"A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at the Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine.This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results. INTRODUCTIONStudy of the behaviour of an ore during concentration by flotation process starts, in general, with a series of tests in laboratory cells. Given the discontinuous nature of these tests, the information obtained by such a study is somewhat limited. It has long been recognized that laboratory test results are not always reproducible in pilot plant tests and subsequently, the pilot plant results do not always predict plant performance. The differences are often blamed on batch vs continuous operations, grinding media, size distribution, aging (oxidation), water quality, equipment, operator's skills, etc."

Stability analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is Limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this U.S. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

A study has been conducted to control iron in copper electrolyte streams using Eichrom Industries’s new Monophosphonic /sulphonic acid resin. The resin strongly and selectively extracts ferric ion over copper and cobalt from highly acidic copper electrolytes. The resin has a loading capacity of 27 g/L of iron and can be readily regenerated. In addition, the new resin can be easily synthesized using commercially available starting materials. This paper presents the experimental results for iron control in copper electrolyte streams using the new resin and discusses its potential applications to other hydro-metallurgical streams.

The Boston Consolidated mine is situated in the Bingham mining district, Salt Lake County; Utah (fig. 1). The property has had a noteworthy production of cupriferous, gold-bearing, pyritic ore in addition to lead ore. The Bureau of Mines established a diamond-drilling development project on the property in September 1943 with the primary objective of determining the continuity of a mineralized zone in the Commercial limestone below and to the northeast of the 800-foot level (fig.2). Examination of the geologic feature at the property previous to drilling indicated that the mineralized limestone horizon would continue belay the 800-foot level, but with a flatter dip than disclosed above this level. During the project period, 36 holes totaling 4,001 feet were drilled from underground stations outlining the zone below the 800-foot level (figs. 2 and 3).

After conducting laboratory ore sorting testwork on samples of a low grade nickel ore stockpile at Western Areas’ Flying Fox nickel mine, a mobile crushing, screening and ore sorting plant was located adjacent to the stockpile. An initial two month trial of the ore sorter program proved successful and was extended to process the entire Flying Fox low grade stockpile in a further four month campaign. A total of 167 660 t of low grade ore was processed, providing highly upgraded feed trucked 26 km to the Cosmic Boy concentrator. A more than three-fold grade increase was achieved on ore sorter accepts. The moderately upgraded fines that by-passed the mobile ore sorter were also subsequently blended into plant feed. This paper describes the mineralogy of the Flying Fox low grade ore, the mobile ore sorting campaign and provides some commentary on the economic and environmental benefits achieved in the ore sorting campaign. The ore sorting campaign demonstrated the benefits of being able to utilise mobile ore sorting equipment temporarily located adjacent to sub-economic low grade stockpiles in order to effectively treat these stockpiles and produce viable plant feed.CITATION:Parry, A and Fitzmaurice, C, 2018. The Morenci concentrate leach plant construction was completed and successfully commissioned in October 2007. The plant was designed to operate at medium temperature, 160ºC and pressure, 2,100 kPa. The concentrate leach plant utilized many innovative design features. This paper examines the first year?s operation, the challenges, the successes and the lessons learned. The future plans for Morenci concentrate leaching will also be presented.

Crown ethers are gaining importance in separation technology specifically for rare earth elements (REE, La to Lu plus Y) and precious metals (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh and Ir) due to their specific binding ability, metal complex stability and high extraction efficiency. The selectivity of crown ethers in extraction of these metals depends on different factors, including the cavity diameter and nature of a donor atom of the crown ether, size and charge of the metal ion, diluents and counter ion. Demand for strategic REE and precious metals are consistently increasing in the world while the separation of these metals is most challenging tasks. In this paper, the use of crown ethers in separation of REE and precious metals, reaction mechanisms and simplified process flowsheets will be elucidated. New reagents with high selectivity for the separation of these metals are further expected to produce high purity metals.

Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within daciteporphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding meta sediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in meta sediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna.Several new gold discoveries were made in older EarlyTertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

INTRODUCTION In radon dosimetry diffusion chambers with passive [a]-detectors are now in current use to investigate the long-term accumulated indoor exposure of radon and daughters. For the diffusion chamber developed at Karlsruhe the electrochemical etching technique (ECE) was applied to reveal [a]-particles in polycarbonate plastic detectors. Compared to conventional etching, the main advantages of the ECE are the large track diameter, simple track counting in a single field of about 1 cm2, stability of the latent tracks to humidity and temperature and ability for a long-term accumulation up to 1 year. The electrochemical etching system was designed to etch in one run about 101 foils by using a 200 W high voltage generator. The commercial available radon dosimeter system is applied for a country wide program of measuring radon in dwellings. Because of an increasing interest of radon monitoring in mines, environmental monitoring and personnel dosimetry the properties of several track etch detectors have been studied. In the comparative study, Makrofol E, LR 115 and CR 39 were used in the diffusion chamber to investigate the etching techniques, the relative efficiency, the measurable [a]-energy range, and the counting statistic for the measurement of radon concentration. THE KARLSRUHE DIFFUSION CHAMBER The design of the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber is presented in Fig. 1. The upper part of the chamber is closed by a fibreglass filter to separate radon from aerosols, heavy dust particles and radon decay products. Inside the diffusion chamber [a]-particles from radon and daughters are detected by two passive radon detectors, one on the bottom of the chamber and the other in front of the filter. With the fibreglass filter applied the diffusion time is about 1 minute for radon. Therefore, also short-term variations in the radon concentration are recorded by the track detector. Mainly because of the short halflife of thoron (56 s) only about 7 % of the thoron concentration is expected in the diffusion chamber. Radon monitoring provides the estimation of the long-term accumulated mean value of the radon concentration with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 pCi/1 after 3 months accumulation by using polycarbonate track etch detectors, an electrochemical etching technique and track counting in a single field of 1 cm2. The diffusion chamber was optimized for the polycarbonate track detector with respect to chamber geometry and detector position [1]. Table 1 presents data for 3 different diffusion chamber designs. The radon sensitivity of the diffusion chamber depends on the [a]-energy discrimination and the angular response of the [a]-track detector. The difference between foil No 2 and foil No 1 can be explained by an additional plate-out effect of radon daughters on foil No 3. The high sensitivity of foil No 3 compared to that of foil No 2 is caused by an increase of the effective volume and the effective area for [a]-particle from radon and from plated-out decay products, respectively. Additional experiments have been performed in order to investigate the electrostatic properties of the plastic material and the properties of the diffusion filter [1]. The properties of bare a-detectors were compared with those inside the diffusion chamber. In contrast to laboratory results, dust particles deposited on the detector surface or in the environment of the detector obviously affect the reproducibility of the bare detector significantly. After 4 months exposure in dwellings the scatter of 10 dosimeters exposed in the same room exceeds a factor of 3 compared to 15 % for the diffusion chamber. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TRACK ETCH DETECTORS Detector types and evaluation technique In the comparative study the properties of the following plastic track etch detectors have been applied: - LR 115 from Kodak Pathé, France, is a red dyed cellulose nitrate layer of 13 µm thickness on a 100 µm thick polyester support. The holes appears as bright spots in a dark red background. In an optical microscope counting of through etched [a]-tracks which must penetrate the detector layer - CR 39 from Pershore, England, is an ally1 diglycol carbonate plastic of about 300 m thickness. The normal etched [a]-tracks are counted by an optical microscope and the ECE [a]-tracks by a microfiche reader.

To accommodate growth in air service and to follow the Master Plan for long-term airport development, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority established thed2 Development Program at Washington Dulles International Airport. A sub-surface Automated People Mover (APM) System is under construction to replace the Mobile Lounges as the primary people mover system at Dulles. To minimize disruption to airport operations the majority of the APM System’s crossings of Taxi lanes will be undertaken using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This paper explores the planning and design of these shallow tunnel segments for future generation aircraft loads, within the constraints of minimal construction access under post 9/11 security requirements and the context of the overall airport expansion program.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. In this paper, we present a sensitivity study for the numerical modelling of hydromechanical coupling around a shaft in partially saturated claystone. Two representative constitutive models have been used: an elastoplastic damage model (IDEPLML) and an elastic perfect plastic model based on the Hoek and Brown failure criterion (H&B). A series of comparative studies have been performed with respect to main parameters involved in coupling process (mechanical, hydraulic and hydric properties). The emphasis is put on the evaluation of induced plastic, damaged and failed zone due to excavation and drying process. Die parametrische Analyse konzentriert sich auf den Modelltypus und auf die wesentlichen bei der Verbindung wirksamen Parameter, d.h. die mechanischen, hydraulischen und hydrologischen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Bewährung der plastifizierten Bereiche des Bauwerkes während der Austrocknung.

