The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, was developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer overflows. With only one contract left before completion of the Phase I tunnels—the 12.4 km(7.7 mi.) long Little Calumet leg—the pollution control phase of the 175.7 km(109.2 mi.) long system will be 93% complete, once the Torrence Avenue tunnel project comes to an end. This paper describes the Torrence Avenue tunnel project, currently under construction by the joint venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Kiewit / Shea. Mining of the10.4 km (34,151 feet) long and 8.3 m (27'-4") diameter mainline tunnel was completed in a record thirty-one-weeks period and the concrete lining is nearing completion. Details on the complete muck handling system, numerous mining and concrete lining records will be given.

A major investigative' program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

In spite of all the work that has already been done on ferromanganese deposits, studies on the Atlantic Ocean occurrences are still in their infancy and there is a clear need for investigations concerning the origin, distribution, and resource potential assessment of these deposits. Nevertheless, studies already carried out on northeast Atlantic seamounts indicate the general presence of ferromanganese deposits of hydrogenetic origin, i.e. deposits formed by direct precipitation of colloidal, hydrated metal oxides that are scavenged from the water column on hard-rock substrates. The hydrogenetic precipitation promotes the enrichment of ferromanganese crusts in many trace metals, most of which are of economic interest, such as Co, Ni, Te, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements and thus ferromanganese crusts are considered an important metal resource.

This report describes the design, development and manufacture of production stoper drills and results of their field tests, it is shown that underground stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using these pneumatic drills. The design concept of these drills is a radical departure from the standard valved rifle bar type drill machine design to a drill featuring a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and a shroud tube. Six drills were manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

"A model for fragmentation in bench blasting that originates from dimensional analysis of fragmentation in asteroid collisions is presented. Percentiles of the size distribution are obtained in the basic model as the product of a rock strength-to-explosive energy ratio, a bench shape factor, a scale factor or characteristic size and a percentage passing-related factor. The parameters of the model are fitted to 169 bench blasts in different sites and rock types, bench geometries and delay times, for which thefragmentation of the muckpile was obtained by sieving. The basic model is found to significantlyimprove with an additional factor describing the rock mass structure in terms of the spacing and orientation of discontinuities, and another one describing the delay between successive contiguous shots; the latter is conveniently formulated as a function of the P-wave velocity and the holes spacing. The rock strength property chosen is the strain energy at rupture that, together with the explosive energy density in the rock (or energy powder factor), forms a combined rock strength/explosive energy nondimensionalfactor. The model, called xP-frag, is applicable from 5 to 100 percentile fragment sizes, with all parameters determined from the fits significant to a 0.05 level. The expected error of the prediction is below 25 % at any percentile. These errors are half to one third of the errors expected with the best prediction models available to date."

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the small town of Andacollo, Chile (population 14,000) in the fourth region. It is approximately 35 miles by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena, and Santiago lies about 300 miles to the south (see map.) Site elevation varies between 3300 feet and 4200 feet. The climate at the site is moderate but arid, with an average annual rainfall of only five inches. Because there is little rain, and the temperature varies only a few degrees (57"F to 75°F); there are no freezing, solution dilution, or pad saturation problems. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

This project focused effort on three separate areas: demonstration of a low seam longwall illumination system, design of illumination systems for low coal auger miners, and an assessment of machine lighting systems for machinery used to mine low seam coal. Results indicated illumination systems can be purchased by the mine operators of low coal seams. These systems can be supplied with the equipment as a factory integrated system or can be retrofitted to the machine or longwall equipment.

