"The Strathcona Concentrator is one of three concentrators presently operated in the Sudbury District by the Nickel Division of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Production commenced in 1968 at a milling rate of 6,300 tons per operating day. Milling capacity was increased in 1970 to 7,200 tons per operating day. 7he ore contains iron, nickel and copper primarily in the form of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, while the common gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc and chlorite. The primary function of the concentrators is not only to liberate sulphides from silicate gangue minerals but also to separate pyrrhotite from the more valuable minerals pentlandite and chalcopyrite.SummaryExcessive wear on steel liners and blinding of grates in a regrind pebble mill of the Hardy Concentrator was corrected by the use of rubber liners and grates. The success of these resulted in their installation as original linings In all grinding units except the rod mills at the Strathcona Concentrator. The operation of rubber liners and grates when sized mine ore was used as the grinding medium was satisfactory confirming the Hardy Concentrator experience. Problems developed when the grinding medium was changed from sized mine ore to steel balls in that blinding of the grates occurred. This resulted in conversion of the units to overflow type mills through removal of the grates. The lifter bar life was significantly increased by using higher lifter bars.Grinding PracticeOperation of a regrind pebble mill commenced in 1961 in the Hardy Concentrator. This operation demonstrated the economic feasibility of using sized mine ore as grinding medium. INTRODUCTION The first Dispute Review Board (DRB) was utilized on a tunnel project 20 years ago. Increasingly utilized on a wide range of construction projects, DRB's are becoming the norm on tunnel and underground projects. This paper summarizes the growth in this usage, uses observations and experience to establish that barriers to the utilization of DRB's are more perceived than real and that many arguments against the DRB concept are not valid, and notes some of the salient elements that should be considered in practice to optimize DRB effectiveness. The purpose of the paper is to provide an annotated checklist for current and prospective users. The basic concept, structure, and operation of DRB's are described elsewhere and will not be repeated here (ASCE, 1991). DISPUTE REVIEW BOARD USAGE A compilation of Dispute Review Board usage for tunnel and underground projects to January 1994 indicated use on 63 contracts with a cumulative construction value of $3.8 billion and a total of 60 disputes settled. As of that same date, DRB's were planned for another 63 contracts with an estimated construction value of $4.7 billion. (A listing of these 126 projects is available from the authors.) This success and popularity have spread to other civil projects as well as process and building construction. The increase in DRB usage has been exponential. See Figure 1.

For the use of those who prefer manila rope to wire rope for light hoisting and hauling, the Ingersoll-Rand Co. has brought out a new model Little Tugger Hoist which is designated No. 11. The square piston, reversible driving engine, automatic lubrication, inclosed gearing, rum release clutch and worm-operated band brake are essentially the same as in the No. 1 model which was introduced about two Years ago. The main differences are in the diameter and length of the drum, the width of the flanges and, necessarily, the main frame and overall dimensions. The new No. 11 Little Tugger has a hoisting drum 7 in. in diameter by 17 in. long with 5-in. flanges. This accommodates 300 ft. of 7/8 -in. manila, rope. The maximum capacity of this hoist is conservatively rated at 600 1b. The weight of the hoist itself is 358 lb. It is 21 ½ in. long, 31 ¼ in. wide and 23 in. high.

The selected mining method for the Rodeo lower Zone is slot and slash. Initial design indicated that the stope height should be limited to a maximum of 18 m, thus six levels were needed to extract the ore. Higher stope height in the Rodeo Lower Zone means less development thus less capital required to extract the available reserves. It was proposed to eliminate one level by establishing 30 m and 24 m level intervals. To ensure that no stability problems will be encountered by eliminating one level, a Matthew analysis, based on diamond drill core information, was performed for the Lower Rodeo Ore Body. In addition, comparisons between the rock mass quality of Meikle Main Zone below 1825 L and Meikle East Zone between 1600 L and 1750 L with the rock mass quality of the Lower Rodeo were made

