Stress analysis programs such as MULSIM/NL, LAMODEL, MinSim 2000, and EXAMINE TAB are used in the mining industry to analyze stresses and displacements in coal mines, platinum mines, gold reefs, and tabular-type deposits. These relatively simple numerical models can efficiently simulate yielding and failure of a rock mass near a mine opening and subsequent stress transfer. The main input parameters for these models are a family of nonlinear stress-strain curves for the in-seam material. For many applications of these models, such as in coal mining, extensive field measurements and observations exist from which to estimate these stress-strain curves and calibrate the numerical models; however, such measurements are lacking for other types of mines. A three-step method is presented to determine nonlinear stress¬strain curves for boundary-element (BE) programs used in many mining applications. The method requires a suite of laboratory¬scale strength tests at various confining pressures. Note that this analysis uses laboratory-measured strength and modulus properties of alluvium. The dependency of the mechanical properties of alluvium on scale has not been established, although more tests are being planned. However, it is believed that the relative comparisons performed are valuable regardless of scale effects. First, the FLAC2D computer program is used to model the laboratory tests and determine cohesion (c) and friction angle (0) for a Mohr-Coulomb material model. Second, another FLAC2D model uses the c and 0 values to calculate vertical stress and strain around a single opening in the rock mass. This model calculates the stress-strain path of points at various distances from the opening boundary. Finally, based on these stress-strain paths, the stress-strain curves needed for a BE analysis are derived. This three-step method was demonstrated in a large, flat-lying underground test facility in very weak rock. The BE analyses agreed well with observations of failure at the test facility and provided a basis for evaluating the behavior of alternative layouts.

The Waterview Tunnel comprises twin 2.4 km long 13.1 m internal diameter three lane road tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45 km long, 6.24 m internal diameter twin rail tunnel underneath Auckland’s city center. This paper presents an overview of the tunnel geometry, segmental lining congurations, geometric constraints, performance criteria and functional reuirements for the large diameter Waterview Tunnels and smaller diameter CRL tunnels. Other key aspects, which include sustainability, innovations, construction performance and practical aspects are discussed and compared. Lessons learnt from these mega tunnelling projects are also presented.

Kumtor Gold Company (KGC) currently operates the 500,000 tonnes per day Kumtor open pit gold mine located in the Issyk-Kul region of the Kyrgyz Republic at an elevation of more than 4,000 m. To supplement the open-pit mill feed with high grade underground ore from outside the current pit limits, KGC started pre-production design and development of the underground mine for the SB ore zone in late 2006. The initial phase of pre-production development consists of exploration and haulage declines which, upon completion, will provide ventilation and access to the underground mine. Design and construction of these declines presented many challenges to the project team considering the mines unique location at high altitude, the limited experience with Western underground mining techniques in the Kyrgyz Republic, and the impact of the nearby Davydov glacier and resultant ground conditions. Completion of the exploration and haulage declines was undertaken jointly by KGC and mine contractor, J.S. Redpath Limited (Redpath). The initial phase of development including several ground falls provided detailed information on geotechnical ground types and conditions that were useful in determining the overall mine design and methodology for production. This paper covers the various aspects of the design and construction process of developing the declines under the glacier, minimizing the likelihood of further ground falls, and the journey of both KGC and Redpath which led to the successful breakthrough between the declines on 01 July 2012.

Safe operation and system integrity are two important properties of a mine hoist electrical system. Previous methods used to assess these systems, though rare, have involved extensive downtime and required skilled personnel. The recommended design considerations presented in this report are for a proposed automated system that will perform real time measurements, calculations, and recordings of pertinent performance data. Included are equipment installation and test procedures to be used with the system. The report also contains descriptions of the hoist performance criteria, and how they are to be collected.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds in Harrison County, W. Va. It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for the production of metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 6.5 million tons of coal was produced in Harrison County, W. Va., in 1958, of which over 3.7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in seven preparation plants. All of the coal cleaned was from the Pittsburgh bed. It has been estimated that more than 1,816 million tons of coal remains in the county in beds 12 inches or more thick. The Pittsburgh and Redstone beds were selected by the Bureau for a study based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were selected following a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Six samples were collected from the Pittsburgh bed, and three samples came from the Redstone bed, Float-and-sink tests of the samples collected from the Pittsburgh and Redstone beds showed that neither coal could be upgraded to a metallurgical fuel under the standards set up for this study, even after intensive preparation. Finer crushing of the samples moderately increased the yields and slightly reduced both the ash and the sulfur contents in the 1.30-specific-gravity float fractions. Finer crushing slightly decreased the yields in the 1.58-specific-gravity float fractions, whereas it reduced the sulfur content 0.11 percent for the Redstone sample and 0.46 for the Pittsburgh sample.

