The Cliff Springs prospect in the northern part of the Slate Range Wilderness Study Area (WSA) contains only minor amounts of gold and silver. Clay near this prospect contains insufficient aluminum to be of economic interest, although alunite claims are recorded in the vicinity. Mineralized rock at the Crescent Mine adjacent to the WSA contains gold, silver and lead occurrences. The host rock may be present in the extreme southwestern part of the WSA, which is covered by alluvium. Substantial sand and gravel deposits are present but these occurrences are remote from markets. Much of the USA is underlain by volcanic rocks and alluvium and consequently the mineral resource potential there remains unknown.

The great coal strike of 1902, which confined the work at the Short Mountain colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Com pany almost exclusively to pumping, gave an opportunity to determine with considerable accuracy the cost of pumping the water from these very old, extensive and wet mines. This colliery, which is located in the extreme southwestern end of the anthracite coal-field, has been operated continuously since 1836, and has shipped 7,747,313 tons of coal. This and the Williamstown colliery are the only operations in Dauphin county. The workings cover about 5 miles along the North dip of the extreme westerly end of the basin, with the operating slopes near the center. They extend around the westerly spoon of the basin and back about 31/4 miles easterly on the South dip. The mines are very deep, the present workings ex tending to 711 ft. below sea-level, and about 1600 ft. below the lowest surface-opening. The coal is hoisted principally from the Short Mountain slope, which is 1550 ft. long, with 26 to 68 degrees dip, and from an inside slope, No. 4, 800 ft. long, with 52 to 72 degrees dip. The ordinary capacity of the colliery is about 1000 tons per day, and the average output for the years 1897 to 1901, in clusive, was 297,000 tons per year. The seams worked are the lowest Red Ash measures, being, respectively, Nos. I, II and III of the coal-bed series, but locally called the " Little Lykens," " Lykens," and " Whites." On the accompanying plan the Lykens seam is shown in full and the Whites in dotted lines. The pumping-plant is divided into four lifts, the pumps being located as shown in the section, Fig. 1, and the plan, Fig. 2.

The National Safety Competition is sponsored and conducted annually by the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, to stimulate greater interest in safety in the mineral-extractive industries and to encourage the development of more effective accident-prevention programs. Since its beginning in 1925, thirty-four safety contests have been conducted. This publication reports results of the 11 annual contests for the period 1948-1958, inclusive. Mineral operations awarded the "Sentinels of Safety" trophy for the best safety record in their competitive group as well as those ranking second, third, fourth, and fifth are listed along with a summary of their achievements in preventing disabling injuries. In addition, this publication contains statistical information reflecting the disabling work-injury experience of all other mines and quarries enrolled in the annual contests. The injury statistics of these operations are arranged in the six groups of the competition and through 1955 are the only data on injury-severity at noncoal mineral operations published by the Bureau of Hines. Recognition of the National Safety Competition in promoting safety has increased steadily during its 34 years. The number of plants participating in these annual competitions increased from 210 in 1925, its first year, to a record of 675 in 1958. The expanding scope of the National Safety Competition indicates that more mines and quarries in the United States are enrolling 90 all available means to promote safety on the job will be used. Safety contests like this are generally recognized, in the field of safety promotion, as an effective way to arouse and hold the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention programs. They tend to forge individual precautionary acts into group action centered on a common objective, such as winning the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy.

