Previous studies have shown that separation of clay minerals from non-clay minerals is the key to economic recovery of the phosphate from the waste phosphatic clays (slime) which represent about 20- 300/0 of the phosphate mined. Small hydrocyclones of different sizes (4" and 6") were tested for sizing the slime at +10 microns in order to remove most of the clay minerals. The effect of design variables and operating parameters were evaluated. Multi-stage cycloning and the effect of dispersant were also investigated. Chemical and mineralogical analyses of different size fractions of both the underflow and overflow samples indicated satisfactorily separation efficiency.

Since 1982 standard calibration materials recommended for respirable crystalline silica analysis by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) P7 Infrared Method and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) X-ray Diffraction (XRD) Analytical Method 7500 have undergone minor changes in size distribution. However, a critical assumption has been made that the crystalline silica in ambient mine atmosphere respirable dust samples has also remained essentially unchanged in particle size distribution. The objective of this work, therefore, is to compare recent particle size distributions of underground coal mine dust and the silica component of these dusts with estimated aerodynamic particle size distributions of calibration standard materials MIN-U-SIL 5, Berkeley 5, and SRM 1878 used by two crystalline silica analysis techniques. This work provides resolution to a previously reported discrepancy involving the proper sample dilution for the particle sizing method used. Dust impactor sampling data for various locations in 13 underground coal mines were collected between 1991 and 1998 and analyzed for the respirable mass median aerodynamic diameters. The data suggest that the MSHA P7 Method will underestimate the silica content of the sample by at most 8.5 % in the median size range of 0.9–3.6 µm and that it is unlikely one would obtain any significant error in the MSHA P7 Method analysis when the method uses Berkeley 5, MIN-U-SIL 5, or SRM 1878 as a calibration standard material. The results suggest that the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 would be more appropriate for a dust sample that is representative of the total (no cyclone classifier) rather than the respirable airborne dust, particularly since the mass fraction in the size range below 4 µm is usually a small percentage of the total airborne dust mass. However, the NIOSH Analytical Method 7500 is likely to underestimate the silica content of an airborne respirable dust sample by only 5–10 %. The results of this study also suggest that any changes that may have occurred in the median respirable size of airborne coal mine dust are not significant enough to cause any appreciable error in the current methods used for respirable crystalline silica analysis.

"INTRODUCTION At 9:12 a. m. on April 16, 1947, the ammonium nitrate cargo in hold 4 of the S. S. Grandcamp, a 7,176 gross-ton Liberty ship owned by the French Government, detonated at pier 0 of the Texas City Terminal Railway Co., Texas City, Galveston County, Tex.This detonation was the first of a series of explosions and fires that took the lives of approximately 600 persons, injured 3,000 other persons, and caused a property damage and business loss that will exceed $58,800,000. It has been estimated that the life, accident, and workmen's compensation insurance loss will be $8,200,000.At 1:10 a. m. on April 17, 1947, the ammonium nitrate cargo in hold 5 of the S.S. High Flyer, a 6,214-gross-ton Liberty ship owned and operated by the Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., Inc., detonated at pier L. This explosion materially increased the property damage caused by the first explosion, in between 50 and 100 persons, and is believed to have taken the life of only one person.The exact number of casualties resulting from the Texas City disaster may never be known. On June 22, 1947, 65 days after the explosions, the red Cross and the Texas Department of Public safety repoted:,""Identified dead, 405; unidentified dead, 63; believed missing, 100; injured, 3,000; hospital¬ized, 600; still in hospitals, 37."""

Thallium is not significantly removed from mining influenced water (MIW) through conventional treatment in hydroxide precipitation plants. We experimentally investigated modifications to hydroxide precipitation schemes to concurrently remove thallium. Our goal was to determine cost effective and efficient hydroxide precipitation process modifications for thallium removal. Strategies for removal targeted multiple mechanisms including sorption, co-precipitation and/or oxidation of monovalent thallium. Modifications were tested in batch and included oxidant evaluation and the role of manganese. Removal of thallium was enhanced by the addition of permanganate as well as oxygen by aeration. In addition, contact with retained solids and the initial manganese concentration played an important role in the extent of thallium removal observed. This paper reports on our findings and discusses the implications in the removal of thallium with minor modifications to the hydroxide precipitation process.

