Extensive site investigations revealed that abandoned shallow mine workings exist under a site planned for construction of a major new facility. Since the mine voids were susceptible to collapse, they were stabilized by grouting. After completion of the mine remediation, three types of deep foundations (micro-piles, auger-cast piles, and drilled piers) were considered for this site. Micro-piles spread the load via the bond between the pile and the bedrock. Without significant length socketed in rock, the axial load of auger-cast piles and drilled piers has to be concentrated on end bearing. Although spreading the load is preferable in this environment, economic consideration dictated the choice of drilled piers for construction.

Synthesis of alumina-mullite-silicon carbide composite (Al2O3-Al6Si2O13-SiCw) was obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and two different silica sources. The carbothermal reduction was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of argon gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina, mullite and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of adding two different silica sources of rice husk ash and silica powder to the mixture of kaolin and activated carbon were investigated. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3- Al6Si2O13-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology.

In-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT ?IR/IRS) has been extended to study oleate adsorption at a calcite surface. The birefringent and transmission limitations of calcite were overcome by using an appropriately designed optical setup and a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. An adsorption isotherm was determined at pH 9.2 and room temperature. Comparison with the fluorite/oleate adsorption isotherm determined by the same technique indicates that oleate abstraction by calcite can be as much as one order of magnitude larger than that by fluorite. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of the fluorite/oleate surface is greater for equivalent adsorption densities as indicated by contact angle measurements and flotation results. The monolayer region has been confirmed to be chemisorbed oleate at both calcite and fluorite surfaces. Furthermore, multichannel laser Raman spectroscopy (MLRS) showed that chemisorbed oleate at the fluorite surface undergoes a double-bond reaction with oxygen to form an epoxide/polyether complex. Such a reaction, however, could not be detected at the calcite surface. These phenomena are discussed in terms of the intrinsic surface properties of the mineral systems as well as the adsorption density and the cross-linking/polymerization reaction of the adsorbed oleate film.

The present paper describes a number of experiments with fine silver, coin silver, silver-cadmium oxide and silver-nickei-copper compacts, prepared by powder metallurgical methods. The test data are of a preliminary nature, since most of the work was exploratory. Fine Silver Eject of Compacting Pressure on Hardness and Density during Cold and Hot Pressing The cold-welding properties of silver have received considerable attention and the welding characteristics are functions of such variables as: cleanliness of metal particles (impurities and adsorbed gases), chemical nobility of particles, plasticity and hardness, particle assortment, particle shape, particle porosity, apparent density, temperature, pressure, time, recrystalliza-tion characteristics. Chemical nobility, plasticity and low temperature of recrystallization after work-hardening are responsible for the excellent low-temperature bonding properties of silver. Several series of compacts were pressed at pressures of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 70 and 80 tons per square inch, at temperatures of 32°C. (room temperature), l00°, 2000, 300°, 400°, and 450°C. Silver powder of minus 325-mesh, produced by displacing silver from a nitrate solution by means of copper, was used. The density was calcuiated from accurately measured and weighed compacts. The hardness was measured on the Rockwell F scale. The investigation shows that an increase in pressure promotes a higher density and hardness regardless of pressing temperature, up to a temperature of 400° C. The pressure-density curves at various pressing temperatures are shown in Fig. I, the pressure-hardness curves at various pressing temperatures, in Fig. z. The greatest increase in both hardness and density was obtained in the pressure range of 5 to 20 tons per square inch. A compact from each series was annealed at 300°C. in air, for various lengths of time. The hardness values after annealing are shown in Table I. A minimum hardness was obtained after one hour of annealing. No change in density occurred during annealing. The maximum density was obtained at 80 tons per sq. in., and at this pressure the hardness is equal to that of hard-drawn wrought