Geopolymerisation is a new technology that processes and transforms aluminosilicate minerals into mechanically strong and chemically stable products. In this investigation, minerals such as fly ash and kaolinite were used as the solid raw materials for geopolymerisation. Inorganic salts were added to the geopolymeric pastes to simulate ionic contamination during processing for building and construction applications. The resultant products were examined and characterised physically. It was found that the early strength development of geopolymeric pastes could be changed according to the nature as well as the extent of the contamination. At a small dosage, the effect of the contamination on the early geopolymeric system depended heavily on the nature of the artificial surfaces that were created in the geopolymeric solution through the addition of the chemical additives. For example, the samples containing MgCl2 and Mg(NO3)2 had shown the same yield stress developments due to the similar surfaces that were formed. The cations of these salts were expected to hydrolyse and form magnesium hydroxide precipitates immediately after the addition to the early geopolymeric systems. The calcium cations of CaCl2 also precipitated upon addition, but the nature of the surfaces of these hydroxides was quite different to those of the magnesium hydroxides and gave rise to different yield stress development. The samples that contained the insoluble salts (in water) demonstrated different yield stress development when compared to each other because of the different nature of the additive surfaces that were exposed to the geopolymeric solution. These results suggested that heterogeneous nucleation could be responsible for the change of the rheological behaviour upon inorganic salt addition. When the extent of the ionic contamination was large, the anions released from the insoluble salts (in water) changed the nature as well as the concentration of the geopolymeric solution and the setting processes were retarded. Oxides, in general, behaved very differently from other salts, indicating the uniqueness of the oxygen anions in a system rich in hydroxyl and silicate anions. The inorganic salt contamination in geopolymers did not show any significant signs of structural change according to the XRD diffractograms collected. The seven-day compressive strength was not lowered by the inorganic salt contamination and it could sometimes be beneficial to the product performance, for example, an increase of 20 MPa was induced by the addition of calcium oxide. Inorganic salts as chemical additives have demonstrated the potential to modify setting times of geopolymers without sacrificing much of the productsÆ strength and integrity.

Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) is one of the most considerable branches of Operation Research. MCDM refers to making decisions in the presence of multiple, usually conflicting, criteria. The problems in MCDM are classified into two categories: Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) and Multiple Objective Decision Making (MODM). However, very often the terms MADM and MCDM are used to mean the same class of models and mostly confused in practice. Usually, MADM is used when the model cannot state in mathematical equations and otherwise MODM is used (Hwang and Yoon, 1980). Decision-making (DM) is extremely important stage in Mining Engineering like other engineering branches. Every mining engineer makes several decisions in daily mining applications. Most of the decisions made by mining engineers are completely instinctive according to their past experiences and there is not any DM method applied in DM process. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the well-known techniques solving the decision problems. The AHP is very simple, and understandable method especially non-numerical data considered in DM process. Equipment selection is one of the prominent problems of mining engineering. Mining engineers have to make difficult decisions when equipment selection stage. As the decisions in the equipment selection have radically influenced the economic life of any mining scenario, these are considered as complex MADM problem. So, the decision maker can evaluate the subjective criteria in the problem of equipment selection. The decision maker wants to maximize more than one objective criterion for equipment selection stage. Among the number of alternatives, the most suitable equipment must be selected according to objectives and alternatives. MADM applications can help the decision maker to reach the optimal solution for the equipment selection. In the mining industry, MADM methods can be applied for the equipment selection because it is a process that includes subjective and objective criteria affecting the selection of equipment among the alternatives.

Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. Communications issues were resolved, better coordination of materials, improved situation awareness during startups, abnormal operations and an opportunity to make improvements during normal operations characterize the changes at the Worsley Refinery. This presentation will review the reasons for the change. Since the beginning of Aluminum mining and refining the industry has lived with distributed control rooms and suffered from many behavioral problems common with this design. When Human Factor/Ergonomic design is introduced to a Western Australian installation a common centralized control room realized many improvements including economic payback. This presentation will review the reasons for the change, what changed and the process of changing the culture from reactive to predictive and what difference that has made.

