The incidence of liquid inzmiscibility in binar)) indium alloys has been theoretically analyzed on the basis of the Hildebrand-Alott equation. Bedictions of miscibility or otherwise Imve in general been found to agree with those phase diagrams that are already publislzed in the literature. Out of a total of 27 systems, where either the complete phase diagrams are published or liquid immiscible behavior is reported, the Predictions agree with the experimental data in 25 systems, the exceptions being the Te-In and Ni-In systems. According to the equation, liquid immiscibility is also indicated in the binary alloys of indium with K, Rb, Cs, Na, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, V. Nb(Cb), Ta, W, U, Re, Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir. RECENT investigations by the author have shown that indium when alloyed with iron, chromium, and cobalt shows liquid immiscible behavior.1"3 The Fe-In phase diagram shows a wide range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible.4,5 No intermediate phases are present in this system. No precise information is available about the extent of liquid immiscibility in the Co-In system. However, it is certain that there is a range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible and that there are two or three intermediate phases,376 in the system. Liquid immiscibility is also strongly indicated in the Cr-In system and no evidence was obtained in the brief investigation to indicate the presence of intermediate Cr-In phases.2 The present paper deals with a theoretical analysis of binary alloys of indium with certain elements of the periodic table and indicates the systems where liquid immiscibility may be expected. The incidence of liquid immiscibility in binary systems has been theoretically examined by many workers and many excellent papers are available on the subject. In this paper, the alloy systems are examined on the basis of the more recent ideas proposed by Mott.7,8 It has been claimed8 that the Mott parameter predicts the incidence of miscibility or otherwise with reasonable accuracy and consistency. BACKGROUND TO MOTT&apos;S APPROACH Hildebrand applied his immiscibility rule for non-polar liquids to various alloy systems.9 The basis of this rule is that the equation for the excess free energy of formation of a liquid solution is rather similar to the theoretical expression for the energy of mixing of a regular solution. He postulated that when the heat of mixing is sufficiently high, separation into liquid phases will occur and the condition for complete CUPPAM DASARATHY is at the Research Centre, British Steel Corporation, (South Wales Group), Port Talbot, Glamorgan, Great Britain. Manuscript submitted March 12, 1969. IMD miscibility was shown as where VA and VB were the atomic volumes of the components A and B, and ?EV the energy of vaporization of the component. The term (?EVA/VA)1/2 was regarded as a measure of the binding energy of the component A and was called the L&apos;solubility parameter" 8A. On this basis immiscibility occurs when 1/2(VA+VB)(bA-bBf > 2RT [2] Apparently, however, there were several inconsistencies in that according to Eq. [2] several systems known to be miscible in the liquid state were predicted as immiscible. MOTT&apos;S ANALYSIS ~ott&apos;" regards that the reason for the inconsistencies arising out of Hildebrand&apos;s equation was largely due to the electrochemical attraction between the two elements, not being considered. Hence, Eqs. [I] and [2] were modified by taking into account the electro-negativities of the two elements XA and XB, and Mott arrived at an equation for immiscibility, i(VA + VB)(6A - aB)2 - 23,Q60n(XA - XBf > 2RT [3j which can be written as i **&£*&* >&apos;*°™- &apos;• HI T being the melting point of the more refractory component of the system. In Eq. [4], the numerator was called the Hildebrand term, the denominator, the electronegativity term, and their ratio, the Mott number. Mott observed that if the Mott number of a given binary system was greater than the maximum number of Pauling bonds which the two metals could form, then liquid immiscibility could be expected. The maximum number of bonds formed by a given metal was considered to be directly related to the number of bonding electrons available, i.e., to its maximum valency. Since the valencies of the elements considered vary from 1 to 6, Mott assumed that if the ratio of the Hildebrand term to the electronegativity term was >6, then immiscibility could be expected. On the contrary, if the ratio is <1, the metals should be miscible. Further, the alloying behavior is not only influenced by the valencies of the two elements but also by the relative atomic sizes that influence the types of packing and hence the coordination number. Mott considers that on average the maximum number of near neighbors of unlike atoms is 6. Thus, on both valency and size factor considerations, Mott concludes that the maximum number of bonds&apos; possible in any system was 6, this being the upper limit of the Mott number for miscibility. Rock samples were taken, away from zones of mineralization , from seven sections of five rhyolitic zones as define d by Spence (l967) in the Noranda area. The purpose of the investigation was to test whether there were intrinsic differences between the zones which would differentiate between non-productive zones and productive zones. For the elements sought (major elements, Cu , Pb , Zn and S) , no clear chemical difference between the zones was found. Thus, identification of a favour able zone from the over -all composition of the zone does not appear promising. Within sampled sections, there is no clear gradual compositional change up through the sections. A capping of highly siliceous massive rhyolite is present in five of the sections sampled. A layer of relatively basic material occurs near the base of individual units. The third (mine zone) and later zones contain abundant pyroclastic material, where as the non-productive zones do not.

