This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2010 draws upon available information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2010: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2010, as compiled by the USGS, and 3) regional events including economic, social and political conditions that affected exploration activities. These were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists.

Quarry accidents in 1963 caused 61 fatal and 3,468 nonfatal injuries which occurred at respective frequency rates of 0.31 and 17.91 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality record in 1963 was better than in 1962 but was appreciably worse than in 1.961. For nonfatal injuries, the 1963 record was slightly worse than in 1962 but was better than in 1961. The injury--severity rate of 2,913 days lost or charged per million man-hours in 1963 was better than that of 3,046 in 1962, the first year for which such data became available. The average severity of all injuries in 1963 was 160 days lost or charged per injury, 15 less than in 1962. An average of 91,960 men were at work on active days in 1963 and these men had an aggregate worktime of 193.7 million man-hours during the year.

The Bureau of Mines is using model ducts lined with coal to study the nature of coal mine fires, their rate of propagation, their influence on ventilation airflows, and their response to sealing and other fire suppression measures. For scale-modeling purposes these studies are being carried out in various size ducts; eventually they will include a full-size mine entry in the Bruceton multiple-entry Experimental Mine. To date, work has been carried out in an insulated 9.l-m-long duct with a 5-cm thickness of coal leaving a 23-by 23-cm square opening for air ventilation. Fire propagation processes in this duct were mainly transient in nature owing to the relatively small length-to-diameter ratio. This report describes the experimental equipment employed and the results obtained to date.

RESUME : Le comportement mécanique partiellement saturé du minerai de fer a été étudié à partir d’essais de compression simple sur des éprouvettes à pression capillaire imposée par les solutions salines. Les échantillons restent peu saturés (32 %) même pour une humidité relative de 94 %, du fait de la présence de mésopores. Jusqu’à 90 % d’humidité relative la résistance diminue régulièrement. De 90 % à 94 % une forte chute est observée et pourrait être liée à la fois aux effets capillaires et à l’hydratation de certains minéraux. Le cycle hydrique subit par la roche dans la mine a été modélisé en 1D à l’aide d’un code de calcul entièrement couplé pour les milieux poreux partiellement saturés. Les calculs ont montré notamment une diminution importante en paroi des contraintes totales au cours de la phase de désaturation et une augmentation importante au cours de la phase de resaturation. Ces variations pourraient induire un endommagement du massif et être à l’origine d’instabilités, et soulignent l’intérêt d’une modélisation avec une géométrie plus adaptée. ABSTRACT : The partially saturated mechanical behavior of iron ore has been studied from uniaxial compression tests on samples in which the suction is imposed with aqueous solutions. Samples are little saturated (32 %) even for a 94 % relative humidity because pores are too large. Up to 90 % relative humidity the strength decreases regularly. From 90 % to 94 % a great decrease is observed ; it could be explained by the capillary effects and the moisturizing of some minerals. The hydrous cycle imposed to the rocks in the mine has been modeled with an 1D fully coupled code for partially saturated porous media. The computations have shown an important decrease in the total stresses at the wall during the desaturation stage and an important increase during the re-saturation stage. These variations could induce a rock mass damage and instabilities, and highlight the necessity of a modeling with a well-adapted geometry. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Das mechanische Verhalten von teilweise gesättigten Eisenerz wird durch einachsige Druckversuche untergesucht. Die Prüfkörper haben einen durch Salzlösungen gestimmten kapillarischen Druck. Sie bleiben kaum gesättigt (32 %), sogar bei einer relativen Feuchtigkeit von 94 %, aufgrund der Anwesenheit von Mesoporen. Bis eine relative Feuchtigkeit von 90 % verringert sich gleichmässig die Druckfestigkeit und zwischen 90 % und 94 % merkt man eine starke Abnahme in Verbindung, möglicherweise, mit kapillarischen Effekten und Hydratation von bestimmten Mineralen. Die nümerische 1D Modellisierung des gezwungenen Wasserzyklus im Stein der Mine ist mit einem für porösen Medien ganz vernetzten Rechnungcode geführt. Sie zeigt besonders ein bedeutendes Sinken der Gesamtspannung während der Entwässerung und eine bedeutende Steigerung während der Sättigung. Diese Veränderungen könnten die Beschädigung des Gesteines herbeiführen und die Grundlage von Unstabilität sein. Following the theme “Leading Mineral Processing into the 21st Century Through Advanced Technology,”186 speakers from 28 countries covered research and development activities and innovative processes. Subjects included comminution and simulation control, physical and chemical processing, flotation practices and fundamentals, precious metals processing and mineral waste and the environment.

