Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. The eastern Washington— Idaho clay region stretches along the northeast margin of the Columbia basin for 150 mil es. The three better known and developed clay areas are Clayton, Wash., (2 miles north of Spokane); Mica, Wash., (10 miles southeast of Spokane); and Moscow-Deary-Bovill, Latah County, Idaho (about 80 to 90 miles southeast of Spokane) see Fig. 1. Clays from the eastern Washington— Idaho clay area have been mined for more than 50 years. At present Mica, Washington deposits are used by the Gladding—McBean & Co. to make a variety of bricks and ceramic products and Latah County, Idaho clays are used by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. to make refractories. The Anaconda Co. made an intensive investigation of the clay deposits in the northeastern Washington-!daho area in 1919 to determine the existence of a supply of raw materials from which alumina could be made. The greater part of the work, which included systematic drilling and shaft sinking, was concentrated at Mica, Wash. This was part of a research project carrted on by the Anaconda Metallurgical Research Dept. under the direction of Frederick Laist and F. Frick and it was terminated in 4920. V. D. Perry, Vice President and Chief Geologist for The Anaconda Co., in 1952 assigned the writer to make a preliminary study of clay and other potential sources of alumina ore in the Pacific Northwest with particular emphasis on those deposits which might be of future importance to The Anaconda Co9s. then new aluminurri plant at Columbia Falls, Mont.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd has carried out a mineral resource assessment of the Coromandel region, one of the most mineral-rich regions of New Zealand. The assessment focussed on metallic minerals and clays, because these are the main commodities that have potential for increased production and export from the region (and from New Zealand).   Three steps were used in the assessment: 1) development of mineral deposit models, 2) comparison of the models with regional geology, structure, geochemistry and past mineral production to estimate the number of undiscovered mineral deposits, and 3) application of grade-tonnage models to determine the quantity and value of the known and undiscovered resources. In step 1, descriptive and grade-tonnage mineral deposit models were developed for 11 different types of mineral deposits: ò     Low-sulphidation andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag ò     Low-sulphidation rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag ò     High-sulphidation quartz-alunite epithermal Au ò     Porphyry Cu-Au-Mo ò     Andesite-hosted polymetallic veins adjacent to mineralised porphyry stocks ò     Zn-Pb-Ag skarn ò     Cu-Ag skarn ò     Hot spring Hg ò     Shoreline placer Ti ò     Rhyolite-hosted halloysite clay ò     Volcanic-related kaolinite clay   Step 2 was aided by a geographic information system (GIS) assembled from a number of digital spatial data sets including: a digital elevation model, an aeromagnetic map (from open file mining company data), a geological map (from the GNS QMAP project), location of areas of hydrothermal alteration, locations of mineral deposits (from the GERM database), stream sediment geochemical analyses (from the REGCHEM database), and a lineament map derived from satellite remote sensing data and the digital elevation model.   Based on May 2001 commodity prices, potential resources estimated for the 11 mineral deposit and grade-tonnage models total NZ$22 806 million for the metallic minerals, NZ$1000 million for halloysite clay deposits and NZ$57 million for kaolinite clay deposits.

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to give greater impetus to the building of programs safeguarding the employees of the mineral industries from disabling work injuries. The results of the 1960 National Safety Competition are presented in this publication. Mines and quarries that were awarded the Sentinels of Safety trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group and those mineral operations that ranked second, third, fourth, and fifth in the competition are listed with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling work injuries. In addition, this publication presents statistical data on disabling work-injury experience in all other mines and quarries participating in the annual competitions.

The era of the shield-supported longwall face began in the United States a little over 25 years ago. The most fundamental development of the shield in the past 25 years has been an increase in size and capacity and a progression toward two-legged designs in favor over four-legged shields. Is the “bigger-the-better” design philosophy justified? The advantage of the two-legged design is largely attributed to its active horizontal force caused by the forward orientation of the leg cylinders. How do we know this? You might be surprised to learn that shield loading data may suggest otherwise. In addition, what about setting pressures? Should they be set as high as possible? Some people have advocated that setting pressures should equal the yield pressure. Does this make any sense? Is yielding a good or bad thing? These are some questions still worthy of investigation that are addressed in this paper. The first major change in gateroad support was the use of cable bolts to replace conventional wood cribbing particularly in Western mines. Standing support changed very little until the mid-1990s, when Strata Products1 introduced the Hercules and Propsetter supports in Eastern mines and Burrell Mining Products introduced the Can support in Western mines. Since then, there has been a dramatic increase in new roof support technologies for longwall gateroad support. Historically, standing support, including shield supports, have been designed based on a simplistic model requiring the support to have sufficient capacity to support the gravity loading of a perceived detached rock mass. This approach ignores the stiffness of the support and the resulting ground deformation that is known to be critical to roof stability. Recently, a new approach based on the ground reaction concept has been promoted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to account for the interaction of the support with the rock mass behavior in achieving ground stability. In addition to gateroad support design, this concept has ramifications for shield capacities, setting pressures, and recovery room support design that challenge current practices in these areas. Although longwall mining has matured into the safest and most productive underground mining method used today, traditional concepts of roof support design and practice should still be evaluated and challenged. Ultimately, advancements in the science of ground control are made by recognizing deficiencies in current theories and thinking outside the box.

