Underground mining accidents in the USA in recent times have prompted the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to review emergency and tracking systems for underground mines. Several communication and tracking systems are available on the market and various systems have been installed in mines around the world. In addition, MSHA?s standard on Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) requires mines to comply with the final PEL of 160µg/m3 by May 20, 2008. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., Underground Division, has been in operation since 1995 and an extensive control and monitoring network, and a leaky feeder voice network is in place. Enhancements to the communication and control system are currently being implemented to include a PED emergency notification system, wireless LAN with tracking of personnel and equipment in the mine, and a ventilation control system that will use the tracking information and ventilation data to automate much of the mine ventilation system. Expected benefits from such a system would be enhanced communication with miners, emergency notification, location of miners and equipment, energy savings, improved ventilation control, and improved atmospheric conditions in the mine including reduction of diesel particulate matter (DPM).

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1·8-2·4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1°_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005°,035° and 115°.

Precast concrete segments have been used in sanitary sewer tunnel design for decades. Federal mandates (reduction in heavy metals and I & I), and system design changes (increased retention times) and other factors have exacerbated corrosion problems. In an effort to combat the ever-growing effect of microbiologically induced corrosion, owners, engineers, and designers have been specifying thin-film lining systems to protect precast concrete segments. These systems have compatibility and installation issues. Chemical additives or calcareous aggregates have been utilized in precast concrete, but have only proven to retard the rate of corrosion and do not eradicate the problem. Solid cast polymer segments are stronger than precast concrete, do not require linings or coatings, are impervious to ground water infiltration, and, above all, are inherently corrosion resistant through and through.

Conventional stoping in hard rock mining is largely considered an operational environment. This paper suggests that stoping falls within the realm of a project management environment typified by uncertainty, variation, and large numbers of interdependencies. Stoping was then equated to a micro-project with many simultaneous activities that had to be executed accurately using finite resources within limited shift durations in order to reach specific goals. Critical chain project management (CCPM) principles were applied to the stoping activities, and the results showed that the number of blasts per panel can be significantly increased by successfully moving the distribution of work as close as possible to the start of shift. Critical chain principles also assisted in facilitating re-focusing and teamwork among stoping crews as well as between day- and night-shift crews. The main recorded success was in managing inherent protective capacities/local contingencies/fat/buffers that are found in all projects. The impact on mine health and safety (MHS) was significant as individual operators and crews became convinced that they could perform all stoping tasks (activities) without compromising accuracy or speed.

Have technological advancements in underground coal mining driven people's skills to new highs or have the expanded skills of mining people driven the industry's technological advancements. Who knows? What we do know is that both our technology and our people have made meaningful and significant advancements. Overall, longwall systems continue to increase productivity and retreat faster. Globally, gate road development is the primary bottleneck in a longwall mine. The primary bottleneck in gate road development is roofbolting. Generally, roofbolting is the bottleneck in room and pillar operations as well. This paper will present an integrated manufacturer's (Joy Mining Machinery) vision of the future in comparison to current equipment performance. Particular emphasis will be placed on roofbolter technologies.

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context in which they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage such as nuclear power generation where international cooperationis eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit its mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. In longwall coal mines, estimation of roof strata condition, sequence of loading, and supporting requirements are of a high degree of importance, and they are directly related to production and safety. Also, a prediction of the initial caving distance is rather complicated to calculate, because there are many parameters that effect caving process?roof and floor strata conditions, thickness of immediate roof, depth of cover, excavation geometry, and magnitude, and direction of principal stresses. This paper presents the results of 3D numerical modeling of the initial caving mechanism using the finite difference code FLAC3D at the E1 longwall panel of the Parvade 1 underground mine located in the Tabas area in the central part of Iran. The initial caving distance obtained was 10.4 m. Also, the results of numerical modeling have been compared to the analytical methods, such as Peng?s method. The results show good agreement with each other.

A petrographic and microthermometric study of fluid inclusions in the Kentstown Granite, crosscutting quartz (VI) and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the granite and calcite+quartz (V 2) veins in the overlying sediments was performed on samples taken from the borehole. Comparisons of the type 1, type 2 and type 3 fluid inclusion populations recorded in the present study with those from other Irish Caledonian granites strongly suggest a similar fluid evolutionary history. Furthermore, the low-temperature CaC12-rich brines (type 5) of this study, which must be syn- to post-Lower Carboniferous in age, have correlatives both in Irish Caledonian granites and in the Lower Carboniferous base-metal deposits of the Irish midlands

Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

During the past 30 years, the research arena has changed significantly in all fields, mining included. The relative representation of the topics of research, how the research is performed and who has performed the research have all changed. Although there are a lot of subjective ideas and anecdotal "analyses" concerning these changes, there has been no actual study of these trends to verify the facts. This study was divided into six five-¬year periods for the purposes of comparison. Some of the trends analyzed are co-authorship, research areas, research sponsors and cooperative efforts. In today's research arena, 30 years is a long time. Technology has advanced more rapidly than in any time previously and that pace continues to increase. There are more researchers, more tools for research and an increasing number of companies, agencies and institutions engaged in research. The pace of change and its impact is often discussed and debated at professional meetings and in institutions that engage in research. These conversations will often influence the research decisions of the participants in directions to take or subjects to pursue.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

