"A computer model has been developed which is capable of evaluating alternative production schedules (long- and short range) of an open pit mine once the ultimate pit limits have been defined. The model user can choose the best alternative according to cash flow considerations and the particular mining conditions. The model involves a combination of simulation for long range production scheduling and linear programming for short range scheduling. IntroductionMining of mineral deposits in such a fashion so that, at depletion the maximum possible profit is realized, has been a very old problem of the mineral industry. In the past, when high-grade ore reserves were readily available and profits were very high, no question of optimum profitability was raised.However, recently the complexity of both open pit and underground mining has been increased tremendously. The additional problems of continuously rising production costs on one hand and of depressed metal prices worldwide on the other, have been demanding optimum profitabiliy from every mining venture .Particularly in the area of open pit mining, the sequence of ore and waste extraction has now become very important since the size of the pits and of the mining equipment has increased enormously. The process of open pit mining involves a continuous change of the open pit surface and there are many feasible plans of extraction which lead to the same final pit shape (ultimate pit limits). Each of these feasible plans generates a production schedule over the entire mine life, which mayor may not be optimal."

The Clearwater Deposit, a small occurrence of massive-sulphide mineralization enclosed in an envelope of disseminated-sulphide mineralization, was discovered as a result of an aeroelectromagnetic survey in New Brunswick in 1955. Subsequently, additional flights were made over the deposit and various ground follow-up methods were employed to ascertain the nature of their response. All methods proved to be capable of indicating the occurrence with varying degrees of precision. This paper is a presentation and a discussion of the magnetic and electromagnetic data, both airborne and ground, and the self-potential data obtained over this deposit. The attention of Canadian mining exploration companies was initially focussed on New Brunswick by the discovery, in 1953, of the Brunswick ore body. Ground electromagnetic surveys were of considerable assistance in locating and developing this deposit. In the following year, 1954, the Heath Steele base-metal deposits were discovered by employing an airborne electromagnetic device and ground electromagnetic surveys to follow-up the airborne indications. These discoveries demonstrated clearly that both airborne and ground electromagnetic techniques were applicable for locating the near-surface deposits of massive sulphides present in this region. Airborne electromagnetic equipment became available on a contract basis through Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited early in 1955 and was used extensively thereafter throughout a large portion of northern New Brunswick. It was as a result of one of these surveys with Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited equipment in the summer of 1955 that the Clearwater Deposit was detected. The airborne anomaly was located on the ground by means of an electromagnetic survey using a Swedish Slingram unit. During 1956, the region was investigated more thoroughly- in the hope that other sulphide bodies might be located. Airborne electromagnetic coverage was extended and the Clearwater Deposit itself was used as a testing ground for the various methods and types of equipment currently in use in New Brunswick. In this paper com prative data are presented for the airborne magnetic, airborne electromagnetic, ground magnetic and ground electromagnetic surveys over this deposit. The ground electromagnetic instruments used were the McPhar vertical-loop unit and the Slingram and Boliden horizontal-loop units. Self-potential surveys were carried out with a McPhar unit. From the geophysical point of view, all ground electrical methods employed indicated the presence and the extent of the massive-sulphide mineralization with a good degree of accuracy. Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015. Several large falls of ground occur annually in the narrow, tabular stopes mined in the Bushveld Complex. These falls comprise safety risks and cause substantial production losses and compromise efforts to increase productivity. Underground observations in conjunction with instrumentation sites were used to establish the strategic parameters required to describe the rock mass behaviour of shallow-dipping stopes on the Bushveld platinum mines. Existing rock mass rating systems were evaluated using the observations and instrumentation results. None of the current systems adequately described all the relevant geotechnical conditions. Thus a hybrid of several current systems was developed, and the proposed system is discussed in the paper. The new rock mass rating system is termed the ?New Modified Stability Graph? system and follows the method originally described by Mathews et al.1and revised by Hutchinson and Diederichs2.Changes have been made to some of the tables provided by Barton3and to the stress analysis suggested by Hutchinson and Diederichs2. In addition, the logistical regression analysis has been applied to databases, formed using the suggested analyses, for three support resistances and risk levels established.