Granular piles are one of the leading ground improvement techniques, adopted for the betterment of bearing capacity and reduction in settlements of the foundations and also to accelerate consolidation of the surrounding soil. In the recent past, there has been extensive research on the settlement analysis and behavior of granular piles under varied soil conditions. The application of these theoretical solutions to practical problems requires a knowledge of representative values of the deformation parameters of the ground and the granular piles. However, very little information is available on these parameters. The paper presents a new method for the estimation of the modular ratio of granular piles and modulus of deformation of the surrounding in-situ soil from the compression load tests. The load - settlement response obtained from the compression test results are used in the back analysis for estimating the modulus of deformation of the ground. The presence of granular bed, under the rigid plate for load testing, has been given due consideration in quantifying the proportion of load transferred on to the stone column. Based on these considerations a new method is developed to estimate the modulus of deformation of the ground and the modular ratio of the granular pile.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. The granite porphyry dyke has a thickness of up to 40 m, extends discontinuously for about 8 km, and intrudes thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The granite dyke and gold-bearing sulphide and quartz-siderite veins within it have been deformed and recrystallised during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous.   The unaltered granite porphyry is composed of phenocrysts of perthite, arfvedsonite, aegerine and quartz in a groundmass of the same minerals, with accessory ilmenite, rutile and fluorite. K-Ar dates of amphibole from the granite gave ages of 226 and 246 Ma, but these ages may be a minimum due to resetting during the thermal and deformation events that have affected the area. Unpublished Ar-Ar data on amphibole from the granite show disturbed spectra with high temperature steps around 300-315 Ma, which is consistent with the age of A-type granites in the Buller region. Further age dating of primary and hydrothermal minerals in the granite is continuing. At least three stages of hydrothermal alteration have been identified in the granite. Stage I alteration is characterised by high fO2 magnetite-siderite ¦ biotite, which is cut by thin quartz-pyrite veinlets (Stage II). These are cut by Stage III sulphide, quartz and siderite veins, and pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile ¦ pyrite-siderite-sericite assemblages overprints the earlier alteration stages. Lamprophyre is altered to a siderite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. Stage III sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, deposited by low fO2 H2S fluids. The gold contains 18-30 wt% Ag and up to 1 wt% Bi. Temperature of vein formation was estimated from vein quartz fluid inclusion homogenisation temperatures (Th 260-355oC, average 330oC), arsenopyrite-sphalerite thermometry (310-365oC) and quartz-albite stable isotope thermometry (340oC). The altered granite and the veins have been deformed, and recrystallised and competent sulphide minerals are fractured and brecciated. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre.

"Geological and technical problems are often considered the most important ones affecting new mining projects. Typical problems and likely causes are reviewed based on current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement (QMCI) perspectives, giving particular attention to the work of W.E. Deming. As the “system approach” is an essential part of these policies, its characteristics are described with particular attention given to cultural- behavioural, organizational and systembased constraints described by J. Gharajedaghi. Given that poor communication and interaction among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators can seriously affect the adequacy of tests, project planning and execution, and mine profitability, these interrelated processes within the mining systems are analyzed and modelled. The impacts on models and simulations of ignoring typical data, information and knowledge uncertainties are addressed. Adapting W.E. Deming’s Fourteen Points, System of Profound Knowledge and insistence on leadership, and the analysis of mining system constraints, will allow the effective QMCI approach required to reduce geological and technical risks. Whenever we achieve this goal, we will be in a better position to overcome environment-, market-, finance- and community-related problems, achieve higher company and industry profitability as well as more sustained development. RÉSUMÉLes problèmes géologiques et techniques sont souvent considérés les plus importants parmi ceux qui affectent les nouveaux projets miniers. Des problèmes typiques et leur causes sont étudiés dans la perspective de gestion de la qualité et d’amélioration continue (GQAC), en relation avec les travaux de W.E. Deming. Comme l’approche système est au centre de ces méthodes, ses caractéristiques sont décrites en donnant une attention particulière aux contraintes de types culturel-comportemental, organisationnel, et systémique décrites par J. Gharajedaghi. Compte-tenu que les lacunes dans les communications et les interactions entre géologues, minéralurgistes, et ingénieurs/opérateurs miniers peuvent affecter sérieusement la validité des essais, de la planification et de l’exécution des projets ainsi que la rentabilité des exploitations, ces processus connexes font l’objet d’analyse et de modélisation. Les impacts sur les modèles et les simulations de l’incertitude des données, informations et connaissances sont soulignés. En adaptant au système minier les Quatorze Obligations et le Système de connaissance approfondie de W.E. Deming ainsi que l’analyse des trois types de contraintes, nous pourrons développer une approche GQAC permettant de réduire les risques géologiques et techniques des projets miniers et des exploitations. Ceci nous pemettra de mieux faire face aux problèmes reliés à l’environnement, aux marchés, au financement et aux conditions sociales, d’améliorer la rentabilité des exploitations minières et de l’industrie, tout en contribuant de façon accrue au développement durable."

