Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. The Deep Creek zinc and lead mine afforded an excellent example of a relatively small underground mine operation that approached the low mining costs of large, highly mechanized mines. An open stope mining method incorporating sublevel benches and vertical long holes was used (fig. 1). Detailed descriptions are given on the exploration program, stope development, stoping procedures, and pillar removal. Pressure grouting was used to check the inflow of water and thus prolong the life of the mine. Statistics on mining costs and on electric power consumption, haulage from mine to mill, and milling costs are included.

"The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. The Raub Gold Mines are situated approximately in the centre of the Malayan Peninsula in the State of Penang. Part of the area, now known as "Raubhole," was opencut some 800 years ago by the Mon Khmers, a Cambodian people, whose vestiges mark numerous outcrops in South Eastern Asia. With their decline and extinction the work was abondoned, leaving a large pond in a dense thicket of Beluka (secondary growth).From the year 1885 onwards the history of Raubhole and the water therein records a chain sale starting from an enterprising local "Rajah," who had "assumed" authority, to an equally wakeful Singapore Arab; thence through the agency of a "down-and-out" beachcomber to a hopeful Australian company in the "goldbrick" days. Subsequent catastrophe on a depleted stringer was followed by reconstruction; the deserved reward of a long mining life, and an output of nearly 800,000 ounces of gold. Owing to the loss of notes and data stored in Singapore, this paper is not as complete as it should be, especially in respect to its metallurgical phases. Apologies are therefore tendered in advance for any deficiencies which may be noted.The necessary regional geological data have been taken largely from the admirable investigation of the Raub area by J. A. Richardson, A.R.C.S., B.Sc., F.G.S., of the Malayan Geological Survey*, and, throughout the paper, months represent lunar periods of 28 days and money is expressed in sterling.MINING SECTIONSAs shown hereunder the reef system has been divided by nature into seven isolated sections, which have been of necessity worked as seven separate small mines. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is underlain by karstic limestone. Firm clays, mudstones and siltstoncs of the Kenny Hill Formation overlie the limestone for about two thirds of the city. The remaining third has deep deposits of very soft alluvium, or tin mining slimes, overlying the limestone. It is only recently that large buildings have been constructed in the area. Arup Jururunding have been concerned with several projects located on the limestone, although space here only permits the description of four sites in detail. The experience has allowed the development of a design approach for the foundations. The aim is to make the architectural scheme compatible with the geology. This is not always possible, and examples are given of both situations. The case histories give examples of compensated foundations, and piled foundations include steel H-piles, precast concrete piles, micropiles, bored piles with rock sockets, and barrettes up to 90m deep.

The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) evaluated several pile foundation schemes for supporting the structures along the realignment of Interstate 880. The project replaces the double-decked (Cypress) viaduct collapsed in Oakland, California during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Structural support demands led to the selection of steel pipe piles (16-, 24-, and 42-inch-(406-, 610- and 1067-mm-)diameter), filled with concrete and steel reinforcement. Deep penetrations required through layers of very dense/cemented sands in some locations, caused serious drivability and pile integrity concerns. The need for large pile driving hammers and large diameter steel pipe piles pushed the engineers well beyond local experience. Such questions as the feasibility of driving the pipes closed-ended through dense upper strata and quantifying the effects of installation on the long-term capacities of the piles led Caltrans to develop a comprehensive pile test program to address the design and construction issues effectively. The results were furnished to prospective bidders on the production stages of the ensuing contracts.

Rock density determinations are necessary for ore resource evaluations from estimated block grades in g/t. Rock density depends on the mineral composition and, thus, it is specific for each rock type. The rock density distributions for different rock types are often symmetric. Hence, the arithmetic mean is a good approximation for the average density for lithological units. However, there may exist spatial variation in density values due to alteration, fracturing and original heterogeneities such as layering. This study compares the kriged density model with the one with constant density values for different lithological units in the evaluation of metal amounts in rock blocks. The case study consisted of rock densities measured from the drill cores at Ahmavaara PGE deposit in northern Finland. The used Ni contents were simulated in accordance with the spatial distribution of rock densities. The Ni amounts in 2x2x2 m3blocks are higher for the kriged densities than for the average densities. The difference is increasing with the increasing metal amounts due to the nonlinear correlation between Ni content and rock density. The final effect on the resource estimation depends on the cutt off grade and prices of the metal, for example, for a very valuable metal the small differences are significant

