"The experimental flotation work described in this paper was undertaken to test the conclusions derived from a previous microscopic and chemical study of several samples of converter slag. That study3 resulted in the conclusion that approximately 90 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag wad in either the sulphide or metallic form, and that if the slag were cooled slowly the copper-bearing material would be in particles of such size that they would be freed from silicate and magnetite grains by grinding the slag to pass a 150-mesh sieve. If this were true, it should be possible to separate the copper-bearing grains from slowly cooled, converter slag by the flotation process.Many attempts, of which the author has seen no published account, have been made to treat slags, especially converter slags, by flotation. In every case these trials have been made with chilled slags, in which, as shown in the preceding report, the copper-bearing material is top finely disseminated, to be freed by any reasonable degree of grinding.The flotation tests described in this paper have shown that it is possible to recover by flotation about 30 per cent of the copper content of a converter slag containing 3 per cent copper and to obtain flotation concentrates which have a copper content of 35 per cent.Acknowledgment is made to G. Alluvial gold mining in New Zealand and in particular on the West Coast underwent a renaissance during the early 1980's. This was based on two main factors: a) the sharp rise in the gold price b) the advent of the hydraulic excavator with which to mine the auriferous gravels. The scale of operations varies considerably. A small operation typically consisting of one or two people using an excavator to feed either a land based or pontoon mounted (floating) gold recovery unit, which will typically feature a rotary screen with or without a tailings stacker with the screened fines < 10 - 15 mm) fed over riflle tables. The largest screening plants of this type are operated by DML Resources in their Arahura and Mikonui mining operations where the plants have the capacity to screen up to 250 m3 of gravel per hour. These plants usually employ jigs and centrifugal concentrators for gold recovery. Unique amongst current operations is the Grey River Dredge, a bucket ladder dredge capable of processing 700 m3 per hour similar to those that operated earlier this century. Gold concentration is by a series of jigs. The number of plants operating in recent times peaked at around 130 in 1987 (coinciding with a nominal average gold price of $751) and since that time has steadily declined to 80 units in 1993 and about 45 - 50 units today. This cycle of rapid expansion and then steady decline has been repeated on the West Coast since the original gold discoveries in the mid nineteenth century.

"Rock properties have a material impact on mining processes, including drilling performance. An investigation using point loaded index (PLI) data converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) has revealed that a direct relationship between grain size and UCS exists at Mogalakwena Mine. This correlation is best seen in unaltered rock, with lower correlations for altered rock types. Measurements from the new RockMa system installed on drill rigs can be used to obtain rock strength data to validate the current rock strength domains and create additional data for the next benches below. An investigation of penetration rates in different lithologies shows that rock composition plays an important role in determining drill performance. Additionally, there is an inverse relationship between rock strength and drilling penetration rate – a measure of how efficiently a hole is drilled.The domaining of grain-size-adjusted UCS at Mogalakwena Mine will allow more accurate scheduling of drill rigs through increased knowledge of rock strength in various areas. Successful rock strength domaining has the potential to be incorporated into blast indexing and predicting crushing/milling performance.IntroductionThe optimization of mining and processing through geometallurgical characterization of ore are key drivers of value realization (Deutch, 2013). Rock strength is one such property and is affected by, among other variables, composition, texture, and grain size (Ozturk, Nasuf, and Kahraman, 2014). Mogalakwena Mine is exploiting the intrusive Platreef PGE (platinum group element)-bearing orebody which forms part of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This complex orebody exhibits areas of metasomatic alteration, metamorphism, and sporadic mineralization of the footwall and hangingwall (Nex et al., 2006). Understanding this variability is paramount due to the implications for rock strength and hardness, which in turn affect crushing, milling, and liberation efficiency. These variables must be known prior to blasting in order to optimize mine and plant processes using in-situ variables. This necessitates predictive modelling (Deutch, 2013). Geological and geotechnical data was sourced from the Overysel (OY) exploration database for the study. Point load testing was done for each borehole and the results converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (Akram and Bakar, 2007). The relationship of lithology, texture, and grain size with UCS revealed an inverse relationship between grain size and UCS in unaltered rock. The relationship was not present in altered rock types. A comparison of mean strength and hardness results indicated that Bond work index and UCS may be related. Drilling performance is affected by UCS (Bourgoyne et al., 1986), and this was proven using recent measurements obtained during drilling. Lastly, grain-sizeadjusted UCS values were applied to a 3D model for the OY property."