Twenty six samples of carbonaceous gold ores and associated rocks from outcrop and mine localities in northcentral Nevada were analyzed for concentrations of major. minor, and trace elements, total sulfur, and organic carbon. Q-mode factor analysis was used to define six distinctive carbonate, organic, and detrital associations of elements, and to group samples based on these associations. The trace metals that have clearly enriched the organic-carbon-rich samples are V, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Mo, although few of the samples could be considered "metal-rich" when compared to other organic-carbon-rich black shales. Rock-Eval pyrolysis was used to evaluate thermal maturity and hydrocarbon yield of the samples. Unfortunately, most samples were too thermally altered to be suitable for routine organic geochemical characterization of organic matter. The 813C values of organic carbon in rocks from different deposits have a trimodal distribution, but there is no clear distinction between the three groups of deposits that can be related to age, thermal history, or depositional environment.

The seismic design of extended pile shafts for the combined effects of dynamic shaking and liquefaction-induced lateral spreading is investigated using nonlinear dynamic finite element analyses (NDA). Results of NDA parameter studies are used to illustrate how inertia and lateral spreading loads combine during shaking. The NDA results are used to evaluate equivalent static analysis (ESA) methods. Implications for design practice are discussed.

The Apox limestone quarry, and crushing plant are in sec. 26, T. 18 S., R. 63 E., M.D.B.&M., Clark County, Nov., approximately 18 milos northeast of Las Vegas, adjacent to U. S. Highway 91 (fig. 1). The Henderson calcining plant is Inc., in sec. 13, T. 22 S., R. 62 E., 14 miles southeast of Las Vegas on U. in a reduction unit of Basic Magnesium, M.D.B. &M., Clark County, Nev., about S. El presente trabajo describe el planeamiento estratégico para el sostenimiento de la sociedad minera El Brocal a través de la gestión en el trabajo organizacional. Su principal objetivo es aumentar la productividad y la reducción de costos de minado y la planta concentradora. Para ello, se tomó el modelo de planeamiento estratégico desarrollado por Fred David y se realiza el análisis y diagnóstico interno de la empresa, a partir de los antecedentes, situación actual de la empresa, evaluación de la misión, objetivos actuales y cadena de valor de la empresa, luego se clasifica a la industria minera y se integra los resultados obtenidos, la matriz de evaluación del factor externo (EFE) y la matriz de evaluación del factor interno (EFI); para así elaborar la matriz (FODA) a partir de la cual se formula as estrategias por seguir. Finalmente, se redefine la misión de futura de SMEB y se ejecuta las estrategias y las acciones en las áreas funcionales.

Management of mine and tailings reclamation activities by surface mining oil sands operations in Alberta, Canada is experiencing increased national and international attention. Of particular concern is the ability of existing mines to execute and fund reclamation activities. Concern stems from a lack of demonstrated tailings reclamation technologies, perceptions of a poor track-record of reclamation activity by industry, and a lack of transparency with respect to the potential cost of reclamation activities relative to the monies secured in Alberta?s Environmental Protection Security Fund (EPSF). Limited information is publicly available regarding reclamation costs and technologies. Available data typically comes from disparate sources. This paper examines the expected costs of oil sands reclamation activities through a study of corporate Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) liabilities, the Province of Alberta?sEPSF, and published data relating to reclamation costs.Issues relating to current liability funding are introduced.