Based on field observations and physical modeling of simulated materials, the dynamic equilibrium principle on the whole interaction process between the surrounding rocks and support of large deformation roadways in coal mines has been developed. It explains the methods of forming the bolted strata and its changing load capacity with deformation. It also points out the factors and conditions for forming the bolted strata as follows: (1) many entries in coal mines are subject to large deformation. During their service life, it goes through the following process, elastic > plastic > fiacture > broken > loosening, etc. During this dynamic process, the mechanisms of supporting structure are changing and therefore the interaction between support and rocks experiences a process of dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the required supporting force for stabilizing the surrounding rocks shows overall decreasing trend; (2) the bolted strata is a special supporting structure consisting of bolt, rock skin protection devices and rock strata within the bolted horizon. As deformation increases, the supporting structure of the broken strata within the bolted horizon experiences a process of periodic change, from equilibrium > not equilibrium > equilibrium. Corresponding to this change, the supporting capacity of the bolted strata also fluctuates and gradually decreases; (3) under the bolted strata, the stability of a large deformation roadway is dynamic and step-wise; and (4) the formation of bolted strata, especially bolted broken strata depends on the existence of compressive force. Supporting the bolted strata is not constrained by the quality of the surrounding rocks. It has broad range of application.

G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

A dedicated tunnel construction version of the Caterpillar 328D LCR compact radius excavator is proving highly productive on the A9 Autoroute construction project near Visp, in Switzerland. It is the first machine of its kind to operate on a Swiss contract and uses a special dedicated front attachment designed and constructed by German Caterpillar dealer Zeppelin. The machine offers a powerful, stable and compact solution for tunneling contractors. A rear overhang of just 305 mm (12 in.) provides a tail swing radius of just 1.9 m (6.2 ft). The 328D LCR is ideal for the restricted working areas within a tunnel construction site. The machine is equipped with the wide tracks from the 330D L conventional crawler excavator, ensuring maximum stability when operating. In addition, the boom mounting has been moved further toward the center of the machine for the tunnel model, creating an increased lift capacity over the front end compared with a standard 325D L. The boom itself features a robust box section construction, with high-strength steels, additional supporting struts and reinforced bearings for maximum durability. All pins have hard-chromium plating for optimum protection against wear. Stick digging force is a powerful 134 kN, with up to 212 kN of bucket digging force available, for maximum penetration in blasted material. The 328D LCR is also equipped with a heavy-duty dozer blade as standard. This ensures outstanding stability when working and providing a useful secondary tool for clearing and leveling within the jobsite. Two 45° tilting mechanisms in the boom construction, allow the boom to be swung to 45° on either side of the machine. So the specially designed attachment linkage provides increased rollback for access to the roof of the tunnel. A Caterpillar CW45S mechanical quick-coupler allows rapid changes between specialist tunneling attachments, standard Caterpillar buckets and a range of Caterpillar work tools. The machine is powered by a Caterpillar C7 diesel engine. This six-cylinder EU Stage IIIA diesel motor [ ] offers 8 percent more power than its predecessor, with 140 kW (190 hp) available at just 1,800 rpm. Caterpillar?s ACERT combustion technology results in lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust emissions. However, the tunnel machine is also equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard, to further cut exhaust gases within the tunnel working. The 328D LCR is designed for use in transport tunnels of 6.8 m (22.3 ft) in height. With the tunneling boom in place, the machine has an operating weight of 42,540 kg (93,783 lbs), yet retains a transport height with the tunnel boom of just 3.9 m (12.8 ft). Transport width with 600 mm (23.6 in.) track shoes, is just 3.2 m (10.5 ft). On the A9 tunnel contract, the machine is being used by a consortium of Swiss and Austrian companies working for the canton of Valais? Routes Nationals Construction (RNC) department. The 31.8-km (19.7-mile) A9 Autoroute construction project will connect Sierre in the west and the town of Brig to the east. The tunnel that is bypassing the town of Visp is just one of a number along the mountainous route.

Large mining companies generally follow the distributed ownership corporate model, with a board of directors responsible for decisions that affect both shareholder value and stakeholders of the company. The board is simultaneously responsible for setting the culture and values of the corporation, which drive performance and priorities. Companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) commit to sustainable development in various ways, either by virtue of implementing the King Code of Governance 2009 (King III) and/or through their own public reporting on social and environmental matters. Many mining companies make public statements regarding their support for environmental stewardship, ethical behaviour, and fair treatment of communities. It is a local, regional, and indeed, global phenomenon that companies fail to deliver on these statements. Research was carried out through the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa in 2007, and followed up in 2012, regarding directors? understanding of sustainable development issues, the relative priorities, what is needed for ?radical change? to effect sustainable development, and what enables or constrains the latter. Pertinent findings of both surveys are presented in this paper, and it is suggested that ?on-the-ground? performance may be indicative of the nature of leadership and decisions in the topmost ranks of the company. The results indicated that environmental concerns fall consistently below social issues. Financial capital ranked most important, and while environmental issues are recognized as being of strategic concern for the long-term, they ranked as being the lowest importance of all ?Five Capitals? (Financial, Manufactured, Social, Human, and Natural). Social capital ranked second lowest, with black economic empowerment being the only high-priority social issue. There is also evidence that certain companies within the mining sector fail to recognize their absolute dependence on natural resources. Much is made in academic and popular literature of the need for a new type of leadership for the radical shift to sustainable development: at company level this implies therefore a new type of director. The research found that only 14 per cent of directors felt that board decisions are consistent with their personal values; while intentions are strong to behave ethically and serve sustainable development, actions to give effect to these intentions lag significantly. Respondents indicated that the top impediments to courageous leadership for sustainable development related to personal issues of maintaining the image of being a director, fear of appearing weak, fear of being a lone voice, and bowing to board-colleague peer pressure.
