This case study describes the geotechnical aspects of the basement construction for a multi-storey, residential and hotel complex located in the newly developed Elizabeth Quay precinct in Perth, Western Australia. The development included a three-level basement for car parking covering the full site area which was constructed using the top-down construction sequence. Soil conditions generally comprised 2m of fill overlying medium to dense clayey sands that in turn were generally overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 13m depth. Bedrock level was generally encountered at approximately 22m to 35m below ground level. The ground water table was at a depth of approximately 1m below the existing ground surface level. A site boundary basement wall was constructed using a diaphragm wall retention system. The majority of the vertical loads from the building were transferred to the Kings Park Formation (KPF) bedrock through the use of foundation piles constructed by the CFA method. The CFA piles were installed from existing ground level, resulting in approximately 9m sacrificial concrete length from pile platform level to basement 3 (B3) level. The permanent column loads are such that a single CFA pile was not structurally adequate. To allow a full CFA foundation system to be adopted, an innovative design and construction approach was developed for these heavily loaded columns. Many organizations, including the Bureau of Mines, have made intensive studies of the application of leaching methods to relatively small low-grade disseminated deposits of copper ores, containing both oxide and sulphide minerals. One of the principal difficulties has been to obtain a solvent that could be made at a low cost and would effectively dissolve the copper minerals. Another drawback has been the high initial cost of a plant and the refined type of mechanism ordinarily required by standard practice for carrying out the leaching cycle. The Bureau of Mines has attempted to develop a cheap and efficient solvent that would especially meet the requirements of smaller plants. (See Bibliography.) It has been known that dilute ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid solution is an excellent solvent for most copper minerals, such as chalcocite, bornite, and oxidized forms, but not for chalcopyrite and certain silicates. A method of producing this solution from sulphurous products and waste liquors was developed by the bureau and tried successfully on a test-plant scale at the Southwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz. However, this work did not involve the actual leaching of ores with the solutions thus produced or the cyclic use of the iron solutions in the regenerator cell. Except for certain laboratory tests, in which known impurities were added, no data were available to show the effect on regeneration if accumulations of impurities were built up in the leaching circuit.

Indonesia is poised to become a major player in the Pacific Rim thermal coal markets. Although the colonial Dutch developed numerous coal mines in the late 1800's for steamship bunkers and domestic fuel, Indonesia's coal industry has only recently begun to actively participate in the growing global marketplace. This export coal is primarily the result of the commercial development of coal mines in eastern Kalimantan by foreign contractors. From virtually no coal exports in the late 1980?s, Indonesia's coal industry has increased its exports to approximately 15 million metric tons (Mmt) in 1992. In 1992, Indonesia was the world?s sixth largest exporter of steam coal, By the year 2000, Indonesia projects that it will supply approximately 25 percent of the seaborne thermal coal requirements of the Pacific Rim countries. Although limited quantities of this coal may enter the European and U.S. markets, high qualities, low production casts, and favorable transportation rates will make Indonesian coals very competitive in the rapidly growing Pacific Rim markets. This study examines the Indonesian coal mining industry and compares it to the U.S. coal mining industry. This report is the sixth in a series of coal exporting country studies requested by the House Appropriations Committee. Previous studies examined the Colombian, Canadian, Australian, South African, Polish, and Venezuelan coal industries.

INTRODUCTION Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) south of Dallas, Texas, use to be the site of the Superconducting Super Collider. For those of you unfamiliar with the project, this was a multi-billion dollar project taken on by the U.S. Government for the further advancement of technology, medicine, and science. Major components of the project consisted of a Linear Accelerator known as the LINAC; three accelerating rings known as the Low Energy Boosters (LEB), Medium Energy Booster (MEB) and the High Energy Booster (HEB); the East and West Campuses where the Inner Reactor Halls would have been located; and the 87 km (54 mile) main collider tunnel. Unfortunately, this all came to an end on December 6, 1993, with the termination of the project due to the Government's cancellation of funds. This paper will deal with the two of the underground contracts before the termination. These two contracts were the 1122 contract which ran from N25 to N40 and the 1130 contract which ran from N40 to N55. (See figure 1) The 1122 contract was awarded to us in July of 1992 and consisted of the excavation and support of six (6) shaft varying in diameter from 5.5 m (18 feet) to 8 m (26 feet) and ranging from 39.6 m (130 feet) to 61 m (200 feet) deep and the driving of approximately 13,100 m (.43,000 If.) of main collider tunnel. The high degree of mechanisation, which is mainly diesel-powered, has a significant effect on heat loads; heat output from this source often exceeds the heat flow from the surrounding rock. The extensive use of diesel-powered equipment also influences ventilation rates and minimum values are necessary to ensure that emissions of diesel exhaust are adequately diluted. Many Australian mines are in subtropical or tropical areas with high ambient wet- and dry-bulb temperatures on surface. This, coupled with the large amount of heat from mechanisation, usually means that refrigeration is required at much shallower depths. A secondary problem is associated with the definition of acceptable thermal environment conditions, which are sometimes based on the assumption of no air movement. Blasters are usually strictly liable for injury or damage caused by flyrock (trespassory invasion) and blast-induced vibrations (non-trespassory invasion). The application of strict liability to non-trespassory invasions has resulted in significant litigation that has hampered the use of blasting and the blasting industry. Stark (2002) proposes that blasters should not be held strictly liable for non-trespassory invasions but should be liable only if their conduct is proven to be negligent. This change in legal standard was proposed because improvements in blasting technology over the last thirty years allow blasting to be conducted without substantial risk of harm to property and thus the amount of harm imposed by a blast can be related to the level of care exercised by the blaster. It is anticipated that a negligence standard will reduce the amount of litigation because a plaintiff will have a greater burden to overcome. To facilitate the acceptance of a negligence standard by a court of law, this paper summarizes the standard of care using the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, extensive U.S. Bureau of Mines research, and current blasting techniques, such as blasting mats. It is important for the blasting industry to promulgate a standard of care so a judge can feel confident that blasting can be routinely and systematically controlled and if the legal standard is changed from strict liability to negligence a subsequent judge or jury will be able to evaluate the level of care exercised by the blaster. This paper also suggests that the industry and/or ISEE develop and disseminate a comprehensive standard of care that courts can use to further justify a change from strict liability to negligence and evaluate the standard of care.

