Estimated domestic production of pumice and pumicite in 2004 increased about 23 percent since 2003, according to the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS estimate of domestic production of 687 kt(757,000 st) for 2003 turned out to be 870 kt (959,000 st)of actual production. The USGS estimated the value of pumice and pumicite sold or used in the United States to be $26 million in 2004, up $4 million from the value in 2003. There was an estimated decrease in the mine, or mill, average price to $24.14/t ($21.90/st) in 2004 from $25.19/t ($22.85/st) in2003.

A number of base-metal operations would like to increase production to take advantage of the higher metals prices. In general, this higher production should not be achieved with major operating changes. In hydrometallurgical facilities, leaching and pressure leaching represents one area where upfront limitations may be a bottleneck to the capacity of the entire plant. An assessment of the capacity of the leaching tanks and autoclaves was performed using a predictive model within the AweSym flowsheet simulator. The model is described, and the results of the application of the model to a number of different leaching reactors are presented. It is argued that the leaching number, which relates the residence time, particle size and the leaching rate, is of prime importance. Finally it is shown that there are some unexpected catastrophic events in increasing production capacity without a thorough understanding of the leaching operation.

During 2015 and 2016, the authors conducted a number of surveys, workshops and reviews of ventilation and gas management practices in Australian underground coalmines. The study was funded by ACARP with a brief to identify gaps in ventilation and gas management practices for current and future needs, and to prepare a road map for change that would assist in delivering improvements.The study found that despite many examples of leading practice, gas and ventilation management is not afforded the attention and priority that is warranted and that this must be remedied if future operational performance targets are to be achieved and the safety of the industry protected. COLD work destroys long-range order, as was first observed by Dehlinger and Graf.1 Dahl2 showed that the mechanical disordering caused by cold work produces changes in those properties that are affected by long-range order. The existence of order has a marked effect on tile manner in which an alloy deforms and therefore on its mechanical properties.L' The relation between order and deformation behavior however, is only beginning to be understood. Seemann and G1ander4 suggested that cold work reduces an ordered alloy to a kind of gruel of antiphase domains. According to Cottrell,5 superdis-locations and pairs of dislocations in a slip plane connected by a strip of anti-phase domain boundary provide deformation mechanisms which do not change the state of order. In general, however, slip may be expected to produce new domain boundaries and destroy order if dislocations move on intersecting planes or cut through existing domain boundaries. The yield strength of an ordered alloy may pass through a maximum with decreasing domain size.5"7 The reduction of domain size resulting from cold work may, therefore, lead to a maximum in strength properties. Flinn8 suggests that dislocations can climb by short-range diffusion during deformation and thus can generate domain boundaries not only on slip planes, but also on other planes which will be those with the lowest domain-boundary energy. It has long been known that the rate of strain hardening of an alloy in the ordered state is larger than in the disordered state.3'9 Also the slip bands in ordered CU3, AU10 and Ni3Mn" are finer than in the disordered alloys. The stress which causes initial yielding in Cu,Au passes through a maximum with decreasing domain size.6'12 A maximum has also been observed in the hardness of ordered Ni3Mn as a function of strain.' These observations suggest, but do not prove, that domain size reduction occurs during deformation. According to Fisher13 slip destroys short-range order and thus the strength of an alloy is related to the degree of short-range order present. Rudman and Averbach14 and Averbach et a1.,15 demonstrated that cold work reduces short-range order in copper-gold and gold-silver alloys. Destruction of long-range and short-range order by cold work implies slip on an appreciable fraction of planes. Yielding of an alloy in which short-range order exists or antiphase domain boundaries are present should be discontinuous because the first dislocations moving across the slip plane meet with the largest resistance.5 Such discontinuous yielding has been observed in CU3AU6,16 and Cuzn.l7 This phenomenon, however, can also be explained by mechanisms not involving order.b The published investigations of the effects of cold work on alloys with long-range or short-range order have not been covered thoroughly in reviews of order-disorder phenomena. These investigations, therefore, will be listed here. They have been concerned with strength properties> 2,3,6,8,9,12,16-21 electrical resistivity,2,4,18,19,21-26: thermoelectric power, magnetic properties,2,18,21,26 and X-ray strain'1,2,14,15,27,28 The slip systems and the appearance of the microstructure after deformation in ordered and disordered alloys have also been investigated. 6.10.ll,l7,23,29,30 The alloys used in these investigations were copper-gold. 1-4,6,9,10,14,16,18 23-26,28,29 copper-zinc. L7. 19. 20,30 nickel-manganese,2 11,21 iron-aluminum. iron-nickel,' copper palladium,4,18,22 gold-silver.4,18,22 and palladium-silver-copper.4 In the work reported here. the changes in properties of polycrystalline Cu3Au were investigated as functions of strain in wire drawing and rolling. Wound rotor motors are used in difficult mining applications where there is a need to start high inertia, hard starting loads while limiting inrush current They are recognized as robust and simple to control. This paper will cover the performance, specification, and important issues to be considered when applying medium voltage wound rotor motors in mining applications. Medium voltage grinding, crusher, and conveyor applications will be discussed. Specifically covered are motor efficiency, speed range, and rotor control. Crane motors often have wound rotor construction, but their load cycle and ratings are outside the scope of this paper.

