Photoelastic, wire resistance, and borehole-deformation gages were used to measure the in situ strains when an outcropping Black Hand Sandstone Formation in Hocking State Forest, Hocking County, Ohio, was overcored to stress-relieve the surrounding sandstone. Strains transmitted to the photo-elastic gage did not produce isochromatic patterns suitable for quantitative analysis. Strain readings from the wire resistance gage indicated tensile-strain loading during overcoring; readings from the strain-gage bridges in the borehole-deformation gage indicated compressive-strain relaxation during overcoring. The magnitude and orientation of the computed stress fields obtained from both gages were comparable when the corresponding tensile and compressive elastic moduli were applied. Stresses computed from deformation and resistance gages at depths to 5 feet showed the maximum stresses to range from 1.042 to 2.121 times greater than the minimum stresses. The bearings of principal stresses calculated from the deformation gage readings varied between N 61° E and N 83° E; the wire resistance strain gage bearing computations varied between N 68° E and N 82° E. Measurements of in situ strain in sandstone were shown to have promise but to require further development in field technique that could likely be achieved through experience.

Finsch Mine is a kimberlite diamond mine located at Lime Acres in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine was founded in 1961 and started surface mining in 1964. Underground production commenced in 1990 using a modified blast-hole open stoping method for the mining of Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Block 4 is currently being mined as a block cave. The process of identifying and optimizing a method to mine the Block 5 orebody started in 1991, and in 2006 incline caving was identified as being technically feasible. This paper aims to document the process employed in developing this method by the Block 5 prefeasibility team as well as discuss the technical challenges encountered during this process. The paper commences with a history of Finsch Mine and highlights the complex geology and threat of sidewall failure that prompted the decision to use block caving as the mining method for Block 4. A literature study of mines that implemented mining methods upon which the incline cave was conceptualized is then presented. These practices were then used to form the basis for the designs on which the initial geotechnical modelling was done and built upon through an iterative process of modelling and design changes. The ventilation of the mining area, initial productivity simulation results, and the applicability of automation and comminution processes in the incline cave are also presented. The paper concludes with an investigation into some of the challenges of the mining method, and shows that that incline caving is a technical option available for further investigation in determining the optimal mining method to be employed at Block 5, Finsch Diamond Mine. The methane content of virgin bituminous coalbed can now be measured accurately in the field with exploration core samples from vertical boreholes. The gas content of the coal per unit weight can be used either to design a mine ventilation system or to determine if degasification of the coalbed will be necessary before mining, and to determine the gas resources in the coalbed. The equipment necessary to conduct the test costs less than $50. The gas content of the coal in place in the ground is determined by summing the gas lost from coring, gas measured during desorption, and the residual gas in the coal. Upon removal from the borehole, the core sample is placed in an airtight container and desorbed for several weeks until the desorption rate is below 0.05 cm3/g for 5 consecutive days. The gas lost from the core while it was being cored and the residual gas are estimated by a new graphical method. The amount of gas remaining depends upon whether the coal is friable or blocky. Friability appears to relate to the depth of the sample below the surface, fixed carbon percentage, Hardgrove grindability index, and proximity to tectonic disturbance. Friable coals emit nearly 96 pct of the total gas during desorption whereas a blocky coal emits only 60 pct of its total gas. Coalbeds that are ill defined as to their blocky or friable nature must be tested in the laboratory for unambiguous analysis.

"In 2011, a site study indicated that the application of Honeywell’s Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (MPC) to the Goldex processing facility would provide significant opportunities for improvement. Grinding MPC was implemented in the SAG Mill in June 2015. This pilot application, called Phase 1, featured one of the first Multivariable Predictive Controllers to be installed in a Canadian mineral processing plant. Since the implementation of MPC, gold recovery from the gravity circuit has increased. MPC contributed to a decrease in flotation feed particle size (120 to 112 µm) and an increase in the SAG feed tonnage (8.5% increase). MPC also increased and stabilized the % solids of the SAG feed, which can have an impact on cost reduction (mechanical maintenance). Additionally, MPC increased productivity, providing grinding operators with more time to perform other tasks. Further anticipated benefits include the standardization of the grinding circuit operation from one team to the next, thereby minimizing circuit disturbances resulting from different operating philosophies. This paper will discuss the advanced control project development and justification, the technology and rapid implementation process, the performance results and the benefits obtained.IntroductionGoldex is an underground mine located near Val-d’Or that is owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM). Between 2008 and 2011, mining focused on the Goldex Extension Zone (GEZ). In 2011, the project was halted due to geotechnical problems; operations ceased until late 2013. Goldex operations resumed in September 2013 with the M and E zones, for which there were 0.7M gold ounces of proven and probable reserves, 2.1M ounces of measured and indicated resources and 1.2M ounces of inferred resources, totalizing 4M ounces. Life expectancy was extended until 2024."

