A method of calculating formation water resistivities from chemical analyses is presented which is somewhat faster and more accurate than previously described methods. For 26 formation water samples taken from wells in the Texas Gulf Coast, the average deviation of calculated from measured water resistivities was 3.3 per cent, with an average bias of + l.l per cent in the calculated values. This compares with average deviations of 4.6 per cent and 7.8 per cent, with corresponding average biases of +3.2 per cent and -6.3 per cent, for the two methods previously described in the litera-

"In the flotation of fine particles, there are two difficulties in general: low recovery of valuable minerals and high recovery of gangue minerals. The low recovery of fine valuable minerals is attributed to low bubble-particle collision and attachment efficiencies, while high recovery of fine gangue minerals is attributed to mechanical entrainment through water films between gas bubbles. Over the last five years COREM has been actively developing fine particle flotation techniques with the objective of improving fine particle flotation separation efficiencies.The fine particle flotation techniques with both generation of micro bubbles and enlargement of sizes of fine particles have been developed to increase bubble-particle collision efficiency. For oxidized fine sulphide minerals, both physical and chemical techniques have been developed to modify the hydrophilic surfaces and therefore increase bubble-particle attachment efficiency. To reduce mechanical entrainment of fine gangue minerals, a new approach, polymeric depression and flocculation, has been developed. By selecting the high molecular weight polymeric depressants to make fine gangue minerals hydrophilic and also enlarge their sizes, entrainment can be minimized. By combining these techniques, we are able to improve both flotation recovery and selectivity in some fine ore flotation systems.INTRODUCTIONWith depleting mineral resources and their declining grades, ores leaving grinding circuit for froth flotation are becoming increasingly finer to achieve mineral liberation. Together with the increasing demand for minerals, ever-increasing tonnages of fines are being produced. Therefore, flotation of fine particles is an immense challenge to be tackled by researchers all over the world today."

Acute vibration causes vasoconstriction in naïve human subjects1. Vibration-induced decrease in skin perfusion has also been reported in the rat-tail vibration model 2. After vibration exposure, rat-tail arteries demonstrate vacuoles in smooth muscle cells, similar to that caused by pharmacological vasoconstrictors3. This study addressed the effects of different frequencies, durations and patterns of vibration on lumen size and vacuole formation using the rat-tail vibration model in male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g). Methods The different groups were: 4-hr continuous vibration at 30, 60, 120 and 800 Hz; continuous exposure durations of 5 min, 1 hr and 4 hr at 60 Hz; and 4-hr cumulative exposure of 60 Hz delivered intermittently in cycles of 10 min on and 5 min off. Acceleration was set at 49 m/s2 r.m.s. for all frequencies. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage driven by a B&K motor (4809). The sham control animals were also placed in the vibration apparatus but not vibrated. Room temperature was controlled at 25 ± 1°C. Ventral arteries from proximal tail segments 7 were immersion fixed in aldehydes, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned (0.5 µm) for morphological analysis. Vascular lumen sizes were measured as the percent ratio of the lumen perimeter to internal elastic membrane length using Image J software (NIH). Mill filling is an important operational parameter in a SAG mill circuit and by its control and optimisation it can produce significant improvements in production capacity and energy efficiency. However, it is industry practice to report mill load as the total output given by load cells, or kPa for systems based on lubrication bearing back pressure, rather than the actual percent total mill filling.Ball trajectory is another critical parameter as overthrow can result in accelerated liner wear and possibly liner failure whilst underthrow can result in reduced grinding action. The assessment of ball trajectory cannot be done in isolation as the toe of the charge needs to be determined to make any meaningful assessment. Thus both total percent mill filling and mill trajectory are critical parameters; however neither is reported or available to metallurgy or processing teams in real time or a regular basis.In this study the performance of a fixed speed SAG mill was assessed and optimised by employing mill trajectory models and using the JKMRC power model to calculate percent total mill filling. Power Curves, which correlate ball filling, mill filling and mill power, were also developed. The optimization of metallurgical processes requires knowledge of the heterogeneity carried by constituents of interest. The common scenario, almost an industry standard, is to rely on the engineering firm who in turn relies on favorite manufacturers of sampling equipment to provide the appropriate sampling systems in the plant to perform accurate metallurgical accounting. This sequence is flawed from the beginning to the end because everything should be based on a careful understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS) by the company project team and their expert who invariably would suggest various approaches and different sampling systems.The necessary progressive and iterative approach should be that the company’s project team (mining or other industries) would do its home work to have a good understanding of the geometallurgy, mineralogy and texture of the ore in each geological unit so consultants and engineers would have the best information to start with. Then a reputable sampling expert would recommend which sampling systems are needed, so the company would require engineering firms to follow pre-established, non-negotiable requirements, and finally select the sampling equipment existing on the market today that is most likely to lead to accurate and precise enough metallurgical accounting.It is the author’s experience that when this necessary progressive and iterative approach is bypassed, sampling systems installed in the plant are likely to transgress the most elementary rules of sampling correctness. Invariably the argument is that the company cannot afford correct sampling systems for metallurgical accounting as suggested in the Theory of Sampling. There is nothing that is farther from the truth when later problems will develop and inevitable reconciliation difficulties with miners and geologists become daily routine with impossible answers; as a last resource the sampling expert may be called to perform a post-mortem analysis.The progressive and iterative approach suggested in this paper should be a due diligence requirement for any bank providing a loan for an important new mining project; anything less is most likely to generate unpleasant financial losses; historical, well-known examples are referred to.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2015. Installation of a horizontal air blocking shelf around the inside perimeter of the surface mining drill deck shroud is proposed to improve dust capture. Without the use of this shelf, a strong coanda effect airflow pattern results in dust leakage to the environment, especially at the shroud-to-ground interface. Bailing air exits the drill hole and travels along the drill steel to the underside of the table, where it fans out across the bottom of the drill table and continues down the sides of the shroud. This dust-laden bailing air then strikes the ground and fans out under gaps between the shroud and the ground. The proposed shelf prevents dust-laden air from striking the ground by redirecting it toward the center of the enclosure, where it can be captured. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the shelf reduced dust levels outside of the shroud by 81% under operating conditions consisting of a 1.9:1 collector to bailing airflow ratio, and a 5.1-cm (2-in) gap between the shroud and ground. The shelf was 15.2-cm (6-in) wide and located at a height equal to 2/3 the distance measured from the bottom of the shroud to the bottom of the drill table. The air blocking shelf was also capable of overcoming the adverse impact of vertical leakage along the shroud seams as long as this leakage was confined to an area below the horizontal plane defined by the shelf location.

