Today computers are accepted as a standard item in industry and they perform a variety of tasks over a wide spectrum of activities from mine planning and CAD to data processing and spreadsheet work. However many problems particularly in the. area of decision making where there are no clear mathematical models available and usually the output or answer is dependent to some extent on a heuristic approach, don't lend themselves to conventional solutions using standard procedural algorithms. Recently a number of techniques have evolved primarily from the enhanced capabilities of modem equipment, which are capable of solving these problems. This paper is a brief overview of these rather unconventional developments of computer technology in the area of artificial intelligence with reference to their application in mining.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. Considerations in the mine shaft layout, design, sinking, outfitting, testing and commissioning are set forth against the background of requirements of applicable parts of Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30.

Vaporization of a solvent into an airstream at temperatures above the flash point of the solvent is hazardous if vapor is liberated at a rate that is sufficient to produce a flammable mixture. In may operations, the formation of such a mixture is prevented by rapid diluton of the vapors with air. The minimum air requirements for the dilution process are determined by the composition of the lower limit mixture at the temperature and pressure of interest. Because limits of flammability cannot always be calculated with sufficient accuracy for a proposed operation, they .rust often be determined experimentally. The present Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by an application in which the lower limits of flammability of a number of solvent mixtures were required over a range of temperatures at atmospheric pressure. These limits were to be used along with available solvent-vaporization-rate data to establish minimum airflow rates needed to prevent the formation of flammable mixtures in an industrial process. Lower limits of flammability were determined for a number of mixtures containing methyl ethyl ketone, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, ethyl alcohol, and ethyl acetate in dry air-at atmospheric pressure and temperatures between 16° and 200° C. The experimental values were found to be in good agreement at with those predicted by Le Chatelier's law; variations with temperature were in fair agreement with those predicted by a modified Burgess-Wheeler law.

Pb is an unwanted impurity in Al for which there is no established method of removal. As it interacts strongly with alkali metals, separation was achieved by adding Na or K to molten Al at 953-1 003 K. Direct Na addition led to considerable evaporative loss but in-situ addition by electrochemical titration from a eutectic NaCl-KCl or KCl-BaCl2 mixture was found far more effective, in some cases reducing Pb content below detection levels within 2 h of titration. K appeared more effective than Na at low Pb concentrations but the use of Na was preferred as it is less toxic and explosive. Na removal from Al-Na and Na-Pb alloys was also carried out electrochemically, the use of these two alloys rather than the eutectic salt as a source of Na avoiding liberation of Cl2 at the anode

Accurately estimating load distributions and ground responses around underground openings play a significant role in the safety of the operations in underground mines. Adequately designing pillars and other support measures relies highly on the accurate assessment of the loads that will be carried by them, as well as the load-bearing capacities of the supports. There are various methods that can be used to approximate mining-induced loads in stratified rock masses to be used in pillar design. The empirical methods are based on equations derived from large databases of various case studies. They are implemented in government-approved design tools and are widely used. There are also analytical and numerical techniques used for more detailed analysis of the induced loads. In this study, two different longwall mines with different panel width-to-depth ratios are analyzed using different methods. The empirical method used in the analysis is the square decay stress function that uses the abutment angle concept, implemented in pillar design software developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The first numerical method used in the analysis is a displacement-discontinuity (DD) variation of the boundaryelement method, LaModel, which utilizes the laminated overburden model (Heasley, 1998).