Construction of foundation piles or diaphragm walls through rocky or boulder containing formations has been long-standing difficulty. It has been widely understood that the down-the-hole hammer is the most capable mechanical means but is restricted in drilling diameter by the unavailability of drillhead sufficiently large diameter and the difficulty of disposal of cuttings. A great number of submersible motordrills have been used for the construction of cast-in-place piles and diaphragm walls and the reverse circulation system employed has demonstrated its advantage of the prompt removal of cuttings. The development of multi-head down-the-hole hammer drill combined with reverse circulation system presents a powerful engineering choice for those "hard-to-drill" ground formations. This paper will introduce the features of the system and some actual operation results in the foundation engineering through those hard rocky ground formation in some countries.

City of Bombay has been developed out of former 7 islands. Landmass of 434 sq.km. of Bombay, started looking inadequate for further growth and expansion of Bombay City. In order to develope twin city of New Bombay, State Government formed fully owned Company "City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Limited", (CIDCO) in 1971 and entrusted it with planning and development including social and physical infrastructure of New Bombay.Hence, Trans - Thane Creek area is being planned and developed, to serve as counter-magnet to Bombay. Area of 343 sq.km located on the main land, is fast developing into a satellite community, for India's overcrowded financial capital. Thane Creek, running in almost North-South direction, separates Bombay City from main land and posed a significant barrier, to further expansion of city's sprawling suburbs, until, it was bridged for the first time in 1972. On the basis of traffic study, CIDCO decided to construct an additional road link across Thane creek to cope up with future projected traffic. This bridge will connect Airoli in New Bombay and Eastern Express highway near Mulund. Bridging the vast, exposed tidal Thane Creek, have always posed challenging conditions, during constructions of these bridges. In this paper, case history of deep open foundations provided for Airoli Bridge is presented.

Barrick Gold plans to have four new gold mines in production by 2006. Together, the mines would increase the company’s output by 40 percent. The projects include Veladero in Argentina, Alto Chicama in Peru, Cowal in Australia and Tulawaka in Tanzania. All of them are scheduled to begin production between the first quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006. They are expected to drive Barrick Gold’s growth profile to a target of 211.5 to 217.7 t (6.8 million to 7 mil-lion oz) of gold production in 2007. The company’s projected output for 2004 is 152.4 to 155.5 t (4.9 million to 5million oz) in 2004. Overall, higher production and lower costs are expected in the early years from the new mines.

Back injuries account for a high proportion of lost workdays in the mining industry and are a leading cause of disability in mine workers. Two risk factors for low back injuries are manual lifting and whole-body vibration exposure when operating mobile equipment. Recent research has shed light on possible mechanisms through which low back injuries may occur, and the results of these studies can be used to improve the design of lifting tasks and seats to decrease injury risk. This article discusses recent research results and how this knowledge can be leveraged to reduce the risk of low back pain.

Provide the U.S. mining industry with technology for designing environmentally sound, low-cost in situ leach mining operations to produce copper from small, deep, and/or low-grade copper oxide deposits. Approach Investigate the feasibility of a new mining method--in situ leach mining-as an alternative to conventional mining for copper. Study fundamental leaching technology that will facilitate future commercial operations. Develop guidelines and procedures that will enable mine operators to design and evaluate in situ leach mining operations for any specific copper oxide deposit.

