A THEORETICAL consideration of the mechanics of various water-flooding systems with the viewpoint of comparing their relative merits involves the study of two fundamental properties of such systems. On the one hand, it is important to determine the efficiency of the flood as measured by the percentage of the total area that is swept out by the encroaching water before water actually reaches the output wells. This is really a measure of the regional tendency of the water to "bypass" the oil. On the other hand, the various systems must be compared from the viewpoint of their resistances which determine the rate of fluid production obtainable for given pressures maintained at the water input wells. The first of these questions has been studied and very definite answers have been obtained by means of simple electrolytic models.1 These models showed that, in an ideal system, the percentages of the areas flooded out before water reaches the output wells are about 57 per cent for the direct line-drive flood (the input and output wells being equally spaced and placed in alternate parallel lines), 74 per cent for the regular five-spot network, and 79 per cent for the seven-spot network. With respect to the efficiency of the usual flooding arrangements, they are, therefore, given quite accurately by the above numbers. With regard to the resistances of the flooding networks, electrical conduction models have also been used successfully2 and are well adapted to the problem of determining experimentally the pressure distribution and streamlines, or over-all resistances of specific flooding networks. However, such models do not permit readily a study of the effect of changing dimensions or configuration within a network, since a new model must be made up for each set of dimensions considered.

This paper identifies the need for the development of specialized inverse solution techniques for the analysis of pressure transient data for the characterization of the transport and sorption properties of coal seams. Central to the proposed inverse solution technique is a specially structured artificial neural network (ANN). The most important transport and sorption characteristics of coal seams are butt and face cleat permeabilities, macropore porosity, Langmuir volume constant, Langmuir pressure constant, and sorption time constant. Conventional methods, such as type curve matching techniques and laboratory-derived measurements are handicapped in terms of being representative over the entire domain of interest. In this paper, we utilize analytical forward solution techniques for various combinations of characteristics of coal seams to generate training and testing patterns. These training patterns are shown to an ANN structured to learn the ubiquitous non-linear relationships that exist between coal seam properties, input conditions and the pressure transients measured. The trained networks are then extensively tested to ensure that they have effectively learned the training patterns. In the final stage of the development, the networks are run in the prediction mode. The responses of the networks are found to be in agreement with the input data. The developed networks are able to generate results generally within 5% error margin for permeability and porosity and 20% error margin for the sorption characteristics of coal seams. A number of examples highlighting the capabilities and degree of effectiveness of the network in characterizing the coal seams areincluded. "ArcelorMittal Mines Canada operates hydraulic classifiers to reduce the silica content of an iron oxide concentrate from 4.5% to less than 1.2% SiO2. Sampling campaigns were conducted to develop a preliminary model for the hydraulic classifier. Results show that iron oxide and quartz are respectively concentrated in the coarse and fine size fractions of the classifier feed. The mineral partition curves in the classifier and the size distribution of the minerals in the feed are used to simulate the classifier operation in order to identify the source of variability observed in the daily plant production data. Results indicate that most of the variation is probably caused by unsteady operating conditions of the classifiers.INTRODUCTION Hydraulic classifiers are a class of gravity separation devices (Wills, 1992) used to classify particles according to their size and specific gravity. Hydraulic classifiers also known as density separators (Hearn, 2002) combine hindered settling and upward flow of water to selectively entrain light particles to an overflow stream. Denser particles settle to an underflow stream. Hydraulic classifiers are used for various purposes ranging from cleaning of coal (Das, Sarkar, & Mehrotra, 2009), recovery of chromite from plant tailings (Kumar, Tripathy, & Rao, 2009) to upgrading iron oxide concentrate (Hearn, 2002). ArcelorMittal Mines Canada operates several hydraulic classifiers to upgrade an iron oxide concentrate by removing fine quartz and other light minerals from hematite that is the main iron oxide mineral. A project was initiated to analyze the operation of the classifier in an attempt to identify the source of the variability in the production results and to assess the potential of increasing iron recovery in the classifier. One possible disturbance for the classifier operation is the change in the classifier feed composition and size distribution, while the other considered disturbance is the operation of the classifier. The paper is divided into five sections. The first section summarizes the ore processing sequence for the production of iron oxide pellets to identify the position of the hydraulic classifier in the process. The second section describes the hydraulic classifier. The third section discusses the sampling campaigns conducted on the hydraulic classifier. The method used to process the data from sampling, the results of the data processing and simulation of the classifier are discussed in the remaining sections."

Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 964 kt (1.1 millon st) with an estimated value of $45.3 million. That was a 10- percent decrease in tonnage from 1.07 Mt (1.2 mil-lion st) with a value of $49.2 million that was produced in 2007. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 63 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. About 73 percent of production was airfloat, 16 percent was crude and 11 percent was water-slurried.