"A well-maintained tap-hole channel is important in order to achieve good and stable furnace operation over time. A worn or short tap-hole channel can lead to more violent flow, significantly increasing the fume emissions during tapping and leading to more metal being mixed with and lost to the slag. Over time, a worn tapping channel might cause side channels and damage to the lining around the tap-hole area. This can result in a burn-through which is a considerable safety risk and will cause significant production losses. At Eramet Norway Porsgrunn, tap-hole maintenance has been done regularly with electrode paste for over three decades with good results. This article summarizes some of the experiences obtained from this practice on a 33 MW SiMn furnace, as well as a change to a coal tar pitch-free binder. IntroductionA well-maintained tap-hole channel is important in order to achieve good and stable furnace operation over time. Metal and slag are regularly tapped from the furnace and may cause a lot of wear on the tapping channel, increasing the risk of lining damage and ultimately leading to a burn-through. On furnace 10 at Eramet Norway Porsgrunn, the tap-hole area is the part of the lining that has been by far the most prone to burn-through since the startup of the furnace.Experience shows that almost all lining problems have started with burn-through in the tap-hole area or in close proximity to the tap-hole. During tap-hole repairs, side channels with metal and slag have also been observed emanating from the main tapping channel. In addition, a shorter tapping channel will cause more violent flow. This can lead to more metal droplets being entrained in the slag, and increase the risk of the furnace not being closed properly at the end of the tap.As a burn-through is a considerable safety risk, and also causes significant production losses, systematic work has been performed over the years to maintain the tapping channel in order to prevent burn-through."

Whereas many researchers and mine engineers have conducted tests on cable bolts using various grouts, water: cement ratios, and physical modifications of the cable to determine the load-carrying characteristics ofa bolt, few studies have been conducted on cable bolts fitted with internal instruments. Those studies that have been done have concentrated on cable response averaged over significant (6.1 m) cable lengths. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Spokane, WA, are investigating the physical properties of cable bolts by replacing the conventional king wire with a modified king wire on which strain gauges have been installed. A numerical analysis was performed to match laboratory results. Loads calculated by the model were then compared to loads measured in the laboratory on 1.83-m-long cables grouted into two 0.91-m-long pull-tube assemblies. Load along the cable was monitored with 20 strain gauges installed along the length of the cable. This paper documents test results on these modified cable bolts. The instrumented cable bolt provided reproducible point measurements of cable load as opposed to load measurements averaged over long cable lengths. Such point measurements can assist in interpreting the influence of cable confinement, grout quality, rock mass stiffness, and other factors. The instrumented cable bolt is a practical field and research tool because it can predict point loading along the cable. The instrument has been successfully field tested at FMC's Granger Mine, Granger, WY; the Meikle Mine, Carlin, NV; the Stillwater Mine, Nye, MT; and the Getchell Mine, Golconda, NV. By monitoring load and displacement of the rock mass using these instrumented bolts, more-effective ground support can be selected and installed, which will lead to safer working conditions for miners.

The aim of short-term production scheduling is to decide which blocks of ore and waste to mine in which time period (shift, days, weeks or months) so that several operational and geometrical constraints can be satisfied simultaneously. Since 1960s several mathematical programming approaches were developed for solving production scheduling problems that are based on a combination of various operational research approaches such as linear programming (LP), integer programming (IP), dynamic programming (DP), etc. A number of models have been developed in the past three decades but some models have limited application especially to geometrical mining constraints. One of the geometrical constraints is block accessibility. All blocks must be accessible to mining equipments on the same bench. In this paper a binary integer programming model is developed in order to incorporate block accessibility constraints in an efficient manner. This mathematical model insures that each block has been open and can be loaded and transported easily by shovels and trucks.

Clean energy production from coal, oil, and gas, and the development of these and other energy sources continued to be a major objective of the energy research program of the Bureau of Mines.3 In 1971 increased emphasis was placed on the production of fluid fuels and chemicals from coal. Advances were achieved in the development of the Synthane and Hydrane gasification processes for producing pipeline gas from coal (page 31), and progress was made in research on solid wastes utilization (page 2), and on liquid fuels production from coal (page 37); Coal mine safety, solid waste disposal and utilization, coal preparation and transport, and fundamental research on coal and related products also continued to be the subject of extensive research. Improved methods for extracting petroleum and natural gas without surface and subsurface pollution featured research on these vital fuel and energy sources. This research was highlighted by studies of the fracturing systems of reservoir rocks, including subsurface fracture mapping and new fracturing techniques to achieve optimum production of oil and gas (page 52). Of equal importance were projects on oil recovery by water or gas flooding (page 52), by steam injection (page 57), on the identification of oil spills (page 63), and on means to reduce vehicular exhaust emissions (page 66).