1.1 Section 47(1) of the Mine Health and Safety Act, 29 of 1996 (?the MHSA?) establishes a Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate which is administered by the Chief Inspector of Mines. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate is part of the Department of Mineral Resources. The Chief Inspector is appointed by the Minister of Mineral Resources (see section 48(1) of the MHSA). 1.2 The Chief Inspector must, amongst other things, ensure that the provisions of the MHSA are complied with and enforced, and that all the duties imposed upon the Chief Inspector and the other Inspectors of Mines in terms of the MHSA and any other law are performed. The Chief Inspector of Mines must appoint Principal Inspectors of Mines and Inspectors of Mines to assist him/her to discharge his/her duties (see section 49(1)(a) and (c) of the MHSA).

Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. The concentrations of methane and coal dust vary from one location to another in underground coalmines. In the presence of an ignition source, such as static electricity, these mixtures can initiate explosions and consequently cause massive destruction. Research data can help in understanding the level of hazards and associated risk these flammable mixtures can produce. For instance, the level of peak explosion pressure and flame speed can be well understood from experimental and numerical research data. With this aim, methane–air mixtures and methane-coal dust-air mixtures were employed in a ducted spherical vessel. According to literature, the maximum value of peak explosion pressure can be obtained in vessels of spherical geometry when compared to vessels of other geometries. Thus the values of explosion parameters generated from spherical vessels can be incorporated in understanding the highest level of hazard that can occur in a real world scenario.In this study, the duct integrated with the vessel resembles any channel or pathway connected to a methane and/or coal dust rich area in the mine. Experimental investigations emphasise that the severity of explosion in the explosion zone transmits to the channel or pathway. The length of the channel or pathway also plays an important role on the values of explosion parameters. The greater the length of the channel or pathway, the higher the explosion pressure is and therefore the higher the destruction. Ignition energy and concentrations of methane and coal dust were varied in collecting experimental data. The Program of Mine Safety and Health Research described in this document reflects the continuing commitment of the Spokane and Pittsburgh Research Laboratories to focus on the most important areas where research can make a difference in reducing risk and improving safety and health for miners. It is the first program of work conducted since Congress mandated closure of the former U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the Department of the Interior and supported integration of the health and safety research function of the former USBM into the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Organizational changes made FY97 a challenging year of transition. Ongoing research was reviewed and revised to reflect the new, more limited, health and safety mandate of the research laboratories. The mining industry, mine worker representatives, and interested government agencies provided broad input to assure that the research performed would focus on the most critical safety and health problems confronting mining today and which are expected to be faced in the future. The two laboratories worked to evolve coordinated programs of safety and health research, each with a special focus. The work of the Spokane Research Laboratory is directed toward issues of special importance to the Western mining industry, particularly those safety hazards found in metal/nonmetal mining and surface mining. The work of the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory will continue to focus on Eastern mining, particularly underground coal mining. Traditional areas of expertise for understanding and preventing fires and explosions and for controlling the hazards of dust and noise will continue to reside in Pittsburgh. Each laboratory is developing new capabilities in the analysis of relevant safety and health information to assure that program priority-setting decisions are informed by the best available data. Recognizing the continuing importance of communicating the results of research to all who are capable of improving safety and health conditions in mining, each laboratory has developed an activity for information dissemination and coordination with stakeholders. In the midst of organizational self-examination and change, the research staff in Pittsburgh and Spokane have never wavered from their continuing commitment to conduct the highest quality scientific research-solution-oriented scientific work meant to reduce the risk of injury, disease, and death from occupational hazards in mining. The pages that follow give insight into some of the program activities and accomplishments from FY97. I hope you share my pride in the many accomplishments of the NIOSH mine safety and health research program during this year. This report comes at a time of increasing stability for the mine health and safety research program. The organizational changes in Spokane and Pittsburgh have been concluded, and NIOSH has succeeded in recruiting a new, permanent associate director for mining to lead this critically important national program. Congress has contributed to an optimistic future by providing expanded funding for NIOSH mining-related research for the next fiscal year. On a personal note, I greatly appreciate the opportunity I have had to serve as the NIOSH Acting Associate Director for Mining during this transitional year. The commitment and intelligence with which the mining research staff pursued their mission was matched by their patience and understanding in moving into a new organizational environment. All of us committed to improved safety and health for this Nation's miners owe them our respect and appreciation.

