The object of this investigation is to determine the field for the use of detachable bits in metal mines of the United States by correlating the data developed through the experience of mines using these bits. Most of the metal-mining districts in the Middle Western and Eastern States already have been visited. The purpose of the present circular is to define the problem and to discuss the factors that must be considered in order to determine, under different operating conditions, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of bit. Some of the data obtained to date are presented to emphasize points made in the discussion. It is hoped that, as the study progresses, a great many data on drilling will become available. It is evident that since in some cases these data will be confidential they cannot, therefore, be published except as they may be included in average figures covering several different mines. Some data already secured are of this nature, Although considerable information on drilling operations has been gathered at different mines, there were only a few instances in which there were available complete data on all the factors entering into the total cost of drilling with detachable bits and with conventional bits on regular drill steel.

The present knowledge on ground movements and mining damage is mainly based on observations made when mining seamlike deposits. The studies, rules, and regulations in different countries agree in that the differential ground movements, especially the strain, account for the damage to structures. Accordingly, large buildings are particularly susceptible. The opinions on what amount of ground deformation induces what degree of structural damage are not quite uniform. Mining damage can be reduced or prevented by structural and/or underground precautions. The latter comprise measures for generally reducing the ground movements (leaving pillars, filling, partial extraction) and for reducing temporary movements (rapid extraction, specially arranged workings). Because the differential movements decrease with increasing depth of mining, safety pillars are largely dispensable at greater depths. Shafts are mainly affected by the vertical derivatives of rock displacements, but extraction in the vicinity of shafts is feasible even under difficult conditions. The theoretical concept of the ground movement process established in part 1 of this work is in qualitative agreement with the facts herein observed. As a quantitative approach, it should be applied to calculating ground surface movements rather than rock movements about underground openings. It can be extended by introducing more detailed strata characteristics.

The decreasing availability of land in urban areas, and the increasing demand for urban development is leading to the construction of taller and heavier buildings at increasingly marginal sites. Such structures usually require founding at depth and modern construction methods are making the economics of piled foundations ever more attractive (Salgado, 1995). However, the urban environment is not suited to pile driving. Conventional dynamic installation techniques (i.e. drop hammer or vibro-piling) induce vibrations and settlement in a zone close to the pile, and cause noise and dust pollution. Damage to existing structures resulting from pile driving vibrations is not uncommon (Tomlinson, 1986).

A Seismic Hazard Scale (SHS) has been developed to provide a practical seismic hazard assessment tool applicable to mine site personnel. It has been applied to seismic data sets from numerous Western Australian mines. The SHS is applicable when quantifying seismic hazard on a mine wide scale, on a mining block scale, and on a local cluster-by-cluster scale. Spatial mapping of variations in seismic hazard is a particularly powerful application of the scale. The SHS is sensitive to temporal increases in seismic hazard. It has also been shown that the SHS can be applied to estimate seismic hazard when seismic monitoring data are not available. The SHS is a simple derivation of the Gutenberg-Richter relation. There are assumptions and limitations to the SHS that need to be considered when applying it to mine seismicity data.

Compared to conventional fully ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, jet fans can offer a number of advantages for control of smoke during fire emergencies and dilution of diesel engine exhaust products in vehicular and rail tunnels. The success of jet fan applications is the result of a balance between the temperature de-rating of the fan, buoyancy forces and the installation momentum transfer efficiency. This paper provides a case study of a unique application of vertically-mounted jet fans in ventilation shafts used to provide both emergency ventilation and pollution control for an overbuild created by the construction of a series of commercial high-rise residential buildings over a portion of an existing passenger rail line. A detailed evaluation of a set of shafts for one building is presented, including a discussion of the calculation methods used to estimate the required jet fan capacity and the results of the subsequent numerical analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics to simulate the performance of the jet fans during train car fire emergencies.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. Spatial variance of rock properties is an important characteristic of rock which addresses the heterogeneity of mechanical and physical properties and their effect on underground mining. Assessing spatial variance can be useful for both locating potential difficult grounds and performing reliability analysis in the mining support system. This study shows a microscale numerical model for rock material based on continuum mechanics. To consider the spatial correlation factor of mechanical properties in realistic rock mass, this study introduces a spatial correlation concept into the traditional type III extreme value distribution model. Based on the improved microscale random model, we conducted a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests and one longwall mine model to investigate the progressive failure of rock. The results show that spatial correlation factor can significantly affect the load-deformation curves and fracture patterns. The spatial variance model was applied to a longwall mine that included several cutting sequences to observe the influence of the spatial variance on roof behavior. The cohesion and friction random fields induced failure that propagated randomly through the immediate roof in different entries. The results showed that the spatial variance provides an accurate prediction of erratic roof falls in coal mines.

Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.

WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

"Mineralogical characterization and metallurgical extraction of silver is challenging due to its complex mineralogy and chemistry. Over 200 Ag-bearing minerals have been identified and a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals. Silver can occur not only as discrete microscopic (visible) silver minerals but also as submicroscopic (invisible) silver in other minerals. During processing, silver may form passivation compounds such as silver hydroxide, silver sulphide, jarosite-like silver sulphate, silver halide or silver cyanide precipitate, all of which may negatively impact on silver extraction. Knowing the deportment of silver in the ore and its metallurgical products is important in flowsheet design and plant optimization. This paper begins with the classification of silver ores and minerals and a review of processing techniques, and focuses on the major mineralogical factors to explain why and how these factors affect silver extraction. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the application of silver process mineralogy in flowsheet design and plant optimization.INTRODUCTIONSilver was known to and utilized by mankind since ancient time. Actually, it was one of the earliest metals discovered and utilized by mankind after gold and copper.Silver is the whitest metallic element. It is rare, strong, corrosion resistant, and unaffected by moisture, vegetable acids, or alkalis. Silver is also resonant, moldable, malleable, and possesses the highest thermal and electric conductivity of any substance. The chemical symbol for silver is Ag, from the Latin argentum, which means white and shining. Although silver does not react with many chemicals, it does react with sulfur, which is always present in air at trace amounts. The reaction causes silver to tarnish, and consequently it must be polished periodically to retain its luster.Silver possesses many special physical characteristics and qualities that make it useful to a variety of industries. The photography industry is the biggest user of silver compounds. Silver forms the most light-sensitive halide salts, which are essential to developing highquality photographic prints. Silver also has the highest electrical conductivity per unit volume of any metal, including copper, so it is used extensively in electronics."

The surge of activity in the solar energy market, spurred by government incentives, has created new and more efficient solar technologies, but issues surrounding land- and water-use have backlogged the full-scale development of solar farms. This paper explores siting solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, such as mine tailings impoundments. Historically, mining and has been integral to Arizona?s economy, but has dwindled in relevance due to urban pressures and environmental regulations. Currently, it is legal to site solar power plants on degraded or polluted lands, but the question remains whether the economics of this degraded lands solar development is more favorable than developing pristine land. Therefore, we explore economics of developing mine tailings impoundments at both the institutional and financial level. Methods of research for this paper were interviews with government regulators, environmental advocacy organizations, farmers, and mining company executives. Financial models using extant tax incentives show a positive net present value for the installation of solar power plants, even when accounting for the costs of land remediation.

This paper presents an overview of work conducted over several years to investigate the continuous stope closure profiles recorded in tabular excavations and the use of this data as a hazard indicator. In spite of the brittle nature of the rock, measurements in gold mines and intermediate depth platinum mines revealed a significant time-dependent closure component. Various approaches to simulate the time-dependent closure have been investigated. Viscoelastic theory is able to simulate the time-dependent closure behaviour, but there are subtle problems with the use of this theory as it cannot simulate the failure processes in the rock. To overcome these problems, continuum and discontinuum elasto-viscoplastic models were developed by the authors. Discontinuum models have the advantage of being able to simulate the creep behaviour of prominent discontinuities. Development of these models has led to useful insights into rock mass deformation and has made the numerical simulation of parameters, such as rate of mining, possible for the first time. A number of practical applications for the mining industry have been developed from this study. In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steal in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steal as impurities. For example, silicon additions form Si02 or combinations of Si02 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MeO, Si02, and Al 203, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods, The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

