The present progress report covers studies in the direct production of iron and steel . The experimental work was carried out in cooperation with the universities of California , Minnesota , and Missouri . Complete reports will be published when funds are available .

BARCUS AND SONS, INC. PROJECT PROFILE: 108-10 in. diameter AugerPiles installed to an approximate depth of 32 ft. Piles were installed through Stiff Clayey Fill and Medium-Dense Sands to Decomposed Shale. Piles were drilled to a refusal criteria of 1 ft. / 3 min. Piles were installed using a Barcus Mantis AugerPile rig which is large enough to install piles 25 to 50 ft. long outdoors. The Mantis is also ideal for indoor and low overhead installations. On top of being extremely versatile, the Mantis is also very economical to mobilize. The existing structure is supported on H-Piles. The AugerPiles were furnished and installed for less than the material price of the H-Piles. Design loads were under 40 tons which eliminated the need for a load test. AugerPiles were selected for minimal vibration, limited noise, and economy.

The Birmingham Coal and Coke – Knight Mine is a single seam coal mine in central Alabama. As pit development progressed in 2013, concerns over increasing vibration levels resulted in modifications to the blasting program that inhibited shot size and coal recovery. By January 2014, while still over 1,400 feet (427 m) from the regulatory seismograph, vibration levels climbed above 70% of the mine permit limit, even with triple decking of holes and reduced burden and spacing. At this time the decision was made to commit to the use of signature waveform analysis and precision programmable electronic detonators to minimize vibration and maximize the amount of coal that could be recovered before vibration levels reached permit limits.

This report focuses on the U.S. Bureau of Mines research regarding desensitization and malfunction of delay detonators and cap-sensitive explosives. Delay blasting in underground coal generates tremendous shock waves and rifting forces that fracture and heave coal. The shock waves from charge explosions radiate outward in all directions through the coal, impacting neighboring charges with later delays. The impact phenomena have debilitating effects, causing degrees of reduced charge performance ranging from misfires or weak detonations to out-of-sequence detonations. Impaired charges react poorly, fracture less coal, and produce fumes with higher toxicity. Coal-mine, underwater, and simulator tests were conducted to more thoroughly understand the shock damage mechanism. Recently the U.S. Bureau of Mines partially resolved the malfunction problem by demonstrating the feasibility of formulating a rugged explosive. This rugged cap-sensitive candidate passed the requisite tests for certifying an underground coal-mine explosive. With natural aging the formulation rapidly lost initiation sensitivity. The charge formulation had to be rebatched to finish the testing and therefore could not be certified.

As in many other industries, such as construction and agriculture, overhead electric power lines are a serious hazard at mining and mining-related operations. Even when excluding injuries that occur during electrical maintenance work, over one fourth of electrical fatalities in the mining industry are due to accidental overhead line contacts, and for each fatality nearly two serious non-fatal injuries occur due to such contacts. In incidents involving high-reaching mobile equipment, many of the victims touched the equipment after the fact, unaware that the machine frame had become energized by the line contact. MSHA data for accidents involving overhead power line contacts in the mining industry between 1980 and 1997 reveal that in 57% of the cases personnel were unaware of the accidental line contact until after one or more workers touched the equipment or a hoisted load and were injured. The situation is similar in the construction industry, where according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) data at least 20% of such victims are unaware of the line contact. This suggests that a device that alerts workers when a power line has been contacted could help prevent many of these injuries. Such a device would not prevent power line contacts, yet if widely employed could yield a significant reduction in the number of resulting injuries. Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are attempting to develop such a device. The approach being investigated is based on measuring electric current flow to ground through a machine during a line contact. The specific technique being tested involves the diversion of some part of this current through a shunt cable mounted on board the machine, to provide a point at which to install a current sensor. Experiments thus far indicate that this approach is feasible. Ongoing research is better defining electric current flow through mobile equipment, refining techniques for measuring this current, and identifying factors that could limit the effectiveness of the proposed alarm.

Within a 30-mile radius of Sudbury, Ontario, the Ontario division of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., operates nine underground mines and two open pits. Prior to 1966, ore removal from the underground workings was mainly by scraping, using 125-hp electric slushers in blasthole and caving mining, and 30-hp or less air-operated slushers for fill- method mining. The development and evaluation of low-profile, diesel-powered front-end loaders, designed specifically for underground operations, was followed with keen interest during the period 1964-1965.

"INTRODUCTIONInternational Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited operates two potash mine/refinery complexes near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Annual production of approximately 4.2 million tons is sold in the United States and overseas in five grades according to size and quality.Ore grading 25% K2 0 equivalent is mined from a horizontal bed by continuous boring machines, crushed, and hoisted at 8 inches. The refinery operation consists of the eight basic steps shown in Figure 1. Particle sizes handled are similar to those experienced in other forms of mineral beneficiation: 8 inches to 100 mesh. The ore is crystalline and particles are angular. Fortunately the major mineral constituents, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), demonstrate relatively low hardness at 2 to 2.5.Therefore, while simple abrasion must be acknowledged, it is not a major problem except, of course, in circuits carrying magnetite.Corrosion, as represented by the classic equations of Figure 2, occurs in all its various forms."

