The Bureau of Mines is conducting a series of investigations with the common aim of minimizing the losses that occur in the mining and treatment of mineral substances. The results of the investi- gations are being published in reports of the bureau. This report treats of a method of preventing some of the waste of the natural gas incidental to oil mining. This method, the condensation of gasoline from natural gas, offers to the oil operator and others a profitable means of utilizing some of the oil-well gas now being wasted. The most desired constituent of crude oil is obtained, the production of oil is not hindered, and the gas, after the extraction of gasoline, can be returned to the leased area to drive pumps or into pipe lines for uses to which natural gas is ordinarily put, usually with its fuel value lessened only in slight degree. Publications already issued briefly discuss the subject. In this report the work is treated in greater detail, and the results of many additional tests are shown.

This report is the first substantial description of the carbonizing process and the details of experimental work conducted at the Denver laboratories under a coopeative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Texas Power & Light Co. It presents the results of tests on several Texas lignites and other typical western coals that have been processed in the first pilot plant operated at Denver. Investigations on drying fine coal in the entrained and fluidized state have been under way at Bureau of Mines Denver laboratories for several years. Reports on this work were published in 1949 and 19505/ describing the theory and practice of re-moving inherent moisture from the lower -rank coals. The investigation did not include a study of the removal of surface moisture from fine fuel. Private industry in Canada became interested in the possibilities of drying fine coal, employing the closed-circuit system and techniques recommended by the Bureau. Large, commercial-scale drying units were built by a Canadian company, which successfully demonstrated that surface moisture could be removed from fine coal at high efficiency and capacity ill drying units similar in design to those developed by the Bureau.

After several years of laboratory and field evaluations, it has been established that each frother has its own unique relationship among bubble size reduction, gas hold-up increase, froth stabilization and frother concentration. It has been shown that a frother?s hydrodynamic properties can be characterized using the relationship between the froth zone property froth height and the pulp zone property gas hold-up. The relationship is established in a bubble column run at a given air rate over a range of frother concentration. The use of relationships in frother selection and plant diagnostics is illustrated in a series of plant case studies.

Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide (60%) ores of the western Cordillera compose a distinct class of deposits although they vary widely in detail and perhaps genesis. They have been important sources of lead, zinc, copper, silver, gold, and more rarely, molybdenum, tin, and tungsten in complex mineral assemblages usually dominated by pyrite. They occur as concordant stratiform bodies, as discordant mantos, and as chimneys crossing tens of meters of section; many are associated with faults and breccia bodies. Environments of formation of carbonate hosts range from craton basin to shelf with ages from Proterozoic to Cretaceous; in many instances, dating has shown mineralization to be significantly younger than hosts. Temperatures of formation determined for many deposits are high (200°-400°) and many districts are centers of igneous activity manifested by dikes, sills, and stocks. However, direct cause and effect relationships have been difficult to establish. Many important problems attend the renewed interest and study of these deposits and include questions of metal-sulfur sources, metallization processes and histories, geological controls at all scales, and relationships to broader patterns of metallogeny.

Paul Y. – SELI Joint Venture had been contracted to build the longest section of the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) – Stage I. This involved two tunnels under urban and marine areas excavated by high performance hard rock open type TBMs operated from deep shafts. A specific ground treatment program was developed using advance probing and grouting to control water inflow into the excavations. The article describes: the technologies adopted, the experienced problems, the encountered productions and their interrelation with the water inflow amounts, the possible improvement in the technologies for the excavation of the future stages of the same project as well of any other project under similar conditions.

"Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. Chronic whole-body vibration exposure, as expected in large construction and mining vehicles, has been associated with neck and back pain and injury.1 While work has been done towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship between vibration and shock and muscle activity of the back musculature2, relatively little information regarding the activity of neck, shoulder and upper arm muscles is known. Today’s equipment designs must conform to domestic and international standards, however these standards do not specifically address the vibration exposure in the head and upper quarter. Further it is not well known how the control configuration within a vehicle (e.g. steering wheel versus arm controls) influences muscle voluntary and reflex activity levels. Greater muscle activity may lead to greater muscle fatigue – which in turn may be associated with greater risk of injury.2 Thus, muscle contractions needed to maintain static postures as well as those resulting reflexively should be considered during an analysis of seating position. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck muscle function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative muscle activities of 5 neck, shoulder, and upper arm muscles during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree of freedom (dof) vibration system. Each ride was repeated using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted arm-rest controls (FM), seat mounted arm-rest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). Five channels of surface electromyography (EMG) of the right-side cervical erector spinae muscles (neck extensors), sternocleidomastoid (neck flexor), upper trapezius (shoulder elevator), biceps brachii (elbow flexor) and triceps brachii (elbow extensor) muscles were collected throughout each ride (~ 2min) using pre-amplified (10x), 1 cm silver bar electrodes, with 1 cm fixed inter-electrode distances (Delsys, Inc). Further analog amplification was set at 10k (1k for one subject), and sampled at 1000Hz using a 12-bit DAQ card and Labview 7.1 software (National Instruments). A total of 7 right-handed male subjects were tested, but only 5 had complete EMG data sets to analyze for this sub-study. EMG was analyzed using root mean square (RMS, in mV) of 20 ms moving windows, and then averaged across the entire trial for a measure of mean total muscle activity (voluntary and reflexive). The muscle activity to maintain the static posture was estimated as the mean RMS EMG over a 1 sec interval just prior to and/or after completion of the ride. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to test for with-in subject differences using a = 0.05.

Recent three-dimensional surveying techniques have opened up new opportunities for the registration and monitoring of underground cavities. There are essentially two main methods available: Laser scanning, which is used both above surface and increasingly underground, and photogrammetry, which is also experiencing a renaissance with techniques like structure from motion through the algorithm-based orientation of high-resolution images. Both methods provide the capability to reconstruct reality by various 3-D products like points clouds and meshed models. However, they differ significantly in the steps of registration and calculation as well as in the resulting evaluation options.

The International Conference on Sustainable Development Indicators in the Mineral Industries(SDIMI 2003) was held May 21-23, 2003 on the island of Milos, Greece. The objective of this international conference was to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development. The main theme of the conference was the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. Emerging technologies were also presented that can assist in the development of criteria and performance indicators.

In typical conventional narrow vein stoping operations, the use of temporary support components to offer some support to workers, whilst the permanent and generally more elaborate support system gets installed or constructed, still results in injuries to people. The authors wishes to explore the probability and practicality of making use of new generation support products to make the support operations safer as well as enhance productivity in the stope face. This paper will examine the use of Autorock Drills as a means to drill roof support holes and install appropriate support components into these holes, as well as the application of ?Thin Spray Liners?, commonly called TSL?s as an additional means of creating a safer operating environment. The installation of netting as a means of roof protection and other support aspects such as cemented roof-bolts will also be explored. These proposed items are envisaged to improve the safety of our people and reduce production down time and increase production and productivity.

Throughout the world, there are many orebodies or materials which have significant value but also contain arsenic, antimony, and mercury. As regulations on the transport, exposure, disposition and emission of these elements have become more stringent; it has become increasingly more difficult to derive the values from the resources. This paper outlines the fundamentals of alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy and its successful application to arsenic, antimony and mercury bearing ores, concentrates, by-products, and other materials.

The stability of floors of large drydocks and wagon tipper sheds at coal terminals is an important matter but quite difficult to solve. Anchors can be used to join floors to foundations thus ensuring the stability of floors by the self-weight of floors and the pull of anchors. In this paper, the author describes the structures and types of the anchors used in the floors of the drydock in Beihai Shipyard and the wagon tipper shed at Shijiu Port, both in Shandong Province China, the determination of bearing capacity of anchors in rock bed of highly weathered granite, the comparison between prestressed anchors and non-prestressed anchors, the construction technology of anchors and the analysis of field experimental data.

"INTRODUCTIONPoint Mines is located about 65 miles east of Hay River on the South Shore of the Great Slave Lake. It is connected to the Northern Alberta Railway System by the Great Slave Lake Division of CN Railways at Roma Junction, Alberta.The operation started in the fall of 1965 with a capacity of 5000 t.p.d. An addition was put into operation late in 1968 to bring the capacity up to 8000 t.p.d. The present milling rate is 11,000 t.p.d.The location of Pine Point Mines is such that long end cold winters are to be expected end temperatures of lower than -200F are encountered from late October to late March, with extended periods of -300F being common in January and February.It was recognized by Cominco engineers during the initial design period that since freezing would be encountered with open pit ore somewhere in the crushing circuit, the problem was to reduce it as much as possible. Other mines, working under similar conditions, found that the fine ore bins feeding the grinding circuit were the main problem area. The decision was reached, therefore, to have heated fine ore bins and to make sure thst the ore was sufficiently warm to prevent freezing.CRUSHING PLANT FLOWSHEETThe crushing plant has a standard open flow circuit (flowsheet). Ore from the stockpile is loaded into R-50 Euclid trucks by Caterpillar 992 Front End Loader with 11 cu. yd. bucket and dumped into a 42 x 65 C.A.C. Superior Crusher driven by a 300 HP motor. The crusher is set at a nominal 5 inches. The ore falls through into a 100-ton surge bin. There are high level and low level nuclear gauges to allow the primary operator to optimize for optimum orientation."

In assessing the application of cast-in-place piles, it is of value to reflect on the development of the various systems, in order to understand how the current processes and equipment came to be. This paper traces the evolution of the cast-in-place industry. Emphasis is on developments in the United States; however, since there has been a substantial fusion of US and European processes, notable European developments are also discussed.