In order to find the behavior of dewatered unconsolidated strata during the process of injecting water through a borehole, a new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for the real-time strain monitoring of unconsolidated strata during a water injection process for a dewatered unconsolidated strata of a coal mine. The unconsolidated strata water injection test was implemented through a borehole at a depth of +115.83 to +135.15m. The employed FBG strain monitoring system and ground water level observation system were installed at the depth in the unconsolidated strata where the water injection was conducted through two different boreholes. The water injection pressures in the test were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3MPa respectively, and the total water injection volume was 4226.84m3. The relationships between the water injection pressures, water injection volume and the strain change of the unconsolidated strata, the stress and strain conditions of the unconsolidated strata before and after water injection, were analyzed. This paper presents the results of these tests, and shows that the dewatering compression of the unconsolidated strata is reduced with increasing water injection pressures and water injection volumes. Comparing the stress-strain conditions before and after water injection, it is found that the stress of the water injection strata is in tension, which confirms the theory that the settlement of the thick unconsolidated strata is directly caused by the reduction of ground water levels. The high sensitivity and stability of the FBG monitoring system used was able to realize the real-time strain monitoring of the water injection process within a deep unconsolidated strata. This FBG monitoring system and the test results presented are very important for understanding further treatment of settlement in unconsolidated strata.

Magnetic, electromagnetic and gravimetric surveys have played an important role in the mineral exploration leading to the discovery of three major massive sulphide deposits in the Anvil-Vangorda area of the Yukon Territory. During 1964 and 1965 a saturation prospecting program, relying heavily on the integrated use of airborne and ground geophysical survey techniques, led to the discovery of the Faro deposit, which was subsequently proven to be a 63-millionton lead-zinc orebody. Locating the Faro deposit, the largest found to date in this overburden-covered region, involved an exploration sequence requiring the selection of a favourable geologic environment, aeromagnetic and electromagnetic surveys, property acquisition of anomalous areas and detailed ground geophysical surveys, followed by rotary drill testing, detailed gravimetric surveys and diamond core drilling.

El presente trabajo señala el proceso de optimización en la recuperación del cobre y molibdeno en la concentradora de Toquepala. La implementación y desarrollo de la remolienda del flujo de concentrado desarrollan un mayor grado de liberación, y por ende, una mayor recuperación del cobre y molibdeno en el circuito. Asimismo, el descarte de relave OK-50 ha permitido normalizar las recuperaciones de cobre y molibdeno en ciertas secciones de la flotación rougher de la planta, incrementando en la recuperación del cobre de 0.8% y 1.8% en molibdeno. Por ello, es factible mejorar las condiciones de operación de la planta a través del desarrollo de pruebas metalúrgicas llevadas adelante como un esfuerzo conjunto entre todos los integrantes del equipo Concentradora Toquepala.

The Merensky Reef zone, as developed on Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg Operations, displays a gradational mineralized zone, with grades decreasing from the Merensky Pegmatoid Unit into the footwall and hanging wall. A system of identifying a manageable method of defining the mining cut is introduced, termed the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade. Although horizontal grade selectivity is not applied in the mining of the Merensky Reef zone, low extraction of the orebody, due to manageable and non-manageable factors, can contribute to a reduction in revenue, even losses, due to fixed cost contributions in the mining and beneficiation of the ore. A model is proposed that integrates all variables affecting the revenue of the mining operation, including the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade, the extraction factors, commodity prices and exchange rates, utilizing numerical simulation techniques in a PC-based environment. A breakeven extraction factor for a specific cut-off grade is delivered for a range of market conditions. The breakeven extraction factor is a useful guide when designing mining layouts in structurally complex and low metal content areas. Incorporating distribution functions for individual commodity prices and exchange rates into the model provides mineral resource managers with a risk profile for individual mining areas. Shaft areas have varying grade profiles and each area should have individual models run, to prevent generalizations being made about acceptable risk levels on mining areas.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

Domestic production of industrial sand and gravel in 2004 was about 29 Mt (32 million st), a 6-percent increase from 2003. This increase was buoyed by a robust construction sector of the U.S. economy. U.S. apparent consumption was 30.3 Mt (33.3 million st) in 2004, an in-crease from 2003. Imports were about 490 kt (540,000 st) in 2004, an 11-percent increase from 2003. Imports of silica are generally of two types. They include small-quantity shipments of very-high-purity silica or a few large shipments of lower grade silica that were shipped only under special circumstances (such as very low freight rates).