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

The thermodynamic data presented in the literature for zirconium compounds are incomplete. Among the compounds for which adequate data are Zacking are zirconium fluoride and sulfate. This paper reports experimental heat-content values determined by the Bureau of Mines for these two zirconium salts throughout the temperature range of 273° to 1,200° K. No crystalline transformations were found in the two compounds investigated, and neither of the compounds melted over the temperature range studied. MATERIALS TESTED The Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Oak Ridge, Tenn., supplied the two zirconium salts used in this investigation. The zirconium fluoride was high- purity reactor grade material. The zirconium sulfate contained between 0.01 and 0.10 percent hafnium and calcium, and other elements in concentrations below 0.01 percent, A spectrographic analysis of the two compounds is given in table 1. Before use the compounds were dried at 400° C. for several hours to removed adsorbed moisture.

Beneficiation and dephosphorization of refractory oolitic hematite ore are investigated in this paper. It is shown that single magnetic separation, gravity separation or flotation is unable to recover iron effectively from the ore due to the complex mineralogy. The joint separation by spiral chute-shaking table shows a prospect for the treatment of the ore. An iron concentrate with 58.67% iron grade and 51.93% recovery is obtained by the joint separation of spiral chute and shaking table under the fineness of ?0.074mm 90% and dispersant dosage of 2kg/t for a sample ore of 37.51% Fe and 0.88% P. However, P content in the concentrate is still up to 0.52%. Dephosphorization from the concentrate is hence carried out. The final iron concentrate assaying 59.26% Fe and 0.056% P is obtained when the concentrate obtained by joint separation is leached by sulfuric acid of 1% (mass fraction) with solid percentage 10% at room temperature for 10min.