In the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia (Germany) small and medium sized companies are beginning to extract the related gas via old shafts or boreholes and to use it as a source for the production of electricity and heat. More than 100 applications for the separate mining right on mine gas had already been filed by beginning of 2002, since mine gas is treated as a mineral resource under the Federal Mining Law. Meanwhile more than 40 mine gas concessions have been granted and first projects are being developed with encouraging results so far. To enhance the applied techniques and their efficiency Aachen University has formed a research team in this discipline. Scope and goals of this research activities are being presented in this paper. Concentrates of titaniferous minerals containing around 30 wt% Ta2O5 are processed hydrometallurgically by hydrofluoric acid leaching and solvent extraction, followed by the precipitation of hydrated potassium heptafluorotantalate. A fundamental study of the thermodynamics of this precipitation and recrystallisation was undertaken to increase understanding of the conditions most conducive to the production of pure, well-crystallised K2TaF7. Activity-pH diagrams for the Ta-K-F-H2O system explained the dissolution of Ta2O5 in fluoride solutions quite well and also the precipitation-recrystallisation of K2TaF7.H2O. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the thermodynamic observations. It was concluded that the best precipitating agent for K2TaF7 from fluoride solutions is KF but a recrystallisation step in a HF environment produces purer, well-crystallised K2TaF7.H2O, eliminating oxy-salts and other impurities

The increasing move to block cave mining methods (including sublevel and panel caving) to access deeper and lower grade ore deposits as near surface sources become exhausted raises questions as to the extent and magnitudes of caving-induced subsidence as it may affect strain-sensitive infrastructure on surface. Predicting these surface deformations is difficult as they tend to be discontinuous and asymmetric due to large movements around the cave controlled by geologic structures, rock mass heterogeneity and topographic effects. Of further impediment is the sparse number of case histories available, in which actual subsidence measurements are reported to provide guidance and empirical constraints for subsidence calculations. This study reports the development of an exhaustive and comprehensive database of available (i.e. public domain) subsidence data from block cave mining operations from around the world.

"Although Canada has achieved one of the highest living standards in the world, people and organizations have, over the past decade, begun to question the cost and means of this achievement. Concern has been expressed about the degree of environmental disturbance arising from industrial activities which have greatly contributed to our increased living standards. These industries include hardrock mining, pit and quarry operations, hydro-electric schemes, various agricultural enterprises and urban land developments.In the construction and operation of the above industries many environmental problems arise because the natural vegetative land cover is destroyed or drastically disturbed. Disturbance may occur to such a degree that revegetation is di ffi cult, often it appears impossible. Portions of the environment around such industries remain aesthetically unacceptable and appear to offer little or no potential for future resource use in wildlife, recreation or agriculture.The general public cannot dissociate itself from the activities of the aforementioned industries. It has, over many years, accepted the benefits and conveniences arising from those activities. Despite this, the increasing level of public concern imposes upon industry a need to alleviate or repair past, present and future environmental disturbance. Therefore it is incumbent upon industry to modify present technology or develop new techniques which would allow the disturbed environment to be easily and rapidly repaired."

Malmberget town is located in northern Sweden, approximately 70 km north of the Arctic Circle. Parts of the town overlie more than 20 iron orebodies, consisting mainly of magnetite with smaller quantities of haematite. The mine is operated by the mining company LKAB. Mining started in the 17th century, but not until the railway to the coastal city of Luleå was completed in 1888 did large-scale production commence. Around 1920, mining proceeded underground and today sublevel caving is the only mining method used. Sublevel caving causes subsidence of the ground surface, and buildings and residential areas have been relocated due to the mining activities for more than 50 years. The number of seismic events accompanied by strong ground vibrations is now increasing. In 2008 the mine received a permit from the Environmental Court of Sweden to increase production to 20 Mt of crude ore per year. A prerequisite for the permit was that the mine conducts a number of investigations regarding the environmental impact on the residents of Malmberget. One of these investigations concerned how seismicity will change as production increases and what measures could be taken to reduce inconvenience to the town residents. Today the mine possesses an extensive seismic monitoring system with more than 180 underground and surface geophones. For this study, eleven seismically active volumes in Malmberget mine were identified, and for each of them, a yearly future maximum magnitude interval was estimated based on the current production plan. Relationships between historical seismic events and measured ground vibrations in the town of Malmberget were established, and future ground vibrations caused by expected seismic events were estimated using a probabilistic approach. The outcome was the number of intervals of expected ground vibration per year and per monitoring point. Possible measures to reduce inconvenience for the town residents include blast restrictions, sequencing, and possibly preconditioning. The ultimate long-term solution is an almost complete relocation of Malmberget town. This process has recently been formalized and LKAB is taking an active part in realizing this goal.