Cave propagation is a complex process due to interacting variables such as mine geometry, rock mass heterogeneity and complex structural networks and stress fields. The Ernest Henry sublevel cave (SLC) is directly below an open pit, which provided an opportunity to observe and measure rock mass failure as the cave initiated and propagated through the pit wall. This paper describes interaction between the open pit and SLC as well as rock mass failure mechanisms observed from the start of the SLC to surface breakthrough.Cave propagation and slope failure mechanisms were found to be governed by intermediate structures, while the cave shape was largely controlled by cave-scale faults. The open pit, production-level geometry and production draw strategy were also important factors for cave and subsidence growth. Cave propagation was episodic and asymmetric in shape due to the orientation and relative position of geological structures, combined with the effects of the increasing SLC geometry and drawdown from the underlying production levels. The precursors and failure mechanism of a 2.5 Mt wall collapse are also reviewed in detail.Cave growth was simulated using a 3D, non-linear, discontinuum finite element model coupled with Newtonian Cellular Automata. Model results are compared to field observations and monitoring data to determine the accuracy of forecasts and compared models versus actual rock mass response during cave propagation.CITATION:Campbell, A D, Ah Mu, E and Lilley, C R, 2016. Acidic and basic uranium leach plant residues located on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Tuba City, Ariz., were successfully stabilized against wind erosion using a relatively low-cost chemical method. An elastomeric polymer chemical was applied to the dike areas and a calcium magnesium lignosulfonate to the beach areas of three tailings ponds. The water-soluble chemicals were applied with an automated sprinkling system. The stabilization cost was $335 per acre for the 34.5-acre tract.

THE spiral stoping method of mining was first seen by the writer at the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting & Power Company's Hidden Creek mine, at Anyox, British Columbia. Where the method received its name, or by whom it was named, is a question, but it was employed by the Granby Company at their Phoenix mine, in the Boundary district, B.C., as early as 1901-02 after they had tried unsuccessfully other methods at that large, law-grade property. its adoption there was suggested by two miners, John and Steve Swanson, then working at Phoenix, who had previously been employed in the hard iron-ore mines of Michigan and Wisconsin, where they had learned this system of mining. The method proved successful at Phoenix and also, later, at the Company's Hidden Creek mine at Anyox, where some 40,000,000 tons, or more, of ore was mined in this manner during a period of about thirty-five years.

LARGE-SCALE production of zirconium by the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines at Albany, Oreg., is an anomaly that justifies some explanation. The reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium in an inert atmosphere, as perfected by Dr. W. J. Kroll before 1940, aroused renewed interest in zirconium, and in 1945 development work on this metal was initiated at Albany under Dr. Kroll's technical direction. Preliminary results were promising, and in February 1947 a pilot plant with a weekly capacity of 60 pounds of zirconium-metal sponge was put in operation. Shortly thereafter the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission requested production of 1 ton of zirconium-metal sheet, with the provision that it have a low hafnium content. The Bureau of Mines was furnished with a. supply of Brazilian baddeleyite ore, containing less than 1 percent hafnium with respect to zirconium, from which was made about. 2,700 pounds of relatively low hafnium zirconium sheet of 0.080-inch thickness for test purposes. This was accomplished by melting zirconium sponge in a graphite crucible, hot-rolling the ingot in an iron sheath, and finishing by cold rolling. Concomitantly the Oak Ridge Laboratory developed a method for separating hafnium from zirconium; and, in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bureau of Ships of the Department of the Navy, a, larger pilot plant was erected to produce zirconium from very low hafnium zirconium tetrachloride furnished by the Commission. Pilot-plant work on producing zirconium tetrachloride from zircon sand and baddeleyite was discontinued. Production of zirconium sponge in the larger pilot plant of 500 pounds per week capacity was begun in June 1949.

"INTRODUCTION Industrial utilization of the present submarginal domestic manganese resources of the United States is wholely dependent at this time on the electrolytic manganese process established as the result of 4 years of continuous operation of the Bureau of Mines pilot plant at Boulder City and 7 years' operations of the Electro Manganese Corporation commercial plant at Knoxville, Tenn.Three Kids ore provided the feed for the Boulder City pilot plant during 3 years of operation. Hence, the electrowinning characteristics of the ore have been thoroughly established, making possible accurate estimates for commercial operations.Before the Defense Plant Corporation constructed the leaching plant, the Bureau of Mines conducted an exploration project to determine the extent and grade of the ore reserves. Additional exploration, development, and mining by the Manganese Ore Cc, have accurately determined the tonnage and grade of ore. A large tonnage of stock piled ore is now available for immediate processing, and a considerable tonnage of openpit ore has been stripped of overburden preparatory to mining. Numerous facilities, such as power, water, and housing, needed for an electrolytic manganese plant are already available.All of these factors, as well as plans for installation of scale electrolytic manganese plant facilities, are presented in detail in the chapter entitled, ""Mining and. Electrolytic Reduction of use from Three Kids Manganese Mine."" The Manganese Ore Co. kindly provided information on the present ore reserves and state of development of the mine."