There is wide agreement that sustainability has multiple dimensions, but substantially less agreement on the appropriate balance among those dimensions. This occurs because peoples’ vision of a sustainable future, their goals for sustainable development, and their objectives for resource management are reflections of their values, culture, and life experiences. Even assuming agreement about the objectives of sustainable resource management can be reached; there is still a need for policy and decision makers to choose from among alternative courses of action, each of which has its own set of impacts and outcomes. One of several tools used to compare the consequences of alternative actions is the Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model. This paper uses CGE modeling to demonstrate how policy decisions do not take place in a vacuum and how policy-makers must be aware that there are trade-offs involved in any decision.

THE stock exchange and its functions is about as well understood by the average individual as the fourth dimension. What is a stock exchange? Divested of the rules and regulations by which it is governed, and the facilities it provides for the convenient handling of securities, it would be in its nude state nothing more or less than a meeting place for brokers. The stock exchange in America dates back to 1752, when a group of merchants of New York established a meeting place at the foot of Broad Street for the purpose of dealing in meal and slaves. The first definite orgarization, however, had its beginning in 1792 when 24 New York brokers signed an agreement not to buy or sell public stock for less than one quarter per cent. commission. From this small group has grown by gradual degrees, the greatest organized security market in the world, namely, the New York Stock Exchange. At the present time there are 27 stock exchanges in the United States and 5 in Canada. Based on the volume of business transacted, the Los Angeles Stock Exchange ranks 6th among them. This is attributable to the fact that strictly speaking Los Angeles has never been a stock exchange town, like some other large cities. Take for instance San Francisco, which supported one stock exchange from 1862 to .1882 and has since supported two. No city, by the way, should tolerate two stock exchanges at the same time. It is an economic folly and a senseless duplication that can be compared with rival telephone companies or competing street railway systems, paralleling each other's lines and always leads to trouble and confusion, and sooner or later one or the other falls by the wayside. While Los Angeles has had stock exchanges of one kind or another since 1896, none of them attracted much attention until 1899 when the present exchange was organized and it did not get well under way until along in 1906.

This circular is an abstract of a manuscript-completed in August 1932, which cannot be published in its entirety due to lack of printing funds. It was originally planned to publish the manuscript as one of a series of bulletins dealing with the mining and milling of ores of the principal metals. Because of the common association of lead and zinc minerals in many ore deposits, and because a considerable proportion of the zinc produced in this country is obtained as a by-product of lead mining or vice versa, it seemed necessary to treat the mining and milling of lead and zinc ores in the same volume.

The paper presents the results of several industrial and laboratory blasting, crushing and grinding tests and experiments investigating how blasting can influence the subsequent crushing and grinding operations. The paper also describes how these results can be used in order to optimize the entire comminution process from solid ore to a semifinished or marketable product. Two cases are presented, one looking at the processing of fine grained taconite ore, and the other discussing the processing of raw milling product for cement burning.

The production of sulphuric acid from sulphur generates heat. The majority of this heat is recovered as steam and is often used to generate electricity. Heat not recovered as steam is rejected to cooling water systems. The design of the turbine, condenser, and cooling water systems impacts the overall water, energy, and environmental footprint of the plant. This review considers a conceptual 2000 t/d sulphuric acid plant with several alternative cooling water systems. The review utilizes Hatch?s 4 Quadrant sustainable design tool to compare the alternatives on both an economic and a weighted sustainability scale.