"1. INTRODUCTION Grade separation of roads and railway tracks is an effective method for solving traffic-related issues in cities. However, in urban areas where the existing traffic infrastructure is already overcrowded, construction of new roads often faces problems especially in the proximity of existing structures. This paper summarizes the construction plan and results of new road tunnel construction in the proximity of the piers of elevated tracks on the Tokaido Shinkansen railway.2. SUMMARY OF CONSTRUCTION AND ISSUES Auxiliary Route No. 26 as specified in the Tokyo urban plan is a project by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, covering the construction of a new road with a total length of 22.3 km currently on the way to completion. In Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, Auxiliary Route No. 26 is designed to cross the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, so for this project, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) was commissioned to design and build a road crossing under the railway tracks (Sumiyoshi Underpass). Figures 1 through 3 show a sketch of the Sumiyoshi Underpass. The Sumiyoshi Underpass was planned as a two-lane tunnel for vehicles, which was to cross under the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line at an angle of 70 degrees. The structure concerned is a single-story single-span box culvert structure with the following dimensions: 11.5 m wide, 7.7 m high and 31.6 m long. The Tokaido Shinkansen Line tracks were constructed on a girder-type elevated bridge built in the 1960s, and the foundation piles of the piers (P7 and P8) in the proximity of this crossing box culvert of RC structure were constructed using an earth drill method. The crossing structure for this project is located extremely close to the piers of the Tokaido Shinkansen railway tracks, with a minimal separation of 0.4 m, and the most significant issue of this project was construction in a manner that would not obstruct the normal operations of the Tokaido Shinkansen (Figure 4). Initially, we considered installing a temporary earth retaining structure in the proximity of the piers, cutting the ground and building an RC box, but concluded that it would be very difficult to apply this method because of probable excessive displacements in the Shinkansen railway piers. That is why we decided on the use of a non-open cut method in order to minimize the impact on the piers."

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

After that he lectured in the Departments of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of the Witwatersrand and Natal. From 1968 to 1973, he was Leader of the Chemical Engineering Research Group of the National Institute for Metallurgy at the latter University. Mr C.E. Fivaz, Pr. Eng., is Chief Consulting Metallurgist of Rand Mines (Mining & Services) Limited, and is responsible for the metallurgical activities of the Gold and Uranium Division and the Coal and Base Minerals Division of the Group.

"One of the major environmental impacts of mining is the destruction of habitat. The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an iconic Australian marsupial that has been severely affected by land clearing and its decline is continuing. This has placed pressure upon mining companies and government agencies to ensure koalas are managed throughout the life-of-mines - from land clearing through to rehabilitation of post-mining landscapes. This paper reports on the æKoala VentureÆ research partnership between The University of Queensland and Rio Tinto. As part of the Koala Venture program we examined koala use of two types of restored environments: rehabilitated mined land (20 sites) natural regrowth forests (six sites), at Blair Athol Coal Mine in Central Queensland, Australia. Searches for koala scats revealed evidence of koalas in ten per cent of rehabilitated sites (2/20) and 33 per cent of natural regrowth sites (2/6). Two factors were identified as being of greatest importance in facilitating koala recolonisation of restored habitats. Firstly, all recolonised sites were located close to native forest occupied by koalas (mean 135 m ¦ 52). Proximity to source animals is considered crucial to recolonisation of suitably restored habitats. Secondly, three of the four recolonised sites were dominated by koala food trees, most of which were large enough to be utilised by koalas. Availability of suitably abundant food resources is, therefore, also considered crucial. The requirement for these two factors, in combination, is highlighted by the absence of koalas at several sites that contained abundant food trees, but that were distal to areas with source animals, and vice-versa.Our research demonstrates the enormous potential for restoration of wildlife habitat on post-mining lands, even for species with specific requirements such as the koala. "The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service providers alike form the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and practical, implementable solutions.The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver focused mine haul road research outcomes, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through end-user driven research solutions for enhanced operational performance.Citation:Handel, D, Miedecke, J, Thompson, R, Tomicek, E and Tulloch, D, 2016. This paper presents the results of a study of case histories of projects on which sinking caissons were used to construct shafts for tunnel construction and other underground works. Design methodologies are reviewed with respect to the impact of soil and groundwater conditions on the performance and constructability of sinking caissons. Factors which have led to success or failure are reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations for future investigation, design and construction activities are presented. Cost data for five recent projects are reviewed and compared to the cost of shaft installation by other means.