"SynopsisSeismically active mines generally experience an increase in seismic hazard due to rock mass instability following blasting. Re-entry protocols commonly include measures to limit the spatial and temporal exposure of personnel to increased seismic hazard induced by blasting. The management of periods of increased seismic hazard requires the development of re-entry protocols for a unique mining environment. Identifying mining conditions that may result in significant seismicity following blasting relies on retrospective analysis, which is often focused on seismicity occurring within a certain period after blasting and within a certain radius of the blast in the broader context of site-specific experience.The analysis of seismicity without considering blasting times and locations allows for the relationship between seismicity and blasting to be investigated without prior assumptions concerning dependency. To achieve independent analysis, seismicity that is clustered in space and time (referred to as a seismic sequence) must be identified by assessment utilizing only seismic parameters. An automated algorithm is implemented that assesses the timing, location, and quantity of seismicity to identify seismic sequences, represented by the time of the first event and mean location of all events in the sequence.The relationship between sequences and blasts is assessed by calculating the distance and time from each sequence to the closest blast in space and time. Establishing an independent classification between sequences and blasting provides insight into the unique cases where seismic sequences are remote and/or delayed with respect to blasts and identifies cases when sequences exhibit a weak relation to blasting. The nature of seismic responses to blasting has direct implications for the management of the increased seismic hazard associated with seismic sequences.The approach presented in this study contributes to the management of seismic hazard by providing empirical support for the relationship between seismic sequences and blasting. These relationships indicate the portions of sequences that can and cannot be practically managed using tactical approaches. Furthermore, the analysis of sequences reveals the nature and evolution of rock mass responses to blasting. These results have implications for the extent of spatial or temporal re-entry restrictions required for the optimal management of time-dependent rock mass response to mining."

This report summarizes the results from the first year of an anticipated multiphase program to develop improved coal mining equipment which utilize the CAVIJET? cavitating water jet method. This laboratory parametric study demonstrated the advantages of cavitating jets over non­cavitating jets in cutting coal, by producing comparable slot depths at one-fifth of the operating pressure, at better than one-half of the spe­cific energy. These results suggest that CAVIJET-augmented mining devices can be developed with compact, low-pressure pumps. Thus, CAVIJET should be capable of operating with safer, lighter support equipment, while providing all of the advantages (reduction of dust and sparks, reduced damage to cutters) of conventional hydraulic mining methods.

Detailed measurements made at a test section adjacent to a deep braced cut and other published data are combined to illustrate the limitations of the common methods of predicting movements associated with excavations in soft to medium clay. While past performance data can be used to estimate expected responses before construction in many cases, actual wall and soil deformations throughout construction can only be estimated using finite element procedures. Success of such analyses depends equally upon considering all aspects of construction that induce strains in adjacent soil, such as wall installation, excavation and bracing sequence, and time, and adequately modeling soil stress-strain behavior. Even when these two criteria are met, soil deformations can not be predicted adequately when strain levels exceed those that produce peak shear stress.

Full scale load tests are frequently performed immediately prior to deep foundation construction to verify the design assumptions. Occasionally, load tests are performed during design development and applied to the final design for critical and non-redundant structures. We believe that full scale load tests can be very valuable and economical for projects, especially in a geologic environment where the record of full scale load testing is very limited or non-existent. The load testing for the Utah Transit Authority?s Airport Light Rail Trax project provides an example of the advantages of a load test in design development. The savings realized by the owner was in excess of $800 thousand dollars.

Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. Now, coal marketing must be recognized in its "true leadership role," Daniel said. Marketing people must know when to use spot sales to balance production objectives and maintain cost-effective-

Kriging is an interpolation technique for predicting unobserved responses at target locations from observed responses at specified locations. Kriging predictors are best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and the precision of the BLUP is assessed by the mean square prediction error (MSPE), commonly known as the kriging variance. Both the BLUP and the MSPE depend on the covariance function describing the spatial correlation between locations and on specific parameters. The parameters are usually treated as known, whereas in practice they invariably have to be estimated and the empirical BLUP (that is, the EBLUP) so obtained. The empirical or estimated mean square prediction error (EMSPE), or the so called ?plug-in? kriging variance estimator, underestimates the true kriging variance of the EBLUP, at least in general. In this paper five estimators for the kriging variance of the EBLUP are considered and compared by means of a simulation study in which a Gaussian distribution for the responses, an exponential structure for the covariance function, and three levels of spatial correlation ? weak, moderate, and strong ? are adopted. The Prasad-Rao estimator obtained using restricted or residual maximum likelihood (REML) is recommended for moderate and strong spatial correlation and the Kacker-Harville estimator for weak correlation in the random fields.