The detection of ethylene in mined-out ‘goaf’ areas of underground coalmines is an industry standard indicator of accelerated oxidation where the coal temperature has exceeded 100°C. If uncontrolled, this naturally occurring process can lead to spontaneous combustion and catastrophic mine explosions, such as the Moura No 2 mine explosion. Spontaneous combustion trigger action response plans (TARPs) typically use the detection of ethylene as a trigger for definite change requiring immediate reaction, which can include the withdrawal of coalmine workers.Following the completion of sealing of longwall goaves at Crinum North Mine, ethylene was often detected in trace quantities. These trace quantities were below 1 ppm and detected via the bag sampling regime, with the use of a gas chromatograph. Any ethylene detected in these instances was not associated with increased quantities of carbon monoxide to conclusively indicate a heating within the sealed area.Ethylene was only detected in a newly sealed goaf and would not remain present for a period following the sealing. As part of the longwall recovery process, the predominant roof support mechanism during the recovery was the use of timber cribs. It was decided to investigate the possibility of this timber generating ethylene.Preliminary tests were completed by placing timber specimens from several species of Australian native hardwoods in gas bags in air. "The current state-of-the-art of chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is reviewed. General considerations regarding the various flowsheet steps are examined and options discussed. Then, individual flowsheets are presented and discussed. Finally, the forward prospects for chloride hydrometallurgy for treatment of complex sulphide bulk concentrates is considered and conclusions drawn concerning the likely application of this technology in the future. IntroductionHydrometallurgical processes for treating sulphide concentrates, in general, have received considerable attention over the last three decades or more. Many flowsheets have been developed, many pilot-plant studies have been undertaken and several processes are now successfully operating. For example, direct ammoniacal pressure leaching has been used by Sherritt Gordon Mines since the 1950s to extract nickel from pentlandite concentrates, the roast-leach-electrowin route is widely used to recover zinc from sphalerite concentrates and direct sulphuric acid pressure leaching of sphalerite concentrates has been successfully commercialized. Also, Duval Corporation operated a direct cupric/ferric chloride leaching process (Schweitzer and Livingston, 1982) with electrowinning to recover copper from chalcopyrite concentrates, this process (now closed) being the only chloride process which has been commercialized for a sulphide flotation concentrate. Despite these developments, it has long been considered, particularly for copper sulphide concentrates, that direct hydrometallurgical processes are in the main unlikely to be able to compete successfully with smelting for large-scale operations of simple high-grade single metal concentrates. As long as such concentrates can be produced commercially, smelting is likely to remain the principal processing route (Flett, 1981). This view is being challenged nowadays through pressure leaching developments made by Dynatec and CESL in Canada and the recent start-up of the Western Metals Gunpowder plant at Mt. Gordon in Queensland (Flett, 2000). Complex sulphide ores offer even greater opportunities because of the ability to produce a bulk sulphide concentrate from the complex sulphide ore with considerably higher metal recovery than is often possible from the production of individual metal sulphide concentrates from differential flotation. Interest continues to focus on hydrometallurgical solutions to these processing problems, particularly with regard to chloride hydrometallurgy. "Different methods aiming at specific energy calculation and design of AG/SAG circuits are used in mining. They include JK DWT/SMC test, SAGDesign test and CWi/RWi/BWi tests. The simplest methods with no secret equations and giving energy required for grinding in kWh/t were proposed by F.?. Bond and J.H. Starkey. D.J. Barratt proposed to use results of CWi/RWi/BWi tests for AG/SAG mill sizing. The present paper gives an alternative for forecast of specific AG/SAG energy. The principle is similar to the theory proposed earlier and consists in cumulative AG/SAG energy calculation using indices of rod and ball grinding (RWi+BWi) without impact crushing index (CWi). Then total energy is divided between two grinding stages using special formulas based on extensive statistical information. The forecast indices of AG/SAG and ball grinding are similar to the SAGDesign testing results. Hereinafter the predicted indices are used for mill sizing of the whole grinding circuit. The method considered in the paper enables prediction of AG/SAG energy based on the test results according to Bond method. The proposed method version was not widely published earlier. The aim of the work was to elaborate cost-effective, reliable and accessible way to determine specific AG/SAG energy. At this stage of method development, it is recommended to use it only for works at preliminary Geometallurgy stage (Scoping, Pre-Feasibility). At design stage the obtained data should be confirmed by appropriate testing using alternative JK DWT/SMC and SAGDesign methods.INTRODUCTIONAppropriate crushing and grinding testing is required to design efficient comminution circuits. It is obviously important to obtain accurate information about ore hardness properties since the main energy consumption at the plant is associated with comminution processes. Moreover, it is required to apply the processes that make it possible to minimize operating costs and efficiently use capacity of the installed equipment installed.When studying ore hardness properties, it is required to take into account that breakage of the material is performed using different equipment. That is why accurate selection of the equipment and the circuit calculation without relevant testworks is impossible. Ideally, the testworks should provide answers to the following questions: determination of ore hardness properties, determination of specific energy consumption for comminution as well as obtaining of sufficient amount of statistically significant results from the tests. The results from crushability and grindability testworks in the first place provide assessment of ore hardness properties and in addition correlate with throughput of the respective equipment. The data obtained can be used for modeling of comminution circuits at the stage of the technology development"

"Albian Sands Energy (ASE), an oil sands surface mining and extraction operation, is currently undergoing start-up and is scheduled to ramp-up to full production by mid-2003. Startup includes the selection and implementation of over 75 IT systems or computer applications which include: engineering applications; systems required to control mining activities, maintenance, the processing plant and utilities; and also systems required to run the company, such as human resources, finances and inventory/ warehousing.This paper outlines the processes used for the selection, implementation and integration of these systems in order to optimize the use of information and to meet the technical, business and IT requirements of the company. The first step in ASE’s approach to identifying system requirements is the development of a business activity model, outlining all tasks involved in running the operations. The computer applications required to accomplish each task are then identified by having the IT team work closely with each technical and business unit. Historically, at some companies, the selection of systems has been led by the IT team or by consultants, with little input from the technical or business units. Typically, this results in products that do not meet the company’s expectations. To ensure a more positive outcome, ASE believes that it is imperative that the company’s technical and business people be closely involved in the selection process.Integration of the IT systems is also key, including linking all applications through a data warehouse and EDMS. Over 120 required integrations have been identified. This ensures the storage of all data in only one location, data security, and easy data and document retrieval for all requirements throughout the company"