As part of Inco&apos;s $115 million Fluid Bed Roaster SO2 Abatement Project, a new weak acid treatment plant (WATP) was constructed to treat bleed solutions from the Copper Cliff Smelting Complex gas-cleaning circuits. The WATP produces an iron-arsenic co-precipitate, termed "basic ferric arsenate" (BFA), which requires disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Following analysis of many potential options, the short-listed disposal alternatives were: A) Co-disposal of the BFA?gypsum sludge with rock tailings, a portion of which would be used in mine backfill, with the remainder being sent to the tailings area, and B) Co-disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge with pyrrhotite tailings in the tailings area. Testwork showed that the addition of BFA?gypsum sludge to mine backfill samples increased the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the backfill for most samples, especially those at lower binder content ratios. Extensive analysis was conducted on samples taken from the Copper Cliff tailings area, where BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco&apos;s Copper Refining Electrowinning Department has been co-deposited with pyrrhotite tailings since 1990. Pore water samples from these areas contained very low arsenic concentrations, indicating that the arsenic had remained stable in that environment. Ultimately, co-deposition with pyrrhotite tailings was chosen as the preferred option for the disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco&apos;s new WATP.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods and costs at various mines in the United States. It describes such methods at the Lincoln tungsten mine of the Wah Chang Mining Corp., Lincoln County, Nev. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods, practices and costs. The Lincoln mine in Lincoln County, Nev., in the southeastern part of the [tate], was acquired by the Wah Chang Mining Corp., in April 1951. Mining methods and costs are of special interest at this property because of the low costs and good production record achieved through a well planned program of exploration, development, and exploitation. Operations were discontinued in July 1957 after the Federal Government suspended the tungsten purchase program.

It is somewhat reassuring to note that the United States has an abundance of coal reserves which can be used to bridge the widening gap between the nation&apos;s energy production and consumption. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently established a demonstrated coal reserve base of 434 billion tons. (31)(Figure 1) As can be observed, the major percentage of the reserves is in the West. Although surface coal mining in the West has been gaining increased attention in recent years, western reserves that must be deep mined are significantly greater. Though deep mining activity in the west is very limited and accounts for less than 2% of the annual production, the primary reason, quite probably, is the greater thickness of the seams as compared to those found in the East. Forty-five billion tons of the western demonstrated coal reserve base for underground mining are in seams greater than 10 ft. in thickness. (37) Thick coal seams do not lend themselves readily to extraction with the underground mining methods practiced in the United States today. Experiences from the practices in other countries can serve only as guidelines. Consequently, a concerted effort is necessary to overcome the technical difficulties.

Respirable dust poses long-term health issues to personnel working in mining and civil projects where mechanized mining and tunneling machines are used for hard rock excavation. Machines, such as longwall shearers, roadheaders, or continuous miners, use consumable picks to cut rock. However, rock dust is generated in the work environment each time the pick tip contacts the rock surface. Additionally, the generated dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production, such as at transfer points. The purpose of this study is to characterize respirable dust particles generated at the pick tip at two stages of pick wear: new and moderately worn. Understanding dust characteristics in terms of concentration, size distribution, and particle shape throughout the life-cycle of the pick will provide a basis to mine and tunnel operators for changing out picks to mitigate dust generation at the source. This paper discusses the dust characteristics generated from preliminary full-scale cutting tests in a laboratory of an igneous rock block cut with conical picks at new and moderately worn levels of wear. The moderately worn pick generated a size distribution that favored smaller particle sizes compared to the new pick. The moderately worn pick also generated more overall dust, as the concentration level in mg/m3 was over double the amount of the new pick. Lastly, both picks generated particles that had similar aspect ratios and roundness measures.

HISTORY of the Porcupine area has been pub-lished in detail by the Ontario Bureau. of Mines in several issues of its annual reports. An. interesting volume could be written on: this topic; especially if personalities were introduced, such as the. transaction whereby the original title to the Hollinger group of claims was settled between Ben Hollinger and Alex Gillies by the toss of a coin. The early history of the McIntyre mine also had its thrilling events, such as its manager, R. J. Ennis, dodging the sheriff and deposit-ing red-hot gold bricks in the bank to meet his pay-roll. The occurrence of quartz veins containing low gold values was reported in 1896 by E. M. Burwash and again in 1899 by W. A. Parks. The first application for a mining claim appears to have been applied for on Dec. 30, 1906, by W. 0. Taylor, of Toronto, one of the old employees of the Hudson Bay Co. On the recom-mendation of Mr. Taylor, early prospecting was done on the shores of Porcupine Lake. It. was not until the spectacular discovery of the surface croppings at the Dome mine, by J. S. Wilson in 1909, that a rush to the district took place. Exploration was carried on during 1910 and 1911. The big boom was on in 1911, when claims sold on the evidence of mere rock croppings, owing to the prevailing heavy overburden. Rock croppings with specks of gold brought big prices. The country was heavily timbered and most difficult to prospect. My first trip was made during the summer of 1911, while the railroad was under construction from Porquis Junction to South Porcupine. I published my observations in the Canadian Mining Journal, Dec. 15, 1911, discussing in particular the character of the ore deposits and the future prospects of the camp. The first mills were erected in 1911, only to be destroyed by the disastrous fire in July of that year. They were rebuilt and the first important shipments are recorded in 1912. The history of the camp from the discovery of the Dome to the present consists of alternate chapters of great optimism and those of a more non-committal nature. For the engineer unfamiliar with the character of the deposits of this area, and the north country in general, it is at times most difficult to draw conclusions and submit definite recommendations. When valuable orebodies apex at depth, with no surface showings other than slightly mineralized veins of quartz or quartz containing a little visible gold; when at depth valuable veins and ore deposits, paralleling the one being explored, are developed by cross-cutting, such as Nos. 85-58 on the Hollinger, which have been its largest producers, the engineer assumes responsibilities rarely called for in other mining districts. This fluctuating aspect is exemplified in the three large producers, and may be duplicated with some of the old producers now being explored.

