Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have recently been installed at Mosaic’s South Fort Meade beneficiation plant for the purpose of improving phosphate recovery and throughput capacity. This technology was implemented after numerous laboratory, bench-scale, and on-site, pilot-scale test campaigns. The results from this detailed test work provided sufficient justification for the complete retrofit of the existing coarse and ultra-coarse flotation cells. Data indicate that the metallurgical results obtained with the full-scale separators are consistent with that obtained during both the bench- and pilot-scale evaluations. The apparent benefits, theory of operation, and commissioning of the equipment are also discussed.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

Mechanical rock breakers are used in block caving operations to reduce the size of ore fragments which are too large to pass through grizzlys at the load-haul-dumper tipping points. Several layouts of grizzly, rock breaker and ore pass are possible. The authors evaluated three different layouts at the Premier Mine Division of De Beers Consolidated Mines. The first layout consisted of a 15m surge bin before the breaker, which was located 15 m below the production level. The second layout had a 43 m longs urge bin, with the breaker located 43 m below the production level. The third layout did not have a surge bin, the breaker was located on the production level and operated at the tip. The ore throughput, availability and utilisation, delays, costs and operational experience with each system are discussed. It was found that the rock breakers did not represent a bottleneck in the ore transfer system and a surge bin did not significantly improve the production capacity. The mine has decided to make use of rock breakers situated on the production level, breaking rocks at the tip.

Kalgoorlie is the main mining centre of the Western Australian Goldfields. Its famous Golden Mile' has been noted for the exceptional width and richness of its goldtelluride lodes. Since the mid-1890s production on the major mines has been maintained practically continuously.Rich ore, though not as plentiful or as rich as formerly, is still (1948) being mined in places. Unexplored areas still remain within the main auriferous belt which offer reasonable chances of success with intensive exploration.Much detailed information has accumulated in recent years through the geological mapping of underground workings by some of the larger mining companies. The purpose of this paper is to correlate observations made in most of the accessible old and recent workings in the mines of the Lake View and Star group and elsewhere.GENERAL GEOLOGYRock TypesThe rock formations are:-1. Fine-grained (older) greenstones, locally referred to as calc schists. There were originally pillow lavas and other flow rocks of basic composition, now extensively chloritised and/or carbonated. Pillows and fragmental flow- tops are recognisable. Intercalated with flows near the top of the series are several beds of sediments.2. Graphitic slates and other more arenaceous sediments.Although referred to as slates, they are rarely more than well-bedded shales with poorly developed fracture cleavage:Thick bands of felsitic rock are found in places.

Brief descriptions of several types of unit pulverizeI' are given and the functioning of the components that crush, carry, dry and classify the coal is considered. A distinction is drawn between pulverizers which crush particle beds and those .operating by free-crushing. The overall performance of pulverijlers is considered in terms of correlations between mill variables, coal grindability, abrasiveness, moisture and particle size. Brief discussioiJ. of the influence of pulverized fuel quality on boiler operation and of pulverizing costs concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONModern coal pulverizers function as carriers of materials and as crushers, as dryers and as size classification machines and, thus, the unit pulverizer comprises. several components that normally function as separate apparatus. The controls of the unit pulverizer must have sufficient flexibility to accommodate rapid variations of boiler load or coal quality. Further, the machine must be robust, yet easy to maintain preferably at annual intervals-so that maintenance costs are small (for coal is a relatively cheap material). Usually, the full load of a modern pulverized-fuel fired boiler can be raised with one pulverizer off-line. All coals, from anthracites to brown coal, may be prepared as pulverized fuel (hereafter P.F.) .Each pulverizer of a direct-fired boiler has, broadly, to supply the burners with coal powdered so that about 80 per cent passes a 200 B.S. sieve and only a small proportion, less than about 10 per cent, remains on the 100 B.S. sieve. The classification processes must prevent any appreciable proportion of coarse particles in the P.F. and yet not return excessive proportions of "finished" fines. Three drill-blast cycles of 3.1 m advance achieved in one working shift of 7.5 hours at the Holsfjorden Tunnel project in Norway. The tunnel, 5235 m long, with a cross section of 8.6 m2, was completed several months ahead of schedule. This remarkable performance was achieved by a crew of 16 men, using machines specially designed for small tunnel excavation. The integration of drilling and charging into one unit, mucking and transport in another, reduced non-productive time considerably. The average cycle time of 140 min made it possible to complete three rounds in one 7.5 hours shift.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