Increased coal production, wider use of indiscriminate mining techniques, improved cleaning methods, and greater emphasis on clean fuels is increasing the rate at which wastes accumulate Over the next several years, Colorado Plateau underground coal production is predicted to increase. Currently, mine refuse is deposited in canyons or lowland areas near mines. This study presents information on the nature of coal refuse and disposal practices on the Colorado Plateau. Samples were collected and analyzed to provide information to help formulate alternative methods for reclaiming refuse piles. The analyses were based on determining the capability of unmodified refuse to provide a suitable medium for plant growth. Local topsoils which would be used in reclamation were used as standards. Potential environmental hazards were assessed also. A general cost analysis was done for both surface and underground disposal and the advantages and disadvantages of each were assessed. Several problems were identified which, if solved, would increase the effectiveness of state regulatory programs.

For resources projects with healthy net present value (NPV) and low cash flow volatility, conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis will continue to provide the dominant investment decision-making criteria. However, DCF analysis can be biased because it often applies a single risk-adjusted discount rate (RADR) to compare the value of projects with different risk characteristics. Many of the difficulties with DCF modelling arise from analystsÆ inability to determine appropriate risk discounts and to estimate expected spot prices inputs for the commodities produced over the life of the project. Modern asset pricing (MAP) is a very valuable complement to DCF analysis in addressing some of these issues. Most papers dealing with MAP, however, while academically rigorous, tend not to be explicit in terms of practical application of this methodology in routine project evaluation. This paper has the objective of reviewing the MAP methodology and of demystifying its complexity, by providing a simple but realistic step-by-step evaluation of a mining project, comparing its DCF and MAP NPV values. The paper concludes that MAP provides a minimum, risk-adjusted æfloorÆ value, thus representing a valuable complement to any DCF valuation.

"Fracture mechanics plays an important role in studies of geologic materials such as rock and coal. Yet fracture data are scarce for rock and most limited or unreliable for coal. A testing system was developed which can apply mixed mode loads to a crack tip in many rocks and geologic materials. It is possible to subject the test specimen to pure mode I, various mixed modes and a nearly pure mode II fracture load. The system is currently used to study the mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. Experimental measurements include KI and KII' fracture velocity and acoustic emission.INTRODUCTIONA major research program at The Pennsylvania State University is directed to understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. The program represents an effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners. The principal source of the respirable coal fragments is the cutting operation which forms and liberates the particles by a fracture process. Present understanding of the mechanics of the events which form and liberate these particles is meager (Cook, 1982).Current knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust generation and entrainment in terms of the underlying fracture mechanics is critically needed to improve and possibly control the processes involved. Whether the cutting operation is done with a 'continuous miner' cutting machine, a plow or a longwall shearer, it is fundamentally a problem of mixed-mode crack propagation. When a cutting tool interacts with coal, it causes numerous cracks to propagate through the intact material. Numerous larger fragments are broken free, but another quantity of undesirable fine fragments is also created. The formation of these respirable fragments may be a direct result of the crack propagation process; hence, a thorough understanding of the fracture mechanics of coal is required to minimize production of the unwanted fine fragments.In most rock engineering applications, the rock material properties are of secondary importance to the rock mass properties; however, for rock fragmentation and rock cutting problems, it is rock material properties such as fracture toughness which are of prime interest (Bieniawski, 1980). Several rock cutting and rock failure theories have been proposed, but it is only very recently that fracture mechanics concepts have been successfully applied to the study of rock cutting mechanics. All cutting models seek to predict the cutting forces and the cutter geometry necessary to cause rock breakage and chip formation given some fundamental mechanical properties ~f the rock. Such models have wide applications in drilling, tunnel boring and mining problems. Nelson et al., (1985, 1986) has provided a very useful correlation between the laboratory measured fracture mechanics properties of rock and the performance of the disk cutters on tunnel boring machines."

Ion exchange (IX) has been in use for a long time, references to IX are made in The Bible, Exodus Chapter 15 vs. 22-25 ?and the waters were made sweet?.1, 2 Aristotle noted a reduction in the salt content of water when passed through certain types of sand, a phenomena probably associated with ion exchange characteristics of zeolites. Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ?