"Soft technology" computers and computer programs-brings to mind a room full of machines, tape drives, disks, plotters, and printers spitting out financial reports. Computers now have a much broader scope of applications because of reductions in equipment size and cost. For example, people now interact directly with computers to control events. Such computers and associated equipment-called interactive control systems-are often small, relatively inexpensive, and can be designed to increase productivity at mining operations. This is accomplished by improving communications between individuals; giving employees the information needed to make decisions in real time, as events are happening; and giving individuals the background needed to perform more effectively. This paper will describe a procedure for determining the return on investment for interactive control systems, and describe four such systems. The analysis process is general in nature and can be applied to any type of mining operation or production process.

Conference themes are usually chosen by organizers to reflect the current state of the industry. The Colorado Section MPD came up with what may be the most appropriate theme of a mining conference during the last few years. The local SME MPD section’s theme of its 56th annual conference was “The Wild, Wild World of Mining.” The current boom can be felt in all aspects of the industry, including exploration, mining, processing, sustainability, and economic and political issues. Each of the 25 speakers at the conference, held in Colorado Springs, CO, touched on how the boom has impacted each of those aspects. The meeting attracted about 110 people from around the world.

The elimination of the incidence of silicosis in employees in industries such as mining and pottery is an ongoing international initiative. After many decades of industrial activity in these industries and many dollars spent on preventative measures, silicosis is still occurring. The exposure-prevention measures taken so far have certainly improved the working environment dust concentrations; however, the illness is still regularly diagnosed in workers. More funding is needed for interventions to improve working conditions. Many aspects of dust prevention and suppression will be researched and exposure assessment methodologies and equipment will need to be reviewed for the purposes of improvements in effectiveness. This paper presents results from laboratory tests carried out on gravimetric sampling pumps and cyclones. It highlights the erratic flow produced by gravimetric pumps of three different manufacturers who claim their respective pumps are equipped with flow stabilisers. The standard BS EN 1232:1997 is used as a basis for the tests. A method, albeit impractical for fieldwork, is shown for the elimination of the pulsation in the flow. This method serves to prove the method and protocol used in this study. The pressure loss caused air-flow resistance of cyclones is measured. The air inlet aperture size of cyclones is measured. The large discrepancy in the two criteria between individual cyclones is shown. The paper concludes that all the pumps tested failed the prescribed limits of BS EN 1232:1997 regarding the pulsation of the gravimetric sampling flow. The difference in flow characteristics of the cyclones, together with the erratic flow produced by the pumps, throws into question the accuracy of the exposure assessments. It is suggested that substantial resources be channelled towards solving these flow problems in parallel with measures taken to reduce exposure. In principle, the accurate assessment of exposure and dust concentration levels is a prerequisite for effective management of the problem of silicosis.

Numerical modeling was used to investigate the feasibility of using two geophysical imaging techniques, cross-borehole ground penetrating radar (XBGPR) tomography and electrical resistivity (ER) tomography, for detecting and characterizing defects in deep-mixed soil columns. XBGPR modeling was accomplished with a three-dimensional numerical forward modeling code and a two-dimensional inversion routine. Spatial variations in apparent dielectric constant (Ka) and attenuation (a) were mapped. Electrical resistivity modeling was accomplished with a three-dimensional numerical forward modeling code and a three-dimensional inversion routine. Spatial changes in electrical resistivity were then mapped. Three different types of defects were simulated, in addition to a defect-free column. The computer simulations suggest that XBGPR tomography and ER tomography might be useful, non-destructive methods for detecting and estimating the extent of defects in deep-mixed soil columns. The results show that small, isolated defects might be difficult to detect, but defects approximately equal to or larger than the sampling interval (for XBGPR) or vertical electrode spacing (for ERT) should be detectable.