When the United States Geological Survey began operations at the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, it had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the systematic study of coals, lignites, and other mineral fuels with reference to their suitability for particular purposes and the methods by which they could be utilized most efficiently. Recognizing the need of information on the relative economy of producer gas as compared with steam for power purposes and the lack of comparable tests of American coals in the gas producer, the Geological Survey undertook investigations of the merits of different coals as producer fuel for the purpose of promoting efficiency in the utilization of the nation's fuel supplies. These investigations were carried on at St. Louis, Mo., and, later, at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa. The aet of Congress approved May 16, 1910, transferred the fueltesting work being carried on by the Geological Survey to the Bureau of Mines. This bureau is conducting producer-gas tests at P~ttsburg, Pa., and is publishing and distributing reports relating to all the fuel tests made by the Survey. These investigations into the possibility of generating producer gas in a commercial way for power purposes from the various fuels of the country have been associated with steaming, briquetting, coking, and other tests, all of which supplemented an examination into the nature, extent, and distribution of the fuels. The tests have all been made with carefully selected representative samples and carload lots of materials procured specially for the purpose by experienced collectors.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research to delineate factors affecting relative fabricability of electrowon and electrorefined copper. The Bureau's Rolla Metallurgy Research Center coordinated and participated in a statistical round-robin chemical analysis and performed impact tests on lead-doped copper specimens. In a series of round-robin analyses, cathode, bar, or rod from a domestic lot of electrorefined copper and electrowon copper from a domestic and a Peruvian source were analyzed for Pb, Fe, Bi, Se, Ag, O, S, Sb, and seven other elements. The electrowon cathode from both sources surpassed requirements for electrolytic cathode, although lead in the Peruvian lot exceeded specification for oxygen-free electronic grade. The least interlaboratory agreement was for oxygen analysis, Copper specimens, doped with up to ~300 ppm Pb and consisting of as-cast material (fine-grained or coarse-grained) and hot-rolled material, were impact-tested at temperatures to 871° C (1,600° F). Impact energy of fine-grained material dropped 26 pct with increased Pb up to 20 ppm and more gradually thereafter. Coarse-grained specimens fractured at lower energy with little dependence on lead. Hot rolling raised impact energy substantially. Grain structure is evidently as significant as lead in influencing workability. Some discussion is given of possible effects of oxygen, sulfur, and porosity.

Este proceso consiste en que los minerales son sensibles al ataque de soluciones ácidas y oxidantes. En ese sentido, el objetivo del texto fue determinar la respuesta de los sulfuros secundarios de cobre a la lixiviación ácida y oxidante utilizando cloruro de sodio como portador de cloruro al sistema de lixiviación. El desarrollo de las pruebas y la ejecución de las mismas, definiió el proceso de lixiviación para minerales sulfurados de Minera Pampa de Cobre.

We have had a long history in supporting the development of training material to ensure “safe” blasting. This has been provided as both significant technical guidance to the industry and input into the development of the new industry surface rockbreakers or shotfirers qualification in South Africa (RSA). The learning material supplied to the industry is based on both a classroom knowledge component and an assessment on the practical application of the learning by the trainee blaster on the job under the supervision of the appointed blaster. This training includes all blasting applications which can often extend beyond the “normal” mining environment of open pits, underground and quarries into civil applications such as trenches, blasting close to private buildings, public roads, pipelines, power lines, swimming pools and the removal of concrete structures and building demolitions etc.

Of the about 60 million pounds of aluminum used in the Pacific Northwest in 1960, 40 million pounds or two-thirds was used by 10 companies. One of these companies made airplanes and missiles; one manufactured roofing, siding, and tubing; three produced truck tractors, truck bodies, or truck trailers; two made architectural metal products; one made irrigation and industrial products; one was a general foundry; and one was a shipyard. These companies contributed to regional growth by developing markets outside the area; some have worldwide sales. Aluminum consumption increased at an average rate of 7 percent annually from 1954 to 1960. Airplane manufacture, formerly preeminent in aluminum use, no longer was in first place in 1960. By industrial group, the leading users were manufacturers of building products, 30 percent; airplanes and missiles, 22 percent; truck tractors, truck bodies, and truck trailers; 17 percent; general foundries, 5 percent; ships and boats, 4 percent; mobile homes, 4 percent; other transportation equipment, 3 percent; and irrigation equipment and all other products, 15 percent.

