It is a quite challenging objective to aim at covering in one paper the most recent evolution in piling and deep foundations technologies. This report has to be understood within the limits of the session 2b. It will therefore concentrate on the technological evolution of deep foundation techniques, addressing design issues only when directly related to execution aspects. For the same reason, it will not address the related codes, as a separate session of this conference is specifically dedicated to this topic. Monitoring and deep excavations being covered in other sessions, they will only be addressed when clearly relevant. We will try to show, from a practical viewpoint what are the main changes and the most exciting or critical issues over the last years, as they appear from the topics addressed in the literature or in the papers published in this session of the conference. As the paper mostly intends to explain trends and critical topics, it cannot be exhaustive, neither can it give the full description of the case studies. The author invites the reader to read the full papers, for a more complete description. We have divided our report in three main topics: Piling, soil improvement and treatment and retaining walls. Anchors and tie-backs will not be treated, neither tunneling.

Geostatistics was initially developed in the mining sector, but has been extended to other geoscience applications, including forestry, environmental science, soil science, and petroleum science and engineering. This paper presents methods, workflows, and pitfalls in using geostatistics for hydrocarbon resource modelling and evaluation. Examples are presented of indicator variogram analysis of categorical variables, lithofacies modelling by sequential indicator simulation and hierarchical workflow, porosity modelling by kriging and stochastic simulation, collocated cokriging for integrating seismic data, and collocated cosimulation for modelling porosity and permeability relationships. These methods together form a systematic approach that can be effectively used for modelling natural resources.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. "Anglo American operates 18 Weir GEHO piston diaphragm pumps (PD) in the two pump stations of the 52-km (32-mile) long Minas Rio iron ore concentrate pipeline. The pipeline is designed to transport 26.5 Mt/a (29.2 million stpy) of concentrate from the mine to the export terminal at the coast.During the commissioning of the pipeline in the fall of 2014, high pressure pulsation levels were experienced, with peak-to-peak levels as high as 20 bar. Based on pressure readings it was concluded that hydraulic resonances were present in the system, which were excited by the third and sixth harmonic of the flow pulsation generated by the pumps.Based on this observation, Weir Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO PD slurry pumps, recommended installing a phase shift controller that controls the phase shift between the crankshafts of the individual pumps, thereby minimizing the effect of the hydraulic resonances.GEHO piston diaphragm pumps and pressure pulsation analysisPiston diaphragm pumps are used worldwide to transport abrasive and/or aggressive slurries against high discharge pressures in the mining, mineral processing and power industries. The basic operating principle of a piston diaphragm pump is shown in Fig. 1.A crankshaft is driven by an external electric motor via a gearbox. The crank mechanism transfers the rotating motion of the crankshaft into a reciprocating motion of the piston. The piston displaces a hydraulic fluid, called the propeling liquid, which displaces an elastic rubber diaphragm. When the piston moves to the right, the pressure in the pump chamber drops below the suction pressure and the nonreturn valve on the suction side will open, allowing the pumped fluid to flow into the pump chamber. When the piston moves to the left, the fluid is compressed, and when the pump chamber pressure rises above the pipeline pressure, the nonreturn valve on the discharge side will open allowing a displacement of fluid into the discharge line. The main objective of the diaphragm is to isolate the piston and the drive mechanism from the abrasive and/or aggressive fluid and create a hermetic seal between the pumped fluid and the ambient environment. Piston diaphragm pumps as shown in Fig. 1 are among the largest positive displacement pumps in the world and have been produced with stroke volumes of up to 100 L (26 gal) per pump chamber for flow rates up to 800 m3/h, discharge pressures up to 250 bar and hydraulic outputs over 2 MW per unit (van Rijswick et al., 2010)."

"Circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) combustion technology has been around for over 40 years, but over the last 6 years it has been commercially demonstrated at the 500 MWe scale at the Lagisza plant located in Bedzin, Poland. The CFB at the Lagisza plant has unique first-of-a-kind design features, such as vertical-tube supercritical steam technology and a lowtemperature flue-gas heat extraction that allows the plant to achieve high plant efficiencies of over 43% (net lower heating value). Another unusual feature for a coal power plant is that this plant meets all its atmospheric emission permit levels without any post-combustion de-NOx or de-SOx equipment such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or flue-gas desulphurization (FGD).CFB clean coal power technology is entering the utility power sector just in time to help deal with declining quality in internationally traded coals and to promote the large-scale use of economic, low-quality domestic fuels. Owing to the very attractive price discounts, growing supplies of low-quality Indonesian coals are outpacing the supply of high-quality Australian, Russian, and US coals. In Germany and Turkey, the use of domestic lignites for power production provides a secure and economic energy solution while creating domestic jobs.Conventional pulverized coal (PC) boilers will have trouble accepting these off-specification coals because of their narrow fuel specifications; they typically call for heating values above 5500 kcal/kg. This limitation is not an issue for CFB technology because of its ability to burn the worst and best of coals with heating values ranging from 3900 to 8000 kcal/kg.This paper provides an outlook for future coal supply, quality, and price, as well as a review of the technical and economic benefits of CFB technology firing low-quality fuels for utility power generation."