This progress report covers the period from January 1949 to the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 1950. Three runs were successfully completed, and one run was terminated as the result of failure of a cast reaction tube. Including the abbreviated run, the gasifier was operated for 1,915 hours, during which some 428 tons of natural and steam- dried lignite was partly gasified In producing 20 million cubic feet of gas. Gas-production rates varied from 7.8 to 16.4 thousand cubic feet per hour, the latter being the highest production rate yet reached; hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios of the product gas varied from 1.85, the lowest ratio yet produced, to 6.5; and heat-transfer rates through the heated wall of the outer tube varied from 2,100 to 4,400 B.t.u. per square foot an hour. The general objective of the project is to establish the technology and economy of the gasification of lignite in an externally heated, metal, annular retort. Specific objectives include determination of the useful life of the metal retort tube, which is a continuing problem, and special objectives that were established for each run as part of the systematic investigation of the basic variables of the gasification process. For runs 10 and 11 the special objective was the influence of the lignite feed rate on gasification; for run 12, a comparison of dried and natural lignite, and the production of gas having a hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio less than 2; and for run 13, the influence of a gradually increasing steam rate with steam admitted to either the upper or lower reaction zones. In addition, during each run the sulfur distribution and concentration in the product gas and char were investigated. Experimental results obtained using the lignite feed rate as the variable indicated that the gas yield per ton of natural lignite varied inversely with the feed rate. Comparison of the gasification of natural and steam-dried Dakota Star lignite indicated that the dried lignite was a superior gasification material because: 1. The hourly gas production was higher at normal combustion space temperatures under nearly equal experimental conditions. 2. On the moisture- and ash-free basis, a considerably higher feed rate could be maintained at a relatively high percentage of carbon gasified. 3. At nearly equal moisture- and ash-free feed rates, the specific gas yield was higher. The location of steam admission was found to be important because the gas yield per ton of natural lignite was higher when at least a portion of' the process steam was admitted to the upper reaction zone. Heat balances showed the potential heat in the gas and char to be 71.8 to 83.6 percent of the total heat input. The sulfur concentration in the product gas was low, being in the range of 35 to 140 grains per 100 cu. ft., of which 1.5 to 2.3 grains was organic sulfur. Careful measurements and inspection of the 310-alloy rolled plate tube following runs 11, 12, and 13 showed no excessive corrosion; however, some radial deformation had occurred indicating that deformation or creep might be the limiting factor in the life of the tube.

A proper management system of coal mine methane gas associated with underground mining activities is essential for the mine safety due to its nature of explosion. Optimum design of the mine ventilation and gas drainage need accurate prediction of gas flow rate emitted by mining activities. Permeability to gas, which is affected by stress conditions of surrounding rock mass, governs the emission rate of the gases. JCOAL has developed a three dimensional FEM simulation program named Mine Gas Flow 3D (MGF-3D). MGF-3D is designed to predict the volume of methane gas emitted from surrounding coal and rock seams based on stress distribution and permeability change which are determined by 3D stress analysis. In MGF-3D, stress change and/or expansion of fractured zone affected by mining is calculated at the first and then gas emission into roadways and longwall panels under the determined stress conditions is calculated using Darcy’s law. MGF-3D also can set up a number of pre-drainage holes and estimate drainage gas volume from each hole. This function makes MGF-3D remarkable program. These simulations for gas emission can contribute to mine gas utilization plan. Comparison between actual measurement of gas emission in the underground mine and simulation results has been performed and availability for the mine safety and problems with MGF-3D are discussed in this report.

The Bureau of Mines conducted electric furnace smelting tests on sintered flotation concentrate and siliceous log-washed are. The flotation concentrate was derived from the Maggie Canyon deposit of the Artillery Mountains area, Mohave County, Ariz., and contained, before sintering, 35.6 percent Mil and 19.4 percent Si02 + A1203. The log-washed ore was from the McGregor deposit of the Artillery Mountains area, Mohave County, Ariz., and contained 31.2 to 33.6 percent Mil, 19.5 to 27.6 percent Si02 + A1203, and 2.5 percent Pb. This work was undertaken to determine the most effective smelting technique for producing standard products from such nonspecification ore and concentrates. The objective was to collect data, using a small furnace, which would be reasonably accurate and permit extrapolation to large-scale practice for comparing with results on specification-grade are.

"There is an old saying that ""It is too late to lock the stable after the horse is stolen"". Is not this just what is being done by many mine operators today when it comes to buying safe electrical equipment for gaseous and dusty coal mines?The ""open type"" of electrical equipment or even the ""half safe"" type represents the unlocked stable. After the mine disaster, and after men have lost their lives, the lock is put on - that is, safer equipment is installed.For example, an open type of electric coal drill was used in a gaseous mine in West Virginia, This was the probable cause of the death of 27 men. A half safe type of electric coal-cutting machine was used in a gaseous mine in Pennsylvania. This was likely the cause of the death of 36 men. An unapproved, unsafe type of flame safety lamp was used in a gaseous and dusty mine in Utah. This was the all¬eged cause of the death of 171 men. All three disasters happened within the last six months, and seem to have been avoidable if proper equipment had been used.It is understood that more rigid requirements will be enforced in West Virginia. The committee of State mine inspectors made definite recommendation for im¬proving the conditions in the given mine in Pennsylvania. The Industrial Commission of Utah have already issued new orders which will remedy the use of unsafe lamps in that State.These acts and recommendation are all good and will help prevent accidents in those States in the future. Is it not a pity that such recommendations and order were not made a little earlier before the tell of life had been exacted? Is it not a pity that other States will not take these lessons to heart and safeguard their mines before and not after disasters take place?Electric current can cause accidents in five general ways as follows: (1) By shock to persons; (2) by igniting powder; (3) by igniting gas; (4) by igniting coal dust; and (5) by setting fire to inflammable material such as timber and coal. A great many accidents from these causes are preventable if proper care is taken. Most of the accidents caused by sparks and flashes from electrical apparatus would not take place if approved electrical equipment was used. By approved equipment, the writer means equipment that has been tested and formally approved by the Bureau of Mines. So far as known, up to the present time, no disasters have been caused by sparks or flashes from equipment having the Bureau's approval."

