During the last quarter-century, exploration for metallic deposits in Maine has been sporadic with peaks generally coinciding with periods of high metal prices. Known cases of regional or semi-regional evaluations are few; most efforts have been local and usually intensive. On the basis of broad geologic groups, the State has been divided into five fundamental environments: ( 1) coastal metamorphic belt; (2) southern volcanic belt; (3) Silurian slate belt; ( 4) northern volcanic belt; and ( 5) Devonian slate belt. Although not restricted to these areas, exploration in recent years has been concentrated in the northern and southern volcanic belts. Notable examples of recent exploration activity, directed to sulfide minerals, include: ( 1) the Knox County nickel-copper-bearing ultramafic rocks; (2) the Harborside (Cape Rosier) copper-zinc deposit; (3) the Second Pond (Black Hawk) zinc-copper-lead-silver deposit; ( 4) the Big Hill-Barrett lead-zincsilver- copper-gold zones; (5) the Parmachenee copper-zinc belt; ( 6) the Moxie Lake nickeliferous peridotite; and (7) the Attean quartzmonzonite molybdenum-copper occurrences. The Second Pond and Harborside prospects appear to be close to production. Systematic investigations for non-metallic deposits appear to have been aimed principally toward limestone, asbestos, diatomaceous earth, and spodumene-bearing pegmatites. Advances in prospecting methods, high metal prices, a favorable business outlook, increasing cooperation from large landholders, and some discoveries support the probability of increased exploration activity in Maine during the coming decade.

"After several successful projects on the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike for support of single-stage MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls using rigid inclusions (Controlled Modulus Columns) as an alternate to two-stage MSE walls and surcharge, the Bass River Bridge Widening project presented additional challenges in terms of soil conditions and height of embankment that created opportunities for the design-build ground improvement contractor and its MSE wall-designing partner to enhance their design and construction methods. The specialist contractor decided, in association with the wall system supplier, to perform an independent large scale instrumented test area on the project to demonstrate the ability of the design techniques to model the behavior of the system, as well as the capacity of the rigid inclusions to provide the necessary bearing capacity and settlement control to allow the construction of the highway without any consolidation period. This paper presents a detailed description of the design of the ground improvement system and MSE wall system, as well as the results and conclusions of the monitoring data gathered on the large scale test program. The combination of rigid inclusion ground improvement technologies, such as the CMC system, together with an MSE wall system allows for the rapid and economical construction of high embankment without waiting for a surcharge and consolidation period or the necessity to use a two-stage wall system. In-depth understanding of the design techniques and advantages of this combination will be provided and should be beneficial for any geotechnical engineer or owner looking for innovative solutions to save both time and cost on their projects.1. IntroductionAs development continues on sites with poor ground conditions throughout the world, conventional MSE walls remain a flexible design solution; however, construction of MSE walls in combination with ground improvement is becoming more frequent where extreme differential and/or total settlement prevail due to soft ground conditions. Various techniques have been used in the past in such conditions (e.g. conventional surcharge, staged construction, or two-stage MSE walls), even though these design solutions have typically involved longer waiting times for settlement to occur. As a result, conventional MSE wall design has been combined with a variety of ground improvement techniques consisting of rigid inclusions for an economical and efficient solution with the potential to accelerate construction and limit long term settlement. For the particular subject of this paper, the specialist contractor (Menard) proposed to use CMCs (Controlled Modulus Columns) to support the highest part of the MSE wall. CMCs are grouted displacement rigid inclusions installed in a grid-like pattern using a displacement auger. Before the CMCs are installed, a working platform may first need to be placed to allow equipment to move around the site depending on the ground conditions. Following the CMC ground improvement, an LTP (Load Transfer Platform) is installed prior to the construction of the MSE wall."