We had a cold, gray winter here in Kansas City and I spent a lot of time watching out my den window at the squirrels and birds trying to get by in the lousy weather. I remember too well working in the cold, loading shots. I was frostbitten several times since I couldn’t tie in MS connectors with gloves on. Those old connectors had a piece of detonating cord on either end of a metal tube that held the delay and you tied them to the trunk lines with square knots. Doing this on a “warm” day in Alaska or Montana shooting ditch for a pipeline could be a frosty experience. Also remember how hard it was to connect up electric caps (detonators to you new guys) in the cold. Now I don’t want you to feel sorry for me ‘cause I suspect most of you younger fellows have also paid your dues in the cold and for that matter in the heat too. Wowee, the heat at the bottom of a Chicago dolomite quarry in August was enough to fry the brains of all that were there. Maybe that’s why the third deck of my brains doesn’t exist.

Confirmation that acid drainage (AD) was a significant environmental issue for the Australian minerals industry came in 1992 with the first national workshop on the topic. Subsequently the extent of AD was documented in a national survey published in 1997. The recommendations arising out of that survey served as a platform for actions by government, industry and industry-support organisations such as the Australian Centre for Mining Environmental Research (ACMER) to enable more effective prevention and management of AD. This paper briefly documents the extent of AD in the industry, the government regulations and guidelines for AD management, industry initiatives, the role of ACMER and other organisations in assisting industry through research and technology transfer, and the efforts being made to deal with AD at derelict mines. Future management of AD in the industry will be assisted by the linkage of Australia (through ACMER) into the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) which is facilitating the interchange of knowledge on AD as well as coordinating global research on the topic.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input and published literature. The results indicate that jackleg drills are involved in more groundfall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill, and jackleg-drill-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Practical mechanized alternatives to jackleg drills for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings have not yet been realized. Small, versatile mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-drill-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jackleg drills are being used. IntroductionJackleg drill is a generic name for a handheld, rotary, percussion rock drill equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust (Fig. 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jackleg drills are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons, which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in.) (Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012). Jackleg drills typically weigh 46.7 kg (103 lb), but the weight can approach 54.4 kg (120 lb) after being fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses (McKibbin and Clark, 2001). In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in.) diameter holes up to 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock."

This report summarizes studies by the Bureau of Mines in developing a simple method for estimating the phosphorus pentoxide (P205) content of finely ground sedimentary phosphate ores and beneficiated products. The method used involved leaching, filtration, and precipitation. The Bureau found that measurement of the volume of ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate obtained from samples containing 16.8 to 37.7 percent P205 and the use of an appropriate calibration curve permitted estimates of percentage of P205 content accurate within ± 1.1 to ± 2.6 percent, respectively, at the 95-percent confidence limits. Incidental to mineral dressing and petrographic investigations of western phosphate ores in 1959, the Bureau of Mines undertook development of a simple process-control method for rapid on-the-spot evaluation of phosphate-mineral recovery. Because of the fine-grained and obscure character of western phosphate ores, chemical, rather than microscopic or petrographic, techniques were investigated. The described method involves acid decomposition of the ore or product, filtration, addition of ammonium molybdate reagent to the filtrate, and centrifuging and measuring the volume of yellow ammonium phosphomolybdate precipitate produced.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

Coal mining in Indiana is limited to the south-western portion of the state, with coal currently being recovered in 19 counties. The coal-producing area of the state covers approximately 6,500 square miles. Although most of the coal in Indiana is recovered by surface mining methods, a small percentage is recovered through underground mining. To date, 40 percent of the known coal reserves have been removed. Indiana has about 33 billion tons of identified coal reserves, of which approximately 17 billion tons are recoverable using current technology. Of this recoverable coal, about 15 billion tons are recoverable by underground mining and 2 billion tons are recoverable by surface mining methods. The State of Indiana has regulated the environmental impacts of coal mining since 1941. Indiana was the second state in the nation to pass legislation requiring mined land reclamation. Its SMCRA regulatory program was approved July 29,1982, and its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved July 29, 1982.

After the Krupp-Renn process was shown to be unsuitable for treatment of the Greek nickeliferous laterites, the LM process was developed. It involved roasting reduction up to metallic iron in a Rotary Kiln (R/K) and smelting in an Electric Furnace (E/F). Ferronickel (with 15% Ni) produced in the E/F, was upgraded to 90-95% Ni in an 02 converter. Raw Ni was then electrolyzed to pure Ni. The LM process was not applied for very long however, due to various problems. So, the Larco process was developed, i.e., pre-reduction in R/Ks, smelting of the calcine in E/Fs for ferronickel production (15% Ni) and enrichment to 20% Ni, in an O2 converter. Until now, many technological improvements have been invented and applied or adjusted to the process, which have made it a fully reliable and competitive one. sohe of the improvements were the invention and application of a new granulation process for liquid ferronickel, the modification of the existing R/Ks, E/Fs and converters and the design of new ones, and others that are described in the paper. A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a wellrecognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulfide ores and concentrates. The pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores was first commercially applied in 1985, at Homestake Mining Company’s McLaughlin mine in the United States. Since that time numerous refractory gold and other high temperature pressure oxidation facilities have been built throughout the world. The design of each facility was met with unique challenges and opportunities which have led to an array of plant configurations, pressure oxidation autoclave sizes, and sulfide oxidation capacities. This paper presents a historical review of high temperature pressure oxidation operations and current projects in execution with a focus on the autoclave vessel design, circuit configuration, and unit sulfide oxidation capacity as a basis for characterization and comparison.