Abstract: Triaxial tests were conducted on the schist specimens with various anisotropic angles under confining pressures of 0, 7 and 15 MPa, and axial stress-axial strains, were measured and plotted for various conditions. The results obtained reveal the effects of schistose on the strength and deformability of the rock very clearly. Peak strength of the specimens for 00 and 900 schistose orientations are nearly the same. Modulus of elasticity of this rock varies with anisotropic angle. For 0 orientation modulus of elasticity increases to a maximum. Confining pressure increases the peak strength and improves the rock deformability. However, this effect is not the same for various orientations, and there are no similar trends for each anisotropy direction. Analysis of the results shows that consideration of a linear failure criterion such as Mohr-Coulomb is appropriate for the prediction of rock behaviour up to 10 MPa, rather than a non-linear one. The analysis also reveals that the friction angle and cohesion are affected by the anisotropy orientation, and this effect is more important for the cohesion than the friction angles. Mais cette effet bn est pas unigue pour les different stratification, et pour les diferents directions no– isotrop it n y a pas le meme solution. L analyse des resulitats montre que le criterre de ruin comme mohr–colomb est moderate pour le pousse lateral jusq av lo mega pascal , et ce n est pas neccesaire d utiliser de criterre no–linear . Cette analyse aussi montre que l angle de frottement et cohsion est en relation de la direction no–isotrop, et cette effet est olus important pour le cohsion par a port de l angle de frottement . Für 0° vermehrt Orientierung modulus der Elastizität zu einem Maximum. Einschränkender Druck vermehrt die maximale Kraft und verbessert den Felsen deformability. Aber ist diese Wirkung nicht das gleiche für verschiedene Orientierungen, und es gibt keine ähnlichen Tendenzen für jede anisotropic Richtung. Analyse der Ergebnisse zeigt jener Überlegung Kriterium eines linearen Ausfalls wie zum Beispiel Mohr Coulomb passend für die Voraussage von Felsen Verhalten bis zu 10 MPa, anstatt eines nicht linear ist. Die Analyse offenbart auch, daß der Reibung Winkel und Bindekraft werden beeinflußt von der anisotropic Orientierung, und diese Wirkung wichtiger für die Bindekraft ist, als der Reibung Winkel

This presentation identifies some of the more common problems associated with cofferdam construction. After the various problems are identified, they are briefly explained and possible solutions and preventive measures are noted. Photographic slides used during the seminar illustrate the conditions. This discussion is limited to cofferdams which are braced structures excavated inside to allow access for construction. The common procedure is to drive sheet piling and then alternatively install bracing and excavate. They can be located either on land or in water. Loads are applied by soil, water, surcharge pres-sure, eccentricities, and impact loads. The loads are resisted by the sheet piling, the bracing, and the soil below the bottom of the excavation; each of these three components must be capable of resisting the applied loads.

In 2006, a total of 2,113 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 14.2% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n=1,955) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n=158) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 71.0% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.2%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.3%).

Dimension stone is a natural stone (granite, marble, limestone, sandstone and slate) that can be quarried, cut and shaped to conform to acceptable industry standards for size, consistency and durability. There are numerous outlets for the finished product in exterior and interior architectural and design applications. A continued growth market is with residential usage— particularly in new, upscale construction. This has become a competitive market between domestic producers and lower cost imported products. These imported products have become available at many of the building supply retail outlets and have increased the use of stone in residential construction and renovation. The traditional architectural application of dimension stone is tied to commercial and institutional building construction trends and market. There has been a noticeable increased usage of stone in the Sun Belt. This stone is usually supplied by local fabricating shops. It is used in the exterior and interior of shopping malls. This market generally uses local stone sources. It has increased the demand for sandstone, limestone and quartzite in this region of the country.