"Abstract This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and design issues at two environmentally challenging industrial sites in North America. Environmental regulations set constraints on the design and require versatility in choice of technology.For a proposed bridge, due to protected fish habitat, performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited. The limited subsurface profile indicated a thick upper layer of granular material, thus driving H-piles was considered. However, to limit generation of vibration and noise in the protected area, drilled piles had to be used. During execution, the subsurface profile differed from that in the borings 30 m away. Very soft, saturated silt was encountered at the bottom of the caisson and the length had to be redesigned very quickly while the contractor waited for instruction. For a new structure in uncontrolled fill area, performing soil borings was not allowed. It was known that a layer of peat was present in the area, but no information regarding the thickness and extent. The subsurface profile generally consisted of granular material overlying a thick compressible silt layer. Somewhere within the granular layer peat would likely be encountered. Franki piles were chosen to penetrate the peat and bear in the underlying granular material. During environmental sampling in the area, methane gas was encountered and Franki piles were no longer a viable option due to safety concerns. The foundation system was changed to steel H-piles driven to bedrock, which was more than 50 m below the ground surface and sloping. Rock shoes that would work to significant slopes had to be used in order to increase the likelihood of good embedment within the bedrock. Also, due to obstruction of an approximately 3 m thick debris field that was encountered in the upper granular soils, some of the piles had to be relocated and extra piling needed to compensate for such differences. The results of PDA testing to estimate compressive capacity and a series of lateral load tests are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe design issues that are encountered during construction can be quite problematic and have a significant impact on schedule. In order to avoid such impact on the project, a thorough subsurface investigation should be considered prior to design and construction. Better understanding of environmental regulations also prevents costly changes to the foundation design. This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and the design issues at two environmentally challenging sites in North America.BRIDGEDuring the subsurface investigation for a proposed industrial building complex, several boreholes were drilled within the footprint or in close proximity of various structures, with Standard Penetration (SPT) sampling of the upper coarse-grained soils (sand/gravel) and undisturbed sampling of the lower fine-grained soils (silt/clay). The SPT blow counts (N60) were corrected by a factor of 1.35 in order to incorporate the SPT automatic energy transfer ratio. When Modified California Sampler was used, a correction factor of 0.44 to 0.64 was also applied. N60 values were further corrected for gravel to avoid artificially high blow counts during the analyses due to spoon samples contact with gravel and cobbles, and the corrected values of (NG)60 (limited to a maximum value of 50 blows/300 mm) were used for design. The information from the SPT boreholes was then used to assess the subsurface conditions beneath the structures, as well as for a nearby bridge that was designed to cross over a creek. Since performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited due to the protected fish habitat, the investigation with regard to the bridge abutments was limited to two deep boreholes (B10-33 and B10-34) at the bridge location and two additional boreholes (B10-35 and B10- 36) located approximately 200 m upstream. The particular purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the development of underground conveying as applied to methods of working coal in the mines of Alberta. Historical A retrospective view of coal mining discloses a continuous effort, on the part of those interested, to substitute mechanical contrivances for hand labour. A patent for a coal-cutting machine was granted to Michael Menzies in 1761, at which time much of the transportation of coal underground was accomplished by means of sledges. Early forms of cutting machines attempted to duplicate the action of a miner's pick, and one hundred years lacer than Menzies? patent we still find this class of machine, driven by water power or compressed air, in use to a limited extent. A coal-cutter using the principle of a circular saw and worked by hand was exhibited in London in 1851, and from these crude beginnings the machines of today have been evolved. Transportation of coal underground has similarly been subject to considerable improvement. The above mentioned Michael Menzies took out a patent in 1750 covering the use of a self-acting incline plane, which is probably the earliest record of any system devised to lighten the load of the crammer or car-pusher of those days. In the year 1868 the Gillot & Copley machine was patented, this being a compressed-air-driven disc coal-cutter which proved highly successful. The chain cutters were a natural development from this type, and for a number of reasons they have been even more successful in the majority of cases.

An extensive experimental program was carried out to determine the variability of respirable dust samplers and to determine whether area dust sampling is feasible in coal mines. For sampler variability, it was found under laboratory conditions, that a single dust measurement could be as much as 0.30 mg/M3 from the true value at the 95% confidence level. Under actual underground mining operations, this difference could be as much as 0.52 mg/M3 in the 0 -5.0 mg/M3 range. The results from dust sampling on 175 production shifts involving over 2,500 on-man and area dust samples showed that area sampling is viable, but the field investigation did not establish necessarily where the best area locations were.

