This report describes development and application by the Bureau of Mines of techniques and instruments for using radioactive inert-gas tracers to determine flow paths through petroleum reservoirs that have natural fracture systems and for which water injection has been selected as the stimulative production method. A field test was made to prove the techniques and evaluate instrumentation. The feasibility of applying the techniques and instruments to the solution of reservoir problems in other stimulative methods of production also is discussed. Oil commonly is displaced from sandstone host rocks by the action of a driving force that causes the oil to move through interstices of the rock and into production wells. In addition to the requirements of oil being trapped within the sand pores and the presence of an effective displacement mechanism, the rock itself must have adequate permeability to permit flow of oil and other fluids.

A cooperative study was conducted between Signal Peak Energy and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the behavior of a pre-driven recovery room under less than 200 ft of cover. The design of the support systems for a pre-driven recovery room must provide control of the roof and ribs during the changing stress environment experienced throughout the final advance of the longwall into the recovery room. It must also provide a stable area where mine personnel are not exposed to undue hazards during shield recovery operations. This recovery room was constructed in two phases; each phase mined a 21-ft-wide room that was heavily supported, and subsequently fully backfilled with 800-psi, cellular concrete. Instrumentation to monitor the recovery room performance included borehole pressure cells (BPCs) placed in the head gate and tailgate pillars, at four locations across the longwall panel, in the fill material, and in the first row of outby pillars near the center of the panel. Four roof-to-floor convergence sensors were installed in the back fill material and a vertical, multipoint borehole extensometer (MPBX) measured the displacement of the strata above the recovery room. Surface surveys were conducted to measure MPBX collar movement. The data show that the front abutment load was transferred onto the recovery room backfill and the out by pillars as the longwall panel was extracted. As the longwall approached the recovery area, the fender and shields yielded, but the backfill provided enough support to keep the room stable as the longwall advanced to its final position. The system worked as planned and the face was recovered in record time.

La Bolivie possède tout pour réussir. Son vaste territoire de plus d'un million de km2 et qui occupe une position stratégique au coeur du continent sud-américain recèle des ressources naturelles (forêts, minéraux, gaz naturel, etc) variées et abondantes. Elle a une frontière avec pas moins de 5 pays dont le géant que constitue le Brésil ainsi qu'avec l'Argentine, l'autre puissance régionale. Pourtant, malgré tous ces atouts, la Bolivie demeure l'un des pays les plus pauvres du continent. Ce paradoxe n'est nulle part mieux reflété que dans le secteur minier. Celui-ci fait face à une situation de crise en dépit d'une tradition minière de plus de quatre siècles et d'un potentiel géologique indiscutable ayant conduit à la découverte et à l'exploitation de fabuleux gisements d'argent et d'étain. Les habitants des districts miniers vivent dans des conditions de pauvreté extrême et les indicateurs de développement humain de ces régions sont parmi les plus bas en Amérique du Sud. La Bolivie réussit difficilement à attirer les compagnies minières alors que, chez les voisins, et particulièrement en Argentine, qui n'a pas de tradition minière, les investissements miniers majeurs affluent. Dans cette conférence, nous chercherons à expliquer les causes de cette situation et proposerons des solutions possibles.

Uranium mining and milling are rather new industries in Wyoming and South Dakota, but, in the past 15 years, ore valued at more than $400,000,000 has been mined and milled in the region. The major uranium deposits are in structural and/ or erosional basins or on the flanks of uplifts. The principal host rocks are medium- to coarse-grained sandstones that were deposited in continental or brackish-water environments and were derived in large part from the granitic cores of the uplifts and the sedimentary rocks that flank the cores. The ages of the host rocks range from Cretaceous to Miocene, but more than 95 per cent of the known reserves in the region are in rocks of early Eocene age. The bulk of the ore in the region is unoxidized and lies below the water table; some oxidized ore has been mined in the Powder River Basin and Black Hills districts. The unoxidized ore comprises pyrite, uraninite and/ or coffinite, marcasite, hematite, jordisite(?), and selenium. Minerals in the oxidized ore include hydrous uranium carbonates, phosphates, and sulfates and hydrous uranium and/ or vanadium silicates. The deposits are in the form of ore rolls that contain from a few hundred to a few hundred thousand tons of ore, ranging in grade from 0.1 per cent to 1.0 per cent U3O8. The rolls are at the margins of large tabular bodies of sandstone that has been altered by the orebearing solutions. The deposits are believed to have resulted from the interaction of an alkaline; oxidizing, ore-bearing ground water and a reducing environment. Exploration guides include the spatial relations of ore to altered sandstone, favorable lithology in the host rock, the content of certain elements and/ or compounds in ground water, and the relation of deposits to major paleodrainages.

Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. "Pre-concentration of precious metal and base metal ore types is becoming more relevant with the discovery, development and operation of many lower grade deposits around the world. The fluctuations in metal prices and currencies expose many mines to risks especially dealing with low and variable ore grades. Pre-concentration, the process of concentrating the valuable metal into a smaller mass yield, effectively results in the introduction of higher feed grades to milling circuits. Gangue rejection, the removal of lower S.G. waste rock from the circuit, not only results in higher downstream grades but also potentially removes harder, non-valuable mineral, providing significant power savings within the circuit. The pre-concentration or ‘gangue rejection’ process offers a number of benefits when considering the treatment of marginal ore deposits, especially if it can be performed at a coarse crush size; these benefits include a reduction of the operating costs and the feed of more metal units to the mill. Gekko Systems has effectively utilized the Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) to pre-concentrate the valuable metal, achieving high primary recoveries into a range of mass yields resulting in upgrade ratios between 2 and 10 times. This paper explores: the benefits of pre-concentrating ‘marginal’ ore deposits prior to the milling circuit; the selective rejection of ore types that may affect either the recovery or comminution process; and also looks into the potential to effectively reduce the ‘cut-off’ grade when considering the mine planning process. Case studies of projects using the IPJ to pre-concentrate and reject gangue are also included. Pre-concentration and gangue rejection provide the potential to develop marginal ore deposits, thus providing higher grades, less gangue and more metal at a lower operating cost to producers."

Stockpiles have always been a necessary part of coal mining except, perhaps, when a person was mining only for the needs of his family from a seam on his home place or coal mined for the use of a small hamlet and carried to each man's house as it was mined. Then it may have been stockpiled at each man's place for several days or on the village common. Mining with this limited production required waste stockpiling. Stockpiling of the products of coal mining, both coal and waste material, has always been a necessity. Very little coal has ever been moved directly or immediately from the working face to the point of consumption and burned. It has always been expedient to stockpile the coal some- where and store the waste.

From 2002 to 2006, longwall mining was undertaken directly beneath the Cataract Tunnel, which is a 100-year-old, heritage-listed tunnel in Hawkesbury Sandstone responsible for delivering 20 per cent of Sydney’s annual water supply. At one location, undermining resulted in movement of at least 350 mm along a known fault that transects the tunnel. During this movement, the continued operation of the tunnel was ensured through a careful system of planning, monitoring and management.Of key importance to the success of the operation was the use of advanced numerical modelling to guide operations at all levels, including feasibility assessment, pre-mine mitigation works, monitoring design, operation performance and post-mining condition. This allowed many aspects of the potential impacts to be explored, including joint movements, rock mass deformations and changes in permeability. A key challenge was to successfully model near-field influences on adverse geological structure due to very far-field effects. This paper explains the model’s conceptual development, calibration, performance and limitations.Modelling provided the confidence to manage the impacts of large mining-induced movement on key infrastructure and ultimately predicted fault movement accurately. To control direct blasting costs many open pit mines dewater and line wet blastholes before loading them with ANFO or Heavy ANFO blends of explosives. The plastic lay-flat tubing used for these liners can be punctured during loading and allow water to partly dissolve and desensitise the explosive column which reduces blasting performance.

It is well known that certain silicates such as the feldspars and beryl can be readily floated from quartz at a low pH value using a long chain cationic collector in the presence of a fluoride.1-3 However, the mechanism whereby the fluoride activates feldspars and beryl is not known. Indeed, only a few authors have even speculated about possible mechanisms.1,3,4 As a first approach to the problem, it is perhaps best to look closely at the interesting character of hydrofluoric acid and how it dissolves silica and silicic acid. Hydrofluoric acid, unlike hydrochloric acid, is a weak acid with a dissociation constant of about 3.53 x 10-4 at 25°C.5 The reason for the weak acidic character of HF lies in the very small size of the fluoride ion.6 The pKa value is 3.45 which means that at pH 3.45 half the HF is present in molecular form and half in ionic form. The anion present is probably HF2.-6 At pH values below the pKa value, molecular concentration increases rapidly at the expense of the HF2- anion. It is known that HF readily attacks glass, silicates, quartz and silicic acid. The equation usually cited pertaining to the first step in HF attack of silica is6-'

The understanding of the influence of the different types of apatite on the performance of mineral processing of igneous phosphate ores is still a challenge due to the difficulty to explain why some types of apatite floats in the froth flotation cell and others do not under the same conditions. Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão mine: predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and less frequently yellow apatite. The chemical composition of these types of apatite was determined by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and LA-ICP-MS. Blue and green apatite respond well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite is the one bearing the lowest P2O5 content and the largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest P and Ca grades and lowest substitution level. A negative correlation of the amount of phosphorus with fluorine was observed. Furthermore, impregnation of iron oxide-hydroxides in the yellow apatite was also observed. Therefore, the low flotation behaviour is due to low crystallinity coupled with impregnation onto its surface.

In the past few years, much effort has been spent in elucidating the impact of diesel engines on the mine environment. This paper summarizes diesel fundamentals , exhaust emissions and typical tailpipe concentrations. Mine sampling results and an evaluation of exhaust treatment systems are discussed. A review of changes in pollutant concentrations between the tailpipe and the mine exit is made and suggestions are given to reduce operator exposure to diesel contaminants.

Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec
