One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Related areas are defined as those concerned with: (i) mine ventilation system design and operation; (ii) description, measurement, modeling and monitoring of mine atmosphere contaminants, and (iii) tests, standards, selection procedures, and operational practices for internal combustion engines in underground mines. References cited from source materials span the years 1900 to early 1977. Total number of references cited is 511. Subjective criteria governed the definition and selection of references. Therefore, this bibliography is not claimed to be all-inclusive nor does it purport to be an exhaustive search of all sources.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. Electrochemical processes occur on nano-, micro- and macro- scale in numerous applications such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen production, mineral extraction, water treatment, electrotherapy, sensors and many others. In most of these applications, gases evolve either at one or both electrodes due to electrolysis. These gases form bubbles play a crucial role in electrochemical systems. For example, in electrowinning (EW) that is used to extract and refine metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd from their solutions, in most cases the solution is acidic and oxidation of water molecules at the anode is the common counter reaction, which results in the liberation of oxygen bubbles. This generally requires a high overpotential and accounts for a considerable percentage of the energy consumed in metal EW electrolytic cells, apart from producing acid mist that is very corrosive for other cell equipment and building structures. The behaviour of bubbles in electrochemical systems is still a complex challenging topic which requires a better understanding of gas bubbles hydrodynamics and their interactions with electrode surface and bulk liquid, as well as between the bubbles themselves. The objective of the current paper is to briefly review the fundamental hydrodynamics of both gas bubbles on the electrode surface and gas bubbles interaction with the liquid bulk solution. The current work also investigates the impact of gas bubbling and some operating parameters in copper EW, such as current density (100-500 A/m2), temperature (25-75ºC), acidity (50-300 g/L) and a typical chemical mist suppressant (<50 ppm). The results clearly show that both suppressant and temperature reduced the overall surface tension of the solution. Also, chloride concentration and applied current improved electrolyte flow and copper quality at higher current densities. The current paper contributes to the development of mineral processing (specifically to copper hydrometallurgy), as it deals with fundamental hydrodynamics and interactions of gas bubbles that formed during copper EW and play a crucial role in copper electrochemical systems.

Keywords: Undercooling, Convection, Dendrites, Stainless Steel, Levitation Certain Fe-Cr-Ni stainless steel alloys solidify from an undercooled melt by a two-step process in which the metastable ferrite phase forms first followed by the stable austenite phase. Recent experiments have shown that the lifetime of the metastable phase is strongly influenced by flow within the molten sample. The current research will provide insight to why flow affects the metastable phase. This new understanding will lead to the use of convection to control microstructural evolution in spray-forming of stainless steels. Simulations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics package, FIDAP, yield a range of convective flow velocities that cause mechanical damage to the dendrites which is compared to experimental results. If the convective velocities are great enough that the dendrites bend, then low angle boundaries form at the points of collision. These result in high energy sites that could serve as nuclei for the stable phase.

The METSI project is a starting point for technology and know-how transfer of German water management and water treatment technologies to South African Mining industry. "METSI" is Setswana, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, and means "water". It stands also for "Management System for the Implementation of Environmentally Sound Water Supply Technologies in South African Mining Areas with Involvement of all Relevant Stakeholders". The project focuses on development, design and implementation of mathematical models that consolidate and evaluate existing data and generate substantiated projections of "water" amount and quality. METSI covers a wide range of scientific, technical, social as well as economic questions related to "water in mining"."

Barrick Goldstrike mine utilizes a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit to simultaneously leach gold into solution with cyanide and adsorb the gold-cyanide complex onto activated carbon for further refinement. If the gold bearing ore contains a significant amount of native carbonaceous material, gold cyanide can be adsorbed at these sites instead of onto the desired activated carbon and the gold is effectively lost to tailings in a detrimental process known as "preg-robbing." The preg-rob effect is considerably reduced by treating the ore with a surfactant, which is hypothesized to adsorb to and passivate the native carbon surfaces. Past laboratory and pilot studies have consistently demonstrated significant gains in gold recovery after treating carbonaceous ore with surfactant. With success in bench and pilot scale testing, a plant trial was conducted at Barrick Goldstrike to evaluate the feasibility of using an alkoxylated fatty amine surfactant (Ethomeen T/12) to aid in the leaching of high preg-robbing ores. This paper analyzes the performance of the surfactant during the plant trial in addition to the problems that occurred during the trial period. Suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

