The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, investigated recovery of concentrates containing tin, tantalum, and niobium from the Kougarok deposit on the Seward Peninsula, AK. To date, 25 million lb of tin has been delineated in occurrences containing 0.36 to 1.32 pct Sn, and the resource potential is estimated to be as high as 25 million short tons at average grades of 0.75 pct Sn, 0.025 pct Ta, and 0,025 pct Nb. Deslimed ore was concentrated to 54 pct Sn, 0.3 pct Ta, and 0.3 pct Nb, with recoveries of 74 pct Sn and 44 pct Ta/Nb using a Humphrey's* spiral followed by a Deister shaking table. Tin values in the slimes were upgraded to a 5-pct-Sn concentrate using a Bartles-Mozley separator followed by flotation. The 5- pct-Sn was further upgraded by fuming to give a concentrate containing approximately 60 pct Sn. The recovery of the two products combined was 80 pct Sn and 46 pct Ta/Nb, A flowsheet with mill-design parameters resulted from the metallurgical testing. An economic analysis was made based on the proposed process.

This Bureau of Mines publication considers the feasibility of augmenting the present transportation system by pipelining taconite concentrates from the Mesabi Range to the Chicago area. The cost of pipelining in the hypothetical system using water as the carrier is estimated to be between $3.66 and $3.97 per long ton. This appears competitive with the 1970 rail-vessel transportation rate of $4.08 even after allowing a few cents per ton for barging from the terminal to existing furnaces. Political obstacles requiring solution before such a pipeline could be built and the feasibility of using crude oil as the carrier fluid are also discussed. FORTRAN routines used to calculate unit transportation cost for specific estimated values of cost items and for a range of values are presented. The effect of deviations from estimated values of cost items on the total unit transportation cost are shown graphically.

In March 2003, Rio Tinto Coal AustraliaÆs (RTCA) new Hail Creek open cut coal mine commenced operations in the Bowen Basin. Hail Creek is a two-seam strip mining operation utilising two 90 m3 draglines and a fleet of excavators and trucks to remove the overburden. All overburden at Hail Creek is blasted prior to excavation. The mine conducts its own drill and blast operations while engaging Dyno Nobel for the provision of explosives supply and loading truck (bulk explosives vehicle û BEV) services. This arrangement was favoured over outsourcing the entire blasting function to a contractor. Subsequent to a value engineering review, the mine set about developing and implementing a blasting operation that did not rely on the need to store bulk quantities of ammonium nitrate on site. There were advantages identified in doing this, in particular the reduction of capital expenditure required and reduced exposure to a number of recently introduced security requirements. This approach also makes sense operationally. The establishment of reload facilities for the BEV close to the blasting location, where turnaround times are kept to a minimum, increases the productivity of the BEV. For this strategy to be successful the logistics of ammonium nitrate supply into the blasting operations has to be well planned and thoroughly executed. This means a robust planning and forecasting arrangement needs to be established with the supplier and transporters of the ammonium nitrate. To date, 80 million bcm of overburden has been blasted at Hail Creek and each year the quantity of overburden requiring blasting is increasing. The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a study: evaluating the effectiveness to date of the strategy to conduct blasting operations without ammonium nitrate storage on site, and identifying whether there is a limit to which this strategy can operate after which the introduction of bulk ammonium nitrate storage facilities are necessary.

Efficient recovery of precious metals from process solutions is essential for improving process economics. Traditionally, precious metals are relatively effectively recovered from waste streams via precipitation or cementation. However, these approaches have a number of drawbacks, including poor water balance, creation of environmentally unfriendly waste streams, and losses of precious metals. Ion exchange technology is an alternative for the recovery of precious metals from waste or low-grade streams. This technology allows the recovery of the precious metals to extremely low levels (micrograms per litre) with relatively high upgrade ratios from the solution onto the resin without major water balance concerns, while the impact on the environment could be minimized or avoided. Research was conducted on the recovery of platinum group metals and gold from different low-grade and waste streams from one of the precious metals refineries in South Africa by means of ion exchange. Various functionalities and matrices (granular and fibrous) of ion exchange materials were evaluated. The results from these studies indicated that in some cases ion exchange could be very effective for the recovery of precious metals, and that the PGM concentration could be reduced to < 1 mg/L. The upgrading ratios of the various PGMs onto the specific fibres were relatively high for the specific streams evaluated, which might in some cases justify incineration of the loaded material instead of stripping and recycling the adsorbent. The cost of direct incineration for one of the waste streams tested would be less than 1% of the value of the PGMs recovered. However, the adsorbent has to be carefully selected and the process design optimized for each specific stream.