Sendo aplicado o método clássico comumente utilizado para análise desses resultados e o método utilizando da integral do pico de transformação de fase. Com base nas avaliações feitas, o método de integral por apresentar uma relação direta da fração de transformação demonstra-se mais eficaz para determinar o início e o fim da transformação por levar em consideração a forma do pico em função da trajetória de transformação.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

"The effective thermal conductivity (ETC) is one of the most important thermo-physical properties of porous media. Due to the lack of higher precision influence of temperature on thermal conductivity, we took 6 groups of experiments on rock samples (including igneous rock, sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock) under different operating temperatures from 20? to 50? by 7 acquisition points. The general equation of thermal conductivity drives the value of it increasing along with the decreases of the temperature. While in our experiments, it is easy to find a singularity among them for each sample. The experimental investigations we attempted to observe and interpret the alteration mechanism. According to the Heat Capacity Theory in solid state physics, this research gives the explanation about the “singularity” from 3 understanding of specific heat, average free path, and thermal conductivity. Our research divided the condition of the rock thermal conductivity into 3 different types. INTRODUCTION The effective thermal conductivity (ETC) is one of the most important thermo-physical properties of porous media(Huang & Han ,1988; Peierles ,1955). This parameter is necessary for analysis of heat transfer(Vaferi et al, 2014;Hans-Dieter & Rudiger,2003). It’s well known that a general equation for ?(T) was set by Sass et al. (1992) which based on the coupled effect of composition and temperature on the thermal conductivity(Jesse et al, 2013; Mongelli et al,1982).The equation was further successfully verified for other rock (Zumrud et al,2010;Abdulagatova et al,2009;Seipold& Huenges,1998).Thermal conductivity is also related to other physical proper ties of porous rock, such as thermal diffusivity, heat capacity(Brettmann et al,2011;Abuel-Naga et al,2008). It is well known that ETC and other thermo physical properties of rock materials are affected by various factors, such as temperature, pressure, mineralogical composition, porosity, stratification, size and shape of the components, and nature of pore fluid, etc. (Tiedje & Guo, 2014; Touloukian et al,1970).The understanding of heat transport processes still requires the knowledge of thermal properties of rocks."

"The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Nordic Ocean Resources AS, with support from Statoil ASA have carried out a project reviewing the knowledge about seabed mineral resources in Norway to identify and prioritize needs for further research and development.A special focus area in the project has been to increase the knowledge of possible massive sulfide mineralizations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This Ridge is a subsea mountain range which separates the Eurasian and the North American continental plates. In this area, seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) are formed from the volcanic and hydrothermal activities along the Ridge. A large part of the North-Atlantic Mid-Atlantic Ridge between Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen is located on the Norwegian shelf.Analysis and interpretations of multibeam data have been carried out by NTNU in cooperation with the Russian Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Oceans in order to disclose relevant areas for the formation of SMS deposits. This analysis has identified several promising areas."

The European Union (EU) completed a new directive 2002/44/EC1 called the Physical Agents Directive (PAD) that establishes action and limit values for hand-arm and whole body vibrations. The directive specifies that: “…workers shall not be exposed above the exposure ‘limit value’.” 1 and “…once the exposure action values … are exceeded, the employer shall establish and implement a programme of technical and/or organisational measures intended to reduce to a minimum exposure to mechanical vibration and the attendant risks…” 1 The PAD limit value is effective for new machines starting July 6, 2007 and for used machines by at least July 6, 2010. These requirements apply to the users of machines, but machine manufacturers will be challenged to provide machines and information to help the users comply with the directive. Caterpillar manufactures machines with the goal of enabling our customers to comply with all regulations dealing with health and safety. Caterpillar designs all of our machines to provide a safe, comfortable and productive work environment. This study was to determine if seat suspensions could provide a reduction in the vibration environment experienced by operators of Caterpillar mid sized (<50,000KG) Track Type Tractors Methods Seat manufacturers were asked to provide seat suspensions that provide improved isolation over and above current seat suspension. Each supplier was provided with ride profiles and was asked to demonstrate the vibration reduction on a shaker table. Two suppliers provided suspensions that were compared with the current seat suspension in a field study. Three full factorial experiments were conducted. The first experiment was to evaluate overall suspension performance for four operations. The second experiment was to determine the benefit of the adjustable vertical damper at three different levels and the third experiment was to determine the effect of the fore/aft and side/side isolators. Six operators were used for the study. Acceleration was measured at the seat base and at the operator seat pad. Both the transfer function and the ISO 2631 RMS ride values were used to determine the seat suspension’s effectiveness of isolating the operator from vibration. A structured questionnaire was used to determine the operators’ subjective assessment of the seat suspensions. Results There was significant operator-to-operator variability in the vertical direction (>35%), however there was little variability in the fore/aft and side/side direction based on seat base

The chief source of metallic iron for steelmaking in India, even today, as it is in most part of the world, is through blast furnace (BF) route. This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