Penny, R. B. Sutherland, J. W. van den Munckhof and One Visitor: Mr D. J. McLaren. The Chairman declared the meeting open and, on behalf of the Branch, thanked the President for coming from Johannesburg to attend. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUSGENERALMEETING As the Minutes of the General Meeting held on June 18, 1969 had not yet been published in the Journal, the Chairman moved that their adoption and the discussion thereof be deferred to the next General Meeting. OFFICE BEARERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR THE YEAR 1969/70 The Chairman announced that the outgoing Committee had elected the following office bearers for the coming year: Chairman: N. A. Honnet; Vice-Chairman: J. N. Saunders; Immediate Past Chairman: J. G. Kirchner. The Chairman then read a letter from the scrutineers reporting that the following had been elected to the Committee: M. S. Grobler, W. R. Lawrie, L. O. W. Leimer, A. T. Lewis, R. S. Pearson, T. Zadkin. The Chairman thanked the scrutineers for their services, and congratulated Messrs Lawrie, Leimer and Zadkin on their re-election and Messrs Grobler, Lewis and Pearson on their election to the Committee. The Chairman announced that he had heard, with regret, that Mr. T. Zadkin would be leaving the O.F.S. at the end of August, 1969. Mr Zadkin had served on the Committee continuously since the inception of the O.F.S. Branch and records showed that he had only failed to attend three General Meetings in over nine years. The Chairman expressed the gratitude of the Branch for Mr Zadkin's invaluable services to the Institute, congratulated him on his well earned promotion and wished him well in his new position. INDUCTION OF CHAIRMAN The Chairman introduced Mr N. A. Honnet to the meeting by briefly outlining his past career and, after congratulating him on his election, called upon him to take the Chair. In congratulating the out-going Chairman on a very successful term of office, Mr Honnet said that due to the absence of many Committee Members for a large portion of the year Mr Kirchner had carried a heavy burden, and he moved a vote of thanks and appreciation for Mr Kirchner's efforts. This was carried unanimously. GENERAL BUSINESS There were no points raised under this heading. MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS The Chairman called on Mr W. R. Lawrie to give his talk on aspects of the Mining and Metallurgical Congress recently held in Britain. This presentation was illustrated with photographic slides and proved of great interest to Members. Mr D. D. Waterman proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Lawrie and the Chairman then asked Mr R. C. J. Goode to contribute to Mr Lawrie's address. Mr Goode thanked Mr Kirchner for his efforts during his very successful term of office and congratulated the in-coming Chairman and Vice-Chairman on their election. He then gave a brief talk on aspects of the Congress not dealt with in Mr Lawrie's address. These included the industry's requirements of graduates, the necessity of their rapid advancement and the desirability of sending such young men to attend future Congresses. Mr Goode announced that two symposiums will be sponsored by the Institute next year, one on Tunnelling and the other on Open Cast Workings.

Although known since 1902, the Capitan iron deposits have not been tined, mainly because of the low grade of the ore. Only a small amount of exploratory work has been done since the discovery. C. H. Johnson, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines in New Mexico in 1942-4, visited the property; as a result, preliminary sampling of the property was done in 1943.2/ Owing to the results of this preliminary work, an extensive development program by wagon drilling was planned and executed early in 1944. Equipment available at that time was limited in the depths that could be reached; and as geologic studies indicated the possibility that other limestone beds below the surface might have been replaced by iron minerals, a supplementary development program by churn drilling to reach greater depths was prosecuted in late 1947 and early 1948, with the author as project engineer.

INDUSTRY has yet to find a universal solution to the problem of engineer personnel selection. Today, the choice of the right man for the right job is even more pressing than ever before. The age of the hard apprenticeship seems to have passed. In its place one finds the interviewer who must determine through personal contact and evaluation of college grades whether a graduate engineer will fit into his company's scheme. The problem, as it is constituted today, may be broken into four parts: Need for better use of human resources (there is a shortage of engineers, scientists, and skilled workers), productivity with higher efficiency, encouragement of personal pride in work performed, and employee's happiness on the job and away from it.