Discomfort, annoyance, or interference with activities due to exposure to vibration is only expected if the vibration exceeds the threshold for the perception of vibration. When there is more than one vibration input to the body (e.g. at the hands, seat and feet), the sensation is first experienced at the location with greatest sensitivity. Knowledge of differences in the thresholds of perception for vibration at the hand, seat, and feet should assist the identification of sources of discomfort caused by vibration. Perception thresholds for vibration have been determined in several studies, but only a few studies have investigated perception thresholds in the horizontal direction for hand-transmitted vibration 1, 6 or whole-body vibration 4-5, and there has been little consideration of perception thresholds for the foot resting on a vibrating surface. This study determines absolute thresholds for the perception of sinusoidal lateral vibration, examining the effect of vibration frequency (8 to 315 Hz for the hand and foot; 2 to 315 Hz for the seat) and the effect of input location (the hand, the seat and the foot). Methods Three groups of twelve males aged between 20 and 29 years participated in the experiment. Subjects in each group attended an experiment to determine perception thresholds for lateral vibration via either a rigid handlebar (30 mm diameter) at the left hand (left hand), or a rigid contoured seat (250 mm x 150 mm), or a footrest at the left foot (30.5 mm x 10.5 mm with 10-degree inclination). For the non-exposed hand (right hand) or foot (right foot), a stationary handle and footrest with the same dimensions as the vibrating handle and footrest were provided so that the same body posture was adopted among the three groups of subjects. An up-down (staircase) algorithm was employed to determine thresholds in conjunction with a three-down one-up rule. A single test stimulus (2.0 seconds) was presented with a cue light illuminated during this period. The task of the subjects was to indicate whether they perceived the vibration stimulus or not. The threshold was calculated from the mean of the last two peaks and the last two troughs, omitting the first two reversals. Results The median absolute thresholds of the 12 subjects determined at each frequency for the hand, seat and foot are shown in Figure 1. This paper describes the ideality of some commercial explosives with the help of the detonation theory and detonation velocity measurement. Ideality of an explosive can be determined by comparing experimentally measured and ideal detonation velocities. A measured detonation velocity at a certain charge diameter markedly lower than the ideal value indicates incomplete reaction and thus non-ideal detonation. Since it is shown that commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behavior, two-dimensional detonation theory should be used to evaluate the performance of explosives. This theory enables to compute the detonation properties of explosives (detonation velocity, detonation pressure, etc.) as a function of charge diameter and confinement. The use of the one-dimensional detonation theory to compute the detonation properties for commercial explosives has an error associated with it as these calculated properties are independent of charge diameter and confinement. It assumes that shock front is planar. Hence, it is incapable of assessing the ideality of the explosives due to its assumptions. Shock front in real situation is curved in shape but not planar as in one-dimensional detonation theory. In this paper, the non-ideal behavior of some commercial explosives is modeled using EXRINT code based on the steady-state two-dimensional detonation theory firstly. Then the degree of ideality of each explosive found from the code is checked using detonation velocity test results conducted at a quarry. It has been shown that idealities of the tested explosives determined by the code agree well with the field detonation velocity test results.

Preliminary engineering for the Waller Creek Tunnel was completed in 2001, but the project was held in abeyance until the summer of 2007. This paper describes several features of the revised design, which required significant changes from the original concept. Most notable is the expected replacement of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) by conventional tunneling. The considerable influence of geological conditions on the tunnel vertical alignment is discussed, in particular the impact of the zones of Eagle Ford Shale with swelling potential. Other features which are described include the wide span tunnels and large diameter shaft requirements.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have investigated seat design issues for the occupants and operators of underground mine transport vehicles relative to whole-body vibration (WBV) and mechanical shock. Considering the ergonomic and engineering improvements made to underground mine shuttle car seats, this study has focused on reducing injury risk by improving seating on transport vehicles such as scoops, mantrips, personnel carriers, and rail-mounted locomotives. Similarly, proposed seat design improvements included layering of various types of viscoelastic foam padding to isolate vehicle occupants and operators from adverse health effects of jarring/jolting exposure. This paper discusses the results obtained from laboratory vibration testing of new seat padding materials in seven configurations at the NIOSH – Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) showing that careful use of configuration and materials can reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. In addition, results for four mine transport vehicles are presented from field data collection efforts at a Southwestern Pennsylvania mine showing that a NIOSH based design does reduce the operator’s exposure to WBV. Finally, the authors discuss efforts to develop and field test seat padding interventions using new padding materials and configurations based on the laboratory test results [The findings and conclusions in this report are those of the author(s) and do not represent the views of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.]