A flotation process was developed by the Bureau of Mines for separation of carbonate and phosphate minerals occurring in unaltered phosphate ores of the Phosphoria formation. The process involves depression of phosphate minerals with fluosilicic acid and flotation of carbonate minerals with fatty acid emulsions. In individual laboratory tests, selective removal of carbonates was achieved with phosphate recoveries ranging from 60 to 80 pct P205. In continuous-circuit testing, sizing and separate treatment of coarse and fine fractions was necessary to achieve 65-pct P205 recovery. Concentrate grade ranged from 26 to 33 pct P205. The flotation tailings containing primarily carbonate and phosphate minerals is a potential fertilizer material. When reacted with H3P04, concentrated superphosphate containing approximately 40 pct available P205 was obtained.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in a cooperative project with the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, and Homestake Mining Co., Lead, SD, conducted in situ monitoring and numerical modeling of rock masses supported with cable bolts in two mechanized, cut-and-fill stopes and a shaft pillar at the Homestake Mine. Extensometers were used to measure rock displacement, while cable bolt strain gauges were installed to measure loads on both conventional and birdcage cable bolt supports. These instruments provided an assessment of rock mass behavior during mining as well as essential data for verifying results from computer analyses. The numerical modeling program FLAC was used to analyze cable bolt patterns and supports. Results from the evaluation study indicated that cable bolt strain gauges and extensometers were effective instruments for monitoring the behavior of rock masses supported with cable bolts. Also, numerical modeling of the 4S-48N stope using the FIAC code provided displacement values comparable with measurements from field extensometers.

Between 1927 and 1957, sodium borate minerals were mined by underground methods in the Kramer District, Kern County, Calif. In 1957, surface mining methods were initiated, and during the next two or more decades it is probable that most of the production from the district will be obtained from open pits. However, part of this borate deposit is sufficiently deep that surface mining may not be economical and, hence, at some future date underground methods may again be employed. This report was prepared to document the underground mining methods employed in the district before 1957. The general geology of the district and the detailed geology of each of four mine sites are presented, together with a mineral and mechanical description of the ore and enveloping rock. The report also describes the stoping, extraction, pillar support, methods of artificial support, and other factors that affect the structural characteristics of these mines.

Molten Salt electrolytic processes offer unique opportunities to extract and refine metals where gaseous or metallothemlic reduction, hydrometallurgical extraction and aqueous electrolytic methods are thermodynamically constrained. Production of aluminum and magnesium by molten salt electrolysis are well known commercial processes. Several other reactive metals, such as lanthanides and actinides, as well as beryllium and calcium, make use of molten salt processing for extraction and refining. This presentation describes the science of molten salt chemistry and electrochemistry for winning and refining of several metals. In addition, recovery of metals from waste process salts by molten salt reduction as well as oxidation have been discussed. Material issues in design of molten salt reactors have been included. Various applications have been presented through case studies. Experimental data have been included to justify the suitability as well as limitations of these specific processes.

Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study. The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

This paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in conlmercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordaq4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. Analysis of Steeling Silver Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same ana,lysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry I1 in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. This bulletin contains a statement of certain results that will be embodied in a report describing investigations of the combustion of fuel made by the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in a specially constructed long furnace. The furnace forms part of the fuel-testing plant at Pittsburg, Pa., which was established and equipped by t.he Geological Survey, but passed under the control of the Bureau of Mines on July 1, 1910, when a t.ransfer of fuel-test.ing investjgations, authorized by act of Congress, became effective. The work discussed in this bulletin was done under the direction of the Geological Survey. The furnace was designed and built for an experimental study of the processes of combustiop, this study being part of a comprehensive plan for testing fuels to determine their heat value and the manner in which they can be used to best advantage. Although the main object of the researches made with the furnace by the Geological Survey was to examine critically the production of sensible heat by combustion along the path of the gases rising from the fuel, an interesting as well as important side problem developed in the study of the simultaneous dissipation of the heat through the walls and roof . of the furnace. Thus incidental data were collected on the temperature gradient through the walls at several places. These temperature data. (together with the heat conductivity of the material of the walls) formed the basis for calculating the heat dissipated through the walls. The object of this report is to present and discuss these temperature data. The discussion particularly concerns the air-space type of wall construction as compared with the solid brick wall or walls type, in which the air space is filled with some solid material of low heat conductivity. The conclusion of the authors, which perhaps will surprise some readers, is that, so far as loss of heat is concerned, a solid wall of brick or any ordinary material is preferable to a hollow wall of the same total thickness, especially if the air space in the hollow wall is near the furnace side. There is a general belief that l?ince air is a poor conductor of heat, air spaces built into the walls of a furnace will prevent or reduce heat dissipation through the wa.lls. Although there may be instances of furnace walls in which such construction reduces the rate of heat flow through them, yet as a rule the effect of the air space is just the opposite. While the heat does travel very slowly through the air by conduction, it leaps over the air space readily by radiation. Although this latter mode of heat propagation is common in nature, the laws governing it are not generall;y known and are seldom taken into consideration when furnace walls are being designed. It may be stated here that the quantity of heat passing through a. portion of a solid wall by conduction depends on the difference between the temperatures of the two planes limiting the portion of the wall. The quantity of heat that passes across the air space in the waH depends on the difference of the fourth powers of the absolute temperatUI: es of the surfaces inclosing Hie air space. It follows that, in case the heat. passes by conduction through the solid'portion of the wall, the loss remains approximately the same so long as the temperature of the two limiting planes remains constant, no matter what may be the temperature of the two planes. On the other hand, the heat passing across the air space by radiation increases rapidly with the temperatures of the inclosing surfaces, although the difference between these temperatures may remain constant. This feature will be shown by curves in the latter part of this paper and thoroughly discussed. The important point is that the air space, which is advantageous in the walls of a refrigerator because the temperatures are low, is objectionable in a furnace wall because the temperatures are high. It is customary to put air spaces in furnace walls between the firebrick linings and the common brick. Usually the fire-brick lining is only half a brick thick, which construction brings the air space too close to the furnace. The result is that the temperatures of the surfaces inclosing the air spaces are too high, and in consequence too much heat is radiated across the spaces. The heat passing through such walls would be much reduced if the air spaces were filled with brick, or, better, with some cheap nonconducting materials, such as ash, sand, mineral wool, etc. Even where the fire-brick lining is one brick thick (9 inches), the temperature in the furnace may be high enough to raise the temperatures of the air-space surfaces so much that the heat radiated across the space will amount to more than would the heat conducted through a filling, were the filling only common brick. This last statement is amply justified by the data here presented.