The paper point out the Angostura deposit is located in Colombia. The Angostura deposit, located within the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is hosted by Triassic-Jurassic quartz monzonite and quartz diorite porphyries emplaced into Precambrian gneisses of the Bucaramanga Group. Silicification, pyritization, sericitization, alunite and pyrophyllite and other alteration and indicator minerals suggest a high sulfidation origin for the strong hydrothermal alteration. Major faults and shear zones occur in the area with NE, E-NE, E-W, WNW, NW and N-S directions. Analysis of geological results and structural modeling has also demonstrated that there is potential for additional high-grade ore shoots within the presently known mineralized structures. Delineating these structures should result in an increase of overall grade and contained ounces.

The purpose of the project was to investigate the challenges faced by Khutala Colliery pertaining to underground road construction and maintenance. Furthermore the influence of these challenges on productivity and safety requirements were taken into consideration. The operating standards required for the construction and maintenance of the 2 seam road transport infrastructure was investigated, together with reasons why the standards of operating procedure are not met. The Code of Practice put in place by Khutala Colliery was used to view the standard operating procedures. Leading practices on underground road construction were researched. The project aims to discover the gaps that Khutala Colliery must bridge to implement enhanced practices with regards to underground road construction. During the period of study, observations were carried out to determine whether the road construction standards of operating procedure were being adhered to at all times for both road construction and road maintenance. Khutala Colliery has put in place a traffic management plan, which includes safety practices and work policies that must be adhered to while travelling on underground transport roads.

The emphasis of this paper is on the characterization and testing of the slag produced by a secondary lead refinery. This work forms part of a broader investigation aimed at reducing loss of valuable product from the process as well as minimizing the environmental impact of the process wastes. It was this work that led to a critical examination of the standard waste classification tests. Characterization of the slag was carried out using a number of complementary techniques. In the broader context, the slag characterization aided in identifying process deficiencies and thus was a critical tool in suggesting potential for process optimization. For this study, the slag characterization provided a relatively comprehensive picture of the composition and properties of the slag, which facilitated understanding the behaviour of the slag under batch test conditions. On the basis of quantity of hazardous components alone, the slag is hazardous according to South African Acceptable Risk Limits (ARL). However, when both the quantity and the leach potential of the hazardous components is taken into account, standard waste tests carried out by three independent agencies indicate that the slag should not be classified as hazardous according to local regulations. Also, according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) limits, which are independent of the quantity of the waste, the slag would not be classified as hazardous. The standard waste tests used by the independent agencies was the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP), a test which was developed by the US EPA to classify hazardous wastes. One of the requirements of this batch test is that it should be quick, simple to carry out and that the results should be reproducible. Previously, the applicability of the TCLP test to mineral processing and metallurgical wastes has been challenged on a number of points. Additional testing of the slag was carried out using both the TCLP and the Synthetic Precipitation Leach Procedure (SPLP) recommended by the American National Mining Association as being more appropriate for mineral processing wastes. The particular physical and chemical characteristics of the secondary lead slag highlighted additional limitations of both the TCLP and SPLP tests as standard laboratory batch procedures. Stope instability at Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) is a major concern. Using information from field mapping, major discontinuity sets were defined, Rock Quality Designation (RQD) was determined. The stability of wedges in the stope walls was assessed using the commercially available computer program UNWEDGE(Rock Science, 1992). Analytical results indicate that the presence of graphite infilling in joints contributes to instability, while steeply dipping joints control wedge slabbing and wedge toppling in the hanging wall. Stable stope widths and dimensions were determined to range from8.1 to 30 meters (m).

[The development and operation of ?combination on wells?5/ have created new and unusual problems, many of which cast to solved only if information is available concerning the properties of the fluids produced. Data as to the characteristics of the fluids at the relatively high pressures that exist in the reservoirs are especially important, and there is growing economic concern to know what part, if any, of the liquid recovered at the surface was liquid in the reservoir, As an extension of this problem, it is important to Know whether liquid will be formed in the reservoir it as a result o a isothermal retrograde condensation when the reservoir pressure is reduced. The pressure range of such condensation, if it occurs, is significant in the design of gas-recycling plants for maintaining reservoir pressures. In connection with the operation of such plants, it is particularly important to know how gyres sure and temperature will affect the yield of the liquid phase and the composition of the gas to be returned to the reservoir. It has not been possible to predict the behavior of these fluids that have high ratios of gas to liquid by comparing them with the behavior of low gas-liquid ratio fluids at identical pressures and temperatures. Such comparison fails because the proportions in which a component will be distributed between the phases of a system at any given temperature and pressure depend increasingly on the composition of the mixture as the critical temperature and pressure of the oysters are approached. Because many combination wells are producing from reservoirs that have temperatures near the critical point, experimental date on the properties of the fluids under reservoir conditions are particularly important at this time. To rest the immediate requirements of the industry for such experimental information an equilibrium cell has been constructed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Bartlesville, Okla. A procedure, which can be performed in the field by nonanalytical personnel, is given for sensitive spot tests for detecting tellurium or selenium. The expressed need of a field test for detecting small amounts of tellurium, which may be accompanied by relatively large amounts of selenium, has led to the development of this method. Tellurium search has been impeded by the lack of a satisfactory test from the standpoint of sensitivity and specificity. A quantitative laboratory method exists, but it is expensive and relatively laborious. Several other qualitative tests are known, but they require unstable solutions, which must be freshly prepared for use, and a greater variety of laboratory equipment. The particular advantages of the test described are its simplicity and the stability of the reagents required, there-fore is is well adapted for field use. Also, this test was found to be of practical use in the analytical laboratory when screening samples, thereby reducing analytical costs. The roughly quantitative interpretation of the results can save time by indicating the approximate size of the sample taken for a quantitative determination.