The installation procedure of fully grouted rebar bolts requires that the bolt be pushed through the resin grout until it is fully inserted in the borehole. Resin grout is a highly viscous fluid that is forced to flow through the annulus between the bolt and the borehole as the bolt advances. Variables such as bolt insertion speed, bolt vs. borehole diameter and grout viscosity determine the magnitude of the pressure generated ahead of the bolt tip. Under weak rock conditions, the magnitude of the pressure of bolt insertion is often sufficient to initiate hydraulic fracturing along joints or bedding planes that allow injection of grout into the strata leading to significant loss of bolt encapsulation. The grout pressure front has also been linked to gloving, a bolt installation problem that reduces bolt effectiveness. A series of tests were conducted to characterize the pressure of bolt insertion during bolt installation under various conditions. Analysis of the data shows three distinct stages of pressure build up during bolt installation. Understanding of the mechanisms involved may allow development of strategies for controlling the pressure buildup and its negative impact during roof bolting under weak rock conditions.

EARLY in 1936, when the American Petroleum Institute issued -J "American Petroleum Industry," which was a survey of the current position of the petroleum industry, and its future outlook, and the figures for petroleum requirements .for 1950 and 1960 were widely publicized by the several oil journals, the impression was given that the petroleum- industry must be nearing maturity and would by 1950 have passed the high' point of its obligations to business progress in the United States.`' Let -us look at the figures which might conduce, this thought. Referring to p. 32 of the report, the total indicated crude-oil requirements in 1940 are 1,099,000,000 bbl-; for 1950, the peak, 1,109,800,000 bbl.; for 1960 a decline to 1,071,020,000 bbl. This downward trend, then established, is probably expected to continue. And this in the face of a crude production in 1935 of 993,942,000 bbl., 38,858,000 bbl.

Dump truck operators are exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) levels that exceed the International Standard Organization (ISO) 2631-1. The WBV level measured by RMS acceleration value, for operator comfort, and long-term health and safety is under 0.315 m/s2 by these standards. However, fundamental research by Frimpong and Aouad (2009, 2012) and field experimental study by Kumar (1999) have shown that operators are exposed to extreme WBV levels exposing them to injuries and musculoskeletal diseases in the long-term. These extreme WBV values in the vertical direction are equal to 3.56 m/s2, 1.12 m/s2 and 0.87 m/s2 for the operator?s seat, lower-back and cervical regions, respectively. In the preparation of illustrations to accompany reports of investigations concerning particle shapes of various natural and manufactured materials proposed for use as fine aggretates in concrete structures, it was found that stereoscopic views of such materials presented the information much more effectively than the usual two-dimensional photographs. With the whole-hearted cooperation of the Photographic Section, a technique was developed in the petrographic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss., for simple and rapid preparation of paired stereoscopic photographs and micrographs. The method requires only equipment which is usually part of the general stock of any laboratory, and it is adaptable for all purposes in which three-dimensional views would be found superior to ordinary photographs.

Probabilistic design is gaining wider acceptance in the rock engineering community since it allows more rigorous determination of risk relating to ground fall or excavation instability. Risk analysis can be conducted by various means, but the basis is formed by either objectively or subjectively determining probability of occurrence of an event. In the case of rock engineering, this event is either instability or excavation failure. Rock mass classification systems provide objective analysis of data collected on a typically subjective basis that also relate closely to excavation stability. A probabilistic analysis technique is presented that uses statistical distributions of rock mass and material properties, ground support fixture specifications, stress conditions, opening geometry, and ground support installation quality to more rigorously determine probability of failure for an underground opening and the subsequent risk to personnel.

Steel is the most versatile material which has made the progress in every aspect on this earth possible. These elements are added in liquid iron inform of Ferro alloys to get the desired composition and properties. Thus, Ferro alloys are important additives in the production of steel. It can be said that no steel can be made without use of one or more of the several Ferro alloys. They form the backbone of steel. Thus, the Ferro alloys industry is vitally linked for its growth and development to that of the steel industry. Ferro alloys industry in India has never been globally competitive, despite its rich ore deposits and low-cost manpower, essentially due to a) Insufficient availability and high cost of electric power b) Increasing ores and reductants cost c) Non-availability of low ash, low phos. coking coal in the country for the production of desired coke with low ash, and low phos. contents, making import of such coke at a high cost imperative d) High-cost and insufficient infrastructural facilities (both road and rail) for rapid transportation of ore from mines to plants e)Stiff competition from producers and exporters of Ferro alloys in other countries like South Africa, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Australia etc. due to global trade agreement which has made drastic reduction in customs duty on imports necessary. f) Wide fluctuations in the International price of Ferro alloys depending on demand versus supply. To over come these challenges plus adhering to stringent pollution control norms innovations are inevitable in the process technology, and plant equipment design, along with frequent changes in product mix, to be more cost-effective. An attempt is made in this paper to address the innovations that took place in the past and those that further need to be made, considering the future of this industry.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.