In March 2002 Newcrest Mining Ltd commissioned a 4 Mtpa gold-copper concentrator at its Cadia Valley Operations in New South Wales. This paper presents the design and construction considerations, commissioning and ramp up issues related to start up of the concentrator as well as current performance and future expansion plans. Commissioning of the plant was the culmination of six years of project planning, from discovery of the resource during the Cadia Hill drill out campaign in November 1996 to project implementation and plant operation. Current resource estimates stand at around 50 Mt with an average grade of 2.4 g/t gold and 0.8 per cent copper. At current processing rates the project life is expected to exceed ten years. The processing plant comprises a 9.75 m (32 ft) diameter Fully Autogenous (AG) mill, a single 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter ball mill, pebble crushers, gravity gold recovery circuit and flotation plant. Upgrades to the existing infrastructure and manning requirements at Cadia will be discussed as well as the resultant impacts on operating costs for the operation. The processing plant was expected to deliver 290 000 ounces of gold and 30 000 tonnes of copper in concentrate in its first full year of operation and progress against that goal will be presented.

This is an update of an original dissertation on this topic by Lavallee, McIvor and Stolovitch (1992). A step-by-step, technical procedure used to measure and improve the performance of plant grinding circuits was adapted into a training program. ?Systematic Design of Instruction? was applied to: ? Determine if training was a suitable way to deliver this new technology; ? Define the technical content of the program; ? Select program specifications based on learner and context characteristics; ? Design, create and test prototypes of the training modules; and, ? Establish a process for plant implementation. The training program covers numerous skills that are extremely valuable for plant personnel, not only in the grinding area, but also for many other parts of the plant. This paper describes how new skills are brought into the workplace through designed instruction can be an effective alternative to hiring during severe skilled labor shortages.

In a typical mining operation, run-of-mine (ROM) ore is crushed and screened to achieve a desired particle size distribution and then fed to processing equipment for further refining. For an operation to be profit-able, the ore handling system from the mine face to final product loadout must be reliable. However, the handling system components do not always perform as expected and production problems related to material flow occur. These problems include flow stoppages, limited live storage capacities, uncontrollable flow, segregation, spillage and dust emissions. These result in lost production, excessive maintenance, safety and environmental issues, and even structural failures, in some cases. Flow patterns Flow problems and their solutions can be best understood by first learning how bulk solids flow. As bulk solids discharge by gravity from a storage system, primarily two types of flow patterns can develop: funnel flow and mass flow. Figure 1 shows a schematic of these two flow patterns. In funnel flow, only a portion of the material is in motion during discharge, which flows toward the outlet through a channel that forms within the stagnant material. Funnel flow occurs when a hopper is not sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the walls or when the outlet is not fully effective. In mass flow, all of the material is in motion whenever any is discharged ? there is no stagnant material. Mass flow occurs when the hopper is sufficiently steep and smooth to ensure flow along the hopper walls. Shallow valleys are not permitted and the outlet must be fully effective. A third type of flow pattern, called expanded flow, can develop when a mass flow hopper (or hoppers) is placed beneath a funnel flow hopper or bin. The mass flow hopper is designed to activate a sufficiently large flow channel in the funnel flow hopper to avoid flow problems due to a rathole. The flow pattern in which a bulk solid discharges from a storage system strongly influences the flow problems that may occur in that facility.

"Omai Gold Mines is a large scale open pit gold mining operation located in central Guyana, South America with a 12,000 tonne per day milling facility. Mill operations were initiated in December 1992 with commercial production beginning in January 1993. The entire operation employs approximately 120 expatriates and some 800 Guyanese nationals and is expected to produce in excess of 250,000 ounces of gold per year. The total mineable reserves contain 2.5 million ounces of gold with a projected mine life of twelve years.The milling circuits feature an SABC grinding circuit, gravity concentration and a conventional CIP gold recovery circuit. This paper will review the mill start up and ""run-in"" phase during the first year of operation. Emphasis will be placed on descriptions of start up problems and circuit modifications, mill performance trends in 1993, and personnel training and development. An outlook for 1994 is also given.IntroductionOmai Gold Mines is a large scale, open pit gold mining operation located in the Potaro district of Guyana, South America, some 160 kilometers south of the capital city Georgetown. Although there are numerous small scale gold mining ventures in Guyana, particularly with the dredging operations on the rivers, Omai is the first hard rock, open pit mine to be developed in the country. At present, this mining operation is one of the largest gold mines in South America.The Omai gold deposit has been exploited for over one hundred years. In the late 1800's, a German syndicate used hydraulicing with subsequent gravimetric separators such as sluice boxes and trommel screens to recover gold from saprolite, a soft, oxidized, claylike mineral which covers much of the claim area. Through the early 1900's and up until the 1950's, numerous mining companies including Anaconda Mining Co. Ltd. explored and drilled the Omai deposit but the technology and low gold price of the day made the reserve uneconomic to develop."

