Computer models of metallurgical circuits are extensively utilised in design, and prediction of overall plant separation performance. As always, in the final optimised flowsheet design there is a compromise between the recovery of values and grade of the circuit output. This paper mathematically examines various circuit options for the generation of a heavy mineral concentrate from a generic mineral sands wet concentrator plant. Based on data derived from testwork, any particular mineral sand has a unique release curve describing the separation performance of the heavy mineral suite. Models are constructed that combine particular stage output streams as feed to other stages in various configurations. The ramifications of each option are discussed and reasons why one particular option is selected over the others examined.

Under a DOE-funded project, four advanced flotation technologies (the Jameson cell, the Outokumpu HG Tank Cell, an open column and a packed column) were evaluated at the benchscale to identify the technology or combination of technologies that best improved fine coal recovery and reduced processing costs. The results indicated that two-stage application of the Jameson and packed column cells provided the optimal performance. Subsequently, proof-of-concept scale testing was conducted at the Cyprus Emerald Coal Preparation Plant. The results confirmed that levelized production costs were lower using two-stage cleaning with the Jameson cell followed by the packed column.

With the exception of the development of large scale mining equipment (haul trucks, draglines, shovels, etc.), there are likely few other candidates responsible for the ability to exploit large tonnage, low grade deposits, than the development of large capacity comminution equipment and circuits; crushers and grinding mills. Ball mills are often the final step in the comminution process and are responsible for providing what should be the optimum particle size distribution of ore to subsequent mineral concentration steps in the flowsheet. Because comminution processes are such high cost centers for milling operations, both capital and operating costs, an enormous amount of research has been conducted to study and model their performance, in order to improve efficiencies (Kelsall, et al., 1969; Austin et al., 1984; Napier-Munn, et al., 1999; Powell and Smit, 2001). With respect to modeling ball mills, estimates of the breakage rates for individual size classes of ore particles are fundamental, as are the particle size class breakage functions (the progeny of particle sizes produced from breaking a coarser particle size class), also termed appearance functions. Fundamental research into particle breakage in tumbling mills focuses on how much energy is input into single particles versus how they break and what size distribution of particles results. Several test methods, including JKMRC?s well known dual pendulum test and drop weight test, have been developed for the breakage of coarse particles down to 6 mm in size (Napier-Munn, et al., 1999). Work on the breakage of finer particles is still an area of intense research and single particle breakage is being investigated as are multiple particle, fixed bed methods (Hoffler and Herbst, 1990; Bourgeois et al., 1992; Whiten, 2007).

Phase 06 of the Los Bronces mine, currently under extraction for development, has the particularity of being close to the installations and buildings of a neighboring copper mine. Therefore, the blasts must ensure the continuity of the operation without affecting the nearby structures of the neighboring district, which include Maintenance sheds and Warehouse. Specifically, the safeguards consider a scenario that includes: - Flyrock projections (<150m) - Edge profile studies - Vibrations according to the NCh3577 standard - Nitrous gases Additionally, Phase 06 is also within Los Bronces, so strict control over spillage into the pit is necessary to avoid blocking ramp access to this level. The challenge lies in protecting not only the operation and facilities of the neighboring mining district but also the operability of Los Bronces. Thus, addressing these considerations, blasting configurations are developed with prior simulation of vibration models, flyrock, and spillage in all blasts, with strict control of technical design and implementation to ensure the results. Currently, blasts are successfully executed with control of projections based on the proximity of the projects, vibration (<40mm/s) with decoupling of holes of 17 mm/s between holes, reactive rock tests for explosive selection (loading advancement), and spillage simulation inside the pit according to the loading design; thus, ensuring operational continuity and mine development.

The overall supply of platinum is forecast to rise more than the demand, and market deficit will narrow somewhat, but is still substantial at about 480 000 ounces. Because of this deficit, the price of platinum is expected to remain high, not taking into account the impetus from funds and speculators. With this strong demand for platinum and the high price, platinum producers still need to initiate projects to not only sustain current production, but also expand output into the high demand. However, the rise in the platinum price does not entirely offset the drop in revenue due to the strong rand. Consequently, in the current economic environment, executives and managers are under extreme pressure to initiate only the highest yielding projects and implementing them successfully. During the initiation phase of a project, the cost of changing concepts is the least, and strategic project decisions are the most important. It is during this phase that the most value can be added to a project, therefore requiring inputs from highly skilled, creative and experienced people. This paper will discuss thought processes and paradigms during the initiation of projects that will assist project owners in the selection and initiation of successful and profitable projects. The project initiation process will also be discussed outlining selection models, risk analyses and funding considerations.