Alkaline leaching with sodium carbonate solution adjusted to pH 9·5 to 10·0 preferentially dissolves thorium from a mixture of rare earth and thorium hydroxides. Rare earth sodium carbonates form in the alkaline leaching stage.These are converted to rare earth oxides for use as optical and ophthalmic polishing agents. Quadrivalent cerium is extracted under similar alkaline leaching conditions.INTRODUCTIONAustralia has made significant contributions to mineral chemistry and mineral dressing. As often happens with an industrially immature country, research investigations often outstrip the ability or desire of commerce to exploit them. It is wrong to think exclusively in terms of export of raw materials. Imagination assists in developing world trends. The chemical utilization of mineral sands has interested a group of investigators, chiefly at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.) and, more recently, in the mining industry itself. From an international point of view the highlight of this work was Newnham's (1960) process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium. Earlier work at C.S.I.R.O. investigated the chlorination of rutile, zircon, and monazite. Assuming that titanium tetrachloride would be available in large quantities in the post war years, extensive work was done by Kraitzer, McTaggart, and Winter (1948) on organic compounds of titanium. This work led to the development of heat resistant paints, plastic compositions, and improved organic protective coatings that predated overseas work by up to seven years. (Post, Shiihara and Schwartz, 1961; Anon, 1955). Contributions were made to the production of refractory hard metals (Kraitzer, 1949; Kraitzer and Newnham, 1956). Pilkington and Wylie (1947) and Urie (1947) investigated the production of rare earths from monazite by an acid process.

This paper presents the results of a research study that is being conducted by the Mine Effluents Program, Mining and Mineral Science Laboratory (MMSL), Natural Resources Canada aimed at evaluating biotechnology processes for the treatment of nitrogen compounds such as thiocyanide (CNS) and ammonia (NH4-N) which are present in gold mill effluents. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology, commonly used for the biological treatment of municipal and industrial effluents, was used in this study. In the SBR process, the micro-organisms were able to degrade CNS to NH4-N and NH4-N to nitrate (NO3-N) at operating conditions of two 12 h treatment cycles per day, with pH maintained in the 7.4 to 7.6 range, and at room temperature (approximately 21°C) and also at 12 °C. The end products of CNS and NH4-N biological oxidation were NO3-N and sulphate (SO4) that are relatively non-toxic. Partial removal of NO3-N was achieved by biological denitrification reactions in the SBR process. The SBR process effluent was measured to be non-toxic to rainbow trout based on the 96 h acute toxicity test. The microbial consortium isolated from the SBR treating a simulated effluent was able to effectively oxidize CNS and NH4-N to NO3-N in water samples (under batch conditions) collected at three mine sites located in Quebec, the Northwest Territories, and Yukon.

Mining companies are challenged with increased difficulty in delivering capital projects on schedule and within budget. In 2005, PricewaterhouseCoopers global review of major capital projects in the mining industry only 2.5% of projects could be defined as successful when assessed across the four critical dimensions of scope, cost, schedule and business benefits. Thus 97.5% of major mining capital projects were not successful according to the criteria PricewaterhouseCoopers used. Normally if a project fails on all these criteria it indicates scope creep. Scope creep refers to the change in a project's scope after the project work has started. As a result, the projects drift away from their original design, timeline, and budget, and as a consequence destroy business benefits. The major reasons for scope creep are poor change control and the lack of proper front end loading. Change control and front end loading are based on project processes in the planning and monitoring & control process group of the Project Management Body of Knowledge1 (PMBOK). This paper will focus on key factors to consider during project scheduling/planning with special reference to cost and schedule (using Microsoft Project as a tool although the principal is universal)

"Fiber reinforcement has emerged as an alternative to steel bars in precast concrete segments due to advantages such as saving cost and reducing production time while developing a more robust product with improved handling and long-term durability. ACI recently drafted a new report as the first design guideline on FRC tunnel segments to provide specific guidance for this emerging technology. ACI document offers general information on the history of FRC precast segments from tunneling projects throughout the world; a procedure for structural analysis and design based on governing load cases, and a description of the material parameters, tests and analyses required to complete the design. This paper summarizes the design considerations in this ACI guideline prepared by the authors of this paper as the main contributors. Application of this guideline to design of a tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.5 m (18 ft) results in elimination of steel bars.INTRODUCTIONPrecast concrete segments are installed to support the tunnel excavation behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in soft ground and weak rock applications. The TBM advances by thrusting off the completed rings of precast concrete segments that provide both the initial and final ground support as part of a one-pass lining system. These segments are typically designed to resist the permanent loads from the ground and groundwater as well as the temporary loads from production, transportation and construction. Tunnel segments are generally reinforced to resist the tensile stresses at both the Serviceability (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit States (ULS). With traditional rebar, a significant amount of labor is needed to assemble the cages and place the rebar, which results in higher production costs.Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) can be used to enhance the production, handling, and placement of precast concrete segments. This is because of the uniform dispersion of fibers throughout the segment to include the concrete cover, which is very advantageous for resisting the bursting and spalling stresses. These stresses develop as a result of the high loads induced on the segments during the TBM jacking process. The presence of fiber in the concrete matrix helps mitigate against unintentional impact loads during segment handling and tunnel construction operations."

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.