"The casthouse floor has always been one of the most dangerous working places on a blast furnace or a ferro-alloy/nonferrous furnace. Apart from working in an atmosphere including toxic gases, fumes, and dust, the workers have to perform hard and heavy manual work close to runners and ladles filled with hot liquid metal and slag.Before the invention and installation of tapping equipment the tap-holes were opened and closed manually. Opening was done by means of steel bars and sledgehammers, whereas the tap-hole was closed by repeatedly ramming small amounts of clay or refractory material into the tap-hole, again with the help of long, heavy bars. In addition, on blast furnaces the blast had to be stopped, since it was impossible to close the tap-hole properly against the blast furnace pressure. This stoppage of the blast resulted in regular losses of production. Around 1900 a major change in technology occurred. Samuel W. Vaughen, superintendent of the blast furnace department of the Cambria Iron company at Johnstown, Pennsylvania (USA), invented the first clay gun in 1895 (Wiley, 1896) (Figure 1)."

The Bureau of Mines investigated preheating of continuously fed, fragmented ferrous scrap charges by furnace offgases and utilizing substitutes for imported fluorspar to condition electric steelmaking slags. Three types of continuous scrap charging procedures were investigated to determine electrical energy consumption in a I-st (short ton) electric arc furnace. Cold and preheated scrap charges were continuously fed at rates averaging 37.5 and 43.7lb/min, respectively. The feed rate varied appreciably from test to test owing to hangup of the scrap in the charge bin. Approximately 7 pct less electrical energy was consumed in melting scrap preheated to 8400 to 1,1100 F by furnace off-gases than in melting cold scrap. Overall energy consumptions were 888 kW'h/st for cold scrap, 829 kW'h/st for preheated scrap" and 637 kW'h/st for conventional backcharged scrap. Stack gases from scrap preheating averaged 1200 F and a flow rate of 1,615 scfm compared with 2200 F and 1,302 sefm for cold-charged scrap. Slag conditioners tested included synthetic fluorspar, boric acid, hydroboracite, used aluminum potlining wastes and aluminum anode tailing wastes, and Sorelflux B. The boron-containing conditioners fluidized the slags the best, followed in order by the conditioners containing fluorine and titanium.

Being a rapidly developing country, India is undergoing a massive infrastructure phase change remarkably. The construction industry is already set to boom, but the time and space constraints necessitate the employment of heavy plants and machinery to take the foundations deeper than ever. Operating such machinery on soft or poor ground conditions without a good working platform leads to uncertainties with massive loss of men and machinery. Plenty of such cases can be observed on construction sites across the globe. Unfortunately, forming a temporary working platform is given least to no importance in the construction industry, particularly ground engineering. This glitch can only be addressed through standard guidelines or codal recommendations on designing and implementing temporary working platforms issued by regulatory bodies. The present paper highlights the importance of providing the working platform, existing design method for working platforms such as TWf 2019:02 of Temporary Works forum, Building Research Establishment BR470 and a brief discussion on the design and construction of the geosynthetic reinforced working platform with a case study is also included. A pitch has been made on the importance of Indian codes/guidelines for the design and construction of temporary working platforms. These guidelines will ensure the safety of the men and heavy machinery and, in addition, increase the productivity of foundation construction irrespective of weather conditions and also become part of the regular construction scope.

Every few weeks United States newspapers of 25 or 30 years age ran scare-heads telling of some mine disaster, which was a first-page attraction for a day or two and then was forgotton until another disaster occurred a few weeks later. Interspersed with these disasters were the so-called sniping mine accidents, causing the death of one or two mine workers. The summation of all types of mine fatalities usually exceeded 3,000 a year. In the period 1906-10, inclusive, there wore 84 major explosion disasters (or about 17 per year) in united States coal mines; the fatalities resulting from those disasters numbered 2,388 for the 5-year period. These frightful catastrophies helped to cause the total number of fatalities in our coal mines for the 5 years (including the fatalities from major explosions) to reach the enormous total of 13,288, an average of 2,658 per year. In addition, some hundreds of other typos of mining accidents swelled the annual fatality list to upwards of 3,000. This admittedly deplorable condition created so much Nation-wide comment that Congress was impressed with the necessity of having something done by the Federal Government with a view to trying to halt at least sonic of the excessive loss of life in our mines; in consequence, the Bureau of Mines was created and began to function in July 1910.