"The commissioning of the 4th concentrator (C4) at Freeport Indonesia in early 1998 increased total mill throughput from 130k to 230k tonnes per day. The C4 flowsheet consists of a single 38 ft diameter SAG mill, four 24 ft diameter ball mills followed by four banks of 4,500 ft3 WEMCO flotation cells.The design of the C4 rougher flotation circuit was based on the expectation that the copper and gold recoveries achieved with the 4500 ft3 flotation cells would be equivalent to or better than that achieved with the 3,000 ft3 flotation cells in the 3rd concentrator (C3) rougher circuit. This assumption was due to the fact that the C4 flotation feed size would be less than 15% +212 microns compared to the C3 rougher flotation feed size of less than 23% +212 microns. By mid 1998 it had become apparent that the C4 rougher flotation copper and gold recoveries were below those predicted.In order to determine the cause of the lower recoveries, stage by stage rougher flotation surveys were performed in all four concentrators. The results of the surveys showed that the C4 rougher flotation circuit had a lower recovery of +200 micron material than that achieved in the C 1, C2 and C3 concentrators. Through mineralogical analysis, it was determined that a majority of the copper contained in the +200 micron fractions was liberated and recoverable. This paper describes the steps taken to increase coarse particle recovery, overall plant recovery and the results achieved."

Materials may be dredged, processed, stored and loaded for shipment at a single site in water depths ranging from 250 to 1200 ft. Solution mining may also be accomplished in deep sea situations. And, open air subsea mines with direct surface access may be developed and worked under the ocean floor. These concepts for deep sea mining are the results of extensive testing of individual components of the proposed systems by Dravo Ocean Structures, Inc., a subsidiary of Dravo Corp. A basic structure in these systems is the articulated platform. The platform consists of a gravity- type base and a buoyant cylindrical column which is constructed at an onshore location, towed to the offshore site and installed in a matter of days without use of heavy equipment. The base is also buoyant for towing purposes. This allows for gradual flooding to the point of negative buoyancy for positioning and anchoring to the ocean floor.

Where soil conditions are favorable, augercast piles have significant economic advantages, but they also have some uncertainty due to the in construction methods. To confirm structural integrity, static testing can be performed on a small sample of piles. Other Non-Destructive Evaluation methods like Pulse Echo are frequently specified for a large percentage of the remaining production piles. However, such NDE methods require testing the pile after the grout/concrete has hardened. If problems are found, then the repair or replacement can be relatively expensive. The confidence in the quality of these piles can be improved by automatically monitoring the grout pumped as a function of depth during the grouting phase of installation. If a low grout volume is detected, the pile can be redrilled and regrouted immediately while the piling rig is still in place and the grout still fluid. This considerably reduces remedial costs. To be effective, such installation monitors must accurately determine both grout volume and depth during installation and be rugged simple to operate. Such an equipment can be of great help to the installation crews. The assurance gained may reduce the need for subsequent NDE tests. The quality of inspection of driven piles depends heavily on the inspection personnel. While inspection is critical in a good installation, it is sometimes assigned a low priority. Inspection personnel in many cases are technicians with little pile experience. They may not understand the project needs or even how the pile driving equipment works. The task is often monotonous and any distraction makes accurate record keeping difficult. In some cases inspection is totally ignored for lack of qualified personnel. Electronic systems can automatically and accurately monitor driven pile installations and include documentation of certain hammer performance parameters. This paper describes equipment available and routinely in use for automated monitoring of both augercast and driven piles and demonstrates applications on typical construction sites. Over the period 2000 to 2003, roof falls have accounted for 4 to 14% of the fatalities in underground mining operations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce the frequency, exposure, and risk of these events through an ongoing program of field and laboratory studies. One area of research involves the evaluation of polyurethane grouting technology that is commonly used to stabilize fractured mine roof strata. Concurrently, NIOSH is conducting work to evaluate the application of ground penetrating radar for advanced delineation of problematic mining areas. In this study, NIOSH partnered with Sub-Technical, Inc. who injected a polyurethane grout (also known as glue) into a roof area of NIOSH’s Safety Research Coal Mine. The mine roof area was scanned using ground penetrating radar technology before and after grout injection in an attempt to determine the extent of grout infiltration. A comparison of the pre-and post-grouting radar records showed a significant change at a mine roof depth of about four to five feet. The interpreted radar records were then compared with drill core information, borescope evaluation of roof-bolt holes in the study area, and underground observations. At this site, the interpretations of the radar records correlated with data obtained from the core holes, borescope evaluations and underground observations. This study showed that ground penetrating radar technology can be a useful tool for detecting changes in mine roof due to the injection of the grout.