This paper discusses the technical issues and stakeholder collaborative processes which resulted in achieving a balance between the reclamation of abandoned mine sites, providing affordable housing, and preservation of open space at the French Gulch Site. Through this process, it was discovered that mine site reclamation would need to be conducted in conjunction with two priorities for community sustainable development: providing affordable housing for locals who work in the resort town of Breckenridge, and open space preservation. It was found that conducting these activities concurrently would result in providing resources necessary to complete mine site reclamation. The first phase of the affordable housing development is almost completed. This development resulted in redevelopment of mining impacted lands and was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a National Smart Growth Award in 2002.Negotiations are also underway to preserve the remaining 1,800 acres of land held by the mining company as open space. This transaction will in turn provide resources to address water quality issues associated with mine discharges.

The southern African coal industry is facing the reality that coal reserves are becoming deeper and harder to mine than before. Alternative visions need to be considered to offset the impact of these challenges on productivity, cost, and profitability. One of the main challenges is to maintain current production levels under more difficult conditions, and improve productivity where conditions allow. There is a need to move from the reactive event-based management system towards the more adaptable and flexible process-based management system. This paper focuses on underground coal mining, but the principles are also applicable to other commodities and mining methods. This paper is based on research undertaken by the personnel from Mining Consultancy Services Pty Ltd (MCS) on trends in the underground coal mining sector, as well as practical experience over a period of 16 years in the field of electronic monitoring of mining machinery and productivity optimization.

A pilot plant was constructed for the low temperature carbonization of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal at the rate of 300 lb/hr. The design was based on an entrained state carbonizer developed by Parry and D.S. Bureau of Mines co-workers. Prior to delivery to the client, the plant was successfully operated over periods of several days duration.INTRODUCTIONIn September 1961, the Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (A.M.D.L.) was engaged by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) to design, construct and test an entrained state coal carbonizer with a capacity of 300 lb/hr of Wallarah (N.S.W.) coal. Char product was required within the specification 15·5 -I- 1 per cent volatile matter. The design was to be based on a pilot plant developed by Parry and others in the D.S. Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Denver, D.S.A. The method involved the carbonization of fine coal by entrainment with air in an externally heated reactor. The heat required for the carbonization of the coal was to be supplied to the bed both through the reactor walls, and also by internal combustion of products in the bed. Several D.S. Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations weFe used as the main guide to the physical layout and proportions of the plant. However, the individual units required detailed designing, before engineering drawings could be prepared and fabrication begun.A 10 ton sample of crushed Wallarah coal was used for preliminary testing of the plant. The first test run on the pilot plant was carried out in February, 1962. After some modification a second test of longer duration was conducted in August, 1962. This old and well-known method of determining silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, and because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a detemination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained. For this determination 1,115 mg. of standard metal are weighed and transferred to a glass-stoppered bottle, the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, and 100 cc. of a standard solution of NaCl run in. The bottle is then vigorously shaken and a measured portion of a decimal salt solution added, and again shaken, if necessary. These operations are repeated until the silver is precipitated. Standard metal being 900 fine, 1,115 mg. should carry 1,003.5 mg. of silver, which is a convenient figure to work with.

Many people are familiar with the use of marine echo sounders which are used by fishermen to monitor water depth and locate schools of fish. Similar technology has recently been used in some West Australian mines to provide detailed maps of ore contacts and other geological structures. Whilst drillhole intersections provide details of the location of a contact at a point, echo sounding can be used to obtain a continuous profile of the contact. A series of profiles together with drillhole intersection data can be used to build a more accurate geological model than can be inferred from drillhole intersections alone. The benefits of this are more complete ore extraction, less dilution and the ability to make more informed financial decisions. This paper presents a case history which demonstrates the successful application of the technology.

In a previous paper the author showed that silver considerably delayed the recrystallisation of lead after cold work. The effect of antimony on the rate of recrystallisation of distorted lead was studied next, and the experiments performed, and the results obtained, are described in this paper. Electrolytic lead was used as a standard of comparison.It was also used to make the lead antimony alloys.This electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.It was prepared from commercial lead by fire refining, followed by electrolysis and finally by vacuum casting. The process was described in the previous paper and the description need not be repeated here. PREPARATION OF LEAD - ANTIMONY ALLOYS.The steps taken to procure pure antimony are outlined in the appendix. To make the lead antimony alloys a mother alloy was prepared thus:-A quantity of the antimony (it was received in the powdered form) was placed in a pyrex glass tube, which was closed at one end. The antimony was washed with hot hydrochloric acid (1: 1), then with more dilute acid, then with distilled water, and finally with absolute alcohol; it was dried by warming and evacu,ating the tube. The paper highlights development of tunneling methodology in the UK during the years 1990-2000 using the example of two major tunneling contracts where there solution of difficult tunneling problems during construction has benefited the industry as a whole. The paper deals with specific difficulties on two Contracts. The London Water Ring Main 80 kms (50 miles) long tunnel average internal diameter 2.54 m (9 ft4 in) and the Brighton Stormwater Tunnel 5.2 km (3.2 miles) long tunnel with an internal diameter of 6 m (19 ft 8 in). The results of human endeavour and technological innovations will demonstrate the giant strides made in tunneling methodology in the last decade of the 20th Century.