"In all electrical beneficiation methods, the difference in electro-physical properties of the contributed mineral particles, essentially frictional charge, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant properties are exploited to achieve separation. The composition of the raw material determines what kind of either corona charging, conductive induction, or triboelectric separation method should be employed. The process is versatile and is influenced by different parameters related to mineral characteristics, surrounding ambient conditions and electrical and mechanical attributions of the separating device. Electrical separation is surface based beneficiation method which is mainly affected by the surface and surface changes of the minerals. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the electrophysical properties of the minerals can be changed/modified. During electrical/electrostatic separation process, both charge magnitude and its polarity that developed on the particles and therefore, their electrical beneficiation potential is essentially defined by surface phenomena. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the main electro-physical parameters can be changed/modified with applied surface treatment/pretreatment methods to promote separation. Surface treatment of minerals is carried out by different means, including chemical conditioning, irradiation, thermal treatment, etc. This paper discusses and analyze the electrical separation process, electrophysical properties of the minerals with special focus on the effect of surface pretreatment/treatment methods to affect electrical beneficiation potential of the minerals. The surface treatment methods vary in a wide range from simple surface cleaning to more complicated chemical conditioning and doping. The knowledge of the solid-state physics and chemistry leads to improve the beneficiation potential of different mineral systems by choosing suitable treatment method(s). Despite the complexity and multiplicity of the charging mechanisms, difficulties in separating fines it seems to be beneficial make our attempts to further investigate and develop the process as dry, low cost beneficiation process, especially nowadays when environmental concerns, as well as energy and water consumptions are main concerns for mining industry."

Mine worker exposure to respirable coal dust and silica dust can result in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis which are occupational respiratory diseases that have no cure and are ultimately fatal. In 2021 the Mine Safety and Health Administration reported just over 11,000 operating metal/nonmetal mines with the potential for silica dust exposure for just under 200,000 miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts respirable coal and silica dust research associated with mining through its Office of Mine Safety and Health Research. NIOSH respirable coal and silica dust research began under the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), which initially examined silica dust, progressing to include coal dust, with a stronger focus after 1969 with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. A review of extramural research to develop real-time respirable silica dust monitor is presented along with a brief history of silica dust regulation.

Dry air classification is a well-known technique used for decades in the cement industry to separate material in the size range of 0.01-1.0 mm. Additionally, in corresponding dry grinding circuits with effective machines such as High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), the energy consumption can be reduced compared to wet applications. These dry systems are not state of the art in minerals processing plants, but first prototypes have been installed and an increasing number of projects are starting to evaluate this option. One challenge in this field is the mineral composition of ores, which have, by far, a higher variety in density and size than those of cement. High density particles such as iron- containing ones have higher settling rates than low density silica particles of the same size. The main question to answer in this paper is how to evaluate this effect, so a quantitative method using Mineral Liberation Analyses was developed to calculate two-dimensional partition curves. Additional statistical analyses allow for isolation and quantifying the interaction of density and size, enabling engineers to consider this effect for the sizing of process plants. The Bureau of Mines drilled and sampled the more important magnesite deposits in the Currant Creek Mining District, White Pine County, Nev. The properties of the Ala-Mar Magnesium Co., Inc., and the Nevada Magnesite Co. were examined in August 1942 by D. W. Butner, engineer of the Bureau of Mines, to determine the advisability of investigating the deposits under the strategic minerals program. Development involving diamond drilling, trenching, and sampling was started September 1, 1942, and was completed in the latter part of November 1942. The deposits are on unsurveyed public land in T. 12N., B. 59 E., M.D.B.&M., in an area of high relief ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet in altitude. Both properties are situated northwest of the Tonopah-Ely Highway, U.S. Highway 6, from which a dirt road extends about 4.6 miles northwesterly, about 35 miles southwest of Ely, to the Ala-Mar property, and another dirt road extends about 10 miles westerly, about 26 miles southwest of Ely, to the Nevada Magnesite property. The magnesite occurs as irregular nodules, veins, and lenses in a bedded calcareous tuff formation, which overlies a group of volcanic rocks, and which is capped by remnants of rhyolite flows.