"In this study, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (TC) of shale in two perpendicular directions, vertical and parallel to the bedding of the rock, are firstly measured by experiment. The experimental results show that the CTE of the shale in the vertical direction is 1.69 times as much as that in the parallel direction, while the TC in the parallel direction is 1.83 times larger than that of the vertical direction. Based on the no initial strain assumptions, numerical simulations for the thermal cracking in shale are carried out with the obtained coefficients. Using finite element method and thermal-mechanical coupling theory, two fracture mechanical parameters, KI and J-integral of the shale are also analyzed for the shale thermal fracturing. The simulation results show that both KI and J-integral reach the maximum when the fracturing angle equals to 0° in the shale, namely parallel to the bedding direciton. It is also found that the two fracture parameters decrease with the fracturing angle increasing. Additionally, the thermal fracturing effect of the shale is evaluated under a given scenario. The study is significant for shale oil or gas recovery by in situ pyrolyzing method.INTRODUCTIONOil shale is regarded as a kind of unconventional resource that can contribute to production of shale oil and hydrocarbon gases (Rahm & Dianne, 2011). As is known that there is a large deposit of oil shale in China, and present technology for exploiting oil shale still concentrates on open-pit mining, obtaining shale oil by retorting shale on the ground (Li, Tang, Xue, Zheng, & Du, 2014; Qian, Yin, 2008). However, this technology has a bad effect on the environment and leads to severe resource waste for utilizing oil shale. Exploiting oil shale by in-situ method for ‘green mining’ is widely necessary in China (Kang, Wang, Cao, Liang, Chang, & Liu, 2013; Waters, Dean, Downie, Kerrihard, Austbo, & McPherson, 2009; Zoback, Kohli, Das, & McClure, 2012). One of effective method to exploit shale oil is heating oil shale in-situ underground. For instance, the in-situ conversion process (ICP technique) from Shell Company etc. used a direct heating method, and convectional heating oil shale underground by injecting superheated steam from Mining Technology Institute, Taiyuan University of Technology and constructing horizontal fracture in vertical wellbore from Chevron Company use indirect heating method (Chaudhary, Ehlig, & Wattenbarger, 2011; Hazra, Lee, Economides, & Moridis, 2013; Zhao et al., 2010). The convectional heating method contains complicated procedures with phase transition in double-media of fracture-matrix of oil shale subjected to multi-physical fields coupling including stress, fluid and temperature (Zhao et al., 2010). The characteristics of thermodynamics, solid mechanics and seepage of oil shale have been investigated separately (Hopkins, Rosen, & Hill,1998; Kang, Zhao, & Yang, 2008; Yang, Zhao, Kang, 2010; Zhao, Yang, Feng, Liang, & Kang, 2008; Zhao, Cao, Zhao, Lin, & Wang, 2008). However, it is quite difficult to solve constrained problem of each physical parameter in multi-physical fields coupling for oil shale pyrolysis."

O trabalho está baseado na análise de dados de perto de 200 fornos elétricos a arco de diferente design: convencional, de corrente contínua, de carcaças gémeas, com preaquecimento de sucata no transportador ou em shaft, etc. Incluem-se fornos que processam principalmente sucata, e fornos com carregamento parcial de gusa sólido ou líquido, ferro briquetado a quente (HBI) ou ferro esponja (DRI) a frio ou a quente. São avaliados os consumos de energia elétrica, oxigênio, gás natural e materiais carbonosos; os tempos entre vazamentos, com forno ligado e com forno desligado, assim como a produtividade horária. Com os dados obtidos, se analisa a influência dos metálicos (e seu estado térmico ao momento do carregamento), e o design do forno, sobre os consumos específicos mencionados e a produtividade.

The Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations in two underground mines to determine the actual loads to which bearing plates were subjected when installed in conjunction with full-column resin-grouted bolts and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Vertical displacement gauges installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites show that the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement.

During the months of April and May 1992, the Phelps Dodge Hidalgo smelter underwent a major turnaround. This was the third such turnaround in the life of the facility which was commissioned in 1976. During the third furnace campaign, the smelter processed 5.2 million tons of concentrate producing 2.6 billion pounds of anode copper over a 7.5 year period. The critical path on the fifty-nine (59) day turnaround schedule was the reconstruction of the Outokumpo flash furnace which integrated some modifications with standard rebuild practices. Modifications included incorporation of horizontal cooling jackets throughout the furnace settler as well as the installation of castable refractory in the reaction and uptake shafts.