The D47 and D39 Mechanical Dynamic Extra bolts (D47 MDX and D39 MDX) have been developed in response to the ever-increasing demand from the mining industry for rock bolts with high dynamic capacity. To prove such capacity, Sandvik has performed numerous in situ dynamic testing with the unique Dynamic Test Rig (DTR) (Darlington, Rataj and Roach, 2019; Roach, Rataj and Darlington, 2019). To complement the collection of testing data, Sandvik, in collaboration with the Swedish Research Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) have performed additional experiments in laboratory condition using Swerim’s new drop test rig. This rig utilises a momentum transfer method to apply a dynamic load to the bolt. The sample falls together with the mass until the support beam impacts stationary dampers and the momentum energy is transferred to the bolt. Part of the charged energy is released by the dumpers while the remaining portion is absorbed by plastic deformation and/or displacement of the ground support element. The D47 and D39 MDX bolts have been tested at Swerim’s test facility with different levels of input energy. Six tests were performed at the specification energy of 36 kJ and six tests were carried out with the maximum allowable energy from the facility, ie 44 kJ. The bolts confirmed their dynamic performance absorbing the input energy without failure. The D47 MDX bolt absorbed up to 33 kJ with 150 mm displacement while the D39 MDX bolt absorbed up to 35 kJ with 162 mm displacement. This work will present an overview of the drop test rig at Swerim’s facility and a collection of results of the test performed on the D47 and D39 MDX bolts. The test method and results will be analysed and compared to the tests carried out with the in situ DTR.

1. “Daisy-Chain” concept The term “daisy-chain” stems from the fact that when the HotShot? detonators are connected there is a chain or electrical path for electrical current to flow from detonator A to detonator B, detonator B to detonator C etc until the path is terminated by an electrical means. The “daisy-chain” concept has long been used in electronic detonator systems, historically used in Expert Explosives’ ExEx 1000 5/6 wire system and currently in use in African Explosives Limited (AEL’s) Electrodet? electronic detonator system and has been adopted as the basis upon which the “auto-programmability” of the HotShot? electronic detonator system functions. HotShot? Detonators are connected to each other in a string, completing a “daisy chain”, and during the auto-detection mode of the control equipment, it is possible for the equipment to determine the order of hookup of the detonators as well as map the entire blast layout. The auxiliary components (Row Controllers & Branch Controllers) assist the control equipment in mapping the entire blast by indicating different points on the blast, i.e. The inflection point of a row of blast holes on a closed chevron timing pattern, the beginning of row of blast holes on open chevron timing pattern and extra blast holes or extra blast rows.

The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. For mining companies facing strong international competition and unfavourable commodities’ prices, automation of underground operations has the potential to increase productivity and help cut costs. However, despite considerable technological progress in this field, there still remain many problems to overcome. Furthermore, successful implementation of automation depends also on numerous operational, organizational, and even human factors. In this context, this paper briefly reviews technological progress with regard to different underground operations. Following that, several issues related to implementation of automated equipment and systems are presented and discussed. Particular emphasis is put on the factors whose importance is often underestimated. Some recommendations in this respect are also given. It is stated that the success of an automation project is a function of many “winning conditions,” which may be created through very thorough planning and preparation. It is also underlined that despite achievements made, a vision of a man-less underground mine is not yet as much a matter of near future as it may seem.

Mineral resources of the Rice Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA), in the Mojave Desert of southeastern California, were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey during 1980. The study consisted of an examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas by the Bureau: of Mines and geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations by the Geological Survey. Little indicated potential for the presence of mineral resources exists in the valley floor segment of the study area. The Big Maria Mountains section of the study area has some potential for mineral resource development. Decorative building stone from both bedded quartzite deposits and weathered limestone surface rubble (driftwood stone) has been produced from the Big Maria Mountains segment of the study area. Total production is unrecorded but probably small. A 700,000 ton (640,000 t) quartzite resource was inferred and 4,500 tons (4,100 t) of driftwood stone within the study area was estimated. A relatively pure limestone deposit inside the study area contains an inferred resource of 14 million tons (13 million t). One prospect suggests a potential for the presence of manganese resources although none were estimated. The likelihood of discovering oil, gas, coal, uranium or geothermal energy is low; potential sources are not known to exist.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.