To facilitate effective land reclamation and comply with existing state regulations, surface coal mine operators have in recent years adopted new mining techniques and equipment utilization for steep-terrain mining. In contrast to direct spoiling with draglines or shovels, these new mining methods require some form of overburden haulage from the excavation face to the point of reclamation. Although current mining methodologies such as Block-Cut, Modified Block-Cut, and Mountaintop Removal with Head-of-Hollow Fills have proven effective in achieving reclamation objectives, some production problems have resulted from pit congestion and excessive equipment delays. Recognizing this problem, the United States Bureau of Mines contracted Skelly and Loy to design innovative mining concepts utilizing conveyor haulage in place of trucks, loaders, dozers and scrapers. Project objectives required definition of current bottlenecks and development of mining systems to: alleviate bottlenecks; increase production potential; facilitate additional resource recovery; enhance reclamation; reduce safety hazards; and improve mining economics. Successful completion of project goals within a four year program involves systematic implementation of the following separate work phases: 1) Develop Concepts for Block-Cut Mining Systems; 2) Determine the Economic and Technical Feasibility of Concepts; 3) Prepare Detailed Design and Specifications of Concepts; and 4) Prepare Specifications for Conducting Field Tests of the Most Promising Concepts. At the time of this publication, Phases 1 and 2 are finalized with Phase 3 efforts well underway.

"Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. The Route 6 /10 10 Interchange Design/Build project, located in Providence, Rhode Island, involves the design and construction of five (5) new elevated bridge structures to replace and reconfigure the existing interchange and to provide a link between Route 10 northbound and Route 6 westbound. Due to site logistics, headroom restrictions, and depth to bedrock, 50 ton drilled micropiles installed in the deep medium dense sand strata were initially proposed as the deep foundation solution. Post project award, Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) performed various analyses and developed an alternate driven pile solution using steel Tapertube. The results of these analyses indicated that driven steel taper tube and steel pipe piles could develop greater capacities than the drilled micropiles in the granular soil layer, thereby reducing the number of foundation elements, decreasing construction schedule and providing a more cost effective foundation alternative. A comprehensive driven pile load test program was subsequently executed by GTR and the Design Build Team led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, to assess the performance of Tapertube and steel pipe piles, including pile drivability, load-deformation characteristics under static and dynamic loading, and to develop site-specific design parameters in two (2) distinct test areas. The test pile program included dynamic, static compression, tension and lateral load tests on each test pile. Load test measurements were automated with embedded Vibrating Wire Strain Gages (VWSG) to measure load transfer with depth. The execution and results of the successful pile load test program are presented and offer unique case study and valuable data for the use of Tapertube piles on deep foundation projects in the New England region INTRODUCTION The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Route 6 / Route 10 Interchange is located west of downtown Providence. Originally constructed in the 1950’s as a highway bypass around the historic Olneyville neighborhood, the interchange consists of a series of nine (9) bridges and ramps that serve as a vital east-west link between Interstate 295, 95 and 195. Based on recent bridge rating assessments, seven of the nine bridge structures are rated “structurally deficient”. With many bridge structures shored with temporary supports as many as 15 years ago, the interchange is in critical need of replacement. In 2018, RIDOT awarded the Route 6/10 Reconstruction Design-Build Project to 6/10 Constructors, Joint Venture. Led by Barletta Heavy Division of Canton, Massachusetts, the Design Build team includes O&G Industries, DW White Construction, Aetna Bridge Co. and AECOM. The scope of work includes the replacement of the bridges and ramps, and will provide direct access from Route 10 northbound to Route 6 westbound. Valued at over $400M (US), this is currently the largest project awarded in RIDOT history.

Mine waste rock is unavoidable in the recovery of ore by open pit mining methods. Effective management of waste rock movement covers the removal and placement of the waste rock, generally in a surface dump in the most cost-effective way while satisfying the long-term environmental expectations. Since the 1960s, there has been significant research carried out into planning of ore movement from open pit mines such that the overall net present value (NPV) of the project can be maximised. Currently, several software packages are available to achieve this task as a common practice within the mining industry. However, planning of mine waste rock movement is still achieved manually, as the available software does not consider optimal waste rock movement and dump design. This paper describes a tool to optimise waste rock placement, which minimises the haulage cost while creating environmentally friendly waste rock dumps through selective placement and encapsulation of the reactive waste rock in the dump. The embedded methodology in this tool has been developed based on the mixed integer programming (MIP) modelling technique to optimise the waste rock movement. The methodology provides an easily-manipulated and fully-automatic tool for professionals to complete waste rock dump scheduling in four main steps: data input, model construction, model computation and solution retrieval. The application of the new tool into a real case project in this paper shows that it can determine economically and environmentally optimised waste rock dump schedules in an acceptable time frame.CITATION:Fu, Z, Li, Y, Topal, E and Williams, D J, 2015.