Cumberland Resources Ltd. is currently planning to develop the Meadowbank Gold Project located some 70 km north of Baker Lake, Nunavut in the eastern Canadian Arctic region. The Meadowbank Gold Project currently consists of up to 6 main gold bearing deposits within relatively close proximity to one another which are planned to be mined primarily as a truck-and-shovel open pit operation and using conventional gold milling and extraction. The mining plan indicates that approximately 20 million tonnes of ore will be mined over a mine life of 8 to 10 years. The operation will generate approximately 160 million tonnes of mine waste rock and about 20 million tonnes of tailings. The site is located in an area of continuous permafrost with mean annual average air temperature of -11 °C and average annual precipitation in the range of 100 to 200 mm. Lakes cover a large portion of the site, including some of the ore deposits. The location of the site, and the physical environment, pose challenges to development. This paper presents some of the designs considered to effectively manage and utilize the waste products of mining at the project.

Froth flotation is one of the most widely used and effective processes for mineral benefication. First introduced in 1911, flotation technology has seen many developments over the past 80-plus years. Innovations in reagent chemistry, equipment design, process analysis and process control have given design and plant engineers a powerful set of "tools" for process optimization. However, it does not follow that all flotation systems are optimized. As Klimpel observes: "The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is relatively easy to get reasonable results, and relatively difficult to get excellent results." Klimpel [1988] While reasonable was sufficient in the past. competitive forces will make excellent necessary in the future. Judging by the activities in many Canadian plants this transition is already underway.

Many massive sulfide deposits and districts around the World contain rocks that are variously referred to as ?exhalites?, banded iron formation (IF), ?Algoma-type? IF, ferruginous chert, jasper, jasperoid, cherty tuff, tuffite, tuffaceous exhalite, chloritic IF or sulfide IF. With few exceptions, such rocks are thought to be (in part) fossil hydrothermal sediments deposited from hydrothermal fluids vented into a submarine rift environment. Such hydrothermal sediments are associated with a wide variety of ancient base-metal sulfide deposits (e.g., Cyprus-, Besshi-, Kuroko-, and Broken-Hill-type deposits), and hydrothermal sediments are commonly associated with some of the largest base metal sulfide deposits in the world. Analogs of ancient hydrothermal sediments can be found around many modern seafloor hydrothermal deposits which themselves precipitate from high-temperature (350°-400°C) hydrothermal fluids. Hydrothermal fluids are quenched on contact with ambient seawater, and most of the metals are immediately precipitated to form the mound and chimney deposits. However, for kinetic and solubility reasons, not all metals and other species are immediately precipitated at the vent site. Fine particles (up to several hundred microns in diameter) of sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, oxides, silica, Fe-oxyhydroxides, clays, and other phases are precipitated from the hydrothermal fluids in the water column above the deposits. These particles or "particulates" are carried upward for several hundred meters in a buoyant hydrothermal plume (which is typically several hundred meters thick) until it reaches a neutral density, and disperses laterally from the vent site. Modelling of plume dynamics has shown that the majority of particulates are deposited by gravitational settling a few hundred meters from the vent site, and Å99% of particulates are deposited within 3 kilometers. However, signals from modern plumes have been detected even hundreds of kilometers from their source. Factors which can affect the morphology of the plume (and the resultant fallout pattern) include: particulate size, shape and density, bottom topography, and the direction and velocity of bottom currents.

