To improve communication among Government, industry, and academic researchers in the field of thermodynamics, the Federal Bureau of Mines sponsored a Workshop on Techniques for Measurement of Thermodynamic Properties in August 1979. Participants at the workshop presented 33 papers on the subjects of temperature measurement and control, general calorimetric techniques, low-temperature calorimetry, high-temperature calorimetry, galvanic cells, ionic solutions, and heterogeneous phase equilibria. A special invited lecture was presented by E. F. Westrum, Jr., on the resolution of lattice heat capacity. This Information Circular comprises the proceedings of the workshop and includes the texts of papers presented and discussion by attendees.

Unplanned stope panel collapses occur on most near-surface and shallow mines in South Africa. Although these incidents often occur during blasting, they pose a major threat to the safety of underground workers and the economic extraction of orebodies. Most stope panel collapses occur due to excessive panel lengths (resulting in excessive stope spans) that are not designed according to a systematic design procedure or methodology. Instead, panel lengths are often dictated by the equipment in use and by previous experience under similar conditions. Hence, a rock engineering design methodology for the design of stable stope panels between pillars is of vital importance for optimum safety and production in shallow mining operations. Using the proposed design methodology described in this paper, rock mechanics practitioners and mine planners should be able to identify and quantify the critical factors influencing the stability of stope panels. The critical factors should then be used as input to the design of stable stope panels that will provide the necessary safe environment for underground personnel working in stopes. The proposed design methodology is an iterative process, which includes aspects such as rock mass characterization, estimation of rock mass properties, identification of potential failure modes, consideration of appropriate stability analyses and other elements of the rock engineering design process. This process continues after implementation. During monitoring, new data should be included in the database and the design process repeated on a regular basis. Design approaches included in the proposed design methodology include empirical methods such as different rock mass classification methods, analytical methods such as elastic and Voussoir beam analyses, kinematic analyses, probabilistic analyses, and numerical analyses. SOME of the more important properties of finished materials are strength, ductility, toughness, resistance to alternating and repeated stresses, etc: Of these, the property that appears to have received the least consideration, at least in this country, is toughness, which is clue, possibly, to our regarding toughness as a qualitative property or, at any rate, as one that, parallels ductility. This arises out of our greater experience with the simple carbon steels in the rolled or forged (non-heat-treated) condition which, qualitatively, are tough if ductile and are not tough if brittle. In this way we have erroneously become, accustomed to judging the toughness of a material from its behavior in the tensile or similar test. The point of view presented in the present paper is that toughness, like hardness or tensile strength, should be regarded as an independent property and of sufficient importance to require, in so far as that may be possible, quantitative determinations. If such be true, it becomes at once necessary to devise experimental means for measuring, or valuating toughness, and the notched-bar impact test (the Charpy test) is advanced as the most logical test that has so far been developed for this purpose. It is further advanced, with particular emphasis, that we have two kinds of toughness to deal with and, accordingly, they will be dealt with independently. CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIALS ACCORDING TO TOUGHNESS Toughness has been defined somewhat as follows: Tough materials are those that offer considerable resistance to permanent deformation but which, once such resistance has been overcome, may' be deformed plastically, but only by the expenditure of considerable energy. To minimise ore dilution induced by blast movement in surface mines it is necessary to quantify such movement. This will allow more accurate location of the grade boundaries on the surface of a blasted rock pile before excavation. A method has been developed and tested for measuring accurately the direction and magnitude of subsurface blast movement, using a caesium vapour gradiometer and a real-time, differentially corrected global positioning system to locate the pre- and post-blast positions of magnetically enhanced target objects placed in blastholes inside a bench. The procedure does not necessitate disturbance of the blasted rock and the movement information is available sufficiently quickly to allow for modification of the selective mining boundaries for each surveyed blast. It was found that the maximum depth of target detection was 18 m and the overall accuracy was plus or minus 1 m horizontally and 1.2 m vertically

In the Pennsylvania anthracite region, the principal source of U.S. anthracite, refuse disposal problems are common since cities and towns are located over the anthracite measures. The Bureau of Mines surveyed refuse banks in the area, determining that 863 banks containing aver 910 million cubic yards of material occupy a total area of about 19 square miles. The vast bulk of the refuse is located within 2 miles of the traffic centers of incorporated c unities which have a total population of 625,000. Twenty-seven banks are burning, causing considerable distress in a number of communities.