Optimum selection of consumables will be discussed with regard to the facility to meet tentative toughness requirements in weldments. Finally, the development of welding procedure specifications will be considered in relation to the prevention of hot or cold cracking and lamellar tearing.Welding RequirementsGeneralThe exploitation of Canadian frontier oil and gas reserves will require a fleet of various types of offshore structures. These will include fixed jacket types and semi-submersibles for the East Coast with huge man-made islands and icebreakers for the Arctic regions. Both these regions will also require supply and drill ships plus subsea pipelines and cargo tankers for transportation. Clearly the welding of these items will plays large part in the over-all integrity and safety of exploration and production operations.The required development in structural steels and pressure vessel steels, for current and future offshore structures, to improve properties, particularly toughness for lower temperature service, has also prompted welding researchers to develop process and consumable combinations to match the parent plate specifications. This development has had to consider particular aspects of weldability such as a low susceptibility to cold cracking and preventing low HAZ toughness. Current research has centred on attempts to increase HAZ toughness with higher heat input welding of newly developed structural steels.The installation of Arctic region pipelines has provided a sound base for future, more complex fabrications in the most severe service temperatures in the Canadian frontier although few of the installations have been designed to the lowest possible exposed temperature of -62°C."

Titanium sponge, which is almost pure titanium, is extremely ductile and not easily processed into titanium powder. One method of producing powder is the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process, where titanium sponge is hydrided to form brittle titanium hydride (TiH2). Titanium hydride is easily milled to produce powder and is then dehydrided to form Ti powder. In this work, titanium hydride powder obtained from titanium sponge was used as a starting material for blending and mechanical alloying with elemental powders. Firstly, titanium hydride powder was blended with aluminium elemental powder to produce a homogenized powder, which was then compacted and sintered to produce powder metallurgy compacts. Secondly, titanium hydride powder was mechanically alloyed with aluminium elemental powder and then compacted. The mechanically alloyed powder was characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology and microstructure. In both blending and mechanical alloying, the green compacts were characterized by assessing the green density, while the sintered compacts were characterized by their sintered density, microstructure, and hardness. The two processes have resulted in the formation of TiA13 intermetallic compound. It was established that by simple mixing and homogenizing, titanium hydride can be used as a starting material to produce powder metallurgy components in which porosity is a benefit rather than a problem, much akin to metallic foams. From the products obtained in the TiHz-Al system, it appears that titanium hydride can be used as a precursor in mechanical alloying. However, the possible formation of complex hydrides may introduce detrimental properties, and needs to be further investigated. For the production of non-porous components, it would be advisable to dehydrogenate the TiH2 powder before milling i.e. producing titanium powder by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) method. The estimation of process plant head grade is not trivial and is a source of constant dispute within the mining industry. Grade estimates informed by the short term mine planning are frequently not reproduced by sampling the continuous flow of ore at the plant. Head grades are normally obtained by periodically sampling the continuous flow during a day or shift, and taking the average of the multiple increments collected. The standard error of this mean grade depends on the ore variability and the frequency (number) of aliquots extracted. The more increments are taken the higher is the precision on the calculated mean. Variographic experiments are normally used to map grade variability along a certain period of time and the extension variance is derived from this variogram. This experiment is time consuming, expensive and cumbersome. Mining industry personnel rarely apply this approach. Additionally, a temporal variogram can vary from day to day as different ores are mined along the life of the mine. This paper investigates a novel approach based on simulating the grades feeding the processing plant. In situ 3D grade models are built using geostatistical simulations. Grade spatial continuity and variability are reproduced in models that mimic the real deposit. These models are used in mine planning and scheduling transforming a 3D block model into an one dimensional string of values feeding the plant (one dimension flow). These grades have the statistical characteristics of the unknown real grades and can be sampled to emulate a variographic experiment. The results showed consistency and adequacy to estimate the sampling error (Gy, 1998 p 31) for various sampling intervals using the simulated grades. Also the results show a variographic experiment can change significantly from time to time, as ore changes and a selected sampling protocol can become obsolete if not adjusted for ore variability.CITATION:Costa, J F C L and Marques, D M, 2012. The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company's faith in pioneering' this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.
