpit where the pilot can connect his oxygen mask. An aircraft system such as this will provide the pilot with eight hours of breathing oxygen after a 24 hour standby period. Early in 1960, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sought a means of providing a cooling system for their personnel involved in fueling the rockets used in the space program. "Innovation in the minerals industry has been lagging behind comparable industries like oil and gas. An incremental innovation culture that tolerates long lead times between invention and adoption has been exacerbated by a research grant structure that inhibits radical idea generation. Entrepreneurs who can make the link between ore source, technology and finance will cause a shift in innovation culture and open up substantial opportunities in the minerals industry of the future. By extrapolating existing trends in technology within and outside mineral processing, a crystal ball vision of future innovation is shaped with the aim to lower energy and water demand, reduce CO2 emissions, decrease operating and capital costs, reduce environmental impact, and secure a social licence to operate. Advances in nanotechnology, advanced materials and biotechnology will impact mineral processing, but the initiative for technology transfer must come from mineral processors. Laminates of graphene oxide can offer efficient filtration and separation media, while microfluidic devices will be used for desalination, solvent extraction and analysis. Substantial progress is expected on benign lixiviants and separation agents, such as nanoscale supramolecular hosts that can serve as high-capacity, selective and recyclable ligands and sorbents, and solid aminobiphosphonate-based adsorbents. Radical ideas for the recovery of precious metals from non-assayable ores and the generation of energy above unity will be adopted in selected minerals projects. In-situ mining in which microbes generate lixiviants at mineral surfaces will simplify processing circuits. Specific ores will be subjected to microwave processing and electropulse liberation to enhance recovery. Ultrafine grinding using devices of low energy consumption will be done mainly dry, followed by dry separation. New flotation cells will remove efficiently either coarse particles or ultra-fine particles, with mineral surfaces being modified not just by new reagents but also by selective microbes. Innovation in mineral processing indeed has a bright future."