"The United States hat large reserves of titaniferous iron ores that are a potential future source of both iron and titanium. Although it is not now economically feasible to recover iron and titanium metals from these ores, they may become important in times of stress and, in some instances, already have served as a source of pigment-quality titania.The iron- and titanium-bearing constituents of the ores considered in this report are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, and chemical (or smelting) procedures must be employed. It is im¬portant, therefore, that information be available concerting their reactivities. The most important titanium-bearing constituent is ilmenite (FeTiO3), the thermodynamic properties of which were discussed in a previous publication.3/ The results of thermodynamic studies showed that both hydrogen and carbon monoxide are relatively ineffective reducing agents for the iron in limonite. On the other hand, carbon theoretically is effective at tempera¬tures above 8510C., at which. point the combined equilibrium pressures of CO and CO2 from the reactionsFeTiO3 + C = Fe+ TiO + COand200 = C+ CO2reach 1 atmosphere.This report gives results of small-scale tests of selective reduction by carbon of the iron in titaniferous iron ores, both with and without addition of sodium carbonate. It is shown that the bulk of the iron may be reduced and separated without serious reduction or loss of titanium. Three Wyoming ores, Iron Mountain, Shanton, and Taylor, wore studied. The principal factors investigated were temperature, time, carbon:ore ratio, particle size, and sodium carbon ore ratio.Two methods of investigation were employed. In the first, intimate mixtures of ore and carbon were roasted and the reduced iron and titanium evaluated by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid and analyzing the leach solution (and, in some instances, the dried residues).Twenty grams of ore were mixed thoroughly with carbon and tamped into an alundum thimble having a loosely fitting cover. The thimble and contents were placed in a test-tube end porcelain tube and heated to the desired temperature in a Globar tube furnace. The open end of the porcelain tube was connected to a bubbler containing sulfuric acid, in a manner that permitted complete shut-off of the tube when desired. This allowed removal of the tube from the furnace at the end of the roast period without exposure of the contents to the atmosphere."

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.

Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company is currently mining in four pit areas; Live Oak, Red Hill, Thornton and Joe Bush Extension, near Globe, Arizona. Small satellite orebodies lying outside the main pits have been mined out in a series of small open pits. Major slope instability has affected production in every pit. Some consequences of the instability have been; (1) Serious interruption of mining plans, which resulted in deferred ore production, lost ore, reduced mining rates and increased stripping requirements. (2) Forced replacement of crushing facilities. (3) Serious effects on other production facilities. The introduction of a slope stability monitoring and control function as an integral part of mine planning has been successful in reducing the impact of these failures and will eventually result in economic pit design based on probabilistic slope analysis. This case history presents a brief review of the problems associated with slope instability at Inspiration&apos;s mines followed by a more detailed report on one specific failure area in the Thornton pit where the use of horizontal drain holes for slope stabilization appears to be successful. Relationships between slope movement rate, rainfall, and mining activity are shown.

Rock mass discontinuities play a significant role in evaluating the stability of rock slopes. It is necessary to collect and analyze these discontinuities to fully understand the mechanical and deformational behaviors of rock masses. Based on the digital images of some slope faces, this paper proposes a framework based on machine learning for detecting and extracting discontinuities. First, digital images and photo poses are combined, the original scene is reconstructed, and 3D point cloud data are obtained. All captured point clouds can be mapped with each image by the direct linear transformation algorithm. Next, the detection machine learning algorithm is used to segment rock mass discontinuities on 2D digital images. Finally, based on the mapping relationship, the 2D digital images that were segmented are transformed into 3D point cloud data. The geometric parameters of the corresponding discontinuities can be extracted by the DBSCAN and the Skmeans algorithm and the characterization of specific rules. The proposed framework was evaluated utilizing a quantity of slope digital images in the Yebatan hydropower under construction, located in Sichuan Province, China, as a case study. The results illustrate that most deviations are less than 10° for the dip direction and dip angle, which verifies the reliability of the proposed framework and maintains acceptable measurement accuracy.

"In 2001, a pile trial site was established at Limelette in Belgium consisting of 25 displacement screw piles and 5 driven pre-cast piles. Interested parties were invited to participate in a pile prediction event, whereby they would submit predicted static load test behaviour in the form of load settlement plots. These predictions could be based on soil investigation results supplied by the organizers, or dynamic load test measurements.Following the submission deadline, the organisers released the results of static load tests for comparison.Of all the six participants, including Statnamic, the SIMBAT method was independently accredited with achieving the best predictions.This paper examines at the differences between SIMBAT and other systems, and presents the correlations from the Limelette trial.INTRODUCTIONThe Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) initiated an ambitious research programme involving the construction and testing of some 60 trial piles spread between two sites, a clay site at Sint Kateline Waver and a sandy site at the BBRI headquarters at Limelette. The project was financed largely by the Belgian Ministry of Economic affairs. (ref 1.) This paper refers only to the second site.At Limelette, six different types of displacement pile were installed: one driven pre-cast and five cast in place screw piles - Atlas, DeWaal, Fundex, Olivier and Omega. Two series of laboratory flotation tests were carried out to study the treatment of Faraday ore by two-stage flotation. First the acid-consumers and then the uranium minerals were floated. On ore ground in the Faraday mill grinding circuit, and using Faraday mill water in the flotation step, a recovery in the flotation concentrate of from 91 to 93 percent of the uranium was obtained in 45 to 50 per cent of the weight at a grade of 0.24 per cent U30s. The saving of acid in leaching the uranium-bearing flotation concentrate, as compared to leaching the whole ore, ranged from 30 to 46 per cent. The average over-all extraction resulting from flotation and leaching of the flotation concentrate was 88.1 per cent. The best collector for the acid-consumers was sodium oleate. Acintol F A-1 emulsion was the best collector for the uranium minerals, and, in the uranium flotation step, an acid pH in the slurry was found to be necessary. The reagent costs were estimated to be 22 to 26 cents per ton of ore.