"The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

During a programme to determine the suitability of the UK site for deep disposal of radioactive wastes, geostatistical methods were used to characterise rock heterogeneity on the basis of seismic and wireline acoustic-impedance data. The data were analysed to yield semi-variogram models that quantified the three-dimensional spatial heterogeneity of acoustic impedance. These models were reconciled with geological interpretations of the area and used to generate simulations of acoustic impedance, with wireline acoustic impedance as conditioning data. The three-dimensional simulated images were compared with actual seismic acoustic impedance. The variography confirmed a vertical zoning effect in the Borrowdale Volcanics, showing that it is caused by preferential clusters of high acoustic impedance values corresponding to regions of relatively low porosity. At Creighton Mine, magnitude events are a regular occurrence due to depth and major seismically-active structures. Over the last ten years, major advances have been made in research and development to develop strategies for the management of these major events. Today, the number of rockbursts has been drastically reduced at the mine and damage due to seismic events, when they occur, is often minimal. This paper describes the evolution and implementation of appropriate geomechanics strategies, designs, and practical ground control measures undertaken for the management of seismicity at Vale Inco?s Creighton Mine. A description of the research and development approach, implementation, and ground control strategy is provided for placement of enhanced support systems to manage the consequences of magnitude events at Creighton

Agapito Associates (AAI) provides consulting services in geo-engineering, mining engineering and related disciplines. Founded in 1978, the firm operates out of offices in Grand Junction, CO, Golden, CO and Lombard, IL. Members of the staff include mining, civil and geological engineers, physicists, geologists, numerical analysts, computer specialists, instrumentation specialists, plus administration and technical support personnel. AAI has provided consulting and engineering services to mining companies producing base metals, precious metals, coal, potash, trona, limestone, oil shale and salt, and to defense and nuclear-waste disposal industries. AAI also provides services for measuring in situ horizontal stresses using an advanced biaxial overcore stress downhole measurement system developed by Sigra of Australia. Since 1978, AAI has measured in situ stress in copper, oil shale, molybdenum, trona, limestone and coal mines, and in tunnels and concrete structures. Since 1994, the staff has completed 527 overcore stress determinations. AAI has the equipment and personnel for overcoring, sample coring and instrumentation installation in limited access, surface and underground mines. Portable Longyear CP-65 drills, borehole deformation gauges and strain indicators are used for difficult-access overcoring and are permissible for use in gassy mines.

AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy has recently been involved in the successful installation of intelligent, expert control systems on the milling circuits. The benefits of expert systems in these highly interactive circuits are obvious. Existing comminution tools, which have been developed and can now be incorporated into online control, include improved modelling techniques and understanding, robust and competent simulation methods, sampling techniques, and optimization methods. The minerals processing industry has seen the benefits of predominantly research-based centres turning their focus to commercial applications of comminution circuit modelling packages, which in turn can be utilized within expert control systems. Expert mill control has been successfully installed at AngloGold Ashanti South Africa?s Mponeng and Kopanang Gold Plants. Expert control has also been installed at AngloGold Ashanti?s West African Sadiola Mine operation. The implementation of the systems has produced a number of positive outcomes. Plant surveys usually result in the identification of sub-optimal areas, and the control philosophy is then configured to ensure that these areas (along with the entire circuit) are optimized and maintained. Outdated PID loops have generally resulted in oscillatory control with large amplitude deviations from set-point. Significant improvements in SAR Metallurgy operations have been realized, firstly through achieving stability in the load and cyclone control, and secondly through online identification and implementation of optimized set-point conditions for mill mass, discharge density, etc. Soft sensors are configured to accurately estimate parameters that were historically not measurable, viz. breakage rate, mill load condition, onlinekWh/t-75 microns, mill discharge density and cyclone overflow grading. The Mponeng Plant system achieved circuit stability and improved overall grind. The Plant was able to pay back the control installation after 3 months, based on the additional recovery obtained from the finer grind. The system at Kopanang Plant has also resulted in enhanced plant recovery as a result of a finer grind and a lower residue gold content. The payback for this system was calculated at approximately 6 months. AngloGold Ashanti Metallurgy is currently expanding the installation of expert control to its other operations. It is also evaluating the performance of various suppliers of advanced control systems.

The extension of the commuter railway system (S-Bahn) in Leipzig, Germany willrequire the construction of an underground line crossing the downtown area of thecity to tie the Bavarian Station in the South to the Main-Station in the North. The City-Tunnel-Leipzig is currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This system extension will have a length of approximately five kilometers. 3.9 kilometers of that length are currently being constructed using either cut & cover construction or tunnelingmethods. The design and construction of this project currently is and will continue facing very significant challenging urban and demanding geotechnical conditions.