Extraction of minerals can be achieved by a variety of technologies; one of them is ion exchange. There are several ion exchange configurations and mechanical set-ups available, but only one technology will provide more process performance and flexibility compared to the other. The multiple column Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange (CCIX) technology provides the highest form of process flexibility with also the highest mineral recovery feasible through ion exchange. In comparison with a fixed bed system, the PuriTech CCIX system offers the benefits of continuous counter-current contact mode. This way the resin capacity is fully exploited leading to reduction in resin inventory and, at the same time, in chemicals and water consumption, and product dilution. For any set of operating conditions the mass transfer zone has a characteristic length (MTZL). The MTZL can be expressed in duration, column length, or volume, but is the measure of the quantity of resin in the system that is doing "work" at any given moment in the process. The objective of continuous ion exchange processing is to eliminate all resin volume from the process equipment that is not within a mass transfer zone. In most commercial ion exchange processes for the recovery of metals, CCIX engineering can eliminate as much as 20 - 80 % of the ion exchange resin inventory. Consumptions of water and chemicals are typically brought down around 40% or more. For each type of resin the selectivity/affinity towards a particular metal depends on the basic process conditions such as pH, concentrations of other competing metals in solution. By changing the pH in the ion exchange process phase, the selectivity of the resin can be changed. By doing this, a split elution, or extraction of metals separately can be achieved and the effect of other competing metals (cross-contamination) can be reduced. For example the DOW resin XUS43578 is commonly used for the recovery of copper or nickel/cobalt separation.

"Stirred mill technology dates back to 1928 where the idea to use “an agitator and spherical grinding media” was presented. In the context of the mining industry, interest in stirred milling technologies has grown over the last 20 years where the typical observation reported inDespite these developments, the tumbling mills are continuing to be used in fine and ultrafine grinding applications. The main reason for this, as communicated at the Canadian Mineral Processors roundtable discussion in 2013, is that the comfort level in understanding stirred milling technologies is not at the level of that of tumbling mills.At CMP 2014, one contribution was made to explore how mill design affects power and energy in a stirred mill. While the 2015 CMP paper explored the application of one scale-up methodology to the Gibraltar case. For the CMP 2016, the aim of this paper is to contribute to increasing the general comfort level with stirred milling technologies by developing a better understanding of the different scale-up methodologies used. This will be accomplished by first completing an overview of the scale-up models found in the literature followed by a review of the different testing and scale-up procedures. This review will be supported by a number of case studies found in the literature. Ground conditions in central Glasgow generally comprise loose granular deposits overlying stiffer soils. CFA piling would normally be preferred for urban sites in these ground conditions, but flighting of the superficial deposits has on occasions resulted in building damage. Over the last five years rotary bored piling with vinyl polymer support fluid has proved to be an economic alternative to bentonite slurry. Two case histories in central Glasgow are described in this paper, one for piles founding in granular soils and one for piles founding into bedrock. A comparison is made between the methods required for disposal of the liquid waste from bentonite and vinyl polymer slurries.

The need for onsite gas monitoring during, or following, a major incident at an underground coal mine has long been recognised. Recommendations from inquiries following Queensland mine disasters have included ?qualified persons and equipment for rapid analysis of gas samples be available in times of emergency? and that ?this may be accomplished by either mobile laboratories or laboratories established in each mining locality.? Following the Moura No. 2 disaster, the Queensland Government allocated funds to Simtars for a mobile laboratory to respond should such a disaster occur again in the future. This vehicle was commissioned in 1997 and has been used at many mine sites under a wide range of scenarios. Simtars, armed with over ten years of operational experience with this mobile laboratory, has taken an active role in the design and construction of a modernised replacement unit. With a twenty point tube bundle system and ultrafast gas chromatograph the result is, arguably, the best equipped mobile gas analysis laboratory for mine emergency response in the world. This paper outlines the features of the new laboratory, its capabilities and the philosophy behind the design and inclusions.