This paper presents a history of the planning, engineering and construction completed for the railroad tunnel crossing part of the West Elizabeth Avenue Storm Drainage Project, undertaken to relieve flooding within the West Elizabeth Avenue area in Linden, NJ. The Railroad Crossing Contract is part of the larger Linden Drainage Improvements Project consisting of a new gravity storm sewer system. The improvements are required to provide additional storm drainage for the City of Linden and the Merck Pharmaceuticals manufacturing facilities in the City of Linden.

As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), techniques have been developed to measure the electrical properties of the various minerals. The measured values will be used to model the behaviour of the various minerals in high-tension roll and electrostatic plate separators. The resistivities of ilmenite, rutile and zircon from a number of Australian producers have been measured by applying a DC voltage across a test sample and measuring the resulting very small current flow. By appropriate design of the measurement cell and attention to the experimental procedure, reproducible resistivity values have been obtained, ranging from 106Ωm for ilmenite to 1013Ωm for zircon. However, the conditions of measurement are radically different from those under which electrical separation takes place. It is not certain that the measured values reflect the resistivities seen under high-tension separation, during which the particles are subject to a high intensity corona field. Consequently, an alternative technique for measurement of resistivity under conditions of corona bombardment has been developed. It is based on the experimental procedure of Castle and Yelle (1979) used to measure the resistivity of fly ash under the conditions occurring in electrostatic precipitators. This paper describes the development of the segmented ground plane measurement surface and a high-voltage switched resistor network which comprises the in situ resistivity apparatus. Results are presented comparing the measurements made under corona bombardment with those made using the DC measurement cell. The equipment has also been used to study the current distribution from a corona wire, as a function of high-tension voltage and wire-to-plane spacing.

The ability of an explosive to break rock is influenced considerably by the extent of confinement in the blasthole. It is believed that confinement is improved by the use of adequate stemming. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the first and second stages of developing a stemming performance testing rig for small diameter boreholes. The rig was used to compare and contrast the performance of different designs of products. The results showed that different stemming products have differences in terms of their functionality, which can have a major impact on the efficiency of rock breaking. Two test procedures were used, one through the exclusive use of compressed air and the second using a purpose-built high pressure test rig with small quantities of explosives. Both tests were used to identify and evaluate the ability of various stemming products to resist the escape of explosive gas through the collar of a blasthole. An investigation was done to determine the types of stemming products most commonly used in South African underground hard rock mines, and these products were used during the tests. The first stage of tests using compressed air only did not prove adequate to predict with certainty the pressure behaviour in the borehole of a particular product under high pressure conditions. The purpose-built high pressure test rig also did not prove to be a very effective tool to test stemming products under high pressure conditions. The test rig incorporated only the effect of gas pressure on the stemming product, and excluded the effect of the shock wave. This study therefore proved that to take into account only the gas pressure generated in the blasthole is not sufficient to effectively test stemming product performance.

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.

Dunsmuir Ventures? Nanuq diamond project is located approximately 250 km northeast of Baker Lake and 170 km north of Chesterfield Inlet. It occurs at the intersection of the Wager Bay shear zone with the Keewatin Arch, a major long-lived crustal uplift. The newly discovered diamondiferous kimberlites at Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay and on Melville Peninsula also occur along this arch. Kimberlite indicator mineral (KIM) sampling has outlined a distinct KIM train more than 35 km long and 6 km wide. Geomorphological studies, boulder displacements and dispersion of magnetite in tills suggest that glacial transport distances were on the order of 4 to 6 kms only. The presence of multiple sources within the main Nanuq indicator train would account for its length and breadth. A second train has been located on the west central part of the property and anomalous concentrations of KIM occur elsewhere. Pyrope garnets (G9?s and G10?s), diamond inclusion field (DI) eclogitic garnets and DI chromites were confirmed by microprobe analyses. Clinopyroxene thermobarometry indicates a cool geotherm, approximately 35 mW/m2, and that mantle within the diamond stability field was tapped. An aeromagnetic survey has identified a number of anomalies. Those with down ice KIM support will have ground geophysical follow-up and will be tested in a spring 2004 drill program.