The Jinfeng mine is Sino Gold's flagship project and is the second largest gold mine in China. Sino Gold Limited (SGL) holds 82 per cent equity in the Sino-Foreign joint venture Sino Guizhou Jinfeng Mining Limited (SGJML) with a Chinese partner. Jinfeng is located in a relatively remote site in southwestern Guizhou province. The orebody is considered to be the largest known Carlin type deposit in China. Jinfeng Plant has the world's third largest BIOX« bacterial oxidation facilities (790 t/d), treating highly refractory concentrate generated from crushing, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling and bulk sulfide flotation operations. The Jinfeng Plant construction started in February 2005, commissioning was completed in April 2007, and commercial gold production was achieved in September 2007. This paper describes the successful operations of Jinfeng Plant over the last two years. The key events of the project development are described, from the project background and process design, through to the commissioning and achieving design mill throughput of 3600 t/d resulting 180 000 ounces of gold per year. Process aspects of the BIOX« and carbon-in-leach (CIL) operations over the last two years are discussed which illustrate a very high BIOX« oxidation rate (more that 97 per cent) and excellent CIL recovery (more than 96 per cent). The management of the Jinfeng plant CIL tailings detoxification and filtration is described, and Jinfeng has became the first BIOX« processing plant to have achieved dry stacking of detoxified and pressure filtered CIL tailings. Current efforts to recover cyanide from CIL detoxified solution and the achievement of a zero discharge site water balance are also introduced. Many improvement projects have been made over the last two years which have culminated in a 15 per cent increase in mill throughput over the design and BIOX« CIL recovery increasing from 92.5 per cent to 96 per cent. Significant operating cost reductions from lowered of acid, lime and cyanide usage through process modifications and technical innovations are discussed.

In all geophone desigm there is provision for differential movement between parts of the mechanism and the signal voltage is generated as a function of this differential movement. The part that conforms to the movement of the ground is called the support, and the part that remains more nearly stationary with respect to more distant unactuated parts of the earth is called the steady mass. The mechanical period of the geophone is the time required for an oscillation of the steady mass after an initial impulse is given it, and is determined by the effective stiffness of the spring joining the two parts together in relation to the weight of the suspended part. Geophones have been used with frequencies varying all the way from less than 10 cycles per sec. to several hundred cycles per second. Those with a natural frequency of less than, say, 100 cycles

B ECAUSE of its remote geographical position and inaccessibility, little is generally known of the mining and prospecting in Northern Rhodesia. In this rather new and promising region, the development of mines presents many difficulties. Although many mineral discoveries have been made, progress in .prospecting the huge mining concessions has been handicapped by the lack of roads, communication, transportation, native population and incomplete knowledge of geology.

The Appalachian Mountains divide Pennsylvania into two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite. The western region of the the state, where the majority of bituminous mines are located, is characterized by mountains and gently rolling hills. Bituminous coal seams underlie about 12,000 square miles in 28 counties. The anthracite coal region, located in the northeast, covers approximately 3,300 square miles. This area contains more than 20 different coal beds that vary in thickness from a few inches to 50 or 60 feet. The anthracite region is characterized by steeply pitching seams that require highly specialized mining techniques and present unique challenges for solving problems such as the mine subsidence associated with abandoned underground anthracite mines. For more than a century, coal has played a major role in the economic and industrial development of Pennsylvania, particularly the steel industry. Estimated bituminous reserves total 23 billion tons, or 5.3 percent of U.S. reserves, and anthracite reserves total 7.1 billion tons, or 97 percent of U.S. anthracite reserves. Pennsylvania received conditional approval of its regulatory program July 31, 1982. Pennsylvania's Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved on the same date.

Since the advent of explosives, people have been trying to mechanize the process of loading it into long, narrow holes. Automated loading frees manpower from the arduous task of charging granular, cartridged and slurry explosives. An unexpected bonus of the automation process has been the realization of some valuable side effects such as high throughputs which speed up the loading process and higher loading densities which enhance explosive performance and permit hole patterns to be expanded.