In recent years, increasing attention has been focused on the hydrometallurgical treatment of base metals feeds, especially nickel laterites and polymetallic sulphides. One approach that has received some attention is the use of high?concentration chloride solutions (brines), which are now showing some promise after initial setbacks. Iron is usually the major component in the base metal feed to such processes, and if physical means cannot be used to remove it, then the iron concentration in the pregnant leach solution is always significant. This paper presents some of the background theory on the hydrolysis of iron in high-strength (>3M) chloride brines, and discusses the roles of temperature, solution concentration and free acidity. It is shown that the system is complex, but that crystalline and readily-filterable hematite can be generated, and that the system has a low energy requirement.

The first metal-mine accident-prevention course was prepared and published in 1942-45 as a series of seven miners' circulars (Nos. 51-57). The scope of the course has been broadened, revised, and brought up to date, and it is being published as a similar series of seven miners' circulars on accident prevention in metal and nonmetallic mines. These circulars are: 1. Accident Statistics (Miners' Circular 51), dealing with general statistics on accidents and injuries at metal and nonmetallic mines, including causes, costs, and the uses of investigations and reports of all accidents.

Mechanical mining is steadily gaining usage in the mining industry. A variety of machines currently finds employment: tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, continuous miners, surface miners, and augers. These machines have advantages compared to drill and blast mining methods, including increased safety, lower cost, uniform muck size, and accurately sized openings. A century of experience with mechanical methods has already paid dividends to the coal industry. Current trends guarantee eventual development of true general-purpose hardrock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become integrated mining systems and will determine the design of mines, when several significant challenges have been met.

Results of linear correlations of two to four variables by the least-squares method are presented. The variables include 63 parameters representing coal composition, coal plasticity, and coke strength. The composition parameters are on chemical analyses; the plasticity parameters, on three plastometer and dilatometer tests and four miscellaneous tests; and the coke-strength parameters, on three ASTM indices. Seventy-two to eighty-four plastic coals were used in the plasticity and carbonization tests, which together form the basis of this report; 43 nonplastic or weakly plastic coals were used in the coal-band studies. Plots of relations between volatile matter, carbon, and oxygen contents of 1,860 U.S. coals and the 84 coals used are shown. Similar plots between volatile matter and hydrogen or atomic H/C of the 84 coals are also included. Significances of regression coefficient signs for coal composition parameters in the significant correlations found are discussed. Based on these significances, the following relations are shown: (a) coke strength versus average aromaticity, or mineral matter content, of the parent coal; (b) characteristic temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers, the free-swelling index, or the Gray-King type versus average hydroaromaticity of the coal; and (c) nontemperature parameters of the plastometer and dilatometers versus the physical properties of a certain group of compounds from thermal decomposition of coal. Similarly, significances between the positions of coals in the coal band and the aforementioned relations are also discussed. A structural theory of coal plasticity is proposed. Applications of the correlation results are discussed. Composition parameters, such as carbon, atomic H/C, and calorific value may be used as a basis for selecting coking coals for stronger coke. Plasticity parameters, such as the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers and the free-swelling index, may be used for the same purpose. Based on the best correlations found, coke-strength indices may be estimated to within 4 to 8 units of the observed values; the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometer tests, 5° to 10° C.; and the free-swelling index, within 1 unit. Accuracies of all these estimated values are examined, based on the experimental errors of the data involved. Finally, estimations of plasticity parameters from one test with those from others are shown.

The relationship between comminution testwork results and the milling circuit that is subsequently selected is not a direct one and frequently involves recourse to databases of past test results. This in itself reflects the lack of a systematic engineering approach in the design process. This paper reviews comminution tests for SAG mill design in an attempt to identify where the essential information comes from that will be used in mill selection. The conclusion is that results from traditional test methods, including obscure and little used procedures like the Mokken test, are more valuable from an engineering perspective than parameters for breakage rate based modelling. Suggestions are made on ways in which existing test procedures can be enhanced in order to generate parameters that can be directly related to characteristics of the milling circuit being designed.

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.