Mining in highly stressed ground conditions has been an increasing challenge at the Brunswick mine. Over the past 30 years, two large regional pillars were established on the 1000 m Level to support the ground for safe extraction of the surrounding ore. The South Regional Pillar contains about 5 Mt of ore and the North Regional Pillar has about 3 Mt of ore. In the fall of 2000, mining activities were suspended following a series of ground movements around the South Regional Pillar along weak geological structures. After extensive geotechnical investigations, a decision was made to carry out a mass de-stress blast in the West Ore Zone (WOZ) to cut the principal stress across an area of 135 m along strike and 86 m high. At the end of July 2001, the WOZ mass blast was successfully initiated. Following this success, the mine decided to take a similar approach to de-stressing the North Regional Pillar (NRP). The final mass blast was taken in early February 2003. Advanced blasting technologies, including state-of-the-art electronic detonators and blast simulation, played an important role in achieving the successful blasts. The high precision of delay timing and long delay duration of the electronic detonators ensured accurate and reliable initiations of over 800 blastholes in the WOZ mass blast. Orica’s DMC_Blast (Distinct Motion Code) simulation code was used to study different blasting blocks for the desired timing in the initiation sequence. This paper describes the process of applying electronic detonators in complex blasts, and discusses how blast simulation results were interpreted to guide engineering design of the mass blasts.

The catalysed direct reduction of copper sulphide with carbon and lime was investigated in the range 850-1000 degrees C using Cu2S-CaO-C and Cu2S-4CaO-4C reaction mixtures. The effects of the catalytic additives K2CO3, Li2CO3, Na2CO3, NaF, Na2SO3 and the ternary eutectic (K,Li,Na)2CO3 were determined. Potassium carbonate, sodium fluoride and the ternary appear to be the most effective catalysts for the direct reduction process. The rate enhancement of the catalysed carbothermic reduction of copper sulphide in the presence of lime was explained in terms of the catalysis of the Boudouard reaction

Besides moral and legal obligations, economic aspects are therefore also factors motivating increased efforts towards optimal prevention: improvements in work safety and protection of health are wise investments! Ever since its earliest days, the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) has made this subject one of its key objectives and therefore set up a Safety + Environmental Working Group, in which experts from the member organisations exchange national experience and develop proposals for "best practices". The paper presents current developments and results from the work of the S+E WG with particular reference to the project "Ideas for Safety Improvement".

The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.

Properties of coal which are significant in relation to preparation for carbonization and conversion are reviewed, and existing coal preparation technology which has been used for production of cleaned coal of suitable ash content and petrographic composition for carbonisation, pyrolysis, hydrogenation and similar processes is described. Possibilities for application of this technology to some Australian coal seams is examined briefly. It is concluded that further survey work is required related to the optimization of selective crushing and concentrating operations, with the aim of maximizing production of quality products for carbonisation, etc mainly from Australian seams with only moderate coking characteristics.

"PRACTICAL SAMPLING TECHNIQUESIt is important to achieve reliability when sampling heterogeneous materials where there is a difference in composition, and non random distribution of the constituent particles. Throughout the design, construction and installation of sampling systems it must be borne in mind that the sampling point must be capable of:-allowing each particle in the stream an equal opportunity to be sampled.-accepting and collecting as large a volume or mass of material as necessary to satisfy the requirements of particle counting statistics.-establishing a sampling plan so that the sample is representative of the whole to a defined standard of accuracy.Design ConsiderationsFactors that may influence the design of the sample point include:-the mass, or volume flow rate of the material being sampled-the size and shape of the material or flowing stream-the physical condition of the material being sampled (i.e. temperature, wetness, size consist, density).-the chemical composition of the material being sampled -the location of the sample point and the space available for installation, extraction, reduction where necessary, secondary sampling, and return of the sample rejects downstream.-whether the process to be sampled is in an existing plant or one yet to be designed and built.-ease of access for servicing and maintaining the equipment.-whether the sampled material must be collected continuously or intermittently.-whether an existing sampling method is likely to be adequate or whether a new technique has to be developed."