?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.&apos; In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness. What is the preferred electrolytic cell design and why? Hall: Considerable research remains to be done on electrolytic cell design. Studies are presently being conducted to determine optimum voltage and amperage. Zadra cells, which were used in some of the first carbon plants, are efficient when properly installed. Gold and silver are deposited on large-capacity, cylindrical steel wool cathodes. At times high value sludge falls from the cathode to the bottom of the cell. Rectangular cells, which were developed at some smaller operations in Nevada, require less floor space and have some desirable features in that cathodes can be moved and sludge can be removed from cell bottoms without actually shutting down the circuit. In South Africa two types of cells using graphite and diaphragm configurations are being tested. Duncan: The rectangular cell has one problem it&apos;s easy for shortcircuiting to occur. If you don&apos;t have a good seal on the side of the tank and on the bottom, the solution is going to want to flow around the bottom and sides of the cathodes and you&apos;re going to get poor performance in the cell. That is the advantage the Zadra cell has over the rectangular cell. With good sealing, which is a must, you should be able to get a ratio of the value of the solution going in to the value of the solution coming out of 10 to 1. Ken, can you tell me what you&apos;re attaining on the Zadra? Hall: At the Homestake gold operation in Lead, the cathode in the No. 1 electrowinning cell is loaded to about 600 ounces when it is moved to the refinery. At this time the No. 2 cathode is moved to the No. 1 cell. The No. 3 cathode is moved to the No. 2 cell and a cathode with new steel wool is placed in the No. 3 cell. In rectangular cells this sometimes is not possible because the loading on the cathode in the last cell may be as high as that in the No. 1 cell. As Don has pointed out this can probably be prevented by good seal design between cathodes. Potter: At the risk of sounding as though I&apos;m straddling the fence, I really believe that either the round cell, as developed by Jack Zadra, or the rectangular cell will do an acceptable job. The Zadra is a fine unit. Leaks are not unknown but there are not very many. However, the rectangular cell is very saving of floor space. Plastics have been greatly improved during the past year or two and there is a very efficient design for the rectangular cell. It would have six cathodes in it and contain about 25 ft of steel wool. The body of this rectangular cell would be reinforced fiberglass plastic but with an integral lining of a high temperature plastic. I think either cell is so efficient and reliable that I would almost be tempted to flip a coin depending on floor space requirements. Either cell can be used to pull a loaded cathode and to advance the lesser loaded cathodes. Don, what is the configuration of your cell? Duncan: The Pinson rectangular cell has dimensions 2 ft wide, 30 in deep, and 10 ft long-long enough to take a dozen cathodes and anodes. We are currently using six of each but are not up to full capacity as yet. It&apos;s a steel tank coated with rubber. We have copper bus bars, which brings to mind that the last cathode in the tank, in one instance, was loaded heavier than the first one. That was probably a function of poor contact between cathodes and the bus bar. You can have erosion of the bus bar and if you don&apos;t get current flowing into the anode and out of the cathode, the cells will not function properly. Kappes: Just a few comments on cell design. In an alcohol stripping circuit we are running in Beatty„ NV, we are using PVC pipes for all circuitry piping and a commercial polypropylene electrolytic cell. They seem to be working quite nicely. The cell itself has eight cathodes measuring 18 in2. At six gallons per minute flow into the cell, at an average gold content of about 500 ppm, we seem to get good loading on the first three to four cathodes and not much on the end cathodes. At 12 gallons a minute flow we seem to be seeing gold uniformly along all eight cathodes. We are running at quite a high amperage level, about 400 amps into that cell. Gene McClelland, US Bureau of Mines, Reno Research Center (from the floor): I was associated with a company where the packing density of their steel wool cathodes was much too high and created some short-circuiting problems in their electrowinning circuit. I would like to ask the panel if they can recommend a packing density for cathodes in pounds of steel wool per cubic foot. Hall: The weight of steel wool put on one of our cathodes is 10 lb and the dimensions of the cathode are such that density would be about 0.75 lb/ft3. Duncan: I made a rough calculation and I&apos;m estimating about 2 lb/ft3. Potter: In checking over a number of electrowinning operations, I found apparently very satisfactory operation within the limits that have been mentioned. I have come to a figure of about 0.5-1.0 lb of medium grade steel wool per cubic foot packed as uniformly as possible, of course. One consideration in packing is the fact that there should be good contact between the steel wool and the conductor. Operators tend to compact the steel wool more than would be desirable just to try to maintain good contact.

High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.