Safe and successful mine closure represents a fundamental work element that needs to accommodate the geochemical conditions existing at the completion of the mining and ore processing effort. Given the interests in limiting costs and time associated with mine closure efforts enhanced prior understanding of the geochemical conditions likely to exist upon exhaustion of the economic reserves can provide important benefits. The purpose of this paper is to document the benefits associated with geochemical modeling and understanding how the ore formation process may impact mine closure efforts, using one ore deposit type as an example. Specifically, this paper will emphasize the geochemical processes leading to the formation of sandstone-hosted uranium roll-type deposits and how the resultant concentrations and distributions of ore and gangue phases need to be incorporated into understanding the geochemical conditions projected to exist at the end of mineral recovery efforts. The paper will describe the evolution of geochemical conditions leading to ore body formation and the geochemical effects induced by open pit mining and how these may be used to understand both the geochemical controls and constraints on residual mine water. In addition, a discussion will be provided on how these conditions may be simulated by solution equilibria and kinetic modeling to develop optimum approaches to achieve applicable closure standards. This paper will also discuss specific augmentations to existing industry standard solution equilibria and kinetic models and associated thermodynamic databases to maximize the predictive accuracy of the geochemical modeling results. The benefits of understanding the electrochemically reactive behavior of uranium and associated gangue phases and incorporating this behavior into mine closure efforts will be presented. The culmination of the benefits of the geochemical modeling will ultimately be the development of a sustainable approach to uranium mine closure that is based upon an engineered environment designed to return the ore body to stable geochemical conditions.

THE subject of the constitution of copper-iron mattes has received considerable attention in recent years by Keller,1 Bolles,2 Hofman,3 and Gibb and Philp.4 Still more recently Friedrich, Röntgen, Wiedmann, Heyn and Bauer, and Leroux have published, in some instances, elaborate researches on the various systems of the sulphides, and the sulphides and their respective metals, which enter into the constitution of mattes, and have added very greatly to the knowledge of the subject. The work of Friedrich has been especially fruitful. But to date no effort has been made to correlate the data obtained in the latter researches and apply then to the study of the product called " matte," which is made in such large quantities by copper and lead-smelters. In this paper we propose to determine, by metallographic and chemical means, the constitution of copper-iron and copper-lead mattes in the light of the recent data above mentioned. We do not discuss copper-nickel mattes or speisses (artificial arsenides). The paper is divided into three sections I. A review and discussion of the various binary systems of the metallic, sulphides, and the binary systems of various metals and their respective sulphides entering into the constitution of mattes; also a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of these sulphides. II. A description of the results obtained from the chemical and metallographic examinations of the samples of copper-iron and copper-lead-iron matte obtained from various plants.

"Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

A crucial step in the acquisition by one company of the assets of another, the acquisition of the stock of another company, or the merger of two com-ponies, is the legal due diligence which needs to be performed in order for the acquirer to ascertain or confirm the obligations, liabilities and exposures to risk that are being assumed along with the assets or corporate stock being acquired. Where the obligations, liabilities, or exposures to risk arise from existing contracts, or from pending lawsuits, administrative proceedings, or threats of these actions, those matters are relatively straightforward to discover by careful review of the files of the party whose assets or stock is being acquired. However, where a company is engaged in ongoing mining or processing operations and has operated or owned mining proper-. ties, there are many sources of liability and exposure to risk which could have major adverse economic consequences to the acquiring party and which are not revealed, or at least are not clearly delineated, by the records of the company whose stock or assets are being acquired.

Researchers from the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted geologic investigations in an area of the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, that included the 5300-107 demonstration stope using underhand longwall cut-and-fill mining. Structural analysis of the area suggested that argillite beds form planes of weakness between blocks of brittle quartzite, and energy may be released along these planes and at the junctures of fractures. Mapping argillite beds and fractures in the stope wall rock showed that the planes of these features diverged and that their attitudes corresponded from one wall to the other. Seismic analysis showed that the number and location of events varied as each cut was mined, with about 39 pct of the total number of events occurring above the cut being mined, about 54 pct below, and 7 pct at the same elevation.