The Wharekirauponga (WKP) epithermal gold-silver deposit is located about 10 km north of Waihi in the Hauraki Goldfield east of Auckland. WKP is notable for its sheeted to stockwork quartz veins hosted in rhyolitic rocks, that have attracted exploration interest as a low grade, bulk tonnage exploration target. Exploration between 1978 and 1993 included 23 diamond drill holes totalling 5505 m. The mineralisation occurs in a rhyolite dome complex (Miocene), consisting of flow-banded rhyolite and rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks, with minor andesite. Fifty four drill core samples were collected from six exploration drill holes and analysed by semiquantitative XRD techniques. Hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolitic and andesitic rocks has developed secondary mineral assemblages of quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, illite, sericite, interlayered illite-smectite, carbonate, halloysite and pyrite. The main zone of mineralisation is characterised by quartzadularia alteration, which grades oiItward to quartz-clay (illite, local halloysite and/or interlayered illite-smectite) alteration. Propylitic alteration is present at the southern end of the drilled area of the prospect. Depth-related changes in mineralogy include a decrease in illite and appearance and increase in quantity of chlorite with increasing depth, and the localisation of halloysite and interlayered illite-smectite in the shallow parts of some drill holes.

"New Gold Inc.’s New Afton concentrator commenced operation in June 2012, producing a copper-gold-silver concentrate. During the first two years of operation, various optimization efforts have improved mill throughput, recoveries and concentrate grade. Daily mill throughput has increased 20% above the design rate. This was achieved through more consistent instantaneous feed rate and size distribution from the mine reclaim stockpile, higher pebble crusher reliability, changes to the SAG and ball mill grinding media sizes, larger SAG grate openings, reduced SAG discharge screen-deck aperture size and an increase in the maximum ball mill power draw limit. Metal recoveries at New Afton are primarily limited by liberation in the coarser size fractions; therefore, improving the grind size at a given mill throughput has been the main means of improving recovery. The average rougher flotation feed F80 size was reduced from 175µm in Q1 2013 to 165µm in Q1 2014, while the average operating mill throughput increased by 25%. Other flotation circuit changes focusing on recovery improvement include the addition of froth crowders to the rougher cells and the use of a stronger frother. The average concentrate grade increased from 22% Cu in Q1 2013 to 25% Cu in Q1 2014. This was achieved by redirecting the flash flotation concentrate stream to the regrind circuit and by the addition of lime to the cleaner circuit.This paper describes the above improvements made at the New Afton mill. Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬-based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X¬ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

Ferroalloys like FeCr and FeMn are mostly produced in submerged electric arc furnaces. Typical of these processes is that the amount of slag is quite high. The role of slag for the process is thus essential and specific chemical, physical and electrical properties are required. Slags in FeCr process are Al2O3-MgO-SiO2 based with minor contents of CaO and CrOx. Slags in the FeMn process are principally similar, originating from silicate minerals but can have quite large composition range depending on the manganese ore and its gangue minerals. Characteristic of the FeMn process is that the slag is rich in manganese oxide up to above 30%. A common feature is that the ?ore oxides?, CrOx and MnOx in slag are not only divalent oxides but also contain some higher valent of Cr3+and Mn3+, respectively. In FeMn production conditions the slag consists mainly of Mn2+. This is a clear difference from CrOx containing slags in which both two and three valent coexist in slags in FeCr process conditions. Oxidation state of the slag depends on the ambient oxygen partial pressure and temperature in the examined process. The thermodynamics of slags in ferroalloys, production are discussed in terms of phase diagrams, activities and oxidation state of chromium and manganese oxides. Further, slag properties influencing reduction kinetics and furnace operation i.e. viscosity and electrical resistivity are discussed. This paper is intended to give a general review of current gold extraction technology for free-milling or non-refractory auriferous ores. Fundamental process concepts and some of the differences between the current technologies is referred to. Typical flowsheets and layouts are provided and it is demonstrated that technology for extracting free-milling gold is relatively simple. For environmentally sensitive areas such as encountered in New Zealand relevant cyanide decay and destruction technology is also discussed. Brief mention is made of some likely future innovations. Finally reference is made of New Zealand's previous significant contribution to gold extraction technology. These contributions were pioneering ranging from the cyanide leaching of gold to adsorption by carbon and precipitation by zinc. New Zealand has not allowed its potential gold projects to develop at a rate commensurate with the rest of the world thereby stifling its renowned innovative approach in this technology. It is time for New Zealand mining to recognise its unique opportunities in developing gold extraction technology and again take a rightful place in leading the way.

Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.