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity remained steady at 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports as a major reason for low domestic capacity. In December, pacts with seven leading steel exporting nations were announced. This is an effort to reduce import penetration to about 18.5% of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 50% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production, at 45 kt (49,500 st), rose threefold. Nondestructive testing of deep foundations for integrity problems made great strides in the late 1980's. Inexpensive portable computers have allowed the immediate and rapid processing of field measured acceleration records which can provide insight into the relative structural integrity of a previously installed foundation member. Although the gathering, processing and displaying of the data is now straightforward, interpretation remains at times rather challenging. This paper provides a brief introduction into the theoretical basis for data interpretation and the hardware necessary for data acquisition. Five case studies are discussed which demonstrate the varied applications of low strain integrity testing of deep foundations and the efficiency at which they are completed. BACKGROUND One dimensional wave mechanics, when applied to a linear elastic pile with a length that is an order of magnitude greater than its width, provides a straightforward basis for the interpretation of motion measurements made at a pile top. When impacted, a stress wave travels through the pile at a wave speed, c, which is a function of the elastic modulus, E, and mass density p (i.e., E=pc2). The applied load F, and particle velocity v, at a point are related by the equation F=Zv. For a cross-sectional area A, the proportionality constant Z is equal to EA/c. Because Z is a measure of the pile's resistance to change in velocity it is called the pile impedance.

Variations in water percolation rates through saturated cohesionless hydraulic backfill (mill tailings) have been studied in relation to the many physical aspects of the system to determine the most important factors in causing these variations. A multivariable least-squares regression analysis of 135 separate tests shows that a reliable estimate of the water percolation rate through typical hydraulic backfill can be made if the bulk density (unit weight), specific gravity, and grain-size distribution are known or can be estimated. Equations for predicting percolation rate, coefficient of permeability, and seepage velocity are developed both for the range of data analyzed and for extrapolation. The prediction equations for use within the range of data studied are quite accurate, while the ones developed for extrapolation are less accurate but still give reasonable approximations of flow rates. The equations given are valid for cohesionless materials that are free of clays and micas, exemplified by classified mill tailings. The equation developed for predicting percolation rates is as follows: 1nP20 = 11.39147 + 2.853422 1n(VR X D10) + 0.1747436 VR X Cu -178.8039 D10 X D50 + 311.7034 (DSO )3, (1) where P20 = percolation rate, inches per hour at 20° C; correction factors for other temperatures are given in the text, VR = void ratio, dimensionless, D10 = effective size (diameter in millimeters of the 10-percent-finer grain size), Cu = coefficient of uniformity (ratio of the diameter of the 60-percent-finer grain size over D10), D50 = average size (diameter in millimeters of the 50-percent-finer grain size), and In = natural logarithm (log to the base e). The prediction equation for percolation rate is rather complicated, so for practical use a nomograph that simplifies the solution of the prediction equation was developed.

Refractories are unique ceramic materials, which are used in large quantities in steel making furnaces, metal smelting vessels, and glass melting tanks. They are required to possess high thermal shock properties and good slag corrosion resistance as well as creep resistance at high temperatures. Therefore, they are made from very refractory minerals such as lime, periclase, corundum, spinel, and zirconia. Slags are vitreous materials produced as a residue in steel refining processes. They cover a wide range of compositions and may contain pure oxides, silicates, and sulfides as well as fluoride phases depending on the melting and smelting processes. These minerals exhibit spectacular cathodoluminescence color under electron bombardment; therefore, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy is found to be a superior technique for the characterization of refractory corrosion by slags. Examples included in this study are (1) reaction of fluorine containing mold slags with ZrO2-C nozzle refractories promoting crystallization of the Cuspidine, Ca4Si2O7(F,OH)2, (2) corrosion of fusion cast refractories in TV panel glassmaking furnaces and formation of glass defects, and (3) reaction of spinel based castable refractories with copper smelting slags.