The level of impact and mitigating measures that are forecast in an environmental assessment (EA) for a new, or significantly modified, metallurgical processing facility or mine are taking on increasing importance during the subsequent life of the facility. The basic premise is that one is authorized to operate within the envelope defined by the approved EA. Operations inevitably change as they develop and mature, and at some point, one is faced with the prospect of re-doing the original EA work. This can lead to significant development delays. Cameco Corporation (Cameco) has played a major role in developing the northern Saskatchewan uranium mining industry over the past decade. Through the EA process, the company has developed ideas on what works well in generating approvals that give the operator some future flexibility. Early introduction of concepts for potentially different mining and processing methods, as well as contingency plans if things do not work out exactly as predicted in the original EA, can make subsequent regulatory approval for change a more efficient process. One must also preserve the principles of open consultation upon which the EA process was originally based. As such, involvement and support from local communities and other stakeholders is required to ensure the long-term success of the EA process.

This report documents laboratory and in-mine analyses of diesel exhaust pollutants carried out to assess the fate of potentially reactive species in the mine environment. Specifically, the concentration of stable compounds including carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and potentially reactive compounds including nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, aldehydes, formaldehyde, acrolein, formic acid, odorants, particulates, soluble sulfates, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. The concentration and mass emission rates of these compounds were measured in the laboratory under three engine speed and load conditions and with three exhaust control conditions, i.e., none, catalyst, water conditioner. Once calibrated, the engine was installed in the Bureau of Mines Safety Research Coal Mine and the concentration of exhaust pollutants measured at several distances downstream (inby) of the engine. Laboratory results confirm the relatively small effect of exhaust control devices on most pollutants under engine conditions of low speed and load. At higher engine speed and load, the catalyst is more effective in controlling many pollutants. The in-mine data indicates that during residence times, which are typical for miner/exhaust contact, most diesel exhaust pollutants do not decrease in concentration. The obvious exceptions are nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and formaldehyde. The concentration of these pollutants is reduced by up to 75 percent in five minutes. The lack of increase in levels of obvious reaction products indicates that surface loss may be a major sink for these pollutants.

Mining operations take a tremendous toll on equipment, operating in difficult conditions day after day. Owners and operators cannot make the job any easier, but they can give their equipment an advantage. Equipment life may be extended through preventive maintenance and the proper application of quality lubricants. This means lubricants that are made to last longer and stand up better to the punishment mining equipment must endure. There are several practices to consider as part of a successful preventive maintenance program. A good place to start is to review original equipment manufacturer recommendations about servicing and maintenance intervals for each part of the equipment, especially the engine. If these recommendations have not been followed, owners and operators must begin periodic service work on equipment to help minimize equipment down-time and extend engine life.