Arsenic is a compound that has no significant market value. However, it needs to be removed from ores, concentrates and other process streams because of environmental or technical processing concerns. A wide range of arsenic containing minerals exists in nature, and in many instances these minerals are also associated with the ones that have commercial value. For example, sulfide copper ores are normally closely associated with minerals like enargite, Cu3AsS4 and tennantite Cu12As4S13. After mineral processing these arsenic sources can report to the waste waters and these effluents need to be treated before discharge or recycling. Ferric arsenate precipitation is a well-established method for stabilizing arsenic in effluents. Electrochemical arsenic removal utilizes the same adsorption/precipitation ideology as ferric arsenate precipitation. Electrochemical arsenic removal, even though it is a simple process in terms of equipment, is a complex system involving chemical and physical mechanisms taking place simultaneously to remove dissolved and/or solid arsenic components from wastewaters. The whole process can be described by the following three steps: 1) electrolytic oxidation at a sacrificial anode (dissolving electrode metal, iron for example), 2) chemical reaction between dissolved iron and arsenic to form a solid precipitate and 3) aggregation of the particles to form flocs, which can be removed by known solid/liquid separation methods. Electrochemical arsenic removal is a very efficient way to remove arsenic from different waters to very low residual concentrations.

Three test pile programs were conducted in Charleston, South Carolina to evaluate differences in bearing resistance due to installation methods. The tested piles were installed with impact hammers and vibratory drivers through soft clays and/or loose sands into the Cooper Marl, a stiff calcareous marine clay or silt. Piles driven into the Cooper Marl experience significant capacity gain with time following initial installation due largely to pore pressure dissipation. Pile size and pile type were both known to affect pore pressure generation during installation and subsequently the capacity gain with time. The test programs were primarily conducted to optimize pile design values and construction methods with regard to trestle construction but the results also contribute to the understanding of driven pile behavior. High strain dynamic testing was performed on several open-end pipe and H-piles. The measured difference in long-term bearing capacity of the H-piles as a result of the two installation methods was negligible, while the short-term bearing capacity of the pipe pile was larger when the piles were installed using impact hammers. The lower short-term resistance in the vibratory driven piles is attributed to larger excess pore pressures generated during installation compared to those generated during impact driving.

In September 2004, Gale Norton, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, presented the Manhattan Mine with a U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s 2004 Hardrock Mineral Environmental Award. The Manhattan Mine is a sustainable development showcase. The reclamation accomplishments at this Nevada gold mine demonstrate how modern reclamation techniques can restore an old mining district into an aesthetically pleasing landscape that can support multiple and sustainable uses. In a collaborative effort that relied on substantial community involvement, Round Mountain Gold Corp.(RMGC) has improved the environment and eliminated a number of public hazards associated with old, unsafe mining features. RMGC’s community collaboration, innovative engineering, creative reclamation design and corporate commitment to environmental excellence show what Secretary Norton’s 4 Cs Initiative looks like on the ground and inaction.

To achieve compliance with 2015 EPA Tier 4 Final regulations, which permit only around 10% of Tier 3 particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions, a number of technologies are being implemented. Use of a fuel borne nanoparticle combustion catalyst reduces the level of PM and unburned hydrocarbons exiting the combustion chamber, alleviating the burden on downstream exhaust after-treatment systems. The impact of an iron-ceria combustion catalyst (GO2) on carbon oxidation kinetics and on diesel engine emissions is presented. The iron-ceria nanoparticles catalyze carbon oxidation at lower temperatures and increase the oxidation rate by a factor of 18 at 400 °C. Engine tests on a generator powered by a John Deere Model engine and field tests on a Cummins ISC 330 tractor truck and CAT 3508B propulsion engines are presented. Use of GO2 resulted in a reduction in PM10 (particulate matter under 10 um) emissions of up to 26% and a hydrocarbon emission reduction of up to 41%. NOx emissions did not increase in these trials and the amount of change depended on engine type. Application of this fuel borne technology for emissions reductions in mining equipment offers significant benefits.