El presente trabajo describe el comportamiento estructural y mineralización del estaño-cobre en la mina San Rafael, Puno. En este sentido, las pizarras de la formación Sandia del Ordovisco Superior, por metamorfismo de contacto con el intrusivo, han sido transformadas a hornfels, que junto a las cuarcitas se presentan algunas veces como una cubierta superficial sobre el intrusivo. Asimismo, los intrusivos y las pizarras son favorables para la mineralización de estaño, aunque los cuerpos del mineral son más definidos y persistentes en el intrusivo.

Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

In carrying out the provisions as set forth by an Act of Congress (36 Stat. 369) approved May 16, 1910, effective July 1, 1910, and the amended Act of February 25, 1913, (37 Stat. 681), the Bureau of Mines, among other activities, conducts inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining with a view to improving health conditions and increasing safety and disseminates the general information gained by these studies. Through the medium of these publications, the causes as well as the methods that have been found most satisfactory in combating undesirable conditions are brought to the attention of the mining industry. This bulletin describes health and safety reports that have been published for the period July 1, 1955, through June 30, 1961. Technical Paper 705 issued in 1948 contains a listing of all Bureau of Mines publications dealing with health and safety in the mineral and allied industries from 1910 through 1946; Bulletin 558 contains a bibliography of such reports that were issued from January 1947 through June 1955.

The 1,380 m (4,200 ft) long New Crystal Springs Bypass (Polhemus)Tunnel (NCSBT) will replace the existing Crystal Springs Bypass Pipeline. This tunnel project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.3 billion capital improvement program to repair and seismically upgrade their aging pipelines, tunnels, reservoirs and dams that provide drinking water to more than 2.4 million customers in the San Francisco Bay Area. This paper describes the development of the tunnel alignment and design, and the complex ground conditions of the Franciscan Mélange. Of particular interest is the challenge of tunneling with a possible downhill grade of 3%, a rigorous environmental process and incorporating the lessons learned from 1960s construction of the adjoining Crystal Springs Bypass Tunnel.

Gippsland has perhaps the most colourful history of exploration of any area in Australia. Hydrocarbons were first discovered in the Gippsland Basin in 1924 when a water well at Lakes Entrance encountered oil and gas shows. In 1942, the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments, in an effort to supplement a wartime oil shortage, sank a shaft near this well and produced 8000 barrels of low gravity oil up to 1956, when the field was abandoned. A total of 64 shallow wells had been drilled in the Lakes Entrance area by that time. Elsewhere in the onshore Gippsland Basin, 30 wells were drilled from 1925 to 1941. In 1960 BHP Ltd was granted an exploration permit covering much of the offshore area of the Gippsland Basin. Esso Australia Ltd joined BHP in 1964 and drilled the Barracouta-1 gas discovery in 1965. Since then over 100 exploration and appraisal wells have been drilled in the basin resulting in the discovery to date of some 3.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 8.8 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas (Current remaining recoverable reserves are 906 million barrels of oil and 5.7 TCF of gas). Exploration in the offshore areas is actively continuing today and new discoveries are still being made.

The minerals industry consumes billions of dollars in raw materials, equipment, tools, services and chemicals. The industry, though, has turned overmuch of the research and development (R&D) for these products to manufacturers and suppliers. Now the industry and its suppliers must decide how much R&D the mining industry should be responsible for and what role the suppliers should play. Promoting R&D As a result of the current environment in the mining and minerals industry, there has been a substantial decrease in R&D. Depressed prices, stagnant growth, cost cutting and rationalization are evident.