Introduction Industrial exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with injury and discomfort. Certain industries, notably mining, construction, and forestry, involve complex 6 degrees of freedom vibration. Laboratory-based studies of vibration are essential for controlled and systematic evaluation of the human responses to vibration2. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether the duration of the vibration exposure, and rest between vibrations, significantly influence the subjective ratings of comfort during laboratory-based studies of vibration. Methods Subjects: The cumulative vibration dose was calculated, and was below the health guidance caution zone recommended by International standards3. The experimental procedures were approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Ten adult subjects participated in this pilot experiment. All subjects completed the entire experimental paradigm; no subjects complained of pain during or after the experiment. Experimental Design: The experiment consisted of four blocks of vibration exposures; either 15 or 20 seconds of vibration (1 df:Z axis, 3 df:XY plane, 3df:YZ plane, or 6 df) alternating with either 5 or 10 seconds rest. The order of presentation of the four blocks was randomized. Each of the blocks was composed of 37 individual sinusoidal vibration exposures in randomized sequence. This abstract focused on ten identical trials, (6.3 Hz vertical vibration, 0.55 m/s2 RMS) interspersed within each block, in order to assess whether the subjects’ comfort ratings systematically varied between the 15 or 20 vibration exposures, the 5 or 10 second rest between vibrations, or within each block. The experiment involved 43 minutes of vibration within the 62 minute experiment. Vibration Apparatus: A commercial parallel robotic platform was used to apply the specific vibration exposures (R2000, Parallel Robotics Systems Corporation, Hampton, New Hampshire). The subjects sat on a passenger seat from a 1992 Honda Accord that was rigidly mounted to the robotic platform (Figure 1). This robotic system performed the specific vibration exposures operating under closed-loop displacement control. A custom-written Matlab program automated the testing sequence.

AMONG the recent mining and metallurgical developments in England great interest has been shown in the development of an iron-ore field covering 26,0.00 acres in Northamptonshire, containing 500,¬000,000 long tons of ore; and the erection at Corby, by Stewarts & Lloyds, of a modern basic bessemer steel plant and tube works. The entire project was planned to cost about £3,300,000. Many improvements have been made in the varied equipment that is being installed, some of which has set mew records for massiveness. There is, for instance, a new roll crusher, which has been manufactured by Hadfields, Limited, of Sheffield, the largest ever built in England, and weighing 130 tons. This machine, shown in Fig. 1, as erected at the Hadfields shops, is primarily designed to take blocks of iron ore as they come from the steam shovel. In mechanized tunnelling operations, performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequately dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole project. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer’s point of view.

Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. The sillimanite group includes the aluminosilicate minerals sillimanite, kyanite and and alusite, all of which have the same chemical composition (Al2SiO5). This discussion also includes the closely related mineral, mullite(about Al6Si3O15), which, although rare in nature, is produced artificially for industrial use. All of the minerals in this group have a low coefficient of thermal expansion and high corrosion resistance. This makes them desirable for refractory applications, especially in the steel and foundry industries. Other uses include electrical insulators, abrasives and household ceramic products. The minerals in the sillimanite group decompose with an irreversible expansion at temperatures between 1,300° C and 1,600° C (2,372° F and 2,912° F). Sillimanite and and alusite have relatively small expansion on decomposition (4 percent to 6 percent) and, therefore, can be used as aggregates in refractory products. Kyanite’s expansion on decomposition is large (18 percent). So it is sometimes used to balance shrinkage of other materials such as clays in refractory mixtures. For applications requiring high-temperature volume stability, mullite is more desirable. As an additive, mullite improves resistance to creep and corrosion, and imparts thermal and electrical insulating properties.

Ammonium thiosulphate is a non-cyanide lixiviant for gold leaching. The major problem is the high reagent consumption. A combination of 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4, 3M NH3 was used to leach a copper-bearing gold ore at pH 10.2 for 24 hours. 30 kg/t of thiosulphate was consumed. Oxygen and copper species were found to be responsible for thiosulphate decomposition. The thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to around 17 kg/t by adding chelating agent, reducing copper sulphate concentration to 0.001 M and replacing CuSO4 by NiSO4. The increase of pulp density might reduce the thiosulphate consumption to around 17 kg/t. By regulating the oxygen supply, the thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to 10 kg/t.