This section deals with one of the most fascinating aspects of mining the evaluation of mine investment opportunities. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. Tellurium is a high-tech and also toxic element. This element shows sufficient contents in Fe-Mn crusts and nodules in the modern ocean to be involved in future industrial processes [Hein et al., 2003]. Tellurium minerals and contents are not well recorded in modern and ancient black smoker systems. Tellurides are rarely found in sulfides from the modern oceans [Iizasa et al. 1992; Maslennikov et al., 2010]. The previous common opinion that tellurium is scarce in active seafloor hydrothermal systems can be revised due to the recent discovery of abundant tellurides in chimneys from Brothers Volcano vent site [Berkenbosch et al., 2012]. We found abundant tellurobismuthite, hessite, and native tellurium in chimneys from Su Su Knoll vents sites (West Pacific). So, tellurides can be found in some chimneys but absent in others. The causes of this are poorly understood. These conflicting data create numerous questions and require an explanation. The problem can be resolved by research at different scales including analysis of relevant genetic features of host sequences, systematic textural and paragenetic studies of different types of chimneys, and their rare mineral assemblages. Paragenetic models, compositional analyses and ranges of tellurium-bearing minerals and the physicochemical interpretation of chimney diversity in different types of VMS deposits are the main subjects of our research. The data on tellurides in chimneys from ancient VMS deposits should also be useful to resolve this problem.

The removal of a cylindrical core from thick-wall sections for creep analysis by the relatively new Weldcore® process represents a very exciting methodology for obtaining more representative creep damage data from large engineering structures. The cylindrical core that is removed, representing about 60% of the wall thickness, leaves a substantial removal site that needs to be repaired. This paper presents data pertaining to taper Friction Hydro Pillar Processing as an alternative repair technique for filling the core removal site. Process parameters were evaluated with special attention being paid to the effect of downward force on process response variables, weld defects, and mechanical properties of 10CrMo910 steel. Process temperature and torque response as well as total process energy input were also considered. This paper also assesses the static and dynamic performance of this repair technique. The influence of a varying downward force and the occurrence and position of discontinuities were quantified. Downward force was shown to have the most notable effect on weld joint dynamic performance and was found to be related to the process temperatures achieved in close proximity to the weld interface.

The constant decline in the price of this metal has now reached the stage where it is of much concern and the cause of serious discussion among the leading financiers, economists, and statesmen of the world. Further- more, it is significant that this subject is so important that almost every day one can read articles pertaining to it in the newspapers and trade publications. Being essentially a banker, and not an economist, I do not claim to be an authority on the silver question. The Duparquet mining camp situated along the Quebec segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault was the site of gold exploitation from 1933 to 1956 and 1988 to 1991. Numerous gold showings and deposits straddle the fault. An ongoing regional metallogenic study by the Quebec Geological Survey has identified five main types of gold mineralization, each showing a distinct style, alteration, control, metal content, and timing. In order to maximise the impact of this study, a 3D regional common-earth-model was constructed along a critical segment of the Porcupine-Destor Fault with the gOcad® technology. The realisation of this model required the maximum use of the public SIGEOM numerical database, as well as the recovery of significant private data from exploration company partners. The 3D model is also a powerful new dynamic exploration tool, which can be queried using geological criteria characteristic of the different gold deposit types. This 3D model can be modified and improved continuously by adding data from new drilling, mapping or geophysical surveys. The case of the Porcupine-Destor Fault illustrates the importance of 3D common-earth-modelling in delivering refined technological geological syntheses likely to attract significant investments from the mining exploration industry, especially for deep exploration programs within mature mining camps.

The State of New South Wales is highly favoured in having vast deposits of coal adjacent to and within easy reach of the coastal Ports. Not only is the quality of the fuel generally superior to any found in the other States, but it is greater in extent than in any other part of the Continent. For interesting and reliable details of the history of the discovery of coal, the geology of the coal bearing strata, analysis of the various coals and other valuable data, the readers are referred to the book recently issued by the New South Wales Government, entitled The Mineral Resources of New South Wales, by Edward F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., etc., by the direction of the Hon. T. L. Fegan, Minister for Mines. The mining community is indebted to the Minister for having had published the most valuable condensed record of the mineral resources of the State extant.For the purposes of this paper we will only give such a general description of the coal fields as will make it intelligible in connection with the subject of the coal mining in the State of New South Wales.

Since early 1970?s skirt suction foundations (skirted foundation / bucket foundation) have been used as support for large fixed substructures or anchors for floating structures in offshore hydrocarbon development projects. In recent years skirt suction foundations are recognized as one of the solutions in foundations applicable to bridge substructures installed in waters, because skirt foundations have a wide variety of functions such as control of settlement during service life, less impact to environments during operation at installation site. This paper introduces general features of skirt suction foundations, and then discusses design practice of them for the application to bridge substructures, with reference to experiments in both laboratory and field.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.