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. Now that the price of sulfur has reached unexpected high levels, it is little wonder that sulfur from surface ores is again receiving attention. In most instances, it is advantageous for an ore to be at or near the surface. However, it is a distinct disadvantage for sulfur ore to be close to the surface because it precludes the use of the Frasch process. The Frasch process depends on the presence of at least 180 m of uniform overburden to allow pressure injection of superheated water into the sulfur-bearing formation to melt the sulfur. In the Frasch process, sulfur separates cleanly from the gangue underground and comes to the surface in a very pure form. Surface sulfur deposits, particularly those in the Western Hemisphere, exist largely due to volcanic activity, and sulfur separation from the gangue is a formidable technical problem. None of the surface deposits are large compared to some of the Frasch deposits, but at the present sulfur price, they are certainly of economic importance. From the turn of the century until 1975, the price of sulfur was for the most part $18-$28/t. However, with the price of sulfur now over $154/t, there are a variety of technical alternatives to consider for sulfur surface ore separation that may not have been economically attractive a few years ago.

The number of Native Americans presently working as mining engineers is extremely low-perhaps three in the entire US. At the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, it was felt that introducing high ability students to mining engineering at the high school level would encourage more to consider mining engineering as a career. New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, NM, has initiated a continuing summer college program for Native American high school students. The program, which began in the summer of 1980, is designed to introduce participants to college life, enrich their high school curricula, and expose them to the problems and challenges of a career in mining and related engineering fields. Students From reservations throughout New Mexico with a demonstrated aptitude for science and mathematics were encouraged to apply for admission. Preference was given to high school sophomores and juniors since it is hoped that students will want to return for a second year before graduating from high school and beginning university studies. The program seeks to impress upon the students the need fir Native Americans in the fields of seience and mineral engineering.

Bulk sampling programs are typically applied in coarse gold mineralised systems to verify resource/reserve grades. In recent years, there have been controversies surrounding some results of underground bulk sampling exercises compared to the predictions using diamond drill data. Just how realistic is it to predict 100 t lots from drilling that was designed to model blocks of several thousand tonnes? This study looks at the variation of relatively small units within larger planned mining units and compares some of the geostatistical techniques which purport to provide tools for such studies. Relative difficulty of application, computer timings and summaries of results will be used to illustrate the likely variation in bulk sampling units as opposed to mining units and large-scale planning units. A case study based on publicly available data from a gold project in North America is presented. A simplistic and unconditional geostatistical simulation model demonstrated that up to 50 per cent of a relatively high-grade mining block could show as uneconomic low-grade subblocks. A subsequent study will consider a similar demonstration using uniform conditioning. Erroneous impressions of early sampling results can lead to unsupported prejudgements of the final results. Bulk sampling programs require detailed planning based on ore characteristics, where protocols must fit the mineralisation type. Any program requires definition of aims and data quality objectives across grade, geological, geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters.CITATION:Clark, I and Dominy, S C, 2017. The direction of the optic or "C" axis of a uniaxial metal crystal can be found with the metallurgical polarizing microscope by examining two planes of section on the crystal. Complete orientation of the crystal can be determined if a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section. Examination of Uniaxial Metals in Polarized Light-Rotation of a uniaxial crystal surface, properly prepared,' shows four extinction positions 90 deg apart, provided that the surface is not close to a basal section. One of these two extinction directions corresponds with the projection of the optic axis on the surface of section. This direction can be found if the 'sign of the rotationr2 for the metal is known. To find the direction of the optic axis, the crystal is rotated on the stage 45 deg from an extinction position. With a crystal of negative sign, to produce extinction the analyser must be rotated towards the optic axial direction and vice versa. All sections, other than basal, of a uniaxial crystal have the same sign of rotation and, since there is no change in sign with wave length, white light can be used for these measurements. U the sign of the rotation is not known the presumed direction of the optic axis can be determined assuming a positive sign. A third section cut normal to the presumed optic axis will show basal extinction if the assumption is correct. It is convenient to use the edge between the two planes of section as a fiducial direction common to both surfaces. The optic axis can be related to this direction. If the above measurements are repeated on the other plane of section and the angle between the two section planes measured, stereographic projection can be used to determine the orientation of the crystal optic axis. Determination of Complete Orientation—The complete orientation of a uniaxial crystal can be determined provided that a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section, and the twin law is known. The orientation of the twin crystal optic axis can be determined in the same way as for the main crystal

In the United States, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to implement its Tier 2 air quality standards governing high-horsepower, off-road diesel engines. The regulations take effect in January2006. In Europe, similar standards, called Stages, are due to take effect about the same time. And other markets, such as Japan and Australia, have their own standards on tap. Tier 2 standards will further reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOX), sulfur dioxide (SO2), diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons off-highway diesel engines are allowed to emit. And even more restrictive Tier 4 standards are due in 2011. The upshot is that operators of high-horsepower engines, particularly in mining, will begin using in their new off-road haul trucks, excavators, shovels and other mining machines diesel engines that are designed to meet these more stringent standards.