"The deposition of tailings under water is considered to be one of the most environmentally promising and potentially cost effective methods to reduce or eliminate acid mine drainage from tailings. One of the concerns of subaqueous deposition has been that metals may leach into the cover waters, thereby increasing aqueous metal concentrations to higher than acceptable limits. This potential was seen to have an even greater possibility for impact when the tailings are deposited under acidic lake water.The following paper summarizes the results of subaqueous tailings pilot column test work conducted to determine the effects of subaqueously deposited tailings on lake water and tailings pore water. Two types of tailings were tested: high sulphide tailings (pyrrhotite concentrate), and low sulphide tailings (end of pipe slime tailings).Data was collected from five columns over a 13 month test period. The results indicated that a stagnant I 000 mm water cover was capable of maintaining the underlying tailings in a reducing condition. The upwards diffusion of pore water resulted in a pH increase in the waters overlying the thickened pyrrhotite tailings and the pyrrhotite tailings with a shallow cover of substrate. A conductivity gradient between the tailings and the water cover caused a diffusion of salts upwards into the overlying water column. Precipitation noted at the tailings water interface may be related to the precipitation of ferric oxyhydroxides, which resulted in a decrease in Fe concentrations noted in the water cover. Other metal concentrations did not exhibit significant increases in the water cover. A sulphate concentration gradient between the tailings and the water cover may have caused the diffusion of SQ4 from the tailings into the water cover."

The Rosebery and Hercules mines, situated in the Rosebery-Williamsford district in western Tasmania, have a history of production dating back to 1896-7, although full scale production did not commence until 1936, following the development of a satisfactory process of selective flotation (Hall, Cottle, Rosenhain and McGhie, 1953). The mineral composition of the Rosebery zinc-lead ores was first described in detail by Stillwell (1934). The Hercules ore is generally similar, but as yet no descriptions of it have beenpublished.Since Dr. Stillwell's paper appeared, the management of the Rosebery and Hercules mines has from time to time submitted a number of interesting mineral specimens to C.S.I.R.O. Mineragraphie Investigations. Examination of these specimens brought to light eight minerals, some relatively uncommon, not previously recognized in these ores.They are cassiterite, molybdenite, stannite, electrum, meneghinite, boulangerite, pyrargyrite and pyrrhotite. Some of the specimens are also rich in tetrahedrite and gold. In addition each of the other ore minerals described by Stillwell, viz. pyrite, sphalerite, galena, bournonite, chaleopyrite and arsenopyrite, was detected in one or more of the specimens examined during the present study. The principal gangue minerals were found to be quartz, manganiferous carbonate, sericite and barite, agreeing closely with the observations of Stillwell.The present study was based on the examination of the following eight specimens.

This report describes the loading and transportation practices employed at the zinc-lead mines of The Eagle-Picher Co., Jo Daviess County, Ill., and Lafayette County, Wis. The report also gives a brief history of the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc-lead district and the operations of the company in the area. The diesel-powered, rubber-tired loading and haulage equipment is described and illustrated from the operational point of view only, and an analysis is made of the materials-handling system without going into health and safety Factors. The costs per ton of the various components of mechanical loading, underground haulage, underground crushing, and hoisting for fiscal year 1960 are tabulated.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) plays a fundamental role in the national and local economies of resource-rich countries in Africa. As such, more effort must be geared towards fostering this type of economic activity to sustain livelihoods in rural communities. Across Africa, efforts to operationalize ASM based on a sustainable development framework have been quite tedious and often ineffective. This is because most of these frameworks lacked context and an understanding of the continuum from the artisanal through small-scale and up to the junior miner, grouped under the general term ?ASM?. Driven by the need to contextualize some of the definitional issues in this niche sector, and gain a clearer understanding of their peculiar challenges, this paper aims to contribute to the debate on ASM by considering two of Africa?s resource-rich countries ? Ghana and South Africa. Since South Africa has made greater inroads in protecting the interests of small-scale miners, we thus draw comparisons from both countries? approach to ASM, outline the lessons learnt, and provide recommendations regarding the ways forward.

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. Utilizing a very large database from a mined-out area on a South African gold mine, the relative efficacy of a method to mitigate the smoothing effect introduced by the algorithmic constraints imposed by kriging was investigated. Smoothing effects arising from limited data availability are differentiated from the smoothing arising from the application of estimation algorithms. Very little can be done to ameliorate smoothing of estimates because of too little data, barring additional drilling or sampling. However, the smoothing effects resulting from the kriging process are shown to be mitigated by use of an alternative algorithm. The primary criterion in the development of the new algorithm was to avoid re-introducing conditional bias. This paper examines firstly the smoothing effects introduced into estimates via the kriging covariance matrix, secondly the process for ameliorating the smoothing effect, and finally it uses a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new algorithm on a very large database. The database was used to introduce a 60 m by 60 m drilling pattern which in turn was used to model the semi-variogram and produce 30 m by 30 m kriged block estimates. The follow-up database was then re-introduced (roughly 5 m by 5 m grid spacing) and averaged into 30 m by 30 m blocks to provide a direct comparison with the initial estimates. In this way the extent of smoothing and accuracy of the estimates before and after the corrections was tested.