From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. "Quebec Cartier Mining operates a pelletizing plant in Port-Cartier, QC. Grinding, agglomeration and pellets induration are the three main steps in the preparation of iron oxide pellets. In 1998, following different recommendations, the company increased the speed of one of its ball mill in order to increase the grinding efficiency of the machine. As expected, the increased speed lead to an increase of the power draught, which did not produce the expected increase of fineness of grind, neither its allows to increase the mill throughput. The change of behaviour of the mill could hardly be understood by comparison of discharge size distribution at initial and modified mill rotation speed. On the other hand, the use of the selection function from a population balance model provides an insight of the changes that occurred in the mill. This paper reviews the various steps required for the estimation of a grinding mill selection function. Results of the calibration to Quebec Cartier grinding mills show that the increase in the mill speed leads to higher rate of breakage of coarse particles, at the expenses of less efficient breakage of medium and fine size particles. In the case of the studied mill, breakage of coarse particles was probably not the critical step of the mill operation. INTRODUCTIONOre size reduction is the major energy consumption step in any mineral processing operations (Austin et al., 1984). Size reduction is required to either liberate valuable minerals from the gangue minerals in which they are imbedded, or to increase the specific surface of the ground material. Plant engineers continuously face the challenge to find grinding machines, operating conditions or grinding circuit flowsheet configurations that could improve the size reduction process at lower energy or m6dia consumption."

Wide variation in the nature of the coal seams and the surrounding rock mass of the Indian coalfields and very little information about the associated stress fields were observed to be the major hurdles in the straight forward application of a continuous miner (CM) based mechanised depillaring approach. Due to various techno-economic reasons, a considerably large number of coal seams have been developed and are standing on pillars in India. The development of pillars is done as per Indian coal mines regulation, which results in pillars of relatively large size. In fact, the large size of the pillars provides stiff natural support to control caving of the massive overlying strata. However, the size of these pillars is not conducive for the single pass pillar stripping technique and, therefore, there is a need for pillar splitting before pillar extraction/retreating. Splitting of the pillar may reduce the competency/stiffness of the pillar, which creates a chance of overriding during final extraction below a massive roof stratum. This paper first discusses the existing coal mining scenario in India followed by a brief presentation of geo-technical details of pillar extraction at the three sites where a CM has been introduced for depillaring/pillar retreating in the country to date. Based on past rock mechanics experiences with conventional depillaring faces, stability issues of the pillars, fenders, and stumps in and around the depillaring face are discussed. This may prove to be an important factor in the success of future CM faces. It is recognized that the application of the modern strata movement monitoring techniques may improve operation safety by providing valuable qualitative and quantitative information that can be used to improve the design of modern concepts like roof bolt based breaker line support during pillaring.

Arguably, one of the most significant technological breakthroughs that had been experienced during the period when British Coal was the major coalmine operating company in the UK, the use of rockbolts as principal support in underground roadways brought with it the need to re-assess the technical knowledge, management controls and legislative frameworks associated with the support of mine workings. Following a major roof fall in a roadway supported principally using rockbolts in which fatalities occurred, the process of the design of rockbolted support and the systems and procedures that had been put in place to control its use in the UK were further reviewed. The paper discusses the outcome of these reviews, and how the incident initiated a major new interest in strata control research in the UK against the background of the fragmentation of the ownership of the mines following the sale of the former British Coal assets at the end of 1994, together with the proposed introduction of new strata control legislation in 1996.

Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

A heavy-mineral deposit about 1.6 kilometers (I mile) in length and averaging about three meters (10 feet) in thickness is exposed approximately130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert County, Colorado near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium Ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet, and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan, and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Georgia. Thus, Titanium Ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late Cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.