The effect of the degree of nickel oxide reduction and the reaction gas composition on the furnace productivity has been estimated by computations and the established relationship is in good agreement with the practical data obtained in the process of electric smelting at the Severonickel smelter. An increase in the reduction degree within a range of =0.65 - 0.9 results in an increase in the furnace productivity by 19% to 37% and in a decrease in the unit electric power requirement by 16% to 27% depending on the reaction gas composition. The agreement between the computed and practical data has confirmed that the decisive factor for the process of treatment of reduced nickel oxide in an electric-arc furnace under the given conditions is the specific heat absorption, which is dependent on the nickel oxide reduction degree and the reaction gas composition.

A project to demonstrate the feasibility of retorting oil shale by the Paraho vertical retort process was carried out at Anvil Points, Colorado during 1974 to 1976. As a part of the demonstration project, laboratory and field tests were performed to determine the physical and chemical properties of the retorted shale for use in the development of eventual full-scale disposal plans. The material which exits from the Paraho retort is classified as a non-plastic silty gravel by the Unified Soil Classification System. The particles have an apparent specific gravity averaging near 2.60 and a mass specific gravity averaging near 2.00. The material can be compacted by normal laboratory and field construction methods to about 90 to 100 pounds per cubic foot dry density depending upon the degree of compactive effort applied. The addition of moisture does not improve compactibility appreciably. When high compactive effort is applied the retorted shale is classed as impervious to water flow. The compacted retorted shale exhibits shear strengths in the same order as those observed for silty gravel soils. If the compacted material is cured (long tune simulation testing) prior to strength testing considerable strength gain can be obtained from cementing action. The amount of cementing developed is dependent upon heat treatment and other operating modes of the retort.

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

"As a part of the ‘US Army Corps of Engineers - New Orleans to Venice, Louisiana Hurricane Protection Project’, deep mixing ground improvement was designed to reinforce the soft ground for the emergency repair of a 7297-foot (2,224 m) long section of the Mississippi River West Bank levee in Buras Levee District under the contract ‘Emergency Levee Repairs – Contract P-17A, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana’. The ground improvement utilizes a series of soil-cement panels oriented in the transverse direction of the levee. Each soil-cement panel consists of overlapped columns installed by the deep mixing method (DMM). DMM is performed from the existing top of levee and extended to competent stratum at depths varying from 26 feet (7.9 m) to 47 feet (14.3 m) below the working platform. The main purpose of the DMM panels is to provide shear resistance to the levee against lateral loads at high flood water condition. The DMM panels support the additional vertical load created by the increased height of the levee for hurricane protection and control the long-term settlement of the remediated levee, which might otherwise occur due to the compression of soft foundation soils. The total amount of DMM treatment is approximately 54,000 cubic yards (41,500 cubic meters). This paper reviews the project background, subsurface soil conditions and presents the design, construction and quality control of the deep mixing work for this levee repair project.INTRODUCTIONIn August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused major damage to the federal and non-federal flood control projects in southeast Louisiana. In September 2005, Hurricane Rita caused further damage to this flood protection system. In an effort to minimize further damage and to enhance the protection level, certain non-federal levees located on the west bank of the Mississippi river in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana were incorporated into the New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection project by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). DMM techniques were then utilized by the USACE in several of these emergency projects and in many medium sized projects between 2006 and 2010 (Bruce et al. 2012). This project (called P-17A hereafter) which forms a part of this protection system is executed under the contract Emergency Levee Repairs, Contract P-17A. This is one of the largest projects of the USACE after LPV- 111. The huge LPV-111 project (5.5 miles (8.9 km) of levee) treated by DMM), the largest DMM project ever conducted outside Japan, began in 2010 and was completed in 2012 (Cali et al. 2012, Bruce et al. 2012).DMM is utilized at P-17A to construct a series of soil-cement panels oriented in the transverse direction of the existing levee to provide shear resistance to the levee against the lateral load during high flood water condition. The project extends 7297-foot (2,224 m) along the West Bank Levee of the Mississippi River in the Buras district of Louisiana, parallel to Louisiana Highway 23 (LA-23) as shown in Figure 1. It is located approximately 60 miles (96 km) south-east of downtown New Orleans."

More than 95 percent of all the barite mined and produced is used in the petroleum industry as “drillers mud.” The remaining barite is used in the industrial and medical markets. Therefore, the amount of drilling activity is a good indicator of the health and growth of the barite industry. The four major barite-producing countries in the world are China, the United States, India and Morocco. In 2005, the average number of drilling rigs exploring for oil and gas increased by about 15 percent over the average number in 2004. This increase in oil and gas exploration has resulted in a higher demand for barite and an increase in barite production.