Waste rock dumps, tailings impoundments and spent leach heaps are common features at mine sites. Many of these waste disposal facilities contain sulfide-rich minerals, which generate acid mine drainage (AMD) when they oxidize. Control of AMD can be achieved by removing one or more of the three essential components in the acid-generating process (sulfides, air, or water). One AMD prevention measure is to cap the waste with an engineered cover system to minimize the infiltration of water and diffusion of air into the system. Possible cover designs include: ? Earthen ?store-and-release? covers (also known as evapotranspiration (ET) or water balance covers), including capillary barriers. These covers require climate conditions where there is both modest to little rainfall and significantly greater evapotranspiration than precipitation, both annually and seasonally. ? Low-permeability compacted clay liners (CCLs) employing fine-grained soils typically compacted at wet of optimum water content. ? Geosynthetic composite covers, comprised of a geomembrane liner placed over and in direct contact with either a CCL or a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). These systems have been commonly used for base liners for leach pads as well as covers and base liners at municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills in the US for more than 20 years. Comparisons of these different cover systems, both in terms of performance and cost, are presented later in this paper. First, however, a review of the typical mine closure approaches, and the possible rationale behind them, is warranted.

In many practical situation where the LaModel program in used to analyze the mechanical response and failure of the mining environment, there are very few actual field measurement from the site available for deriving the appropriate input parameters. For coping with this typical lack of field data, this paper presents some recommended calibration techniques derived from on an in-depth understanding of the laminated model formulation and from many years of experience applying LaModel to practical situations. For each of the critical input parameters (rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength) in LaModel, a specific calibration technique is recommended and presented along with the justification for the technique and some appropriate derivations/equations for assistance. It is hoped that this frank discussion of recommended calibration techniques can help novice LaModel user develop better models and can initiate a discussion among rock mechanics experts on how to improve upon the presented techniques.

Blasting is the most important activity in the mining industry, the world over. It is a well known fact that only part of the explosive energy gets utilized in causing the actual rock fragmentation. The rest of it gets converted into blast-induced ground vibrations and noise. Though blast vibrations cannot be totally eliminated, it is possible to minimize them by optimization of blast parameters. This paper highlights various in-house efforts put forth by the author towards site specific blast optimization and the monitoring of blast vibrations. It also deals with the prediction curves developed by regular regression analysis for the prediction of ‘blast vibrations’, ‘peak particle velocity’, ‘safe charge’ for various blasts.

A study of the accessory opaque iron-titanium oxide minerals of the Oiles Complex, central Australia, was an Important complement to an investigation of the magnetic properties of the Complex. These minerals constitute no more than 10 per cent of the rocks sampled, and generally less than 1 per cent of the ultramafic rocks (&quot;magnetite&quot; concentrations were not sampled for magnetic investigation).Titanomagnetite is the main opaque mineral present, although ilmenite exsolution has been widely developed. High-temperature oxidation of these produced mainly titanohematite, pseudobrookite and rutile. Both exsolution and high-temperature oxidation developed along specific crystallographic directions (along {111}), and in Irregular patches. Low-temperature oxidation is generally not well-developed, indicating the small degree of weathering in the rocks sampled.Although the Oiles Complex is layered, no apparent overall preferred orientation of the iron-titanium oxide minerals was observed, other than crystallographically controlled alignment of very fine grains within pyroxene crystals. Other textural features of the opaque oxides are restricted to symplectic intergrowths mainly with the ferromagnesian silicates.

When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01&apos;spa&apos;i&apos;, which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &amp;c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as&apos; they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak &apos;of vughs as &quot;bugs,&quot; and oxides as &quot;ox hides,&quot; and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word &quot; greenstone &quot; for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.

The exhausted Santa Barbara open pit mine (Tuscany, Italy), owned by the main electric power company in Italy (ENEL S.p.A,) extracted lignite as a fuel for the Santa Barbara thermoelectric power plant. The mining activity led to the excavation of a wide slope (with maximum height of 200 m and a planar extension of about 1300 m x 500 m) in the Shale Limestone Chaotic Complex (SLCC) (Figure 1). Since the beginning of its excavation the slope underwent rotational landslides and diffuse instability phenomena. From a geotechnical point of view the SLCC represents a typical bimrock (block-in-matrix rock) (Medley 1994, Medley 2002, Medley 2007) characterized by a mixture of a highly sheared, scaly-fabric, clayey matrix and calcareous blocks ranging from a few millimetres to tens of metres in size. Since the geometrical properties of blocks (grain-size distribution, shape, orientation and volumetric proportion) have been proved to influence the mechanical behaviour of bimrocks (Lindquist & Goodman 1994, Goodman & Ahlgren 2000, Kim et al. 2004, Sonmez et al. 2006), the aim of the present study is to investigate the geometrical properties of calcareous blocks in order to properly characterize the mechanical behaviour of the SLCC bimrock and to further assess the stability of the slope. Block size-distribution and shape were investigated by means of advanced image analysis techniques of SLCC pictures taken in the field. Geostatistical semivariograms and variographic maps were also used in order to investigate the anisotropy of block spatial distribution. Finally, in-situ large sized sieving tests were carried out to investigate the volumetric block proportion within the clayey matrix.