During a study of the Badger-Peacock area from October 1950 to June 1953, the Federal Geological Survey and the Federal Bureau of Mines completed nearly 98 miles of resistivity profiling and drilled 96 test holes aggregating 17,628 feet of bore, In addition, seismic profile measurements were made along 8 traverse lines for an aggregate length of about 16,600 feet. The geophysical surveys were conducted by the Geophysics Branch of the Geological Survey; the drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines. Electrical-resistivity measurements disclosed 21 low-resistivity anomalies and 1 high-resistivity anomaly. Correlation of the resistivity data with the geological information revealed by the drilling disclosed that the low-resistivity anomalies indicated either slumped shale deposits in limestone sinks or undisturbed deposits of shale lying in erosional depressions in the limestone. The high-resistivity anomaly indicated hard, undisturbed limestone at or near the surface.

In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany&apos;s Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.

"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The Mining Law of 1910 , with amendments of 1914 and 1928 , is at present in force in the Dominican Republic . The first and basic mining law of the Republic was passed in 1876 , and although numerous changes and amendments have been made from time to time , the new laws and amendments thereto have not changed the original or basic law materially . However , these enactments have materially changed the legal methods governing the exploitation of the mineral resources of this country and have added new regulations and requirements to those concerning certain specific minerals , etc. The original or basic law still exists as it was first promulgated to protect the rights of the Dominican Republic itself , the rights of the landowner , and the rights of prospectors in general . The Mining Law of 1876 remained in force , without amendment , until it was superseded by the law of May 25 , 1904 , an enactment modeled after the Mexican mining law and designed especially to encourage the investment of

Transportation charges for mineral commodity movements in western Oregon and western Washington were determined mainly by a stratified random sample canvass of producers. Total 1965 mineral production value for this area was $53.3 million; the cost or charge to move this production from the mine to the consumer or to the point of consumption was determined to be an additional $38.7 million. Thirty seven companies were contacted as a sample out of a total population of 349; the statistically expanded sample production value deviated 3.6 percent from that obtained by the Bureau&apos;s annual canvass. The agreement between the sample results and the canvass totals demonstrated the effectiveness of the sampling method for obtaining data with a predesigned level of accuracy. For comparison, the north-central Idaho and western Montana area was studied, A random sample experiment was designed, but because of the dominance of a few major companies, a random sample technique would have required more visits to producers than if only the larger firms were contacted. Eighty-four percent of the 1966 mineral value ($198.6 million) was accounted for by interviewing 27 firms out of a total population of 199. Total transportation costs or charges for the area were $26.7 million. The significant difference observed between the relationship of minerals production value and transport charges between the two areas investigated can be attributed to the difference in the minerals produced. The western Oregon and western Washington region is a nonmetals-producing area as opposed to the predominance of metals production in the Idaho-Montana region.

Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

STATISTICS of injuries in the quarrying and related industries in the United States first became available when the Bureau of Mines collected reports from the operating companies for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1952, is the 33d publication containing statistical data on injuries at quarries and related plants, and it is the first to be published since 1944. The last publication was Bulletin 458, Quarry Accidents in the United States during the Calendar Year 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1942-51 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries at quarries, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to supply such data, and the reports received from operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau&apos;s requests for information. Although the figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, every effort has been exerted to make them so, and the figures given are believed to be thoroughly representative of the hazards to which quarry workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are com¬parable as between States -which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or to comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

The hydrogen desorption kinetics of pure and Nb-doped magnesium hydride film samples was investigated by using a Sievert-type apparatus. The overall activation energy and the reaction order controlling desorption are (141±5) kJ mol-1H and n 4 for Mg hydride and (51±5) kJ mol-1H and n 1 for Nb-doped (5% at) Mg hydride indicating that, in the doped sample, hydrogen desorption is controlled by the H migration in transformed h-Mg layers. Structural analysis performed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) show that the catalytic effect of the Nb dopant is connected with the formation of NbH0.89 nanoclusters dispersed in the Mg hydride matrix. It is suggested that the catalysis process is also connected to the presence of Mg-Nb hydride interfaces where the transfer of H atoms preferentially occurs by connecting h-Mg grains and by the role of the MgH2-NbH0.89 interface as preferential site for the dissociation of the hydride phase.