An extensive programme of ground instrumentation and observation was carried out for the West Duff in Outfall Sewer tunnel project prior to and during construction, to establish the performance characteristics of the rock through which the tunnel and appurtenant openings were dug and to examine the nature of the lining-to-ground interaction. The existence of high horizontal residual ground stresses was confirmed, and values established by overcoring. Rock deformations and stress changes were monitored during tunnelling. Permanent stress and strain monitoring devices were set into the final lining and these are continuing to operate. INTRODUCTION The site is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario at Pickering, some 20 miles (32 kilometres) east of Toronto, Canada where a variable thickness of glacial or interglacial sediments overlies bituminous shale bedrock of. the Collingwood Formation which is lower Ordovician age. Approximately 50 feet (15 metres) of glacial cover exists at the shaft, though this thins abruptly at the regressing cliffed shoreline such that several small areas of exposed bedrock exist in the lakebed. The general location, overall geological section and detailed site plan and profile are illustrated in Figs.1,2 and 3 respectively. General properties of the rock as established during an extensive test drilling and site investigation programme are listed in Table 1, while stress determination by USER overcoring stress meter device are given in Table ll. These data formed the basis of analyses which were done to examine the intended outfall design, and to detail the construction procedure and the observational instrumentation programme.

The various types of risks that arise in minerals industry projects are usually financial, technical, or environmental, and the key to valid risk analysis is complete integration of all risks, both within and between categories. Geographical information systems (GIS) and geostatistical simulation methods can provide a means of integrating data and conducting realistic risk analyses. Risk can be quantified but there are limitations to numerical approaches to risk assessment. Realistic quantification requires adequate models of the processes that give rise to risk. Risk perception must also be taken into account when conducting risk assessment and reporting the results, especially in public forums. The modelling and visualisation capabilities of a combined GIS/simulation system can provide the means of dealing with perception in risk analysis

Helical Piles are increasingly being used to support and rehabilitate structures subjected to compressive axial loads. Traditionally, empirical correlations between installation torque and load capacity of helical screw piles are used as the field quality control. Load tests, however, are always recommended to validate the installation process and design methodology. This paper describes a test program performed on helical piles installed at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site of the University of Massachusetts - Amherst campus (UMass-Amherst), well known for its deep varved clay deposit. Seven of these piles were submitted to Dynamic Load Tests using the Pile Driving Analyzer® (PDA), and also to Static Load Tests. Good agreements were obtained between the results of the dynamic and static load tests, encouraging the use of the former testing method as a viable alternative to the latter for determining the compressive load capacity of helical piles installed in cohesive soils. The results of the load tests were also compared to the predictions based on torque correlations, resulting in correlation coefficients which were higher than the ones traditionally used.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents the documentation for HEAPREC, a methodology for calculating reclamation performance bonds for cyanide heap leach operations. HEAPREC is a template developed for use with Lotus 1-2-33 release 2.01 or newer software. The report is presented in step-by-step "user's manual" format. Appendices contain detailed background and reference material on performance bonding, cyanide detoxification regulation, cyanide detoxification methods, general mine reclamation procedures, and an example bond calculation.

This paper describes a simple finite element (FE) modelling approach which leads to the computation of seismic energy release rate (ERR) and strain energy storage rate (ESR) which result from mining. The concept of critical strain energy is introduced as a means to help evaluate the strainburst potential in mine structures. A new, energy-based, burst potential index (BPI) is proposed. The use of ERR, ESR and BPI is demonstrated by a cut-and-fill stope case study. The merits of using such energy parameters in the interpretation and analysis of strainburst phenomena are discussed. While the study gives promising results, site-specific back analyses would be required to first calibrate the model and fit it with the local mine conditions, before it can be adopted as a routine design tool.

During the latter part of 1937 consideration was given to the construction of a; local smelting plant for producing blister copper. Previously copper concentrates had been shipped to the United States of America. The proposition had the advantages of a saving in cost of realization, quicker financial return and reduced dependence on overseas shipping.The smelter was designed by the existing staff, who had difficulty in obtaining data on small plants, particularly on the reverberatory furnace. Construction was started in March, 1938, and the reverberatory was blown in on January 16th, 1939. One roaster had been operating for several weeks prior to this date.While results and operating technique on this new departure in small-scale smelting are barely beyond the experimental stage, it is felt that the experience gained to this time should be recorded to help fill the obvious gap in published information covering plants of this type.At present there are three copper smelters operating in Australia; the other two plants are equipped with blast furnaces.LOCATIONThe new smelter is situated in a position convenient to the concentrator and to the power plant. A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd.