Wollongong* is Australia's largest single centre of mining and metallurgy. Wollongong's total employment in manufacturing of basic metal products (over 26,500 in 1972/1973) was almost 50 per cent higher than that of Newcastle and double that of any other Australian city. Although the great bulk of this employment was in steelmaking, Wollongong's copper industry was also a significant employer. Wollongong's total employment in mining (4,900 in 1971) was second only to that of Newcastle among Australian mining centres. Although the bulk of Wollongong's mining is of coal, there is also considerable mining of blue metal, sand and clay. Accident rates continue to show that underground mining jobs areamong the most hazardous occupations in the United States and roof bolter operators continue to have one of the highest accident incident rates (MSHA, 1991) despite efforts by labor, government, and industry to reduce and eliminate work-related hazards. In the last two decades we have seen technical innovations such as the ATRS, and there has been an increased emphasis on hazard awareness through programs such as MSHA's REAP, but bolter operators continue to be injured and killed. Researchers at West Virginia University examined risk in the roof bolter's job and developed new approaches to accident and injury prevention. The study concentrated on the workers' job performance, machinery and the work environment to identify miner's risk and hazard exposure while bolting.

Hedges Gold Pty. Ltd. mines and processes a lateritic gold orebody approximately 120 km south east of Perth in the Darling plateau. The operation is approximately 26 km from the town of Boddington and 31 km from the town of Dwellingup. Hedges operates under The Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, Licence Number 3183. Presently, nine Limitations and Conditions are applicable to the tailings dam. These conditions apply to maximum discharge/disposal quantity permitted. Hedges mine is located in state Forest within the eastern, low rainfall section of the Darling Range and within the waler catchment area of the Murray River. Ore is carted by 120 tonne haulpacks to the plant. The plant and tailings dam is on private farm land some six kms from the mine.

A preliminary examination of the Dayton iron deposit was made in 1941 and 1942 by Paul E. Pesonen and O. H. Metzger, engineers of the Bureau of Nines. Trenching and sampling were recommended, to be followed by core drilling if favorable results were obtained. The Bureau of Mines conducted a project at the property from June to December 1942. The deposit is in sec. 6, T. 17 N., R. 23 E.; sec. 31, T. 18 N., R. 23 E.; sec. 36, T. 18 N., R. 22 E.; and sec. 1, T. 17 N., R. 22 E., M. D. B. & M., about 15 miles west of Lahontan Reservoir in Lyon and Storey Counties, Nev. It lies at an altitude of about 4,500 feet north of the Carson Plains, in the foothill section of mountains that rise to about 7,000 feet to the north of the property. The deposit may be reached by driving 12.5 miles northeast of Dayton over U. S. Highway 50, thence northerly 2.7 miles over a dirt road to the property. The climate is hot and dry in summer, with occasional thunderstorms some of cloudburst variety, and frequent high winds. Winters are usually moderate, with light snowfall and some subfreezing temperature.

"In the last decade, the construction industry has witnessed significant changes in the project delivery systems and contractual relationships between the general contractors (GC) and Deep Foundation Specialty Contractors. The Deep Foundation industry, especially including industry specialty subcontractors, have experienced a significant increase in requests that project risks be transferred through contract documents to subcontractors and suppliers with a decrease in margins for the industry. GCs regularly revise their form subcontracts to take into account recent experiences/contractual trends and newly issued judicial precedent, an exercise that is less frequently undertaken by subcontractors and suppliers. These contradictory trends are at the base of the ethical analysis of subcontracts that comprises the subject matter of this paper. Using contracts as a risk management tool in order to mitigate the general contractor’s risks in the context of dynamic changes in the legislative environment will also be addressed. Furthermore, another possibility for risk mitigation for the industry is to actively promote the introduction of the latest technical developments into the contract documents.CONTRACTS’ ETHICSFor thousands of years, ethics have been a constant presence in our lives and have been debated by different branches of philosophy.