"The mining industry faces growing challenges from more complex and lower grade deposits, rising costs, limited energy and water availability, and increasing societal pressure to operate more sustainably. Mining operations need to be more efficient, not just to reduce environmental impact, but also to remain economically viable.To maximize profitability and sustainability, existing operations and new projects must consider integration and optimization of all stages of production. A mining operation is essentially a series of inter-connected processes, with the performance and outputs of each stage affecting the subsequent ones. Optimizing stages in isolation can result in sub-optimal overall performance.The industry has long recognized the benefits of holistic optimization using the Mine-to-Mill concept, and there are many well documented successes. However, it is increasingly common to observe operations simply increasing explosive consumption in the mine and expecting optimization of the entire value chain (mining and processing). For true holistic optimization, blast intensity is not necessarily increased, but rather adjusted to best suit the requirements of the different types of ores treated, the circuit configuration and equipment, installed comminution power and the downstream beneficiation processes. It is a fully integrated effort with optimization of many aspects in the mine, comminution and separation processes.To be successful, optimization of the production chain from mine to process requires a site-specific, structured methodology supported by extensive ore characterization, auditing, surveys, data analysis, mathematical modelling simulations and a cost / benefit analysis. Following this methodology, optimization strategies are rapidly identified and implemented considering mine and plant constraints. Management needs to set up appropriate KPIs and site personnel need to be trained for the new operating strategies to be successfully incorporated into site practices and procedures in the production environment. This will ensure the benefits are achieved and maintained. This paper describes the methodology employed by Hatch to improve overall efficiency and profitability from mine to process. Two case study examples at Russian gold operations and benefits achieved are presented."

In this study, a parametric study was conducted using FLAC3D numerical models to examine the impact of oblique loading, generated from seam dip, on the strength and the failure propagation pattern of a stone pillar using two simplified geometry types. In type 1, the sidewalls of the pillars were assumed to be perpendicular to the roof and the floor, while in type 2, the sidewalls of pillars were assumed to be vertical. The complex pillar geometry in dipping mines was frequently modeled using these two geometries. To capture a complete picture of the effect of seam dip on pillar stability, the modeled width-to-height (W/H) ratio of the pillars, in situ stress field, and pillars roof/floor interfaces were systematically varied to account for the potential distribution of values for these parameters across the underground stone mines in USA. Results from the numerical modeling indicate that dipping pillars have reduced strength compared with horizontal pillars. Also, an asymmetric failure propagation pattern could be obtained depending on an interaction between the W/H ratio, seam dip, in situ stresses, and pillar geometry.

"INTRODUCTION Previous investigations of the Boulder City station of the Bureau of Mines have demonstrated that low-grade domestic chromite concentrates can be roasted with carbon to obtain selective reduction of the contained iron, and that the reduced iron can be removed by acid leaching of the roasted products to produce residues with higher chromium iron ratios. Thus, some chromite ores or concentrates that originally contain too much iron to be acceptable for the production of ferrochrome can, by this treatment, be rendered marketable as ""high-grade"" chromite. 3/The present report supplements the earlier work of the Bureau and re¬cords the results of small-scale laboratory tests investigating the effects of:1. Temperature and time of the reducing roast.2. Chromite and carbon particle size.3. Ratio of carbon to chromite in the initial roast mixture.4. Variations in the alumina and silica content of the ore.5. Back-oxidation of the roast product.6. Temperature and time of leaching .of roast product.This work differs from that done previously in that particular emphasis was placed on roast mixtures containing just enough carbon for the reduction of the iron in the chromite, whereas some two and one-half times this amount of carbon was used in the earlier work.In addition to these tests, the mechanism of the production reactions was examined for the purpose of explaining the precance of acid-soluble chromium, which occurs under certain conditions of chromite reduction."

Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders. The four top barite-producing countries in the world are China, India, Morocco and the United States. China is currently the largest exporter of barite followed by India. More than 95 percent of the barite mined today is used by the petroleum industry as driller’s mud. The rest is used in the industrial market and the medical field. Most of the barite mined in the United States is in Nevada. This year, mining activity has increased due to an increase in oil exploration/development. This was caused by an increase in the crude oil prices.

Lime, soda ash and similar precipitants have been the industry standard for treatment of acid rock drainage (ARD) because of their proven ability and low per-gallon operational cost. However, these methods carry serious environmental drawbacks and high life-cycle costs. KEECO’s Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) technology has all the positive characteristics of conventional ARD-treatment systems but none of the drawbacks. SME achieves highly effective treatment in a single step, provides options for ARD prevention and recovery of metals, requires lower capital expenditures, generates smaller volumes of higher-density sludge, consistently passes leach tests, and eliminates long-term liabilities associated with potential metal remobilization and hazardous waste landfilling.