A series of economic evaluations of processes for producing metallurgicalgrade alumina from low- grade aluminous materials is being conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relative processing costs . The two processes considered in this evaluation are concerned with the recovery of alumina from clay through the formation of ammonium alum . In the first process , dehydrated clay is leached with ammonium bisulfate solution ; in the second process , clay is baked with ammonium sulfate and then leached with water containing a small quantity of sulfuric acid . After the alumina is dissolved by either of these methods , the iron is reduced to the ferrous state to avoid crystallization of ferric sulfate with the alum . The recovery of pure alum requires two crystallization steps . The alum crystals are then redissolved and precipitated with ammonia to produce alumina hydrate , which is calcined to a - alumina . These evaluations are based on published work , and the proposed plants are designed for a capacity of 1,000 tons of alumina per day . The estimated operating cost per ton of alumina for the bisulfate leaching process is $ 117.06 , and for the sulfate baking process , $ 109.26 . Using a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 , the estimated fixed capital costs , in the same order , are $ 158 million and $ 146 million . Under current economic conditions , these two processes are not competitive with the Bayer process for the production of alumina from bauxite . Since small improvements will not reduce costs sufficiently to approach competitive costs , future research work with these processes should be confined to areas likely to result in major cost reductions .

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. I A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches I) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, 2) empirical, based on empirical design formulae, and 3) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools was addressed earlier (Basu and Kuruppu, 1995). The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing structures applicable to mining geomechnics. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis application in excavation design.

Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

The Quality index is a useful tool allowing to assess the metallurgical quality of aluminium AlSiMg foundry alloys (A356/357). Its value is calculated from the ultimate tensile strength and elongation; it increases with the metallurgical quality of the casting, i.e. with finer dendrites, lower microporosity and inclusion count and lower iron content. This Quality index does not depend on the degree of temper applied during the heat treatment (aging time and temperature). After defining the Quality index, it will be explained how it can be predicted from the knowledge of the local solidification conditions obtained from modelling. The paper will then present four case studies of castings for which the prediction of the Quality index by modelling was made. These case studies from different authors will involve the three most common casting processes used for producing high integrity aluminium castings, namely: sand casting, permanent mould casting and investment casting (lost wax). In all cases, the accuracy of the prediction will be assessed by comparing the predicted Quality index distributions to the experimental values based on the published measured values of the local tensile properties.

This volume is the fourth of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume II: Dragline Model, and Volume III: Mine Coordinate Generator System. The Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) was first developed" in 1971 and modified and updated in 1975. The present work is an update of the 1975 version and provides a direct link between the geology and reserves system and the various activities of the mining equipment in a mining system. Also, the modeling techniques in OPMHS/2 have incorporated a flexible method for describing various equipment (shovels, trucks, belts, trains, etc.), locations, their sequence of operations, place changes, and their interactions. These features allow for studying mining equipment selection, mining method analysis and reclamation planning. This report describes the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator Version 2 (OPMHS/2). The report details the program features, operation, and application. Through an extensive set of appendices, the data input sequence, input variable definitions, sample data listing and program output are presented in detail.

Today road construction sites utilize more and more information modeling in design phases as well as model based 3-D machine control systems in site operations. For main contractor, the management and control of all the site operations is a demanding task including also many challenges created by continuously developing new technology. In the paper, the main requirements for successful dynamic site management are introduced. The dynamic management means real-time possibilities for information acquiring, transfer and further utilization of the information in the management. An integration model to expand the current way of management and the utilization of present 3-D machine control systems is introduced. Different practical test results using two new different dynamic management systems are presented and evaluated. The first experiments and the results have been provided using the prototype system developed in a research project called DigiINFRA by the University of Oulu and Technical Research Center of Finland. Also, there have been tested a new commercial management system developed recently in Finland. In the conclusion, an expectation for the next generation for more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded.

The contractor examined L.T. White&apos;s Patent No. 3524680 and, finding it in need of engineering refinements, proceeded with a conceptual design of a variable wall mining machine. The contractor then proceeded to assess the feasibility of the variable wall mining machine measured against the criteria specified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The feasibility was judged from a physical aspect, a health and safety aspect, and an economic aspect. The Variable Wall Mining Machine was judged to be feasible on all three aspects provided that certain specified practices were adopted. Description The specifications and design and performance parameters of the Variable Wall Mining System as conceptualized are summarized in Tables I and II. The system consists of a side-cutting auger operating in a string of identical 12 ft. sections, along a 500 ft. retreating longwall face. In addition to the 41 identical sections, there is a special drive and discharge section at the head gate.