Conditioning of flotation feed is an important prerequisite for efficient flotation. This process depends on parameters such as conditioning time, slurry concentration and slurry pH. The objective of this paper is to optimize the conditioning process for the flotation feed. This was achieved by first conducting preliminary experiments at constant slurry pH to determine the significant ranges of slurry concentration and conditioning time. Then, factorial experimental design (32 experiments) was used to investigate the significance of the above parameters and their interactions on flotation recovery and grade. Statistical analyses using ANOVA approach showed that flotation recovery (R) and concentrate grade (g) were affected by feed conditioning. It was found that concentrate grade was linearly proportional to the slurry concentration and conditioning time, while flotation recovery was exponentially proportional to the conditioning parameters. A contour plot of the flotation response (recovery and grade) against conditioning parameters showed that the optimum operating parameters for flotation feed conditioning was a conditioning time of 1.5 to 2 minutes and a slurry conentration of 55% to 60%.

B.A. Hancock It is not at all surprising that causticized potato and potato derived amylopectin starch solutions performed much better than their parent starches. Some preparation is required to rupture the starch granules to effect the polymeric adsorption and interparticle bridging necessary for selective flocculation. In laboratory work comparing the deslime performance of causticized and autoclave cooked laboratory corn starch solution preparations, it was found that higher deslime weight rejections, with attendant proportionally greater iron unit losses, occurred with the causticized starch. These results may be specific to the ore involved but they do suggest that cooking and causticizing cause different starch granule rupture and/or starch breakdown, which have an effect on desliming response. I calculated from the data in the article that the slimes product grades were high - 24.3% and 20.3% Fe when 53.7% and 54.5% Fe concentrate products were obtained, respectively, in Table 4, and 21% Fe with a 62.6% Fe concentrate in Table 5 - using the natural tailings sample, which had a head of 34.3% Fe. It may be advisable for the authors to consider different starch preparations in future investigations. The combination of upgrading and selectivity results presented in Table 4 are not as good as the authors suggest. The authors' claim that a system has been developed to produce saleable concentrates from the Kudremukh tailings is quite disconcerting. There are many hurdles yet to be crossed before commercial application of selective flocculation becomes possible because differences between the very small-scale laboratory tests conducted and commercial application are rather large. Among the many differences are varying circuit feed grades that will occur from use of tailings, the apparent face that much lower tailings grades will be encountered in practice (it is much easier to achieve a high concentrate grade with reasonable recoveries using 34.3% Fe tailings as in the study rather than 25.3% Fe tailings grades that the plant apparently averages), the hydraulic nature of the thickeners used in operations compared to the static system used in laboratory tests, the different size distributions that will be obtained from a plant closed grinding-classification circuit, and differences in water used in a plant operation and the laboratory. The authors wrote that it was necessary to overgrind to be sure that the coarse gangue would not settle with the iron oxide floccules. This situation is likely to be exaggerated in commercial operations where it is assumed cyclones would be used for classification. Because cyclone classification is greatly influenced by particle densities, there will probably be an even greater difference in size between the iron and gangue particles in the plant, which would make the gangue slightly coarser still in relation to the iron. This would make the selective flocculation-desliming separations using the procedure employed by the authors even more difficult and, using the dispersant system the authors employed, greater overgrinding would be required. To grind finer to minimize the coarse gangue in the flocculated iron oxides is quite inefficient and appears not to broach the problem. The actual problem appears to be insufficient dispersion of the ground pulp. In this situation, addition of a dispersant would likely be required to attain a sufficiently high pulp dispersion level to efficiently effect a selective flocculation-desliming separation. Although the very coarse particles would still have a tendency to settle with the floccules, it probably would be found unnecessary to overgrind as much as indicated. Use of an optimum combination of dispersant and pH modifying reagents may also significantly improve the selectivity of desliming. Additionally, although it is possible that sufficient dispersion may be obtained by pH control alone in some situations, it is quite probable that added dispersity was obtained in the reported work from using distilled water. It is research experience that distilled water enhances dispersion. In commercial operations it may not be expected that sufficient dispersion will be obtained by pH control alone, unless the water used in the process is by nature quite dispersive. Overall, a change in the Kudremukh tailings dispersant scheme appears necessary where a dispersant is used in conjunction with a pH modifying reagent. With this change, different dispersion-flocculation responses will result that would have to be further evaluated. Therefore, it is still an open question whether an efficient and effective selective flocculation separation using Kudremukh tailings may be obtained that will produce saleable concentrates.

"Ore sorting has been quite successful in providing a separation means in the rock size range of 1 to 6 inches; a range where mineral dressers do not have many options. The industrial minerals and recycling worlds have embraced this technology. However, ore sorting has not found wide application in the base or precious metals mining industry. One reason for this is thought to be the reliance of most sensors on rock surface characteristics, not very useful in case of sulphides, non-existing in case of gold. Microwave heating, however, is specific for sulphides and graphite (or carbonaceous matter) embedded in the rocks; washing or even drying does not appear necessary. Separation can be done afterwards by already existing ore sorting technology using infrared sensors. Test results on six Nevada gold ore samples are presented in detail. Some simple test procedures are also presented for those wishing to explore the microwave potential of sulphide sorting in their own operations.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing in the base metals industry most often involves upgrading of the ore, concentrating the valuable mineral fraction by classic methods, such as flotation. Since the liberation of minerals in the ore occurs mostly at or below the 100 micron level, the industry has been living with fault lines, so to speak, between blast hole spacing (10,000 mm), run-of-mine ore size (100 mm) and beneficiation size (0.1 – 0.01 mm). The acceptance of ore sorting will inevitably lead to the revisiting of the following questions: “Exactly how much below ore grade rock ends up in the mill because the geologists or the miners cannot define the resource boundaries more precisely? How can the economics of dilution be improved? How many ore grade rocks are lost with the overburden?”"

"Suncor Energy’s Project Millennium increased oilsands production capacity by an additional 95,000 barrels per day to its present level of 225,000 barrels per day. This massive venture included an expanded Mine, new Extraction and Upgrading facilities, as well as, steam and utilities infrastructuresIn the Primary Extraction process, removal of the bitumen from the oil sand begins with slurry preparation and is followed by primary , secondary and tertiary separation processes. The final cleaning step of the bitumen froth is the Secondary Extraction process, that removes residual water, mineral and solids to produce a clean diluted bitumen suitable for Upgrader feedstock.This paper will review the flowsheet of the Millennium Primary Extraction facility, from its recent commissioning through the ramp up to design production rates. In addition, new technologies in the Primary Extraction flowsheet will be reviewed.INTRODUCTIONAs conventional supplies of oil and gas are depleted in Canada, the Athabasca oil sands industry of Alberta becomes an increasingly important source of energy. Today, high quality crude from Alberta’s oil sands accounts for roughly 30% of Canada’s daily petroleum production. According to government projections, over the next 7 years, oil sands production is expected to more then double, and by 2010 more than half of Canada’s crude oil is expected to come from the oil sands.Oil sands deposits consist of a layer of sand saturated with bitumen covered by a muskeg overburden and underlain by silt and clay. The oil sand is mined where the overburden is economical to remove, typically less than thirty meters thick. The Athabasca oil sand deposits around Fort McMurrray is ideal for mining. Bitumen can be described as a diverse collection of hydrocarbons, organosulfur, and nitrogen compounds."