"The robust nature of alumina refractory materials presents opportunities for their in-process reclaiming and re-use in non-critical applications. Virgin refractories can be substituted with different quantities of reclaimed materials without compromising the quality of the refractory products. In this study, the effect of reclaimed bauxite on andalusite-containing refractory castables for tundish applications was investigated. The recycled bauxite was formulated in different proportions to replace virgin andalusite in the castables. Standard tests were conducted to evaluate the physical, physicochemical, and thermochemical properties of the formulated products. Static corrosion tests were conducted using tundish slag in order to simulate the actual operating conditions. The results show that the standard flow behaviour, open porosity, and bulk density of samples containing up to 22 mass% reclaimed bauxite were comparable to those of the reference castable. However, high-temperature properties such as static corrosion at 1400°C and hot modulus of rupture at 1500°C indicated that there is an upper constraint to the amount of substitution. The study demonstrated direct potential savings of up to 10% when the reclaimed alumina replacement ratio was increased to 22 mass%. IntroductionAlumina-based refractories can be classified into low-alumina, containing less than 50% Al2O3, and high-alumina or bauxite, containing between 50 and 90% Al2O3. High-alumina refractories have widespread applications in high-temperature metal extraction processes due to their outstanding thermochemical and thermomechanical properties and stability (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Frulli, 2016). The typical chemical composition of refractory-grade bauxite consists of 85–90 wt.% Al2O3, 5–10 wt.% SiO2, 1–2wt.% Fe2O3, 3–4 wt.% TiO2, 0.4–0.8 wt.% CaO + MgO, and 0.20–0.8 wt.% K2O + Na2O (Nyoka et al., 2013). The thermochemical and thermomechanical properties of bauxite-based refractories rely principally on the conversion of the contained silica and alumina to the highly stable corundum (?-Al2O3) and mullite (3Al2O3· 2SiO2) phases (Rebouillat and Rigaud, 2002; Hill and Sehnke, 2006; Garbers-Craig, 2008; Frulli, 2016)."

Tool performance and the unit cost of cutting depend on a number of operational variables (peripheral velocity, pull-back force, water injection rate, angles of the sections of wire outside the rock) as well as on the geometric features of the cut itself (area and shape). Cutting rate and wire productivity are also influenced by the type and number of diamond beads per unit length of wire and by the characteristics of the rock (granite or marble). A computer program aimed at handling a problem of this complexity has been developed and tested with the use of available field and laboratory data and has been found acceptably reliable. Discrepancies between current industrial data and some of the results suggest future lines of research, while the simulation should also be extended to include different types of rock and tool and a variety of bench face geometries

Our aging infrastructure includes numerous tunnels that provide easy access through topographic and societal obstacles. These tunnels are renewable resources that require periodic maintenance and rehabilitation to extend their useful lifespan to hundreds or even thousands of years. However, as with any structural rehabilitation project, tunnel liner rehabilitation requires an inordinate amount of evaluation and care due often poorly documented original construction and subsequent repair construction methods and materials. This paper documents the investigation, planning, design, and construction efforts of the rehabilitation of a 74-year old, 216-meter (713 foot) long two-lane highway tunnel in moderately fractured to highly sheared basalt on the Oregon coast. The tunnel consists of four sections lined originally with timber and subsequently overlaid with concrete, and three unlined sections.

Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. Blasting for armour stone presents many unique challenges. Often, blasters get themselves into trouble when they assume that they can simply modify a production blast design to produce the required fragmentation size. They bid on the project using typical production blasting costs, and then find that they cannot produce the required fragmentation size and quantity with an acceptable waste factor. This paper outlines industry best practice guidelines for the production of riprap or armour stone. The paper examines the importance of initial geological mapping to determine the average in-situ block size, and the advantages to be gained from working with the geology to maximize production of the required block sizes. The paper also outlines the importance of proper explosives selection as well as blast designs that are unique to the production of riprap. The paper reviews challenges and experiences realized from multiple projects in differing rock types.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.
